Bathroom Safety
Unintentional falls send
nearly 2,000 of every age
Canadians to hospital every
day, of which over 400 each
day require hospital admissions:
• Falls and slips are a
leading cause of injury for
all ages,
• Falls are the most common
way to suffer a brain injury,
• Falls are responsible for
over 90% of hip fractures.
• Fall and slip victims on
average miss 11 days of
work (14 if hospitalized).
• Most falls are
preventable.
“We all think of cancer and
heart disease and strokes
as being the big problem
– they are serious and you
do sometimes die of them
– but you also find that falls
are extremely common and
although they don’t usually
kill you straight away, sometimes
they do” - Geoff Fernie,
Toronto Rehabilitation
Institute.
Older adults, people with medical
problems and those on certain
medications are at a higher risk of
falling, slipping and tripping in their
home resulting in broken bones or more serious injuries. The
bathroom, wet and slippery, is a place where falls are more likely
to happen. Making changes in your bathroom helps lower your
risk of falling, keeping you safe and comfortable at home.
Falls are not the only risk posed in your bathroom, hot water
scalds are also common. Even just the simple task of turning the
water on and off can be challenging if you are losing strength in
your hands due to arthritis. Knee and/or hip issues can make the
every day, simple job of using the toilet challenging.
And these risks are not age-specific. You probably know just
how slippery a tub can be and how easy it is for kids to fall or slide
below the surface of the water, or scald themselves in hot water.
Our team at Alberta Indoor Comfort is specially trained in these
safety issues and has many easyto-implement
solutions ready
for you and your family-specific
desires. Everything from non-slip
surfaces to anti-scald valves to
grab bars and barrier-free showers
– we have the knowledge to
support your specific needs.
