PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Fellow Members,
I have been very impressed this month by the attention that my first President’s Letter afforded
me around the Club. All this time, I thought I was the only one who read it. Keep up the good
work. I was also informed by a number of my squash playing compatriots that they couldn’t ever
recall a squash player in the President’s role. While this won’t get them any special privileges, it
will get them a mention in the Bulletin...so here goes. I am pleased to say that this past April 24th,
on a beautiful spring Saturday, the squash playing ranks were out in force for the annual Club
Championship Finals day, featuring twelve hotly contested matches. Congratulations to all those
who achieved the Finals in their division and especially to our champions. It was a great day. We
don’t often get to say publicly what a great job Sharon Bradey and Brad Mosier do, cloistered over
in the athletic wing as they are, so I will take this moment to do just that. We owe a great debt to
them for running such a fantastic program and for managing to get all the tournament draws
played on time. A truly astonishing feat. Thank you.
By now, you have probably all received a packet in the mail about the Harvard Club’s Legacy
Membership Program. If you didn’t already know, membership in the Club is available to your
children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents and even in-laws! The same benefits that you
currently enjoy can be enjoyed by them as well: access to both of our Boston clubhouses for
dining and events, overnight accommodations in our updated guest rooms, our unique Reciprocal
Club network of over 140 private clubs throughout the US and the world, and participation in
our legendary squash program. Imagine the benefits of expanding the Harvard Club family with
your family!
In the family vein, since I failed to plug Mothers Day last month, I will not mention the annual
Fathers Day Buffet on Sunday, June 20th, with seatings at 11 am and 1 pm, as it wouldn’t be fair
to the Moms. I will, however, plug the annual Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, July
4th, from 8 pm to 11 pm. Come and enjoy some of the best views of the fireworks anywhere in
the city at the Downtown Club. This fun-filled, gender neutral night for all ages always sells-out,
so make your reservations early. It may be too late by the time the next Bulletin comes out!
I know I mentioned this last month but I would like to once again call your attention to the
upcoming Member Appreciation Night on June 10th. It promises to be a fantastic and well
attended event. It seems, though, that some members have felt that reservations made for the
postponed February event would automatically apply to June but, unfortunately, that is not the
case. If you registered for Member Appreciation Night when it was postponed in February, please
visit www.harvardclub.com or call the Activities staff at 617-450-8496 to register for it again. The
Club apologizes for any confusion.
Last but not least, please note that on Monday, June 21st, Summer Hours for both Athletics and
Dining will begin. Please plan accordingly and have a great summer!

Romanian movie by Director Corneliu Porumboiu. Twenty years after the fall of Communism,

really won the revolution, if indeed there was one? This film is considered “a study of the post
Communist psyche,” and its universal appeal comes from its faultless comic timing and the

Join the French Conversation Table on Tuesdays, June 8th, and July
13th, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the Grill Bar. This special interest group
will meet the second Tuesday of each month (except holidays) to
speak French together, to become more fluent and less rusty, to
promote “amitié” and to have fun for an hour and a half or so.
Members and their guests with French language skills at all levels are

“Top Producer” — a novel by Norb Vonnegut (St. Martin’s Press /
Minotaur Books) is our June selection.
“Vonnegut’s debut meets the gold standard for financial thrillers as it

Dr. Tamar March was born in Czechoslovakia, and as a child, she and
her parents spent several months hiding in tents in the Carpathian
Mountains where her father served in the Resistance during World War
II. After fleeing from Czechoslovakia, the family relocated to Brussels
and ultimately emigrated to the United States when Dr. March was in her teens. She attended
Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, where she was inducted into Phi Beta
Kappa. A Woodrow Wilson Scholar, Dr. March received her doctorate from Harvard, and was for
many years in academia, teaching and administration at various institutions before her role as
Dean at Radcliffe. Thirteen years ago, Dr. March founded Arden Seminars, which provide intense
three-to-five day sessions in which participants revisit and discuss classic themes and readings.
Our conversation with Dr. March will include the topic “Apology & Forgiveness.”

Our Athletic staff team is here to welcome
and assist you with a variety of wellness
activities and information including sportspecific
exercises, training tips, nutritional
guidance and customized workouts. We
showcase a very popular Fitness Center with
continually updated strength training
equipment, free weights, a boxing gym, and a
complete room full of state-of-the-art
cardiovascular equipment including:
treadmills, elliptical crosstrainers, stationary
bikes, stairmasters, rowers, a versa-climber, and stretching and core strengthening equipment.
We are traditionally a Squash Club and therefore offer an exceptional squash program with four
international courts, a doubles court and five American Hardball courts. We have in-house squash
competitions, traveling teams, and professional squash coaching and lessons for beginners right up
through the elite “A” player level, as well as a very well-attended juniors program. We also offer
massage therapy by appointment.

2010 BIGGEST LOSER WINNER!
Congratulations to member John McConnell on winning
the Fitness Center’s 2010 Biggest Loser Contest! This is an
annual competition hosted by the Harvard Club of Boston,
and this year it started on February 1st and ended on March
31st, 2010. As a result of dedication and hard work, John
lost a total of 24 pounds. For all of his efforts, the Athletic
Department has awarded him a $100 Gift Certificate to the
Harvard Club of Boston!
The Athletic Staff would also like to congratulate the other
members who participated in the competition for all their
hard work and dedication, as well. Although these members

ADVOCATES FOR HARVARD’S RESERVE OFFICERS’
TRAINING CORPS
The Advocates for Harvard ROTC are seeking your moral support as an Advocate member
to push for formal Harvard recognition of the ROTC programs now serving Harvard cadets
and midshipmen. Currently, the Advocates have over 2,300 members of whom most are US
military veterans, and all have a Harvard degree or a direct Harvard connection. In effect,
our objective is to promote real diversity at Harvard by being inclusive of those Harvard
students who believe in duty, honor and country, as well as courage, integrity and
commitment. At a minimum, we strive for a climate of tolerance and inclusion at Harvard
for those Harvard undergraduates who wish to serve our great country as commissioned
officers throughout the ROTC programs based at MIT.
Did you know that Harvard has more Medal of Honor recipients than any other university
in the world except for West Point and the Naval Academy? Join the Advocates, and you will
be sent a bio with pictures of the 17 Crimson warriors who merited the Medal of Honor for
valor beyond the call of duty in combat. Your membership in the Advocates can be as private
or public as you want, and will serve as the basis for the distribution of our annual newsletter,
as well as demonstrate the depth of support for our noble cause with the Harvard
administration, the Harvard Corporation, and the Board of Overseers. The Advocates for

Racquet Club (WRC). From June 1st through
September 12th, Harvard Club members will
have access to all of WRC’s facilities including:

tennis courts lighted until 11 pm, outdoor
swimming and whirlpools, and 40-Love Café
with Monday and Wednesday evening poolside
BBQs. Harvard Club members may use the
WRC on a fee-per-visit basis during this
period. Special monthly and seasonal rates are
