Lockdown CyclesBy EssentialsMAG environmentcontributor ROB RENOUFBicycles are one of the mostenvironmentally friendly forms oftransport. During the current lockdown,reduced traffic and good weather haveseen many people getting out on theirbikes. This is a really positive development,with the one caveat that we need to ensurewe’re doing this in a way that’s safe foreveryone.Ride safely - always a good idea, butit’s particularly important to minimisedemands on the NHS at present. Thismeans not taking unnecessary risks andensuring our bikes are roadworthy beforeusing them.Be self-sufficient - taking enough food anddrink and having the tools to fix a punctureor do other minor repairs will help minimisecontact with other people.No group rides - only ride with othermembers of your household or ride alone.Keep your distance - when moving,separation needs to be greater than twometres. A recent study suggested thatwe should leave a four metre gap whenfollowing another walker, 10 metres fora runner and 20 metres for a cyclist!If you’re catching another cyclist, moveout early to pass safely and don’t moveback in until you’re well past them.Be aware of pedestrians - pavementsare often less than two metres wide,meaning pedestrians may have limitedopportunity to distance themselves fromcyclists. It’s therefore important for cycliststo give them space by moving further outinto the road (provided it’s safe to do so).Pedestrians may also move into the roadto distance themselves from others -hopefully they won’t do this withoutchecking it’s safe, but be alert to this risk.Remember COAP - this stands forconcentration, observation, anticipationand planning, and is equally applicable forall road users. Spotting pedestrians earlyallows time to check it's safe to move outand do so smoothly, rather than suddenlyswerving across the road. If we’re drivingwe should anticipate that cyclists may needto move further out into the road tomaintain social distancing and try to allowthem space for this.Be polite - the majority of motorists behaveconsiderately towards cyclists. When adriver waits behind until it’s safe to pass,I always try to give them a wave to showmy appreciation.With a little consideration and awarenesspedestrians, cyclists and drivers can allshare our highways safely.
