The Bloodwise Charity Match

For The Jayne Bullock & Dave Howe

Memorial Trophy - Sunday 5th May 2019

On a pleasant afternoon in early May after a match between a Supporters

XI and a First Team XI the total amount of £546 was raised for the

Bloodwise charity on the day.

I would like to give my personal thanks to the following people who without

whose help the game would not have been possible :-

Lyn Catchpole MBE, her Mum Veronica and partner Vic, and to Steve

Atkins and Jackie Watkins for all their continued support since 1990 and

for the use of the pitch. To our Management Team Ashley, Cornelius and

Jordan all the Players, Charlie the Kit Man and the Club Stewards who did

a fantastic job on the day and our Supporters who paid for the privilege

of playing in the match. Also to my Wife Wendy, Son Andrew, Daughter-in

-law Margaret and Granddaughter Erin. To Pat, Karen and Elsie in the tea

bar, the Match Officials, Trish Garrard for providing the lovely cakes, Chris

Jackson for producing the Match Programme and the Bar Staff and all

the people in attendance who generated a good atmosphere. A special

thanks to Predator Pest Solutions, our new sponsor, and if there is anyone I

have forgotten to mention then I sincerely apologise.

T&MU FC Programme is collated & printed

by Mailboxes Etc., Croydon.

Looking back

to Season 1939-40

Due to the outbreak of the Second World War which

started in September 1939 this was to be a very down

beat season.

It started on 19th August with the annual ‘Possibles’

versus ‘Probables’ trial match. Seven days later the

Athenian League programme started with a trip to

Finchley and Tooting ran out 3-1 winners, Dave Walker

with two of the goals. However, this would be Tooting’s

only Athenian League fixture as the league programme

was abandoned due to the War.

Tooting & Mitcham continued to play friendlies until

November when a War-time competition was started

called the South Eastern Combination League which

consisted of 8 clubs. The opening game against

Redhill was won 5-3 and the following Saturday Sutton

United were seen off by 5-1, both games being at

Sandy Lane, Dave Walker with four of the goals. The

next three matches were all away from home. Dulwich

Hamlet were beaten 2-0, Roy Mathews with

both goals. A Dave Walker hat-trick helped see off

Wimbledon at Plough Lane by 5-3 and the points

were shared at Redhill.

Moving into December there was a nine-goal thriller

at home to Bromley which Tooting edged 5-4. On

Christmas Day Tooting beat Dartford in a home friendly

by 6-1 and on Boxing Day Shorts Sports were hammered

8-0 in another friendly at Sandy Lane, Roy

Mathews getting nine goals in the two matches. In

the New Year Tooting went on to win the SECL losing

only one game in the process, that being the last

match away to Erith & Belvedere.

The London Senior Cup saw United go out at the first

hurdle away to Fords Sports 3-1. In the Surrey Senior

Cup United reached the Final beating along the way

Metropolitan Police (a) by 4-0, Guildford City (h) by 3-

1 and Nunhead (n) by 3-1 in the semi-final, Johnny

Osborne scoring twice, Anderson with the other. The

win saw Tooting in the Final against near neighbours

Wimbledon. On the day of the match it was questionable

if Tooting & Mitcham United could field a team

with no less than five places to be filled because of

South Eastern Combination League

Final Table 1939-40

IAN BULLOCK

missing players due to the War effort. However, Tooting

did manage to get eleven players out on the

pitch, but a lack of training for the unexpected called

upon men played a notable part in their defeat. The

Final saw Tooting leading 1-0 at the hour mark but

eventually going down by 3-1 as the players tired,

Norris getting the consolation goal.

On a personal note with regards to the Second World

War, I would like to pay a small tribute to my late

father Geoff Bullock, who was a Tooting & Mitcham

United supporter for over 70 years until his death in

2010. He was only in his early twenties when he was

sent to Burma to fight the Japanese. He was a member

of the ‘Chindits’ who were formed to carry out

raiding operations against the Imperial Japanese

Army. They were a specialist unit who’s operations

were marked by prolonged marches through extremely

difficult terrain, by underfed troops often

weakened by diseases such s malaria and dysentery.

I am proud to say that he ultimately received a bravery

medal for his services to duty.

WELCOME TO

THE CAMPUS SOCIETY STADIUM

Home of Tooting & Mitcham Utd FC - ‘The Terrors’

Good evening and welcome this Isthmian

League South Central Division match against

Ashford Town (Middx) FC.

We bid a warm welcome to all their team members,

officials and fans to the Campus Society Stadium and

trust they will enjoy their stay with us today and have a

safe journey home again after the match.

Here we are at the start of a new season with a largely

all new team but the same superb Management team

of Ashley & Cornelius. The push for the play-offs just

eluded the side last season but we are promised an all

out assault on promotion for this season. We of course

welcome all our new players to the ‘Terror’ family and

hope they’ll look forward to the great support form the

‘Bog End’ faithful.

You can’t failed to have noticed that we have had to

increase the price of our matchday programme to

£2.50 after more years than I care to remember at the

old price. Unfortunately we have had to do this in order

to keep up the high standards that we strive to achieve

for our programme and to allay ever increasing production

costs. Unfortunately paper and ink don’t come

cheap anymore and we are absolutely certain that you

would all rather have a properly printed programme

THE EDITOR

than any of these ‘on-line’ versions that more and more

clubs are resorting too.

Now for some very sad news. The club has lost one of

it’s most loyal servants when Vice President and former

Club Treasurer Dave McCann passed away recently.

Dave has been a T&MU FC man for more years than

you can imagine. I’ve only known Dave for 10 years or

so but I always found him to be a most likeable chap

and a mine of information about the club, even if his

handwriting left a lot to be desired.

Sadly we also lost another long time supporter of the

Terrors recently when Martyn Harris passed away in

May.

Appreciations of both Dave and Martyn’s time with us

are included in this programme. A minute’s silence in

their honour will be observed before the kick-off this

evening.

Dave’s funeral will be held on Friday 6th September at

10.15am at Beckenham crematorium, Elmers End.

Please contact info@tmumembers.co.uk if you wish to

attend as we have been asked to give the family an

idea of numbers that will be present.

Enjoy the game - DP

August Through the Ages

(Part 1)

AUGUST 1951

There was not much to write home about in the

month or indeed in the season. The three Athenian

League games produced just one point, that

was a high scoring 4-4 draw against Redhill at

Sandy Lane, Tooting’s goals coming from Allbutt,

Case, Kerner and Webb. The other games saw a

3-0 loss at Hayes and at home to Finchley 2-3.

AUGUST 1961

The season started with a bang as Barking were

thrashed by 8-1 at Sandy Lane, new signing Paul

Bates weighing in with five goals. Next was a trip

to Essex to face a very strong Leytonstone outfit

that ended the campaign in second place. The

Terrors had an excellent 3-2 success with efforts

from Bates, Tony Knox and Kilby Edwards. This

was followed by a hard-earned point at

Wycombe Wanderers on their sloping pitch. August

ended with a quick return fixture against

Leytonstone and it ended honours even following

a 1-1 draw.

AUGUST 1971

With much of Tooting’s team and Coach Doug

Flack leaving in pre-season it was always going

to be a testing time for incoming Manager Graham

Deacon, and so it proved. A series of poor

results would saw him leave in November to be

replaced by Roy Dwight. August could not have

started with a harder fixture with a trip to play

the powerful Enfield side. The Terrors put in a

spirited display but were unlucky to go down 4-3,

Steve Mann, Steve Hamer and Tommy Smith the

goal-scorers. The following Tuesday Tooting entertained

Woking and achieved one of the rare

Isthmian League victories of the season after a 2-

0 success, Mark Rousseau with both goals. Clapton

at home followed and a disappointing 2-2

draw, Lee Burnham one of the few new players

to shine with one of the goals. The remaining

three games in the month all ended in defeat

Kingstonian (a), Bishop’s Stortford (a) and Walton

& Hersham (h).

AUGUST 1981

There were six matches in the month with Jack

Payne at the helm. The two opening games

were both at home and full points were taken in

each, namely Hitchin Town 3-2, Herbie Smith with

a couple and against Leatherhead by 2-0, Micky

Sorensen and Fran Cowley doing the business.

IAN BULLOCK

The first away excursion was at Slough Town and

Tooting received a good spanking by 5-2. The

Terrors returned to winning ways with a local

derby victory at Carshalton Athletic by a 2-0

margin, the two Dave’s, Juneman and Busby on

target. There was a 0-3 home reverse to jinx side

Staines Town, but the month ended with League

Cup success at Boreham Wood by 1-0.

AUGUST 1991

The club were now to be found in the Isthmian

League Division One and former player Trevor

Ford was in charge of First Team affairs. It was a

reasonable month. A Bobby Dennington special

was good enough to see off Leyton-Wingate at

Sandy Lane and the following Tuesday was a

home match against old rivals and tenants for

the season, Dulwich Hamlet. An entertaining

encounter ended all square at 2-2, Tooting’s

scorers towering central defender Ralph Cowan

and Robin Welch. The Terrors side was Peter Mills,

Danny Wood, David Gabriel, Dave Taylor, Ralph

Cowan, Paul Loughlin, Micky Stephens, Noel

Costelloe, Robin Welch, John Collins, Bobby Dennington.

Unused subs were Errol Vassell & Peter

Kingston. Ex Terror Ronnie Murrock got one of the

visitor’s strikes. It was then defeat at Whyteleafe

and a bore 0-0 draw at home to Molesey. The

last day of the month saw United’s FA Cup trail

begin as Redhill were swept aside in a preliminary

round tie by 2-0 at the Lane.

AUGUST 2001

The Terrors were still in Division One, Ian Hazel

was First Team Manager assisted by Mark Hams.

The opener was at home to Windsor & Eton who

ended the season bottom of the table and Tooting

just edged it by 2-1. The team was Tony

Webb, Darrell Teasdale, Steve Symes, Alex O’Brien,

Steve Lawson, Luke Ferguson, Micky Rootes,

Noel Frankum (Mark McGibbon), Nigel Webb,

Matt Gray (Conrad Kane) & Durrand Jemmott.

Unused sub was Neil Hams. By contrast the next

league match was away to Ford United who

ended up League Champions and Tooting put

in a good performance to snatch a 1-1 draw,

Micky Rootes on target. The other two fixtures,

both against teams who would finish high up in

the table, saw a win and a defeat. The trip to

Northwood saw Tooting win a seven goal thriller

4-3, on loan striker Matt Gray getting a hat-trick.

The home game with Aylesbury United was another

high scoring affair but the Terrors went

down by 2-4, Neil Hams and Paul Cook with the

consolation goals.

hopefully help put bums on seats.

Off the pitch we have lost long time supporters with

Dave McCann and Martin Harvey and our deepest

sympathies go out to their families. Very Sad indeed.

There are a lot of changes going on at Tooting and

Mitcham and the club has changed for the better, with

more people helping out and getting involved behind

the scenes. There is a really good vibe about the place

now. Fingers crossed Dear Reader.... Up The Stripes !!!

Here’s a BIG T&MU FC welcome to

Caroline McRoyall, the new Chair of

Tooting & Mitcham Utd FC.

Steve Adkins has announced that he has stepped

down as Chair of Tooting & Mitcham United and to be

replaced by Caroline McRoyall, formerly CEO of the

Surrey FA.

After many years as Chair Steve intends to concentrate

on the strategic plans for Imperial Fields, which will ensure

the long-term security of T&MUFC and TM United as

a whole. The organisation is the centre of the local

community, creating opportunities for everyone in sport,

health, education and leisure. Steve remains as the

major shareholder of Tooting and Mitcham Sports and

Leisure Ltd who own the Club.

In a statement Steve said:

“My time as Chair of the Club has been a roller-coaster,

with the highs of promotion and lows of relegation ! My

proudest moments have to include creating opportunities

for the young people of South London. During my

chairmanship young players have gone on to professional

football clubs and many others have been given

opportunities to find their place in the community. The

last couple of seasons have been my proudest and the

potential of the Club has never been greater.

To be able to pass on the stewardship to Caroline is

fantastic. She has been involved with football throughout

her career. Her knowledge and experience will

create even more opportunities for the Club and its

community.”

Caroline added:

“I am honoured to be joining Tooting and Mitcham FC

as Chair and relish the opportunity to support the club in

its pivotal role of developing players and providing a

wide range of activities for the local community.”

CAROLINE M C ROYALL

Tooting & Mitcham’s development of the back 3G

artificial pitch and resurface of the front artificial pitch.

In Dec 2013 Ray Ward left Surrey FA and I was made

Interim CEO before getting the position on a permanent

basis in May 2014. During this time, I managed the day

to day operations of the organisation as well as ensuring

the business achieved its strategic goals. I project

managed the relocation of the organisation to the new

purpose-built office and 3G artificial football pitch at

Meadowbank Football Ground, securing a long-term

lease from Mole Valley District Council. As well as steering

the organisation to become a registered charity

and be the first County FA to achieve the Intermediate

Level of the Equality Standard for Sport.

Q. What was your impression of Tooting & Mitcham

United FC, before you joined the club?

Caroline’s Q&A’s

The Chair role is voluntary, but I will be undertaking

the County FA’s Facility Strategy, advising Local Authorities,

I used to live in Mitcham and went (continued …..)

with them to progress projects, one of these included

to Gorringe Park School so walked past the Sandy Lane

ground daily and attended a few matches with mum

and brother.

Q. Having attended the Charlton and Reading game,

what are your first impressions of the club?

I was struck immediately by how welcoming everyone

was and just how many volunteers are involved in

match days. It was great to talk to many members and

hear about there association with the club many of

whom have been involved since their childhood. In

terms of the actual team performance I felt we did well

although lacked any clinical finishing (although the

strength of the wind didn’t help against Reading). The

team looked organised and able to pass the ball well

and considering the number of changes for both

games everyone seemed to have a good understanding

of the system and the way the managers wanted

the team to play, showing good strength in depth.

Q. What do you see as your main strengths & what

attributes are you hoping to bring to this new role?

My main strengths are my knowledge of strategy, football

development, funding, governance, and inclusion.

I also have a few contacts within the game that may

be useful. I am an organised and driven person with

strong management skills.

Q. What do you see as the key functions of your role?

I see my key functions to ultimately be an ambassador

of the club and to try and raise the profile of the club,

through various means such as fan engagement, social

media and marketing. I will work closely with the members

club to ensure the smooth running of match days,

sponsorship and membership and with the Chair of the

youth section to ensure there is a pathway for players.

I also hope to support the growth and development of

the club and increase opportunities for women & girls.

Q. What will be your immediate priorities?

To fully understand the structures and the personnel

(both staff and volunteers) currently in place

Q. Can we expect to see you on match days support-

ing the club?

I hope to attend quite a few home games.

Q. What is your thoughts on our promotion chances this

year?

It’s probably too early to for me to tell but I would hope

we can get into the playoff places.

Q. Will your role overlap with Steve Adkins or are there

clear demarcation lines agreed?

Q. If you could change one thing about football or the

club what would it be?

game which seemed to be heading to be a 0-0 draw

until two late goals for The Terrors gave us victory. Tooting

Bec also played Sheerwater on the same day allowing

me and Bog End Ant to fit in two games in a day.

Also on the same day Dulwich Hamlet played Tottenham

over in the Sainsburys Car Park. People call Football

the "Beautiful Game" but every now and again

football’s ugly side shows it's face... and it doesn't get

much uglier than that.

Next to visit us and play on the rear pitch were Greenwich

Borough who gave us a good work out and we

got a 2-1 victory. They seem to be having a bad time

off the pitch since the last time we played each other

during our Championship season which is a shame.

Which as anyone can tell you with Football is that is

doesn't take much for things to go tits up.

Hastings then arrived at Fortress Imperial for another PSF.

I'm told they expected the game to be played on the

main pitch and weren't to happy about being taken up

the rear to play on the 3G pitch ! Hastings well beaten 3

-1 I'm told by Bogend Ant who shows not in the slightest

bit of bias when discussing Terrors games.

I missed most of the game due to trying my hardest to

sort out the millions of programmes we are going to be

selling from the new super doper club shop on match

days during the forthcoming season.

Next up was a trip over to Gander Green Lane to see

Sutton v Barnet play out a 1-1 draw. I used to go and

watch Barnet when living "Up Norf" so have a bit of a

soft spot for those Bee types. Also allowed me to spend

some quality time with "Dirty Barry" and Sutton guitar

hero @bornatotter for a night of serious debate. Next

game for myself and Ant was the friendly against a

strong Charlton Athletic under 23 team who were to

beat us 2-0 it what was to be an entertaining close

game which despite the result still gives us Terrors a lot

to look forward to. Point of interest was that Ex Terror

Abraham Odoh scored the Robins second goal from

the penalty spot. The last two games involved another

trip to GGL to watch Sutton Common Rovers play Moist

Molesey in the early stages of this seasons FA Cup. An

interesting 1-1 draw made for a good Friday night entertainment.

I do enjoy Friday night games and wish that

Toots got the chance to play a few. Last up on my Pre

Season was Ramsgate at Fortress Imperial for a pretty

ordinary 1-1 draw with our visitors from Kent going 1-0

up before a late equaliser from Shamal Edwards.

Really looking forward now to the start of the season

and to see how we have improved from last year. We

were pretty much undone by the bad start which cost

us any chance of making the play offs. I still maintain

that we were our own worst enemies last season and

that a good number of dropped points were due to our

own mistakes rather than the opposition teams good

play. We've lost a number of the squad from last season

but with four of them joining League teams it proves

that the plan the club has got going at Tooting and

Mitcham is paying dividends. Lexus Beeden finally joining

Reading and Saidou Khan joining Maidstone. The

club is getting an excellent reputation for it's youth set

up. This of course could be a double edged sword

which means any good players will move on but it also

gets the club known for having good players which will

Pre Season Pre Nerves

Well here we are Dear Reader, Hope you had a lovely

break away from my tales of doom, gloom, happiness

and joy. So it's the start of the new 2019-20 season and

we get ready for the start of the Victor Meldrew South

Central Division.

We'd all been waiting a while for the return to Fortress

Imperial and the start of the Pre Season friendlies and

the team has looked really good in the first few games.

Much as I love Mrs H, and I'm sure she loves me, spending

too much time in each others company while going

around the Asda Beddington Lane on a Saturday has

meant she has looked forward to the start of the season

more than I have plus she gets to be free of Bog End

Ant for a few hours. So it was to be a pretty busy Pre

Season programme for me and Ant...

A number of players from last seasons squad had left as

Frank Wilson took the reins over at Mertsham and took a

number of our players with him after Hayden Bird had

joined Kingstonian. I wish him and the departing players

all the best over there. I hope the footballing Gods treat

him better than they did in his last year at Toots. In truth

losing a number of senior players caused a lot of worry

on the various social media sites but the club have

brought in some new faces and a returning hero Dean

Hamlin to bolster the ranks. A number of youth players

from last seasons Under 23 Champions have also been

brought into the first team squad. Things are looking

HACKBRIDGE HARRY

good and there was a full programme of pre season

fixtures booked to help get the Terrors up and running

for the new season.

To start with a two nil victory over Moist Molesey and

then another two nil win over our next door neighbours

Tooting Bec set things off nicely for our short trip over to

Carshalton on July 13th, Toots turning out an impressive

three nil win against the Robins who had a fantastic last

season and have start pulling in some impressive

crowds. They played a mixture from their squad which

I'm told contained only a few first team players but

even so the second half was great to watch from a

Terrors or Neutral perspective. Goals from Filipe, Hibbert

and Danny Bassett who may or may not have swapped

the delights of playing in Canvey Island and returned to

up market Mitcham to play his football. Next up a home

game on the fantastic looking home pitch against

Reading who played a mixture of youth team players

and trialists. Toots winning the game 3-2 with another

excellent performance against the Championship Club.

The Terrors switched of a bit at the end allowing the

visitors to score two late goals.

Saturday 20th July we had a visit from our old friends

from down the A3, Corinthian Casuals, a friendly club

that prove that not all teams that play in pink are

b*st*rds. A 12:30 kick off was a shame as the Casuals

would probably have brought a larger away following

to the game with a later kick-off. It was a hard fought

Ashford Town (Middx) FC

Club History

For many years, it was assumed that Ashford Town FC

was formed in 1964. However, subsequent research

indicated the club was formed in 1958 as Ashford Albion

and first competed in the Hounslow & District

League. Albion won two consecutive promotions to

reach the Premier Division of the Hounslow League and

were still competing at this level when the club

changed its name to Ashford Town in 1964 and adopted

its distinctive Tangerine & White colours. The club

had a difficult first campaign and withdrew from the

Premier Division, assuming the Reserve Team’s place in

Division Two. Having rebuilt the club with a very young

team, Ashford Town rapidly advanced back through

the divisions of the Hounslow & District League, absorbing

Staines Youth Club FC on the way. Many individuals

from that era have remained with the Club and now

form the backbone of the Committee.

The Club was elected to the Surrey Intermediate

League (Western) in 1967 and promoted at the end of

their first season. The Ash Trees were League Cup finalists

in 1970-71 and League runners-up in 1972-73. In 1974

-75, Ashford enjoyed their best season under the managership

of ex-Fulham player Frank Reid, winning the

League by three points from perennial contenders

Merrow. Although the championship eluded the Club in

following seasons, it usually finished in the top four and

prior to season 1982-83 an invitation was extended by

Surrey County FA to become founder members of the

Surrey County Premier League. The invitation was readily

accepted and Ashford played their first match on 4th

September 1982, drawing 0-0 away to Farleigh Rovers.

Almost from its foundation, the Club had aspirations to

acquire its own ground and after one or two disappointments,

this was achieved in August 1985, when a

long lease was signed with Spelthorne Borough Council,

enabling the Club to move to its present home at Short

Lane, Stanwell. From what was nothing more than a

field, the facilities were quickly developed, with the first

match at Short Lane taking place in February 1986,

following two postponements for snow. Floodlights were

erected in September 1995 and a purpose built 150-

seater stand was built in 1998. An additional 100 seats

were installed on the opposite side in 2006, after the

club won promotion to the Isthmian League Premier

Division.

For both geographical and historical reasons, Ashford

affiliate to both Middlesex and Surrey FA’s and in 1989-

90, their last season as an Intermediate Club, they

reached the final of both Counties’ Premier Cup competitions,

beating Farnham Town in the Surrey version

but losing to Willesden Hawkeye in the Middlesex final.

Runners-up spot in the League was also secured and

with it the opportunity to enter senior football, as members

of the Combined Counties League, senior status

having been granted in May 1990. It was at this point

that the club changed its name to Ashford Town

(Middlesex) FC, to avoid confusion with the Kent club of

the same name. During its ten year membership of the

TODAY’S VISITORS

Combined Counties League, the Club never finished

below sixth place, and after finishing 3rd and2ndin

seasons 1992-93 and93-94, it went on to win the League

Championship for four successive seasons. It was a

relative disappointment to only come 4th in 1998-99,

even though the Club won the League Cup but a 5th

championship in just six seasons was secured in 99-00,

along with the Middlesex Charity Cup, the first ever

senior county cup honour.

Ashford joined the Isthmian League for season 2000-01

and finishing in third place, secured promotion to Division

Two at the first attempt. The first season in Division

Two did not see the Club making sufficient progress and

after a series of indifferent results, long serving manager

Dave Kent left the Club on 28 March 2002. His replacement

was Nathan Wharf, a long-serving former player,

who stepped up from Reserve Team management.

Further major improvements were made to the ground

to enable the Club to be granted a B-grade and to

take its place in the newly regionalised Division One of

the Isthmian League. A poor start saw the Club in the

bottom echelons of the table but a number of new

signings saw a significant improvement and a 17th

place finish, which was an excellent performance after

winning just one of the opening 16 league matches.

Further progress was made in 2003-04 as the Club finished

12th in Division 1 South. In the close season prior to

2004-05, the pitch was completely relaid to include

both irrigation and drainage systems, at a cost of

around £50,000, mostly financed by the Football Stadia

Improvement Fund.

The Club embarked upon new adventures in season

2004-05 in the Southern League for the first time, having

been transferred over as a result of a restructure of the

National League System. The 4th Qualifying Round of

the FA Cup was reached and Mark Butler, renowned

goal scorer in his day with Aldershot Town, Staines Town

and others was promoted from Assistant Manager to

Manager following the resignation of Nathan Wharf in

December 2004. The play-offs were reached but resulted

in a narrow defeat at Evesham United after extra

time. In 2005-06, Ashford finished second in Division One

West of the Southern League, to secure promotion to

Step 3. This brought about a return to the Isthmian

League for season 2006-07 and saw Ashford competing

at their highest ever level. The season brought consolidation

of the new status with the added bonus of

reaching and winning the Westview (League) Cup Final

when Ashford triumphed 4-1 over Dover Athletic at

Bromley.

Ashford rallied from the foot of the table in November

2007 but missed a place in the promotion play-offs at

the end of the 2007-08 season. The senior side reached

the Final of the Southern Combination Cup, the Reserves

reached the Finals of both the Middlesex Premier

and Surrey Premier Cups, while the Under-18 squad

were champions of the Southern Youth League. The

2008-09 season saw Ashford win their opening six

matches to top the table. Mark Butler’s side followed

this up with an FA Cup run which saw them come close

to eliminating Forest Green Rovers in the Fourth Qualify-

ing Round at Short Lane. Rovers won the replay and

went on to run Derby County close in the Third Round.

Ashford endured a difficult winter, which saw them flirt

with relegation, before a late resurgence saw the side

safely into mid-table. The cup competitions added

much adventure to the season. Ashford followed up

their exploits in the FA Cup with runs to the semi-finals of

both the Middlesex Senior and Isthmian League Cups

and end their campaign by defeating Conference

Premier outfit Woking 3-2 to win the Surrey Senior Cup.

The 2009-10 season saw Ashford make a reasonable

start to the campaign, but the Ash Trees were shocked

when manager Mark Butler tendered his resignation on

Friday 23rd October, in order to take up the Manager’s

role at Margate, who were struggling at the foot of the

table. Ashford appointed former Leicester City and

Bradford City midfielder Jamie Lawrence as his replacement,

and the Jamaican international immediately led

his new charges on a twelve-match unbeaten run.

However, issues off the pitch were causing problems for

the club and a number of players, including leading

goal scorer Byron Harrison left for Carshalton Athletic,

where Mark Butler had accepted a coaching role after

leaving Margate, where he had been in charge for just

three months.

Ashford found scoring a problem after Harrison left and

a dreadful run of form saw them go from the fringe of

the play-off zone to battling relegation. Sadly, a heavy

defeat for Ashford, coupled with wins for Carshalton

and Margate saw the latter two clubs survive, Margate

receiving a reprieve for finishing fourth from bottom. The

club were initially placed in the Central Division of the

Southern League for 2010 but were then offered the

chance to remain at Step 3 of the non-league pyramid.

However, as this was as a replacement for defunct

Southern League side Merthyr Tydfil, the decision was

made that the increase in travelling would be a burden

for the club and they elected to remain in the Central

Division. During this time, Bob Parker stepped down from

his role as Chairman after twenty-eight years in the role.

The club’s home ground was renamed the Robert Parker

Stadium in honour of Bob, who remains at the club

as President.

The club entered a new era in the Central Division of

the Southern League with Jamie Lawrence at the helm

and with a mixture of established local players and new

faces but the season was a challenging one. The club

played some sparkling football at times and enjoyed an

exciting run in the FA Trophy, reaching the Last 32 in the

competition before losing at home to Dartford. However,

League form was patchy and the club finished 16th.

One bright spark was the club winning the Southern

Combination Cup, defeating Hanworth Villa 1-0 in the

Final. Jamie Lawrence resigned as Manager in June

2011 and the club immediately appointed his assistant,

Paul Burgess, to take the helm after more than 21 years

at the club, including 683 First Team appearances.

Despite having little time to do it and few resources at

his disposal, “Burgo” assembled a young and exciting

team. Although any hopes of the promotion play-offs

were dashed by a run where the club failed to win at

home for four months, Ashford finished the season

strongly, winning two Cup Finals in 48 hours. In the Middlesex

Charity Cup Final, the Ash Trees were 3-0 down

to Northwood after 48 minutes before substitute Kofi

Lockhart-Adams scored four times to put his team

ahead. The game finished 4-4, with Ashford winning the

penalty shoot-out 4-2. Two days later, Ashford defeated

Badshot Lea 3-1 to add the Aldershot Senior Cup to the

cabinet, aided by a fine performance from Paul

McCarthy, who had saved two penalties in the first

Final. A memorable season was capped by the club

being named winners of the Southern League Fair Play

Award. The 2012-13 campaign saw Ashford reach the

Final of the Middlesex Senior Cup against nearneighbours

Staines Town. However, Ashford were unable

to claim the trophy, eventually falling to a 2-0 defeat.

At the end of that season, assistant manager Steve

Battams left the club for work reasons. Youth Team

Manager Ben Murray, who had been coaching at

Ashford since his teens and won an FA Community

Award, was promoted into the senior management

team. An awful start to the 2013-14 season saw the Ash

Trees cut adrift at the foot of the Southern League Central

Division and Paul Burgess was relieved of his duties

after an 8-1 defeat at Dunstable Town. Ben Murray was

appointed Manager and although results did not improve

initially, performances and discipline did. A rally

during the final months of the campaign offered hope

of a remarkable ‘great escape’, although relegation

was confirmed at North Greenford United. As a result,

Ashford returned to the Combined Counties League.

The Ash Trees were able to renew a number of old

friendships and friendly rivalries and the greater number

of local matches rekindled some enthusiasm that had

been lost towards the end of Ashford’s time in the

Southern League. Ashford’s first campaign back in the

competition saw them finish third, while their second

saw Town claim promotion. The club’s return to Step 4

was earned after Ashford finished second in the

League, thanks to a remarkable end-of-season run

which saw the Ash Trees finish the season with 96 points.

This was 10 points behind the Champions, Hartley

Wintney, but as ‘The Row’ did not then have the requisite

facilities to play at Step 4, they could not go up.

They helped Ashford to do so by defeating Camberley

Town in their final match to ensure that Ashford claimed

the runners-up spot.

Ashford’s reward was a third brief spell in the Southern

League. A good start to the 2016-17 season allayed any

fears that a return to the Central Division would see a

repeat of the club’s previous struggles, while a genuine

highlight of the campaign was a third triumph in the

Middlesex Charity Cup. The Final saw Ashford defeat

Wealdstone of the National League to claim the magnificent

trophy. For 2017-18, what had been the Central

Division of the Southern League became the East Division.

Awful weather made for a difficult season for all

clubs and contributed to Ashford’s campaign petering

out into a mid-table finish. With 2018-19’s League reorganisations

the club moved back into the Isthmian

League as members of the South Central Division.

The season was one of transition for the club. The sad

loss of our Chairman Dave Baker during the close season

saw the position of Chairman split into a joint role

between Alan Constable & Nick Bailey, both of whom

are keen to continue the development of the club.

PLAYER SPONSORSHIP

The all new 2019/20 Player Sponsorship scheme is once again going to be administered

by Phil Nightingale. Phil_nightingale@hotmail.com

As with last season there is a flat rate of £50.00 per player per season and to avoid the

disappointment of the past when your favourite player has already been taken,

players can now have more than one sponsor.

See Phil on match days; you’ll find him lurking near the turn-styles before the match

wearing his slinky off-the-shoulder Jasper Conran inspired blue hi-viz jacket.

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

THE VICE CHAIRMAN

Bowers & Pitsea FC U23’s 2 - 5 Tooting & Mitcham Utd FC U23’s

Bluefin Sports Insurance Development League

Champion of Champions final

Held at Aveley FC - Wednesday 8th May 2019

The young Terrors finished off their season in style at Aveley by picking up their second title of the season. Just two

weeks after securing the Bluefin Sports Insurance Development League South Division title, they took on North

Division champions, Bowers & Pitsea in a Champion of Champions final.

The Terrors were out of the blocks very quickly, putting their opponents goal under pressure from the start. However,

it took until the 23rd minute of the game to make the breakthrough, when Shamal Edwards, recently returned

from a 12 week loan spell at Erith Town, dinked the ball over the 'keeper from a tight angle to give the Terrors the

lead. Three minutes later, the lead was doubled by Junior Timite as the Bowers 'keeper failed to hold on to a long

range effort from the edge of the box. On 30 minutes, it became 3-0 as Razzaq Coleman turned the ball in from

10 yards out after it had been pulled back for him from the right by Sam Folarin. There was still more to come as

Shamal Edwards scored his second of the game, and Tooting's fourth on 36 minutes, as he struck the ball in from a

tight angle off of the inside of a post.

Half Time : Bowers & Pitsea FC U23’s 0 - 4 Tooting & Mitcham Utd FC U23’s

The second half was a lot less one side as a determined Bowers & Pitsea side battled hard to try and get themselves

back into the game. All credit to them as they managed to pull two goals back before Man of the Match,

Shamal Edwards completed his hat trick in the 89th minute.

2019/20: What’s next ?

Finally, we have our first home game of the new season.

What a relief ! The hard part is over - the close

season, I mean. It has been eventful, challenging,

exciting and successful, so we do hope that the football

will be just the same.

Last season, we implemented a new strategy for rebuilding

the club’s reputation and league position by

recruiting and developing talented young players,

promoting them much faster than in the past, and

integrating the First Team operation more closely with

that of our U23’s and U18’s. We vaguely hoped that

this would set off a positive cycle of recruitment, which

would help us strengthen all our squads, and maybe in

a few seasons we might have a player move up from

here to the professional game.

We were totally wrong. It happened much faster than

that. We extend our very best wishes to Isaiah Jones,

Sam Folarin, Abraham Odoh and Lexus Beeden who

are now pursuing their careers at Middlesbrough (2),

Charlton and Reading respectively.

What that does for our club is potentially massive.

Ambitious young footballers network like mad, especially

in these days of social media. A club’s reputation

in that space can be boosted (or, just as easily, shattered)

so we know we have to keep working hard to

improve everything we do, if we are to progress to the

level we aspire to. The upward transfer of our players is

the tangible proof that we are mostly getting things

right.

Our supporters, who had been quick to spot the talent

on the pitch, were understandably disappointed to be

saying goodbye to them. They raised serious questions

about the prospects for advancement of our own First

Team with these losses from the club. The truth is, that

we do not yet know whether the progressive improvement

in our general reputation will boost our recruitment

enough to offset our losses. In fact, it must do

more than simply maintain the status quo - we need to

achieve an overall strengthening.

The coming season will tell us a lot about this. We

don’t set strict targets, but we do want to see year-onyear

improvement. So, what are the signs of that ?

Firstly: the trials. We had around 250 players apply this

year - a marked upturn. I was amazed that we had

enough managers and coaches to deal with that

number, but I was assured that it was not too difficult

to sort the “possibles” from the “no hopers”. Whatever

happened next, I do not know, but I do know that our

supporters were panicking because all they knew

about was departures – nothing about new signings.

We learned another lesson - give out more information,

it never hurts.

The pre-season friendlies went well (7 wins, 1 draw, 1

loss) so of course those who believe in the Gambler’s

Fallacy will say that, after a run like that, we are due

for a run of losses. But, the Gambler’s Fallacy is what it

says it is – a fallacy, untrue, plain wrong. So, we are not

spooked by that myth, we feel strong and we are

starting this season with quiet confidence that we will

improve on last year.

And speaking of the

Gambler’s Fallacy, what

happened next in this

close season was that

the Isthmian League

announced that their

sponsor for the next two

seasons will be………an

online gambling company.

Now, that presents a

problem for us. We

have an ethos of

developing young players to the best of their footballing

ability but we know that the majority will not

make their careers in the sport so we don’t want them

just to leave disappointed and with nothing gained.

What we offer them are the positive lessons of football:

respect for team-mates, opponents, managers and

officials, the rewards for hard work, the need for

discipline and organisation, fitness and mental wellbeing,

life-long friendships, etc., that will help them to

be positive contributors to society. The promotion of

gambling is really incompatible with that. So, we have

joined a number of other clubs who have expressed

their objections to this sponsorship.

More welcome news was the appointment of a new

Chair, Caroline McRoyall, who is a former player and

coach and was until recently the Chief Executive of

Surrey County FA. She brings to this club her

exceptional knowledge of the institutions of this sport

and will be deploying her organisational abilities and

modernising approach here. The previous Chairman,

the owner, Steve Adkins, is still deeply involved in the

direction of the football club, but wishes to

concentrate his efforts on achieving financial

sustainability and completing the site developments.

Caroline will be publishing her own ideas for the football

club in a later matchday programme, so I do not

wish to pre-empt what she might say.

As for my own position, I greatly welcomed Caroline’s

appointment and was pleased that she wants me to

stay on, and I am positive about my gender-free new

title - Vice Chair.

I cannot sign off without mentioning one more highlight

of the close season. The supporters Tidy-Up Day.

During the course of last season, the supporters have

revamped their organisation and a lot of voluntary

work has been done which should be apparent

around the stadium today. We had some 20 volunteers

at the stadium on Tidy-Up Day, which is a marked

increase. Nick Shaw earned praise for his BBQ and

chef’s outfit. The volunteers were fully occupied with

sweeping the stand and terraces, weeding, rubbish

clearance, the annual stewards’ coat washing (don’t

ask), and sprucing up the toilets. “A good time was

had by all”, so they said.

Don’t you just love football?

Everyone at Official TMUFC was deeply saddened to learn of the passing on the

evening of Thursday 8th August of club stalwart, Dave McCann. Dave had been involved

with the club, fulfilling a number of different roles on the committee and

Board of T&MU FC Members Ltd., over a period of 50 plus years.

He was still a regular follower of the team both home and away right up until the

middle of last season when two periods of hospitalisation prevented him from getting

out and about. His presence at the club will be sadly missed.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Dave’s family and friends.

An appreciation by Chris Jackson

When I received the phone call from John Cooper

advising that Dave had passed away, it came as

quite a shock. I had been briefed the night before, at

the Charlton match, that Dave had suffered a fall in

Farnborough Hospital and would most likely have to

be transferred to a Nursing Home. The devastating

news that John gave me immediately brought back

lots of memories.

I had of course seen Dave many times in the 1960’s

and early 70’s as we both followed the Terrors at both

home and away games. It was only when I was invited

to join the GMC in 1976 that I really got to know

him. I was asked by the Chairman if I would become

Assistant to David as Treasurer. During that time working

for Dave I got to know how senior non-league

teams operated. I learnt an awful lot from him.

In the late 1980’s the Club started to get into financial

difficulties, and a lot of pressure and worry fell onto

David’s shoulders. He was the one that had to deal

with the Bank so that the Club could continue to function.

He must have suffered many sleepless nights.

Many people given the stress and worry the club’s

situation was causing, might have been tempted to

walk away but Dave stuck it out and the Club owes

him a tremendous debt of gratitude. Apart from his

undoubted accounting ability, David had other attributes.

One of the most important was his discretion. If

you told him something in confidence it would remain

with him. He was also a very kind and caring person.

The last few years had not been kind to Dave. He

could never quite come to

terms with new technology and

his problems with Sat Navs have

led to him arriving to at least

one game after half time. If I

had missed certain games he

would always address me as

‘Hello Stranger’ as if he didn’t

know who I was.

Many in the “Members Club”

witnessed some very heated

discussions between myself and

Dave, as we both had very

strong opinions on certain matters.

They might have formed

the opinion that we didn’t like

each other which couldn’t be

further from the truth.

The last time I saw him was

DAVE M C CANN

when I visited him in Farnborough hospital. We spent

about 10 minutes talking about his condition and the

next 45 discussing the football club. On his bed was

the Non-League Paper which was more of an interest

to him than any daily newspaper could have been.

Somehow I don’t think he would have been happy in

a Nursing Home.

Goodbye Dave, we will all miss you.

Dave was never happier than when

banking the proceeds of a big

match - as here with the proceeds

from the T&MU FC v Crystal Palace

Surrey Senior Cup final match

back in 2001

Chris Jackson is a past President and

current Vice President of T&MU FC Members Ltd.

A tribute by Steve J Paine

I have known Dave since I was about 6 years old.

My father was the physio at the club and Dave used

to be his assistant helping with the potions, lotions,

and exercise routines to keep the players fit and well. I

also remember well from those days that when I first

met Dave he was a very large man, but put under an

exercise and diet regime by my father the pounds fell

away and he retained his much trimmer figure for the

rest of his life.

When my father left Tooting when I was in my very

early teens, but I continued to support the club and

Dave became something of a father figure as far as

the football was concerned. He always got me to

and from matches, and he always took me as his

guest on the player’s coach for away games ! In my

later years I worked both for and with Dave in various

roles regarding the finances and two things will always

remain with me, his quickness with mental arithmetic

and how neat his writing

was (A touch of irony there

methinks - Ed) ! Oh, and one

other thing, he never used a

pen, always a pencil.

I remember well the Monday

night committee meetings, the

arguments across the table, the

challenges of running an amateur

club, but through it all

Dave kept the finances going

no matter what pressure we

were under. I think it would be

very fair to say that without

Dave and Chris we would not

have a club today.

Bringing us up to the present,

after many years of working in

the Far East, I returned to watch

the team in early 2016 and sure

Despite dominating for long periods Tooting went down to a 2-0 defeat to the Met Police at Dorking Wanderers

FC the home of the Surrey FA. The Final saw clear cut chances at a premium the Terrors only real effort of the first

half came in the 20th minute when a swerving Danny Bassett shot went inches over. Met Police opened the scoring

in the 42nd minute when Jordi Ndozid’s speculative long-range shot bounced over Ethan Wady into the net. It

got worse for the Terrors just before the break when we lost possession in the middle of our own half and man of

the match Rhys King went onto score from an acute angle.

Half Time : Metropolitan Police FC. 2 - 0 Tooting & Mitcham United FC

Met Police fashioned a good move seven minutes into the second off but Rudy Allen fired just over. United replied

with a Danny Bassett cross-shot which just missed the target. Tooting then forced a series of corners and had a

couple of free-kicks in promising positions but could not get anything on target to test Thomas Williams in the Met

goal. The Terrors kept battling away but it was not to be and there was no further scoring. Congratulations to the

Met Police on lifting the County Cup, on what was a disappointing night for Tooting. As usual the Terrors’ fans were

Hertford Town FC 0 - 1 Tooting & Mitcham United FC

Isthmian League South Central Division - 17th August 2019 - Att 160

The Terrors dominated possession in the first half and for most of the opening forty five minutes, controlled play.

However, despite their dominance in the middle of the park they struggled to get a serious effort on target, the

best they could manage being a couple of half hearted long range efforts from the edge of the box which Hertford’s

‘keeper Nick Hayes, on loan from Norwich City, gathered with ease. The one opportunity that fell the way of

the home side during the half was snuffled out by an alert James Shaw in the Terrors’ goal, who was quickly off his

line to narrow the angle and block a shot with his legs following a brisk attack down Tooting’s right.

Half time : Hertford Town FC 0 - 0 Tooting & Mitcham United FC

The half time substitution of Razzaq Coleman for ‘Didi’ Castanho saw a slight change in shape for the Terrors who

continued to dominate, but still they failed to create the opening required. However two further changes in the

final thirty minutes saw Tooting up the pace and at last started to put the young Hertford ‘keeper to the test. Some

great reflex saves from the ‘keeper and some last ditch defending kept out efforts from Dominic Morgan-Griffiths,

Razzaq Coleman and two from Hady Ghandour. There was also a great opportunity for Shamal Edwards who’s

effort was hit high over the cross bar. The break though finally came Tooting’s way on 85 minutes after continued

pressure on the Hertford goal saw the Terrors win a corner out on the left. Omari Hibbert stooped low on the edge

of the six yard box to head the ball goalward but his effort struck the back of Yildiz. However, Hibbert was quick to

react and lashed the ball into the back of the net. There were no last minute scares for the Terrors as they held on

to their hard earned three points, much to the satisfaction of the travelling fans.

South Park FC 1 - 1 Tooting & Mitcham United FC

Bostik League South Central Division - 22nd April 2019 - Att 155

Both teams came into the game needing a win for different reasons but neither got it as the sides played out a

hard-fought draw on a very warm afternoon. South Park with former Tooting player Jay Lovett at the helm got the

ideal start with a goal from Charlie Pitcher after just six minutes when he latched onto a loose ball in the area and

calmly slotted it past Ethan Wady. The only other chance of note in the half came in the 28th minute when the

home sides Great Evans was through on goal but his effort was blocked as was the rebound.

Half Time : South Park FC. 1 - 0. Tooting & Mitcham Utd FC

The Terrors had hardly threatened in the first half but that was about to change in the second period as Tooting

dominated for long periods. In the 59th minute South Park ‘keeper Michael Eacott saved well from Stefan Ilic, but

two minutes later United got a deserved equaliser when Ajani Domingo-Carrington made another of his superb

runs down the right and his cross was met by Hady Ghandour who powered home a close range header. At the

other end the home side had a rare chance when Ryan Healey headed just over from a free-kick. In the closing

stages Tooting put on relentless pressure and looked to have won it in stoppage time when a Peter Wedgeworth

free-kick was beaten out the ball found its way to Ajani Domingo-Carrington whose precision cross found Lexus

Beeden at the far post who jubilantly fired home to wild scenes only for the assistant’s flag to go up for a very tight

offside decision.

Tooting & Mitcham United FC 2 - 1 FC Romania

Bostik League South Central Division - 27th April 2019 - Att 176

The Terrors ended their league campaign with a narrow 2-1 success against a spirited FC Romania side on a very

blustery afternoon at the Campus Society Stadium. The visitors had the better of the opening half and had a

good chance in the 5th minute but Lawrence Neuruba could not hit the target when well placed. Four minutes

later they came close again when a header from Henry Mabassa thumped against the crossbar from a well flighted

corner. United had a couple of half chances through Hady Ghandour and Danny Bassett neither of which

tested the keeper.

Half Time : Tooting & Mitcham Utd FC 0 - 0 FC Romania

After the break with the wind at their backs Tooting took control of the encounter and Daryl Coleman had a couple

of efforts. It came as no surprise when Tooting took the lead in the 78th minute when Peter Wedgeworth made

a fine run down the left flank and his precision cross was slotted home by Hady Ghandour from point blank range.

Four minutes later we extended our lead when Daryl Coleman’s free-kick went in off Dontai Stewart who had only

been on the field a matter of three minutes. FC Romania reduced the arrears two minutes later when a cross from

Cristi Iacob was parried into his own net by Ethan Wady. In stoppage time only a fine save low down by Adrian

Darabant prevented Isaiah Jones from adding a third.

Summing up on a personal note I would like to thank the Management Team for their efforts and for all the hard

work they have put in throughout the season. They have built an excellent squad with some fine young players

combined with some trusty experience which has seen an abundance of scouts in attendance at our games.

Thanks to the players who have produced some very noteworthy displays and lastly our terrific fans for their continual

support throughout the campaign you have been top drawer.

Tooting & Mitcham beat their tenants Tooting Bec by 4-2 to lift the inaugural ‘Tooting Trophy’. Danny Bassett

lobbed home in the 3rd minute and midway through the half Stefan Ilic hit the woodwork. Tooting Bec drew level

after 37 minutes when they were awarded a penalty which Morgan Campbell saved but the rebound was put

away well. Four minutes later the Terrors were back in front through a good Danny Bassett goal and right on halftime

Dominic Morgan-Griffiths made it three with a wicked curling effort.

Half Time : Tooting & Mitcham Utd FC 3 - 1 Tooting Bec FC

Early in the second period United added a 4th when a Daryl Coleman free-kick was chested home by Stefan Ilic

and in the 85th minute Tooting Bec reduced the arrears with a close-range effort, which their efforts deserved.

enough, Dave was at every game. He did not make

the whole of some of the away games due to his

inability to understand his inbuilt Mercedes Sat Nav,

but he was always there by half time !

He will be missed by all, a true supporter, and I hope

that wherever you are now you are watching us and

we can do you proud this season and win the league!

Goodbye for now Dave, you will be sorely missed.

A Tribute by Ian Bullock

I was saddened to hear the news that my long standing

friend and colleague Dave McCann had passed

away.

I had known Dave for over 50 years. He was a very

loyal one club man who hardly ever missed a Tooting

& Mitcham match, home or away. He served on the

Club’s Committee in various roles for a great number

of years, many of them as Treasurer (he even got me

to do a bit of auditing for him once back in the day !)

I have very fond memories of Dave. A few years back

I had a book published called “Facts & Figures” which

was a centenary statistical history of the club, and

Dave offered me valuable assistance when I was

compiling the publication. The pair of us would spend

many hours in the Boardroom together on match

days discussing bygone times. One topic that would

regularly come up was the 1959 Nottingham Forest FA

Cup 3rd rd. tie at our beloved

Sandy Lane which

saw us both in attendance

and the terrible penalty

decision that robbed the

‘Terrors’ of victory over one

of the top professional

clubs in the country at the

time.

Dave knew that I was an

ardent Huddersfield Town

fan and when a Tooting

game had finished and we

both wandered back to

The club were also sorry to learn of the

passing earlier in the year of another

long time supporter, Martyn Harvey, following

a long illness.

Martyn begun watching Tooting as a boy

with his dad over forty years ago and as

a 12 year old, was taken to the infamous

Forest game at Sandy Lane. He had been a

regular supporter at home games ever

since, up until last season when illness

prevented him from attending.

One of Martyn’s son Steve’s memories of

his Dad is that he found and bought him

the programmes for the two games with

Forest for his 21st birthday.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to

his family and friends.

Dave (3rd from top left) pictured with other

members of the T&MU GMC in the early

‘80’s

the Boardroom quite often he was in there before me

and I would hear his voice say “your lot lost again

then” but it was all in good fun.

Dave would often write up the team sheets before

the Tooting home matches and I would sometimes

pull his leg by saying “I can’t read that name

Dave” (His trained spider would’ve made Dave excel

as a GP - Ed) In recent times the club rightly honoured

him for his past services to the football club by making

him a Vice President.

Dave was a very knowledgeable and sincere gentleman

and a club stalwart who it was my pleasure to

have known. My thoughts go out to Dave’s family

and friends at this sad time.

A Tribute by Mike Mein

Although I did not know Dave McCann personally, he

seemed to be a permanent fixture at the club over

many decades. Dave first appeared in the 1965/66

handbook as Assistant Treasurer, taking over the role

from Bob Creswell. Bob, another very long-term volunteer,

first joined Mitcham Wanderers in 1920, and

continued his duties with the amalgamated clubs

and was Assistant Treasurer. After Bob retired, Dave

continued in the same role for many years.

Over the last few years, I have often been to away

games, especially the mid-week games, and witnessed

Dave scurrying

along the path at quite a

rate, despite having a

walking stick for assistance.

I know he was always with

a small group of supporters

who went everywhere

together. He was a true

legend for his service to the

club, and will be missed by

all at the club, especially

his close friends and family.

Mike Mein is a long time

supporter of T&MU FC

Two long time Tooting fans and friends

of Martyn’s give their tributes.

“I was lucky to be able stand with Martyn for well over

ten years opposite the main stand through good, bad

and indifferent team performances with never a bad

word towards the opponents or match officials unless it

was deserved: which meant every match.

He had been unwell for a number of years but was

able to finish off his years of attending games in our big

promotion season. He was a lovely bloke who I will

miss.” Ev (the Dog)

“I also stood with Martyn, Ev and Paul Irons for over a

decade. Martyn was the one that convinced me to do

the Vernon Francis fund. A true gent and Tooting and

Mitcham through and through.” Gary Walker

Ashford Town (Middx) FC - by Ian Bullock

Ashford Town (Middx) FC 2 - 3 Tooting & Mitcham United FC

Isthmian League Division One South - 9th September 2003

This was the second meeting between the clubs within the space of ten days having met in the FA Cup previously.

The Terrors opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Scot Kinch sent in a nicely weighted cross which Richard

Thompson glanced home off the post. Ashford Town levelled after 32 minutes when a Adam Foulser cross was

headed in at the near post by Tony Eggington. Tooting regained the lead on 73 minutes when a long clearance

from ‘keeper Tommy Dunn found its way to Richard Thompson who proceeded to fire past Tony Wells in the home

goal. Three minutes later Richard Thompson completed his hat-trick with a close-range finish after good work by

Dean Worsfold. Ashford kept battling away and they pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time when Jamie

Read nodded in a Steve Croxford cross.

Tooting & Mitcham United FC 2 - 3 Ashford Town (Middx) FC

Bostik League South Central Division - 15th August 2018

The visitors opened the scoring in the 21st minute when the impressive Elliott Poley headed home at the far post

from a corner. Soon after Zaq Coleman hit the outside of the post, but after 36 minutes Tooting drew level through

Isaiah Jones after a good move down the right flank. In the 55th minute Mark Bitmead saw his strike hit the post

but 14 minutes later Town regained the lead from the spot, James Cottee converting. Five minutes later Ashford

increased their advantage through Max Webb. Then Morgan Campbell made a fine stop to deny Nebay Haile

making it four. In stoppage time Zaq Coleman pulled a goal back for the Terrors.

Serg Zamara (Reece Cave), Dominic Morgan-Griffiths (Dan Clements), Kadeem Ajeon, Elijah Simpson (Billy Dunn),

Ashford Town (Middx) FC 1 - 2 Tooting & Mitcham United FC

Bostik League South Central Division - 13th April 2019

The game started as a fairly evenly contested affair, although a couple of fine saves by Ethan Wady and stout

defending by the Terrors' backline were required midway through the period to keep them on level terms. However,

it was Danny Bassett scoring his sixth goal in as many games, who put the Terrors in front on 35 minutes to ensure

that Tooting went in at the break with their noses in front.

The Terrors doubled their lead on 50 minutes. This time it was Isaiah Jones causing the damage slotting the ball

home left footed from nine yards. Ashford got themselves back into the game on the hour mark though as they

reduced the deficit through a wonderful solo effort and strike from Nebay Haille. Fortunately, for Tooting, their goal

remained in tact for the remainder of half plus the six minutes of added time(!) to come away with all three points.

THE ‘MEMBERS CLUB’

HOW TO JOIN T&MU FC MEMBERS Ltd

Tooting & Mitcham United Football Club Members Limited is a limited company that does not issue shares

but is limited by guarantee and instead has a membership. It is itself a business within the main business

holding a 10% shareholding and has representation on the main board sharing in the decision making. It’s

all part of what makes a community project effective.

You may be someone who is a parent of a child in the youth setup, or a fan who watches every Saturday.

Maybe you use the facility to play a different sport or use the gym to keep fit or possibly have been involved

in an educational project in the main building. Whatever the case we want to encourage you to

become a member and become engaged. A strong membership can help to shape the future and as an

individual you can be someone who introduces new ideas and helps to make them happen. You could

also take on an operational role or even become a director. We also have a new membership secretary,

Tom Paine, who is full of energy and new ideas that we hope you will be excited by.

Annual membership runs from 1st July to 30th June and costs a modest £15, and this year we are again

offering family membership for £25. Members often pay via standing order and in every way we try to

make joining as simple as possible.

For the 2019-20 season we have also introduced a whole raft of rewards for our members and details of

these are published below.
