House for Living, Home for Life,
Comfortably now and Into Old Age
Carla Berezowski
Leader / Owner
The family home is more than
just a place to live. For many
people, their home is the source
and location of some of their best
memories. Parents remember
the places that their kids took
their first steps or had their
picture awkwardly taken with their first date.
Kids remember the games of hide-and-seek
they used to play together in the backyard or
the sense of accomplishment and fear they
had pulling out of the driveway to head off to
University or College for their first year away.
It also is the safe place. The family home is a
place filled with nostalgic images of laughter,
tears, meals, games, sickness, and coming
together in the face of adversity.
With all that the family home means, it’s no
wonder that majority of us strive to own one,
and that nearly 90 percent of seniors don’t
want to ever leave their homes. Even though
the physical stresses of maintaining and
maneuvering through a family home increase
with age, most people who reach fifty say they
want to live in their current homes throughout
their retirement and beyond. Rather than being
placed in a retirement facility, most people
want to age in place in their family home, in the
same community that they have known and
felt safe in for years. This is especially true
considering what 2020 brought us combined
with the rising cost of living in shared facilities.
Lead by Carla Berezowski, our team at Alberta
Indoor Comfort know how important the home
is to our clients. We work with all sorts of
clients to make their homes safer and more
comfortable. Our older clients hold a very
special place in our hearts; they remind
us of our parents. There are specific
concerns that come along with aging and
living alone that most companies are not
aware of, or equipped to handle. Many
people don’t think of their homes as
dangerous places, yet as they age, things
from poorly lit stairs to lose floorboards,
uneven surfaces, and scalding water can
significantly hurt if not taken care of.
Carla is Canada’s authority and Certified
Aging in Place Specialist and the only
licensed CAPS trainer in the region. Our
team benefits from Carla’s expertise.
We instruct all members of our team in
how to work with seniors and vulnerable
to provide them with unique solutions
to enhance their safety, security and
comfort, broadly the Peace of Mind; after
all, everyone has their unique perspective
on risk tolerance and comfort. There is no
other company like us in the Calgary and
the surrounding broader region.
Not only does Alberta Indoor Comfort
focus on seniors, but we also help families
of all ages create a safe and comfortable
space. Our company supports families
of all ages because each of our staff
is someone with kids or aging parents;
many of us are the sandwich generation,
raising kids and supporting our deserving
parents.We understand the specific
challenges everyone faces and work with
every client to develop solutions that are
most appropriate to their unique lives. To
clarify, Alberta Indoor Comfort is not a
home care provider, it is a home services
provider that looks after your home;
having said that, Alberta Indoor Comfort
works closely with leading home care
providers and occupational therapists.
we earned our clients’ trust and
loyalty, supporting them with heating,
cooling and air quality services. Sears
departure provided us the opportunity
to combine our other home services to
become Alberta Indoor Comfort, which
includes renovations needed to remain
independent, in-home technology,
plumbing and electrical services.
Understanding that today’s world is more
demanding and clients have less time
to attend to their home, we continue to
expand our trusted services for clients
to rely on us for their total home needs
& desires from roofs and gutters to
appliance repair to basement flooring and
beyond, a true single stop home services
provider.
Our clients’ time is precious. Why waste it
screening new contractors and hoping all
works out well for their families?
Thankyou for your continued loyalty and
confidence in our team.
Indoor Air Quality Solutions
Sick Building Syndrome and Chronic Illness?
Symptoms of poor air:
• Sore or irritated eyes
• Feeling of suffocation
• Dry sore throat, Coughing
• Fatigue, Headaches
• Agitation, Anxiety
• Dizziness, Sleeplessness
• Psoriasis, Palpitations
• Nausea, Numbness
• Cold sensitivity
• Backaches
Growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air inside
our homes can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even
the largest and most industrialized cities. We spend 90% of time
indoors, with elderly, chronically ill and young being at a potentially
higher risk. According to US EPA, risks to health may be greater due
to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors. TV’s 60Minutes
showed how Sick Building Syndrome badly affected EPA’s offices.
Science has shown that poor IAQ leads to weight gain.
“A dirty filter will slow
down air flow and make
the system work harder
Radon Safety
How Concerning is Radon Gas?
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, Radon gas
exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
100 Bq/m3 of chronic radon exposure is a significant increased
lung cancer risk. A 2017 study found that radon levels are high
in one of eight homes in the Calgary area.”
Air Duct Systems
Maintenance, Repair, and Cleaning
Are your ducts leaky? Most duct systems
leak 30-40% of the air produced by your
furnace or air handler (wasted energy).
That’s heat and A/C that never make it to
the rooms in your home where they are
needed. Dust also makes your system inefficient
and perhaps if you’re experiencing
recurring colds you may want to disinfect
your ducts. Many times, duct sealing combined
with an extra register will make an
uncomfortable room feel great. Our service
technicians are experts in making your
home comfortable.
Bathroom Safety
Unintentional falls send
nearly 2,000 of every age
Canadians to hospital every
day, of which over 400 each
day require hospital admissions:
• Falls and slips are a
leading cause of injury for
all ages,
• Falls are the most common
way to suffer a brain injury,
• Falls are responsible for
over 90% of hip fractures.
• Fall and slip victims on
average miss 11 days of
work (14 if hospitalized).
• Most falls are
preventable.
“We all think of cancer and
heart disease and strokes
as being the big problem
– they are serious and you
do sometimes die of them
– but you also find that falls
are extremely common and
although they don’t usually
kill you straight away, sometimes
they do” - Geoff Fernie,
Toronto Rehabilitation
Institute.
Older adults, people with medical
problems and those on certain
medications are at a higher risk of
falling, slipping and tripping in their
home resulting in broken bones or more serious injuries. The
bathroom, wet and slippery, is a place where falls are more likely
to happen. Making changes in your bathroom helps lower your
risk of falling, keeping you safe and comfortable at home.
Falls are not the only risk posed in your bathroom, hot water
scalds are also common. Even just the simple task of turning the
water on and off can be challenging if you are losing strength in
your hands due to arthritis. Knee and/or hip issues can make the
every day, simple job of using the toilet challenging.
And these risks are not age-specific. You probably know just
how slippery a tub can be and how easy it is for kids to fall or slide
below the surface of the water, or scald themselves in hot water.
Our team at Alberta Indoor Comfort is specially trained in these
safety issues and has many easyto-implement
solutions ready
for you and your family-specific
desires. Everything from non-slip
surfaces to anti-scald valves to
grab bars and barrier-free showers
– we have the knowledge to
support your specific needs.
Water Filters and Softeners
Good news: no one
makes pipes out of lead
anymore, and most municipalities
in our region
have no lead pipes in
their water system to
your property line; you
are responsible inside
your home and property.
The not-so good news:
only since 1990, the Canadian
National Plumbing
Code has restricted
the use of lead solder in
pipe joints; older homes
might still have lead
pipes, especially within
your property. Lead
in water is bad for you
even in trace amounts.
So are many other metals,
contaminants and
impurities.
If your hot water is not
at 60 o C, you may also
be breading bugs.
Depending on your
liking, there is also the
hard water thing, that
leads to nasty calcification.
Water in your home, treated by your municipally or
sourced from a well, often contains impurities such as
Water Heaters & Steam Showers
Correct Temperature?
The Occupational Safety
& Health Administration
(OSHA) recommends
water heaters be set to
at least 60 o C (140 o F)
to minimize the growth
of Legionella and other
microorganisms.
There is no denying that we all love hot water and that
we want it to flow hot until we are done. Many of us
grew up using the traditional hot water tank heaters
while others know tankless on-demand heaters well.
Careful ! Water that
is too hot is potentially
more dangerous, especially
for kids and seniors
as it take less than
two seconds to burn.
Not to mention, if set too
high, this can increase
your bill.
Yet, every house is
different. The further a
faucet is from the water
heater, the more heat
is lost, especially if your
home’s pipes are not
insulated, requiring you
to raise the temperature.
Traditional Tanked
On Demand Tankless
Both Solutions Are Great, yet Tankless is Better:
✔ Never Runs out of Hot Water, Even with Kids!
✔ Cost Savings from 30% Higher Efficiency
✔ Does Not Store and Reheat Water
✔ 10 Year Longer Life Expectancy
✔ Improved Home Safety and NO Floods
✔ Compact, Space Saving Design
✔ Great for Secondary Suites Water and Heat Needs.
Hard start mornings? Feel great with a Steam Shower.
Confused ? We will
help you with the best
solution for your family’s
desires and your home’s
unique constraints.
illness that left her with debilitating
out to be chronic carbon monoxide
Why Homeowners Should Ask For Proof Of Insurance
We get this insurance question a lot so thought this was a good time to comment on why you should
ask workers for proof of insurance. Asking the insurance question is very important. If a service worker
does not have insurance and causes damage on a homeowner’s property, the homeowner may be on
the hook to pay for it. The same is true if an uninsured worker is injured. Hired workers who do not carry
insurance tend to be less responsible than those who do, so asking about coverage is also a good way
to determine whether someone will be a reliable worker. It is always best to pay a little more for someone
who is insured than to take the risk of hiring an uninsured worker. Avoid taking a person’s word if
he or she says there is insurance. A verbal confirmation will do no good if the person is actually injured
while being uninsured. Our WCB # 3727275.
Homeowner’s maintenance checklist
Like a car, your home needs regular maintenance
and occasional tune-ups to stay in tip-top shape.
Fortunately, you can complete most of the following
tasks yourself by following this season-by-season
schedule of indoor and outdoor maintenance.
Regular home maintenance is essential to ensure
a safe and efficient home. It’s a good idea to set
aside some money in your budget each month for
home maintenance and repair. As a rule of thumb,
homeowners spend between 1% and 3% of their
home’s value on maintenance and repair each year.
Following this maintenance checklist on a regular
basis can help your home look its best, keep utility bills
down and prevent more costly repairs in the future.
SPRING HOME MAINTENANCE
In spring, focus on freshening up your home and protecting
your property against the season’s strong winds and rains.
Outdoor Tasks:
Clean gutters and downspouts. Learn how to maintain your
gutters.
Inspect roof and chimney for cracks and damage.
Touch up peeling or damaged paint.
Wash all windows, inside and out.
Install screens on windows and doors.
Clean outdoor furniture and air out cushions.
Service your lawn mower.
Fertilize your lawn.
Indoor Tasks:
Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when you set
clocks forward.
If your basement has a sump pump, test it by dumping a
large bucket of water into the basin of the sump pump.
This should activate the sump pump. If it does not switch
on or if it’s not pumping water, it may need to be serviced
by a professional. Also, check for and remove any debris
and make sure there are no leaks.
Wash and change seasonal bedding.
Dust blinds and vacuum curtains throughout your house.
Clean kitchen and bathroom cabinets and throw away
outdated food, medicine and cosmetics.
Inspect attic fan to make sure there are no animal nests
and test properly
Have air conditioner outside professionally inspected
Test whole home generator for proper function
Test panel circuit breakers
SUMMER HOME MAINTENANCE
In summer, complete the following projects to keep your
yard lush and your home cool.
Outdoor Tasks:
Prune trees and shrubs.
Remove lint from dryer exhaust vent with a long,
flexible brush.
Uncover central air conditioner.
Indoor Tasks:
Change or clean heating, ventilating and air
conditioning filters. Consult manufacturer instructions
for your furnace to determine whether you need to
change filters more frequently. Learn more about
choosing a filter. Get information on cleaning or
replacing your HVAC filters.
Clean kitchen appliances inside and out, including
refrigerator coils.
Maintain clean drains by adding a half-cup of baking
soda followed by a half-cup of white vinegar. After 10
minutes, flush with boiling water.
Drain or flush water heater.
Test all homes GFCI receptacles
Change any water filters for water quality
FALL HOME MAINTENANCE
In fall, prepare your home and yard for cooler temperatures,
falling leaves and more hours spent indoors.
Outdoor Tasks:
Clean gutters and downspouts. Make sure all drainage
areas are unblocked by leaves and debris. Consider
installing gutter guards to make the job a lot easier.
Inspect your roof, or hire a licensed professional to
examine your roof for wear and tear. If the shingles are
curling, buckling or crackling, replace them. If you have
a lot of damage, it’s time to replace the entire roof.
Also, check the flashing around skylights, pipes and
chimneys. If you have any leaks or gaps, heavy snow
and ice will find its way in.
Run generator and thru a test cycle.
Check basement and crawl spaces for any cracks and
moisture that needs to be sealed
Remove hoses from spigots and drain and store
indoors, coiled and flat.
Store outdoor furniture and cushions.
Test all outside floodlights and motion sensors.
Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around
windows, doors, railings and decks. Use caulk to fill the
holes or completely replace the wood.
To prevent exterior water pipes from bursting when
the weather gets below freezing, turn off the valves to
the exterior hose bibs. Run the water until the pipes
are empty. Make sure all the water is drained from the
pipes, if not; the water can freeze up and damage the
pipes.
Lower humidity and cooler (not yet cold) temperatures
make fall a good time to paint the exterior of your
home.
Indoor Tasks:
Check grout and silicone in bathtubs and showers and
seal if needed.
Have furnace professionally inspected.
Test sump pumps for proper operation (check battery backup).
Change the air filter for your furnace.
Inspect ducts and decide if duct cleaning is needed
before major allergies hit.
Check indicator lights on all homes surge protectors
Test all homes GFCI receptacles
Change any water filters for water quality
batteries and replace if necessary.
surrounding areas.
Refrigerator - Vacuum condenser coils to increase
energy efficiency.
WINTER HOME MAINTENANCE
In winter, enjoy energy-efficient warmth and the fruits of
your home-maintenance labors. Use this time of the year
to thoroughly clean and care for your home’s interior while
taking a few precautionary measures on the outside.
Outdoor Tasks:
Walk around your home’s exterior and check the crawl
space vents located at the foundation. Close any that
are open.
Protect your central air conditioning unit with a cover.
Clean and store garden tools.
Move snow shovels and snow blowers to a convenient
spot. Stock your ice melting compound to melt ice on
walkways.
Indoor Tasks:
Change or clean furnace filters. Consult manufacturer
instructions for your furnace to determine how
frequently the filters should be replaced.
Clean kitchen appliances inside and out, including
refrigerator coils.
Maintain clean drains by adding BioClean product.
Foundation - Check for moisture and cracks that are
expanding inside and outside.
Chimney - Clean out the chimney to remove buildup
of flammable substances. Have a professional look at
your chimney every year or every other year to prevent
a fire hazard during the winter months
Water Heater - Drain the water heater until it is clear of
sediment and refill with clean water. (This will extend
the life of your water heater.)
Heating and Cooling System - Change all filters.
(Depending on the type of filters you use, this may
need to be done as often as once a month.)
Get your furnace tuned up. If a heating and cooling
specialist hasn’t taken a look at your furnace in the last
year it’s time to give them a call.
Garbage Disposal - Flush with hot water and baking
soda.
parts; polish metal hardware.
tracks.
Flooring - Shampoo carpets and wax floors.
Caulking and Grout - Inspect caulking and grout around
tubs, showers, and sinks and reapply if necessary.
Fire Extinguishers - Check to see if they are fully
charged and recharge or replace if necessary.
