PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Fellow Members,
I have been very impressed this month by the attention that my first President’s Letter afforded
me around the Club. All this time, I thought I was the only one who read it. Keep up the good
work. I was also informed by a number of my squash playing compatriots that they couldn’t ever
recall a squash player in the President’s role. While this won’t get them any special privileges, it
will get them a mention in the Bulletin...so here goes. I am pleased to say that this past April 24th,
on a beautiful spring Saturday, the squash playing ranks were out in force for the annual Club
Championship Finals day, featuring twelve hotly contested matches. Congratulations to all those
who achieved the Finals in their division and especially to our champions. It was a great day. We
don’t often get to say publicly what a great job Sharon Bradey and Brad Mosier do, cloistered over
in the athletic wing as they are, so I will take this moment to do just that. We owe a great debt to
them for running such a fantastic program and for managing to get all the tournament draws
played on time. A truly astonishing feat. Thank you.
By now, you have probably all received a packet in the mail about the Harvard Club’s Legacy
Membership Program. If you didn’t already know, membership in the Club is available to your
children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents and even in-laws! The same benefits that you
currently enjoy can be enjoyed by them as well: access to both of our Boston clubhouses for
dining and events, overnight accommodations in our updated guest rooms, our unique Reciprocal
Club network of over 140 private clubs throughout the US and the world, and participation in
our legendary squash program. Imagine the benefits of expanding the Harvard Club family with
your family!
In the family vein, since I failed to plug Mothers Day last month, I will not mention the annual
Fathers Day Buffet on Sunday, June 20th, with seatings at 11 am and 1 pm, as it wouldn’t be fair
to the Moms. I will, however, plug the annual Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, July
4th, from 8 pm to 11 pm. Come and enjoy some of the best views of the fireworks anywhere in
the city at the Downtown Club. This fun-filled, gender neutral night for all ages always sells-out,
so make your reservations early. It may be too late by the time the next Bulletin comes out!
I know I mentioned this last month but I would like to once again call your attention to the
upcoming Member Appreciation Night on June 10th. It promises to be a fantastic and well
attended event. It seems, though, that some members have felt that reservations made for the
postponed February event would automatically apply to June but, unfortunately, that is not the
case. If you registered for Member Appreciation Night when it was postponed in February, please
visit www.harvardclub.com or call the Activities staff at 617-450-8496 to register for it again. The
Club apologizes for any confusion.
Last but not least, please note that on Monday, June 21st, Summer Hours for both Athletics and
Dining will begin. Please plan accordingly and have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Nicholas Iselin
AN EVENING OF ROMANIAN
FILM: “12:08 - EAST OF
BUCHAREST”
Tuesday, June 1, 2010
One Federal Street, 38th Floor
5:30 pm Presentation ~ Complimentary!
Club Member Roxana von Kraus presents “12:08 - East of Bucharest,” an award winning
Romanian movie by Director Corneliu Porumboiu. Twenty years after the fall of Communism,
Romanians are still wondering what happened on those December days: Was it a spontaneous
movement, or an orchestrated event? Students died, and the new Communists followed. Who
really won the revolution, if indeed there was one? This film is considered “a study of the post
Communist psyche,” and its universal appeal comes from its faultless comic timing and the
humanity of its characters and their situations. It is the perfect Balkan approach to crisis —
through painful humor — that, after all, helped us all survive Communism.
RESERVATIONS are required for this complimentary event, and reservations information is at
the bottom of the opposite page.
A discount coupon for dining in the Crimson Pub that evening will be offered to all attendees!
BUSINESS / PUBLIC POLICY BOOK
DISCUSSION GROUP DOWNTOWN
Friday, June 11, 2010 ~ 8 am to 8:50 am
One Federal Street, 38th Floor
Beginning the summer with our first work of contemporary fiction,
“Top Producer” — a novel by Norb Vonnegut (St. Martin’s Press /
Minotaur Books) is our June selection.
“Vonnegut’s debut meets the gold standard for financial thrillers as it
puts the frenzied cutthroat world of Wall Street’s best stockbrokers —
a/k/a the “top producers” — on brilliant display. Ripples from the
bizarre murder of Charlie Kelemen — a wealthy hedge fund operator
— quickly reach his best friend, Grove O’Rourke. A top producer at
the boutique investment bank Sachs, Kidder and Carnegie, O’Rourke tries to help Kelemen’s
widow sort out some financial questions. This process leads him deeper and deeper into a
labyrinth of deceit. As fallout from Charlie’s death and dealings start to taint O’Rourke, the
sharks, inside and outside his own firm, smell blood and begin to circle. Vonnegut, himself a
veteran fund manager, handles the arcane terminology and slang of Wall Street with aplomb,
never letting it get in the way of the story.” — Publishers Weekly (September 2009)
Our Book Discussion Group addressing business, economics, and public policy issues will be
meeting at 8 am on Friday morning, June 11th. Optional à la carte breakfast service will be
available in the Crimson Pub starting at 7 am. As always, we will officially adjourn at 8:50 am
for those with pressing commitments, although continued discussion is welcome with those
who can remain. Members and guests are welcome, and guests may charge their breakfasts to
their own credit cards (Visa, Master Card, or American Express). For reservations, questions
and suggestions for future books and topics, please contact Tom Faulhaber, gb’57, directly at
“One Nation Under Contract: The Outsourcing of American
Power and the Future of Foreign Policy” by Allison Stanger
(Yale University Press) is our July selection.
“A superb work on government outsourcing and contracting
for those who want to get past the myths, and truly
understand this hot topic. ‘One Nation Under Contract’ should
be required reading for all those leaders involved in fixing this
process in order to get a clear sense and scope of this critical
issue.” — General Anthony C. Zinni, USMC (Retired)
“As we debate how many more troops to dispatch to
Afghanistan, it might be a good time to also debate just how
far we’ve already gone in hiring private contractors to jobs that the State Department,
Pentagon and CIA once did on their own. A good place to start is with... ‘One Nation
Under Contract’. “ — Thomas Friedman, New York Times
Our Book Discussion Group addressing business, economics, and public policy issues will be
meeting at 8 am on Friday morning, July 9th. Optional à la carte breakfast service will be
available in the Crimson Pub starting at 7 am. As always, we will officially adjourn at 8:50
am for those with pressing commitments, although continued discussion is welcome with
those who can remain. Members and guests are welcome, and guests may charge their
ADVOCATES FOR HARVARD’S RESERVE OFFICERS’
TRAINING CORPS
The Advocates for Harvard ROTC are seeking your moral support as an Advocate member
to push for formal Harvard recognition of the ROTC programs now serving Harvard cadets
and midshipmen. Currently, the Advocates have over 2,300 members of whom most are US
military veterans, and all have a Harvard degree or a direct Harvard connection. In effect,
our objective is to promote real diversity at Harvard by being inclusive of those Harvard
students who believe in duty, honor and country, as well as courage, integrity and
commitment. At a minimum, we strive for a climate of tolerance and inclusion at Harvard
for those Harvard undergraduates who wish to serve our great country as commissioned
officers throughout the ROTC programs based at MIT.
Did you know that Harvard has more Medal of Honor recipients than any other university
in the world except for West Point and the Naval Academy? Join the Advocates, and you will
be sent a bio with pictures of the 17 Crimson warriors who merited the Medal of Honor for
valor beyond the call of duty in combat. Your membership in the Advocates can be as private
or public as you want, and will serve as the basis for the distribution of our annual newsletter,
as well as demonstrate the depth of support for our noble cause with the Harvard
administration, the Harvard Corporation, and the Board of Overseers. The Advocates for
Harvard ROTC have no dues and require only as much time as you care to give, from none
to whatever. To sign up, please contact fellow Harvard Club member, Captain Paul E. Mawn
USN (Ret.) at 1-978-443-9532 or at: corp@concordcg.com.
