Blue Devils March 2020
From the Principal’s Desk:
Thank you everyone who has taken
the time and effort to help with our
Morley/CherryDale Fundraiser. This is
our main PTA fundraiser of the
year. As you know our PTA does a
tremendous amount for our students.
Spring testing is right around
the corner, more details to
come. Eighth graders will be taking
the PSAT the Tuesday after Spring
Break. If you have any questions or
concerns please do not hesitate to
contact me.

Superintendent’s Message
Dean of Students:
Across the country, schools are celebrating
March is Reading Month. At Richmond Middle
School, we are Wild about Books and will have
a jungle themed media center to prove it. The
focus is on encouraging children to love reading
and engage in reading at home. Research
shows that one of the most important steps parents
can take to support children’s literacy skill
development is to have a literacy-rich home environment.
Read for pleasure, talk with your
children about how much you love reading,
have books available, make reading a fun and
special activity at home, not just for them, but
also for you.
March also brings Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences.
While we hope you have an open ongoing
conversation with your student’s teachers,
this is a perfect way to have a dedicated
time to check-in and see how they are doing.
During conferences, our PTA will be running a
book fair. Another great opportunity to encourage
reading. We hope to see you there. Remember
if you cannot make it, you can still
check in with teachers via email.

they sampled a food specific to Costa Rica. Our next meeting is March
31st. Students in the club will each be bringing in a Spanish dish to share, along with
tie dying shirts for our Cinco De Mayo celebration in May.
WEB: Web has continued to work on building relationships with the 4th and 5th
grade students. The relationship building has extended beyond our lessons. The
WEB Leaders were high fiving their 4th and 5th grade buddies. Also, the WEB Leaders
along with the 4th and 5th graders were able to make blankets to donate to the Animal
Shelter.
Green School: Way to Go Richmond Middle School!!! Mrs. McLeod and Mrs.
Clausen submitted the Green School Application and are awaiting to hear how green
our Middle School is. They couldn't have done it without the support of the students,
staff and parents. Mrs. McLeod and Mrs. Clausen would like to thank everyone for the
continuous donations of unwanted clothing items to the Planet Aid Bin, along with supporting
conserving energy here within the building. In addition a big thank you to the
NJHS and Mrs. Bartels for helping create our annual Green Team that handles all the
recycling on Fridays. Furthermore, a shout out to Mrs. Campau and Mrs. Buchanan,
along with the amazing media team that put together a wonder commercial to promote
our greeness.
The 8 th graders and I have been working on planning for high school!
We met during their Social Studies classes to talk about high school
graduation requirements, dual enrollment options, Career and Technical
Education (CTE) options available to them and how those things
can fit into their goals for the future. We created a personalized four
year plan for their high school years to map out the classes they’d like
to take while they are in high school while meeting the graduation
the requirements as well. All of this planning will hopefully lead to a
successful four years in high school!
We are excited for our 8 th graders as they prepare to move on to the
high school. Please let me know if there are any questions about high
school planning!

Dear Parents and Community Members,
On February 5, 2020 the first series of the Bonds were sold. When the Bond application was
originally submitted to Treasury for review/approval last June, the True Interest Cost (TIC) was
estimated to be 2.85%. The actual pricing of the TIC was 2.55%. This is a TIC positive variance of
0.30%, or $1,863,722 interest savings to the tax payers over the life of the bonds.
Even more exciting, one of the many reasons why the Board of Education chose Raymond James
as the underwriters for the bonds is because local investors would have the opportunity to purchase
Richmond school bonds. While the majority of the bonds were purchased by the corporate
sector, $750,000 in bonds were purchased by local investors in the tri-county area, with
$500,000 purchased in Macomb County alone.
On February 24, 2020 the Board of Education approved three contracts for the athletic field renovations,
which will begin the week after Memorial Day. $812,890 was awarded to Midwest
Landscaping Group, Inc. for the field prep and turf installations, $34,760 was awarded to Chain
Link Fence and Gates for fencing replacement, and $17,668 was awarded to Wade’s Electrical
Contracting, Inc. for electrical work.
The District is in the final phase of the Design and Development stage of the additions and renovations
that will take place at Will L. Lee Elementary School. The additions are scheduled to
begin this fall, with a majority of the interior renovations to occur during the summer of 2021.
Below you will find renderings of the elementary additions.
The Design and Development stage for the middle school and high school renovations and additions
will begin at the end of the month. For more information regarding the Bond Update,
please visit the District website at www.richmond.k12.mi.us.
Sincerely,
Brian J. Walmsley, Ed.S.
