Newly refurbished science facilities support student learning<br />

I have already mentioned the spirit of our hard-working and<br />

committed staff team. We are also very happy to welcome to our<br />

community the newest members of our team in <strong>2020</strong>:<br />

• Finian Augustin who joins us as a teacher of Indonesian/<br />

Maths<br />

• Belinda Dwyer commencing in the role of Applied Learning<br />

(VCAL) Coordinator<br />

• Matthew Edwards as Teacher of English and Assistant House<br />

Leader of Rice House<br />

• Sharon Hayes as Education Resources (Library) Leader<br />

• Michelle Tapera commencing in the new Careers Officer role<br />

• Kristiana Withers (a member of the instrumental music team)<br />

joins us as a teacher of Music<br />

• Carley Young joins us as a teacher of Mathematics and<br />

Science for the duration of Peter Sartori’s leave over first<br />

semester<br />

• Nicole Saleta joins our Science technical support team<br />

• Mary Vanderlinden joins as the Food Technology Assistant<br />

• Naomi Price commences as specialist support within the<br />

Diverse Learning team.<br />

Since the start of last year, we have welcomed a number of staff into<br />

our ranks:<br />

• Paul Blanchfield as Rowing Logistics and Technical Support<br />

• Angela Carr as Assistant Library Technician<br />

• Andrew Curran in Maintenance<br />

• Hamish Walsh, Teacher of Mathematics and PE and Rowing<br />

Administration and Support Teacher<br />

• Emily Gray as a Learning Support Officer<br />

• Lisa Meade as the Food Technology Assistant<br />

• Shaun O’Loughlin as Teacher within PE, the HoLP and VCAL.<br />

It is wonderful to have these great new additions to our staff team<br />

and we look forward to their contributions over the coming months<br />

and years.<br />

In this edition you will read of the retirements of Loretta Kaval (25<br />

years of service), Noelene Ward (16 years of service), and Nancy<br />

Meiklejohn (25 years of service). We also formally farewelled<br />

Karen Simpkin and Jane McKendrick at the conclusion of 2019.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se women are truly women of Mercy in the spirit of Catherine<br />

McAuley and their respective vocations at Damascus College have<br />

been pivotal to the success of our community today. I thank and<br />

acknowledge their contribution to our educational community.<br />

Our new Music facility is supporting the great work of the<br />

Performing Arts team and the refurbished Science facilities support<br />

contemporary project-based learning for our ESTEEM program.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se are beautiful learning spaces. We have commenced our<br />

building works on the Gathering Space and Examination Centre.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se works are designed by Laws Architects, undertaken by<br />

Magellan Builders, and funded by the Damascus community. <strong>The</strong><br />

project is scheduled for completion for the start of Term 4 and will be<br />

a great asset to the College community.<br />
