32GVRC WEEKLY MEETINGS- NEW ARRANGEMENTSGryffe Valley Rotary Club continues tomeet weekly using ZOOM. Once a fortnightwe have a speaker and in between we havean informal Chat meeting. The speakermeetings have been successful and the“Chats” are very enjoyable.Having exhausted discussions on the joysof on-line shopping for groceries etc andgardening we now have a “theme” tostimulate the chat.The meetings start at 7.00pm with thespeaker commencing at 7.30pm. Thecommittees are meeting by ZOOM andtheir recommendations are considered atthe fortnightly speaker meetings which aretypically attended by 30 members.Potential new members are invited to jointhese meetings – please contact a memberor e-mail gryffevalleyrotary@gmail.com toarrange an invitation.MEMBERS DONATINGIn view of government restrictions, it is possible that none ofthe normal fund-raising events (the BBQ, Curry Night or BurnsSupper) between now and the year-end will be able to goahead. At the same time members are not spending moneyeach week on their meals and drinks at the weekly meetings.Many members have agreed to donate a share of their coststo the Club charity account!ROTARY YOUTH SERVICESFordbank Primary School, Johnstone - In response to therequest for assistance, Members have provided a collection ofequipment including tools (new and used), rhubarb crowns,raspberry canes and bags of manure, all of which have beendelivered to the school. Arrangements are in place to set upthe compost bin/wormery which was on the wish list andhas been offered by a Member when this becomes feasible.Members are encouraged to consider further contributionsif they have appropriatesurplus items.local community, local life .........GVRC 10K RUN 2020 -CANCELLEDWhilst the 2020 10K Run had to be cancelled,challenges continue:• Rotary needs to continue to raise funds tosupport charitable causes and support of AlzheimerScotland is even more important because many ofthe normal sources of the charity’s funding havedried up.• The challenge of the Gryffe Valley’s hilly 10Kcourse continues but many runners are following thisroute for their daily exercise.• If you run the 10K route regularly (keepingto government regulations) why not make a donationto Alzheimer Scotland?Congratulations to Mel Cushing and her friends(about 30 in all) who ran (or walked) the 10K courseindividually last weekend and donated a total of£555 to Alzheimer Scotland. Well done!Next year’s event is provisionally arranged for Sunday16th May 2021. Please save the date!The National Finalsof Rotary YouthCompetitions have beencancelled due to COVID.GVRC COMMUNITYSERVICEAt its meeting on 7th Maythe Club members agreedto make donations from thecharity account to each of twogroups supporting families andchildren who need help due tothe COVID crisis:• £500 to the InverclydeFoodbank in Greenock• £500 to the JohnstoneCoffee Company which isproviding 25+ meals eachday to needy children inJohnstone.
