Using the curved elements of table tennis and the different height circles, the construction of Factory O contained

the image that table tennis pursues and the human perspective of sports. Table tennis is a fast three-dimensional

sport and is based on the chance and chance of the curve, not a straight line. Such non-generative element is

interesting and exiting because it is condensed. The three-dimensional curves of Factory O are also incredibly

interesting to watch.

Wood Garden, which actually has a water garden tree in its floor plan, means two rackets, while Chung Won-hyeong's Sky

Garden symbolized the ball in the middle. The architect thought it was the meaning of table tennis sports to make relationships

between people through games in which two rackets are played with the ball centered around. Sky Garden is easily seen from

anywhere in the building and uses a transparent glass wall to bring in a lot of natural light inside the building. Life is not shut

down, especially sports, which are special genres that give people light in transparent relationships and frustration.

In a large area of building attention, elements that are necessary and familiar to people, such as air, soil, water,

trees, and stones, were placed naturally. The combination of environmental factors that has become genetically

familiar to humans over tens of thousands of years is very moving. Why do we play sports? It is an industrialization

phenomenon that has left the nature of humans in harmony with nature that all modern sports are heading toward

intense competition and commercialization.

We do not believe that victory and compensation are for sports purposes. Sports have the purpose of building

relationships with others through physical and mental processes and maintaining human values as part of nature and

Environmentally-friendly and human philosophy is also highly relevant to the functionality of the Factory O.

Factory O is designed to develop and produce high-end table tennis products. But all of the machines and equipment

have been developed to take into account high efficiency and low noise, reduction and recycling of waste, carbon

emission limitations, and low energy consumption. Mechanization and automation are no longer in conflict with the

environment. With maximum energy efficiency based on new materials and modes of operation, artificial intelligent

production systems using sensors, and Value Chain's design, which reduces waste, efficiency, eco - friendly, and

mountain life can be achieved.

Factory O is the direction of the future table tennis industry and sports production facilities. By designing not only the

eco - friendly but also the pro-human concept, we wanted to see ourselves not only as producers but also as guardians

of the environment and humanity. Factory O has placed large equipment underground to improve the entire working

The real problem is that the company's vision for such healthy industrialization is lacking. Now, the table tennis

Rubber is a key functional factor to complete table tennis as sport by making rectilinear movement to curvilinear. Its frictional

force makes maximum 7800spin/m on a 2.7g ball and it draws beautiful and powerful curves by using air resistance. An

explosive speed is attraction of table tennis and it only exists by an existence of a curvilinear motion. Without that, passing

a ball over a quite high net and hitting only 2 Sqm of the other side of court are difficult. In other word, playing to complete

satisfaction is impossible with an absence of it.

Basically table tennis rubber is synthesized from natural and artificial rubber, and it has a form of inner bridge structure with

More likely than others, changes in rules causes new requirements and it lead to new technologies in the table tennis.

Applying a speed glue several times was the most common in the late 20th century. After its forbidden, the 3rd generation

TENSOR and the Hi-Tension tech were developed in order to secure a ball speed. For now, new rubber production

technologies replaced most of roles of a speed glue. Therefore, paradoxically, an argument that a speed glue kept the rubber

from its technical developments is not an over-interpretation. In 2014, celluloid table tennis balls manufactured from a polluter

industry were forbidden, and new material balls were chosen as official game balls. A dominant material for new game balls

is ABS plastic. It is better than the celluloid on many aspects such as eco-friendliness, deficiency rate, lifespan, and spherical

shape. However, since it has a smooth surface unlike the celluloid, it is hard to have enough frictional force. This weakness is

deadly for defending type players and requires new technology. Again, new requirement has to lead new technology.

The rubber-chemical development method and sports physics have a limit. Like a maze, repetition

We had numerous failures on the plywood production. Even though we expected the

contingency, the excessive deviation was hard to overcome. The plywood is closer to

the engineering product than the scientific, and it considers the on-site craftsmanship

as the most priority. Also it has the structural difficulty on mechanical production and

securing consistent materials. In addition, there are many uncertainties, for example,

humidity and temperature of production environment, and proficiency level of

craftsman. However, ironically, those imperfections are covered by imperfect human,

not perfect machine. The reasons for the high quality of the Japanese boards is the

superb obsession over job-completeness that follows the craftsmanship trained for

generations. While a fine quality for the rubber is obtainable by machine, the plywood

still needs the human touch. Also it is the very strange fact in the view of highly

developed industrialization. The FEEL blade is the straightforward product. It was

manufactured in the modest attitude by honest embracing of the past experiences.

The ZX series used zephylium carbon that empirically works the best for improving and

supplementing the nature of wood. Also for its core product, the Kiso Hinoki was used,

which is unmatched by any others and known as the king of wood for its material. The

ZX made various portfolios with the consideration of the individual diversity in the

HISTORY OF CRAFTMANSHIP

Tree is an old and familiar organic matter as much as the human

history. Each tree has an own physical character, such as resist

strength, tension strength, or density, and the different character

makes a sensory component of a plywood which is practically

perceptible, for example hardness, stiffness, or weight. The

production of the plywood is focused on revealing intrinsic

character of wood, by plying physical characters of different

trees. Also it supplies rectilinear kinetic-energy to the rubber.

While the rubber modifies it into the curvilinear, the source of

energy is came from the plywood. The wood is an easily sensible

material having proper vibration to deliver sense to the human

body. Also there were many tries to replace it into carbon or

polymer so far. However, a possibility of those is a question,

because the several million years of familiarity with the sense

of wood has doubt on it. Can an artificial synthesized polymer

material be enough to ignore the history which was began after

the 20th century? We also use carbon and synthetic polymer,

but restrictively. While we supplement the performance of the

wood, we put our effort on maintaining its nature sense.

The table tennis is so delicate beyond common understanding

that we use highly sensitive products. The plywood is crafted

by adjusting a thickness according to an energy efficiency by

collecting the several veneers from more than 35 different kinds,

which are fit to the production purpose. The Vibration of the

plywood has about 5-7 frequency ranges, and the sense of the

board is a sum of those frequencies. The plywood production is

much complicated when looking it in detail. Only the 0.2mm of

change in thickness and the 1mm in appearance of the veneer

have the considerable impact on the sense. Also even the same

species of tree have a high deviation of the performance and the

sense according to location, year and drying method. Also every

shape of vibrational frequency varies a little, when investigating

the boards manufactured from the mechanized mass production

system. Consequently, a sameness doesn’t exist. The plywood

production is premised on coincidence and diversity, and it is

lined with the character of the developed table tennis on basis of

individualization.

Japan has the class above in the plywood production. They

provide a polished work through their genetic craftsmanship. The

XIOM is a world class brand in the rubber, although having a lot

of thing to learn in the plywood. Therefore, we humbly reviewed

our plywood production requirements, and built the production

base in Japan. A winning might be a reason. However, growing

the table tennis more beautiful, through improving the mutual

completeness, is definitely the ultimate reason.

The European traditional, Swedish plywood is excellent in

material and dry. However, it is true that there is the lack of

overall perfection and quality management. Also having the

technical limit on utilizing the new materials demanded by the

new times. China is big country for the table tennis and has a

fine completeness of the plywood, whereas its heaviness and

high regionality caused it falling behind Sweden in the plywood

technology. Thus, the sensuous management ability on the board

quality is necessary to become a world class. Again, the board is

highly delicate product, so the level of precise wood processing

industry of the countries determines the quality. While European

and Chinese producers manufacture outstanding products,

Japanese has the best in absolute evaluation.

We manufactured our very own zephylium carbon(ZX) by weaving the thinnest 1K

carbon with the Zylon from the Toyobo company of Japan. Although it is the hard

edit-production process, we judged it is surely superior on enhancing the quality

above than any synthetic polymers whatever. The ZX delivers higher energy to a ball

in a moment by increasing the katapult effect of the plywood. The ZX will provide the

significant experience with other new synthetic materials, in the feeling at the hitting

moment and the bounding orbit at the cross side.

Likewise the rubber, new requirement lead new technology. The new ABS polymer ball

balances better with the plywood with higher katapult effect. The sufficient mechanism,

250 YEARS OF WAIT

The Kiso region, closed to Nagano of central Japan, is the distribution center of the Hinoki

tree species. The heavy Hinoki grows at the foot of mountain facing North, and the light

and low density grows at the facing South. Also the latter is the one for the table tennis.

On account of its rarity and uniqueness, logging is extremely restricted since Edo period.

The Hinoki is superb at strength and processability that even the temple constructed with

it 1000 years ago, still stays in good condition.

The Hinoki must have enough thickness, that excludes the low density part of the core,

in order to use for the table tennis. Since trees grow slowly in the low temperature

damp environment like the Kiso region. The Hinoki around 70 years old has just 30cm of

diameter, and those are only usable as building material. The age over 250 years is for

table tennis. It used to be used as the end-plate for the Japanese style penholder, but now

it is the essential plywood material for the shake. Although its logging rate dropped to 1/20

and price jumped dramatically, we are honored just because of being able to use Hinoki

which is having the matchless vibration-frequency to our table tennis equipment.

A basic quality of a restitution strength and a spin reflection rate is depending on the

surface treatment of top board. The treatment has two methods. The point method covers

the roll painting, flow coating, and UV coating. Also the raisin method includes laminating

that has strength at humidity and long lifespan. Method called as laminating is Overlay that

presses a surface with pressure after manufacturing the micro structure with mould. At this

procedure, the protrusion structure of the micro structure is highly related with the spin

reflection rate. The paint particle takes the role in painting method, but it has less certainty

of performance and shorter lifespan of protrusion than the laminating. However, painting

white line on the top board is the bigger problem for both methods. The paint has 0.1-0.2mm

of thickness and softness, so it disturbs providing fair bound. Receiving a ball which is

bounded from the line is uncomfortable, because of low spin reflection rate. However, top

board must have complete consistency. Although it might sound too picky, standardized

bound is all about the table and it is the fairest compensation for players’ effort. Can

imagine rocks in a soccer field? we can’t say it is the fair goal that comes from the rocks.

The table tennis ball weights only 2.7g, and it is very light relative to its volume of

40mm diameter. Exercising an intense ball game is difficult in a small indoor space,

After celluloid was forbidden, new plastic balls were introduced, but consumers had to

be suffered for the defective. Again, the mass production of the light weighted sphere

shape ball in same quality is almost impossible. To deal with the difficulty, two main

methods are getting attention. First one is about improvement of material by using

ABS polymer. The another is the injection moulding that making seamless sphere.

The production method, which is originated from the celluloid generation, integrates

two hemispheres and processing the seam, the touching line of the two. However,

the thinned area around the seam causes an increase of the faulty and a decrease

of a lifespan. The new seamless ball is produced by injecting the liquefied raisin

polymer into the accurately processed sphere-shaped mould, and rotating the mould

in multiple axes of XYZ. Ironically, the product requiring the highest standardization

has the lowest guarantee of the quality. The table tennis industry is not honest on this

structural weakness. Perhaps, that weak point needs an understanding with an effort

to remove the mask that it insists on wearing.

THE HISTORY OF GLUE

TELLS THE STORY OF TABLE TENNIS

The glue for attaching the rubber and

board was used for different purpose

until 2008. The speed glue that contains

solvent, sharply increases the elasticity

for limited time by filling gas inside

of the rubber. The decision made by

ITTF in 2008, that prohibiting the

use of harmful VOC to the sport and

performance improvement of the sport

equipment through physical and chemical

manipulation, is based on the charter of

the agenda 21, advocated by Olympic

Sports and Environment Commission

in the 1990s. It says the sport should

consider the environment and health

of people, and the sustainability, which

means the sport should include the value

of the human environment and ethics

over mere competition and function. The

viewpoint whether seeing the sport as

the function or value is the extremely

important intersection of the sport history

development. Also, as a member of the

sport community, we agree and actively

participate in the spirit of the agenda 21

that started those value structure.

After the prohibition of the speed glue

in 2008, the booster that enhancing

the elasticity was used among the top

players. Although it can pass on the

E-Nez, the VOC tester, for it is nongluing-purposed,

it is undeniable illegality

that violates the ITTF regulation 2.4.7

Racket Covering shall be used without

any physical, chemical or other treatment.

The strict restriction on the booster that

increasing the elasticity for limited time

through expanding the inner structure of

the rubber, should be strongly regulated

by considering the ethics of the table

tennis and future sustainability.

The glue from the XIOM® is harmless on

human body because it is water based,

and only produced for attaching the

rubber on the wooden board. The most

of the rubbers from the XIOM® do not

need the booster, as they already have

the enough elasticity for the game by the

TENSOR technology.
