From the Publisher
I am very happy to publish Game Day Magazine for the youth athletes and
families in Coweta County. Game Day is a community based publication
that focuses on the youth athletes in our county, from our recreational
leagues, middle school programs, as well as all six local high schools.
I have been involved in youth sports since the age of five. My experience in
sports are as a player, a parent, recreational coach, travel team coach, high
school coach as well as running youth sports programs for a non-for profit for
over 15 years. Growing up in Western New York, I played many organized
team sports such as baseball, soccer, golf, skiing, football, and lacrosse. I
have coached high school lacrosse as well as youth soccer, basketball,
baseball, and football.
I live in Newnan and have three boys Jay, Brian, and Owen. The boys stayed busy throughout the
year playing year round lacrosse.
We have some very skilled and talented youth athletes here in Coweta County and I am very excited to
highlight many of them throughout the year.
Game Day Magazine is a local publication relying solely on sponsorships and advertising for
publication costs. Game Day is available free of charge each month at numerous locations
throughout the county.

The Importance of Good
Nutrition
for Young
Athletes!
By Bryon Blandlin
40097522
Millions of youth today participate
in some type of sporting event.
Whether it is football, swimming,
soccer, dance, ice hockey or
any other sport, very often
the importance of nutrition is
overlooked by both coaches and
parents. Good nutrition along
with adequate hydration and
proper vitamins and minerals
are essential for maximum
athletic performance. If these
are overlooked, the result can be
under performance or even more
critical is the increase in injury
and risk of dehydration. Sports
nutritionists stress the connection
between how young athletes play
and what they eat. By building
healthy eating habits, athletes
will be able to not only play to the
best of their ability, but also carry
over healthy eating habits later in
life. Young athletes are often told
that proper nutrition is like fueling
your car. In order to keep the
engine running you need to give
it gas. You wouldn’t add useless
or harmful ingredients to the gas
or your car wouldn’t run. When
sugary, fatty and processed
foods are added to your body,
your engines will simply not
run at their capacity. Parents
who are looking to help their
young athletes to improve their
performance should follow these
great tips.
1. Make sure you child eats a healthy
breakfast packed with eggs, cheese,
lean meats and whole grains. Whole
fruits are also a good choice. Stay
away from sugary cereals, pop tarts,
donuts, muffins, etc that provide no
nutritional value.
2. Increase your child’s water intake.
Proper hydration is essential for
athletic performance. Stay away
from sugary drinks including fruit
drinks, sugary sports drinks, soft
drinks, etc.
3. Eliminate Processed Foods. This
includes your stops at fast food
restaurants. Prepare fresh meals
that focus on whole foods including
fruits and vegetables.
4. Eliminate unhealthy snacks. Stop
serving chips, candy, cupcakes
and other sugary, processed snack
foods. Replace them with cut up
fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds,
yogurt or other healthy snacks.
5. Don’t buy foods your young athlete
shouldn’t eat. Bringing junk into
the home is a sure way to mess
up an athletic healthy eating plan.
Leave the junk on the shelf at the
supermarket.
Mason
Hillegas
No excuses needed...
In sports, athletes are always looking for a
competitive advantage over their opponent.
What if there was an athlete that used his
perceived weakness as an advantage against
you? That would be 9th grade wrestler Mason
Hillegas, who is a 106lb amputee wrestler
at Newnan High School. Mason loves to
prove people wrong by using his amputee to
his advantage. Mason said, “My opponent
are always hesitant at first and this is my
opportunity to get a quick start and take
control of the match.” Mason also added, “My
opponents usually doubt my abilities because
I am only using one hand.” He surprises
them every time. Mason was not born an
amputee, but since the age of 4, he has had
to overcome over 17 surgeries and 2 skin
grafts to make him the young man he is today.
As per his mother, Ashlee Hillegas, “From
an early age, Mason has always been very
outgoing and active.” Mason is very thankful
for the support from his mom and dad, who
allow him to sign up and participate in sports.
In addition to wrestling, Mason also plays
football, does karate, and runs track. All
while still, academically maintaining an A/B
average. At his last checkup, the doctor
informed Mason that he would need additional
surgeries. Mason has learned to accept the
obstacles and hardships as he gets older.
Mason did have one request to the doctor if
there were to be more surgeries, “Can this wait till
after wrestling season?” His mom was not surprised
by his response. “Mason has always had a “Let’s do
this” attitude.”
Mason’s coach at Newnan High School, Eric
Shea, loves his spirited, fiery competitiveness, and
dedication as a member of the wrestling team. Shea,
Head Wrestling Coach added, “Mason is one of the
most competitive guys we have and has an extreme
desire to win. He is very skilled and does not use his
disability as an excuse. He works hard to be the best
he can be, take pride in the success and contributes
to the team.”
Mason maintains a positive attitude regardless of
how he is feeling. “I know that there can be pain
sometimes, but if I push through the pain and hard
times, I know I can achieve my dreams and goals.”
Mason indicated that things have never been easy for
him playing sports growing up. “Holding the football
as a running back on the 9th grade football team was
difficult, but I knew that my teammates depended
on me and that I needed to come through for them.”
Mason says he was pulled towards wrestling, which
he admits he is better at, but loves football more
because it was “different” and “something new.” He
said he has been told his whole life, “You can’t do
that.” This, at times, would make him doubt his
abilities, but he quickly learned that he was able to
overcome any doubts that he may have had.
Mason looks up to and has a great deal of respect
for NFL player, Shaquem Griffin. Griffin too had his
hand amputated at the age of four. This didn’t stop
him from playing football. Griffin was selected 141st
overall in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft by
the Seahawks, where his twin brother Shaquill plays
cornerback.
Mason’s parents have always supported him in
all his sports. “My parents have always given me
everything I need to play sports; I don’t know what I
would do without them. I can always hear my mom
from the stands cheering me on during a wrestling
match, which feels amazing to have her in my
corner.”
When talking about his teammates, Mason gives
them credit for always supporting him. Mason loves
to help others, and contribute to his team in any way
possible. Even during team drills and workouts, he
will find a way to do the exact drill required of his
teammates even though he only has one hand. This
includes resting the weight bar on his single hand
while others lift with two hands.
Don’t underestimate your opponent, you don’t know
their story, but when the match starts you will know
their will to win.

with other top runners.
Lindy graduated from the Air Force
Academy in 2017 where she ran
cross country and track. Her coach,
Bill Thorn who ran his 50th race
as a member of The United States
Air Force, said “She was the DNA
of the program at USAFA.” At the
Air Force Academy, she led her
cross-country team to the firstever
appearance by a military
academy at the NCAA National
Championships in 2016, all while
balancing engineering courses and
military training.
Her mom Lisa Long, quotes “She
is an Overcomer and a Fighter.
I know I am her mom but she is
inspirational to me.” In 2017, she
received the highest award given
in Athletics for females. Everyone
thinks highly of Lindy, she is a true
fighter for what she wants. Lindy
always keeps her faith in Christ
Jesus, and believes that she can
do all things through Him. Such as,
in her senior year, she completed
12 laps with a dislocated shoulder,
yet she didn’t stop. She persevered
through her pain to finish the race.
Lindy’s mom also quotes “16 years
ago my 14 year old son had a
number for The Peachtree Road
Race. Lindy being a runner and 6
years old cried to use her brother’s
number. She ran the race and never
stopped.”
After graduation Jones was
stationed at McChord Air
Force Base outside of Tacoma,
Washington. She’d planned to
take a break from the sport but in
her off times, she found herself
running again. One of Lindy’s
biggest supporters and biggest fan
was her father, Dr. James Long.
He always supported her running.
Every Sunday after church, her
father drove her to the state crosscountry
course. During their drive,
they would discuss how to handle
By: Ansley Reed
rivalries and pressure. “He would say,
you don’t need to compare yourself
to anybody.” At this time he became
seriously ill with a blood infection.
“Part of me wanted to quit running,”
she said. “But I knew it could give
me purpose and he wanted me to
continue pursuing goals.”
Today, 2nd Lieutenant Lindy Long
Jones is training as part of the Air
Force World Class Athlete Program
(WCAP) in which active-duty service
members train full-time. They aim to
make an Olympic team and along the
way, inspire recruits to sign up and
those already enlisted to aim higher
with their athletic pursuits for the Air
Force.
Lindy did not plan to compete at the
marathon distance as first. Her plan
was to run the 10,000 event. After a
running a time of 33:44 at the 2017
Stanford Invitational, she earned her
entry to the elite group. Soon though,
the distances started getting longer
for Lindy as she trained. This was her
way of dealing with the worry of Dr.
Long’s illness.
As she prepared for Chicago,
Lindy trained about 85 miles per
week, lower than that of many elite
marathoners. She would do harder
workouts Tuesday and Friday.
On Sundays, her long run usually
combined harder efforts. Now living
and training in Colorado Springs, CO,
she was training at altitude of close
to 7,000 feet. “Those long runs were,
like, 10 times harder than the race,”
said Lindy.
With that approach, Lindy progressed
despite the stress of her father’s
sickness. She executed her debut
marathon with military precision,
running a 2:36:59, one second under
the Olympic “A” standard.
As the Chicago Marathon neared, Dr.
Long’s condition worsened. More than
once, doctors told the family to say
goodbye. That spring, they amputated
his leg to contain his infection. At that
time they were not sure he would
survive surgery. Lindy believes that
he did, thanks in part to his lifelong
dedication to running and fitness.
Despite his illness, Dr. Long was
determined to travel to Chicago for
the marathon. Lindy’s mother, Lisa,
made sweatshirts with Lindy’s photo
on the front in her Air Force singlet.
The family stood at the first mile and
again not far from the finish; James
leaned on the railing to balance on
one leg, cheering as Jones flew by.
Her parents’ and husbands’ support
helped make it “one of the happiest,
best days of my life,” Lindy said.
Dr. Long survived to see the
marathon, though it was the last day
they would spend together.
The weeks following came with
more struggles. Her father passed
away in November and in January,
her husband Tyler was deployed
overseas.
Training for the Trials has offered
Lindy focus and purpose during these
difficult times. Lindy’s Olympic dream
is within reach. She will continue to
train to reach this goal for herself and
for her father.

PAST
Name: Braily Guthrie Alford
High School: Newnan HS
Sport: Cheerleading
CCP: Where did you grow up?
ALFORD: I was born and raised in
Newnan and I attended Newnan High
School from 2008-2012. Go Cougars!
CCP: Which sports did you play in
high school?
ALFORD: I was a cheerleader all
throughout High School.
CCP: How did you do academically
in high school?
ALFORD: I think I did pretty well
academically in HS. My grades were
very important to me so I worked
VERY hard to achieve As and Bs. I
graduated with a 3.9 GPA.
CCP: Did you always want to go to
LaGrange College?
ALFORD: LaGrange College was
the only college I wanted to go to!
I didn’t even apply anywhere else.
My older sister went there and I
remember going to visit her at college
when I was younger and loved the
small town feel to LaGrange and the
campus was so beautiful sitting up
on a hill. I’m also a “home body” and
wanted to stay close to home.
CCP: Was there any recruiting
process? Or how you come to cheer
there?
ALFORD: I had met the
cheerleading coach for LaGrange
College at a cheer clinic that they
came and did at NHS my senior year.
She told me about tryouts and gave
me her number. We stayed in touch,
and I went to tryouts when I found
out when they were (I even missed
part of senior prom to tryout). I loved
cheering in HS so I really wanted
to keep doing it in college if it was
possible.
CCP: Did you get any scholarships
to cheer?
ALFORD: Unfortunately, LaGrange
College doesn’t give athletic
scholarship due to it being a private,
Christion college. Luckily I did receive
several academic scholarships and a
couple of Art scholarships (which was
my major) to help cover the cost of
tuition.
CCP: What kind of preparation did
you do to handle the financial burden
of college?
ALFORD: I knew that I would need
to take out student loans to help pay
for tuition but it was worth it to me
to be able to attend the college I’d
always dreamed of going to. I made
sure that I kept my grades up so I
could also get the HOPE scholarship
along with my other scholarships
and grants. I also had a lot of help
from my parents, thank goodness, to
help pay the remainder that wasn’t
covered.
CCP: What was your favorite part
about cheering at Lagrange College?
ALFORD: My favorite part about
cheering at LaGrange College was
how “relaxed” it was. We didn’t
compete, like I did in HS, so there
wasn’t any high stress every time
we practiced. We still worked hard
and walked a chalk line because our
coach wanted us to be the best we
could be, but going to practice was
fun! I’ve met some of my lifelong
friends from cheering at LaGrange
College.
CCP: What have you accomplished
since graduating from Lagrange
College?
ALFORD: Since graduating from LC
in 2016, I went back to school and
got my Masters Degree in Teaching
(MAT). I met my husband at LC
and we got married in May 2018.
I am now starting my third year as
the head cheerleading coach for
LaGrange College.
CCP: What do you hope for your
(future) kids as student athletes?
ALFORD: My hope for my future kids
as a student athlete would be to not
listen to the ones that tell you it’s not
possible. If that’s your passion, go for
it! Prove those people wrong. This
could be about their academics or
athletics.
CCP: What advice would you
impart on student athletes in Coweta
County?
ALFORD: My advice for the student
athletes in Coweta County would
be to enjoy the sport you love for as
long as you can! Take it seriously,
but don’t get so caught up in the
competition of it that you don’t have
fun doing it anymore. There will
come a day when you can’t be on
that field or court anymore, so make
the most of the time you have and
enjoy it while you can. Don’t take
opportunities for granted.
