A fullimmersion into the authenticatmosphere left the guests ofthe ‘Pearl of Asia’ with colourfulemotions. Here are some of thehighlights of their tripWhen did you visit Uzbekistan? Whichcities impressed you most?I visited Uzbekistan for both work andleisure in January 2017. I spent a weekin Tashkent but this was preceded bya trip around the country, spendingtwo days in Bukhara, two days inSamarkand, and two days in Khiva.The entire trip was brilliant but ourfavourite, if I had to choose, thatwould probably be Samarkand.Can you share the highlights of yourstay in Samarkand?We spent our days in Samarkandwandering around the winding streets,taking it all in. The Registan at sunsetwas absolutely breath-taking and ourvisit to the Shah-i-Zinda stands out asa highlight of our entire trip.What were your gastronomicimpressions? What did you taste?Being vegetarian, some meals were achallenge in Uzbekistan! My favouritemeals were made up of the fresh fruitsand vegetables, cheeses and yogurts,and nuts which we picked up fromthe markets. The Korean-influencedrange of salads were delicious and,coupled with fresh cheese and bread,this made up many of my meals. I wasglad to get to try the famous nationaldish of pilaf when in Tashkent – anUzbek friend was able to ask for avegetarian version to be made for me.It was delicious!What was the most exciting experienceduring your stay in Uzbekistan?We travelled entirely by train andenjoyed several night trains duringour trip. This was a really enjoyableway to see the country and made forsome amazing memories. Rollinginto Bukhara on a foggy, cold, Januarymorning and getting off the Soviet-eranight train with no idea what to expectwas a feeling I will never forget! Wewere filled with anticipation as wegot into the back of a car to drive intotown. Uzbek music was playing loudlyon the speakers and the sky began tolighten as we came into the old town.We were absolutely blown away by thebeauty of the old town and set out toexplore right away.
