I would first like to thank everyone
who submitted their art to the magazine, as
they are the ones who have made my dream
a reality. This magazine is fully created by
teens and made for teens: giving voice to my
generation. As we work with this revamped
edition of Et Cetera for Volume 8, I want
you to enjoy this magazine as much as
possible, stopping to appreciate the massive
talent of those who submitted their work to
make this possible! The theme,
"QuaranTEEN," was one that is very topical
to today, while the world around us is on
pause during a global pandemic, and so are
our lives. This is a reflective moment we can
take to stop and look back on our lives thus
far; and create art to showcase that
reflection of the theme. I am looking forward
to hearing your thoughts and reactions to the
magazine, so feel free to shoot me a quick
email with any praise, questions, or
suggestions you may have! This magazine is
one created for everyone, and your input is
highly valued. Enjoy looking through the
magazine, and I hope you have an immersive
and enriching time as you explore what I and
so many other of my fellow creatives have
contributed during this time of quarantine.
Love, Chloe

FUTURE NOSTALGIA
FUTURE NOSTALGIA
These photos were inspired by the TV show Euphoria and Dua Lipa’s album
“Future Nostalgia”. We took those photos right before quarantine happened and
one of things I have found most difficult during quarantine is that I can’t hang out
with friends and take pictures so everytime I look at them I reminisce on how
much fun that photoshoot was. I think it also represents how colorful teenage
years can been, almost like a hallucination.

Soft Sounds
From Another
Planet
Album by Japanese Breakfast
On this month's Album Feature,
we turn to Alternative/Indie
studio album "Soft Sounds From
Another Planet," a released in
2017 by Japanese Breakfasts'
Michelle Zauner. According to a
review by Pitchfork.com, this
album was inspired by life on
earth in relation to the cosmos.
Unlike her debut album,
'Psychopomp,' exploring death
and sexuality, Soft Sounds From
Another Planet is melodic and
instrumental, meant to evoke an
atmospheric feeling of peace in
the universe. The album itself
deals with Zauner's personal
trials and life events, include the
loss of her mom to cancer and
her recent marriage to her
partner, Peter Bradley. The
album, featuring 12 tracks, is a
deep examination into life on
earth. "Diving Woman," the
opening track, according to
Pitchfork.com, "flirts with
domesticity as a way to
normalize her life." Lyrics
include "I want to be a woman of
regimen/A bride in her home
state/A diving woman of Jejudo.”
Zauner, who is from South
Korea, makes a reference to an
matriarchal island in South
Korea where women are
frequently the breadwinners of
the household. .
This connects to her very present
theme of duality across the tracks
in the album as well; in "The Body
Is a Blade," Zauner examines
duality and separating her
physical body from the trauma
she has experienced in her life.
In an interview with Out.com,
Zauner tells us that she created
the album with the intent of
creating "My own experiences
and communities that are largely
rooted with queer people,
women, non-binary people, all
different races.” The lyrics drive
the background instrumentals. In
the song "Planetary Ambience,"
Zauner tells NPR "I love
incorporating instrumental tracks
onto albums. I think it just is a
nice way to help a record breathe.
It's some sort of reversed
keyboard loop. The weird little
bleeps are sounds I made with an
OP-1. I wanted it to sound like
two satellites talking. They kind
of remind me of Wall-E."

my life outside,
my life inside,
by grace copps
i miss my life in the outside world,
where i had chance encounters with old friends on the street
chased after buses i narrowly missed
and did my homework in the park
on warm, sunny days
i miss hastily picking my outfit for school
then rushing through breakfast so i wouldn’t be late
and wandering around barnes and noble
until i found exactly the book i needed
i miss the dimming lights and roar of applause
after the curtain call for my school play
and seeing my article on the very front page
on newspaper distribution day
i miss making those memories every teen should
at school dances and basketball games
and i miss sitting with my friends in the cafeteria
cramming for next period’s test
i miss talking to friends until dawn
about everything and nothing at all
and i miss going to bed every night not knowing
what that next day would bring
my life inside is much different
it’s much more routine now
every morning i get up
go to my online classes
then do homework until sundown
i often look out my window to check up on the world outside
but all that i can see
is a blanket of silence over the city
so what i’ll do for now
is sit and wait patiently
until the day the “all-clear” is given
and i can roam the streets once more

friendship
is as crucial to life as water or air.
the bonds we form with others define ourselves
good friends help us to live and to grow
as we live and grow with them
like two seperate trees
with entangled roots
we bloom in the spring
change colors in the fall
lose our leaves in the winter
and lean on each other year round
growing together, in tandem
until one day,
after three hundred years,
we return to the earth.

ETC ZINE: How has being in quarantine/social
distancing affected you creatively?
MAYA: Quarantine has affected my creative
process greatly. I love taking pictures of my
friends, and it has been impossible to do so
with social distancing!
ETC ZINE: Where has your source of inspiration
come from?
MAYA: I’ve resorted to taking pictures of my
siblings and myself. I always find myself
behind the camera rather than in front of it,
so switching places has actually been quite
refreshing.
ETC ZINE: What is something you do daily that
keeps you going?
MAYA: Before quarantine, I considered myself
someone who didn’t really enjoy cooking. I liked
eating the food (duh) but I hated the dishes and
the mess. But thanks to recent events I have
found myself binge-watching the Bon Appetit
YouTube channel and cooking up a variety of
dishes with my mother, which has been a great
bonding experience!
ETC ZINE: What do you miss the most
about being able to go out and about?
MAYA: I really miss being able to leave
my house. I miss the long car rides I
would on take on weekdays to go pick up
my sister from school. I would always
blast music and roll down the windows
on the way there.
ETC ZINE: What did you take for granted
before this pandemic that you will
definitely appreciate once it is over?
MAYA: Something I took for granted is the
luxury of tomorrow. I’ve realized over
the course of quarantine that I really need
something to look forward to in order to
keep going. But this constant cycle of
never knowing when this will end and
having nothing to peak my excitement is
really killing me.
Photo from @lemonymaya on instagram
ETC Zine: What is the last movie you
watched?
MAYA: The last movie I watched was
Loving Vincent! I have wanted to see that
movie ever since it came out and I finally
got around to it. It’s definitely one of
the most impressive movies I’ve seen
considering each frame of the film was
painted by a different artist. It truly is
like watching a sad painting come to life,
which is oddly beautiful. It’s a work of
art. Go watch it.
ETC Zine: What song/artist/album has
been on repeat the past couple of weeks
for you?
MAYA: The song “As The World Caves
In” by Matt Maltese has been on repeat
for days! It’s one of those songs that
makes me feel almost every emotion
possible when I hear it and I love that
about it. Also I think the title is very
fitting for a time like this because
although it may feel like the world is
caving in (I definitely feel that way some
days) it is good to know that in the end
we’ll be alright.
ETC ZINE: Go to quarantine snack?
MAYA: My favorite quarantine snack? I
can’t really think of one... Actually
cereal. I’ve been eating a lot of cereal
for the past couple of weeks, it just
tastes good during all hours of the day,
you can’t blame me!

nowhere to go
daniella bragg
This piece, titled "Nowhere to Go", aligns with the
theme, "quarenteen", as it expresses the current state of
the world in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, along
with the inner isolation and worry many teenagers
have faced as a result. Following social distancing rules
is extremely important for the successful recovery of
this virus, and the swirling colors above the girl's head
represent this boundary between society and the self. It
is important to look after each other and ourselves, and
this art piece serves as a reminder that, even though we
are physically alone, we are connected through a battle
for the greater good.

daniella bragg
This piece, titled "Pink", was inspired by alternative
fashion and those who are confident in their own skin. In
daily life, many of us struggle with comparing ourselves to
others, feeling as if we can not be accepted or do not
deserve being appreciated by others. I wanted to create
this piece to show that, inside and out, we are all beautiful,
despite our flaws. We need to remember who we truly are,
not what others believe we are. So, the girl depicted in this
portrait represents confidence and beauty, no matter how
different she may look to each pair of eyes.
Scenes from an
Empty World
The world we live in now is so different from the one
we know. As everyone quarantines and stays in
isolation, the world is emptier, and silent, a shell
of what it used to be. The few people going about
their essential business are in a hurry, hesitant to
make eye contact or get too close to anyone else for
fear of catching an untreatable virus. This series of
images come from multiple different submissions we
recieved, that all had the same theme - of an empty
world.

Never
not kevin
not kevin (Cameron Smith) is releasing their track “Never” on
Thursday, April 23rd. It’s written about coming to terms with social
anxiety and trying to acknowledge an obsession with how people live
their life through technology.
Specifically, it explores the idea of how social media apps remind you of past posts.
i.e. when an archived post on instagram shows you a time where you were happy
and you wonder why you aren’t feeling like that now. The cover (accompanied
by a full photoshoot taken while in quarantine) acts as a response to
this, a FaceTime with Lucienne Nghiem @luxxienne exemplifying the
use of technology to further real relationships and explore creatively
rather than letting it distract you.
not kevin is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist, producer Cameron
Smith (22). He uses this solo-project to collaborate with artists in
various mediums and to explore production and songwriting,
explaining the variation in styles and influences between releases. His
interest in music spawned early with his father’s guitar, singing,
songwriting, and bodhran playing, his uncle’s indie music production
in New York, as well as his introduction and pursuit of a study in jazz
saxophone bringing him to Richmond, VA to attend college for music.
