lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tupelo High School was unable to hold a traditional graduation

ceremony. Instead, the school made arrangements to video each traditional segment of

the usual ceremony. Those segments were compiled into a one hour video by Premium Productions

which aired on Comcast channel 198 at the time of the original ceremony at 7 pm on

Friday, May 22, 2020. Each graduate was able to walk across a TPSD stage and receive a

diploma cover from a THS principal. Erin Matthews was selected to give the graduation

speech. A transcript follows:

Hello, soon-to-be graduates!

I am so honored

to be able to speak to

the people that I spent

the last 3 and 3 quarters

years with. I know that

we have all been waiting

for this moment for

a long time, and trust

me, staying at home for

this last quarter of our

senior year makes this

moment much sweeter. I

wish nothing more than

to hug you through the

screen.

In honor of this moment,

I invite you to take

a trip down memory

lane. Envision yourself

walking into H building,

and spending your freshman

year looking out of

the window at the upperclassmen

and thinking

they were grown

ups. I was utterly terrified

of the seniors, yet I

became friends with the

people I feared most.

We threw our first handful

of white powder at a

football game, and we

finally got over our fear

of online assignments

which little did we know

would come in handy.

We learned how to tackle

new experiences and

learn from others that

year.

Then, we transitioned

into sophomore year,

and moved a little bit

closer to the rail at football

games. I want you to

remember that first day

of sophomore year when

the campus seemed endless.

We were completely

lost, but we finally

had the room to venture

throughout different

buildings and meet new

people. We learned how

to connect with those

around us and explore

new things that year.

Then, junior year

rolled around. Classes

got harder, and life was

constantly in motion

as we began deciding

where our future

was headed. We

stressed the little

things and grew to

love the teachers

who gave us the

hardest work, but

hey, we found out

that Dr. Brandon

will always give

the best pep

talks and back

slaps. That year,

we learned hard times

make us better, and

the future comes fast

and without warning.

Then, there we

were, at Harrisburg,

driving in a line to the

high school with huge

smiles on our faces

even if senior project

was looming on the

horizon. TikTok dances

consumed our free time,

and, oh my gosh, we finally

touched the rail.

We learned and are still

learning the value of

4 family members in attendance. These

our friendships and memories

this year. My memories

with you guys are by far the

most precious thing I could

have ever been gifted. As

a class, we made an appearance

at the inaugural

parade, learned that “reading

is, in fact, fun,” became

state champs (go wave),

made many, many TikToks,

met Slim Jimmi and Swae

Lee, and loved each other

even when we had to do it

over zoom and FaceTime.

Let’s also discuss the elephant

in the room. The

global pandemic that hovers

over our generation.

We have faced loss and

disappointment, but we

have handled it with grace

and poise. I think we can

definitely say that we have

made history at THS.

I am most proud of us, the

class of 2020, for moving

forward with resilience and

hope for a better day. No,

we weren’t given the perfect

finale of a senior year,

but we were given so much

more. We were given time

apart, so that our time together

would mean so much

more.

As Theodore Roosevelt

said, “It is not the critic who

counts; not the man who

points out how the strong

man stumbles, or where

the doer of deeds could

have done them better. The

credit belongs to the man

who is actually in the arena,

whose face is marred by

dust and sweat and blood;

who strives valiantly; who

errs, who comes short again

and again, because there is

no effort without error and

shortcoming.”

We have fallen short and

dared to be great over these

four years, and we have

come out of this high school

with the beauty of a mature

and educated mind.

With the knowledge we

have been given, the world

is ours to learn from and

change. We have been given

the opportunity of a lifetime

to march out of hard

times and be someone to

respect.

So class of 2020, I ask

you the question Ronald

Reagan posed years ago,

“if not us, who? If not now,

when?” We, as a class,

have the ability to change

rainy days into endless sunshine,

and it is now our

time to step out into the

light that we have created.

So, make your own rules,

find out who you are, decide

who you are going to be,

make mistakes, pick yourself

back up, and change the

world.

In the words of Mrs.

Rowe, “you just gotta commit.”

We used to think everything

was guaranteed,

but now we have learned

to use every moment wisely

because it may not last.

Comfort is fleeting, and we

will always have to strive to

be who I know we can be.

We can, and we will shape

the future.

I would like to thank Principal

Dobbs for showing us

how important we are in

the eyes of our school, and

I also thank all of the teachers

for the goofy videos to

keep a smile on our faces

and the many years of genuine

interest in our lives.

This may not be the ending

we anticipated, but it

sure is the one that gives us

a greater appreciation for

those around us. I love you

guys so much, and I wish

you success in your future

endeavors, but more than

that I wish you happiness in

whatever path you choose

to take. Remember to thank

those who have shaped you,

hug people harder, and love

deeply.

In the wise words of the

great philosopher Post

Malone, “Look, we made

it.”

Seniors share their favorite memory of 2019-2020

Destiny Pimentel - Homecoming

Ginny Gray - I have loved going to every single one of Tupelo’s

football game in the past 4 years! Cheering on the wave

in the stands with my friends or filming on the sidelines I

will forever remember those Friday Night Lights!

Wanye Brown - Being able to reach finals with my favorite

cheer squad, and being able to be 4th in the nation.

Luke Losordo - An overtime

and last second victory

finals of the soccer state

championship tournament.

Carson Rousseau - My last

football Game

Hannah Bradford - Staying to

the end of football games

and cheering on the team regardless of the final outcome.

On our last home game, we were even able to go on the

football field and the cold weather did not stop us from

reminiscing on our great 4 years.

Taylor Chapman - The High School Swimming State Championship.

The boys this year were aiming to uphold their winning

streak and attain the thirteenth state championship in

a row. With a combined effort, the boys swept the competition

off their feet earning the thirteenth championship, and

the girls placed second. This team was an amazing thing to

be a part of, and I will forever remember this meet.

Lexie Freeman - My most memorable moment would be every

trip and memory I made with the volleyball team. I was able

to become close with both the players and coach who all

brought on many laughs, smiles, and helped me through a

lot of things. I met some of my best friends ever because

of the program.

Gracey Rutherford - I was so

lucky with the senior project

group I got. Summer Bryan,

Marcus Davis, and I all worked

really hard on our senior project

hosting a 5K Charity Run

for Regional Rehab that ended

up making close to $2,000.

Covid-19 pandemic. I keep thinking back to how my senior

year has been cut short and realizing that my “last day of

high school” was the Friday before spring break. It’s sad

to realize that this is how it ends, but it is definitely memorable!

team! All of my best friends in the

happiest place on Earth!

Morgan Robbins - Doing my last

show as a member of Synergy.

Show choir has been one of my

favorite things of my high school

career and to share the stage with all the girls I love, doing

the thing I love most is something I will never forget!

Lilly Bray - The relay races at the pep rallies

Carrol Trent Imbler - Winning the Community Bank Challenge

was the best way to end the 2019 football season! As soon

as I won, I ran back to the student section and we threw the

powder for the white out game!

Kyion White - the very first pep rally. It was so fun and I will

never forget all the smiles

and cool vibes. My favorite

part of the year was being

the “T” for TUPELO boys.

Maddie Stanzell - THS Soccer

Bryant Stubbs, Jr. - Becoming a basketball

manager and thinking about

doing it in college. Just get the vibe

of how it is and how everything is

supposed to operate. Getting to

meet new people and make new

bonds and when I can come back to

the games they’ll recognize me.

Seniors share their favorite

memory of the last 4 years

Massie Eckard - When I was on homecoming court. I was very

surprised to hear my name called on the intercom when the

principal announced the maids. I was so excited! I was so

blessed to have such a great class support me!

Nakia Cayson - Winning state for the first time in Tupelo High

School softball history in 2017

Alyssa Brohawn - Traveling to Orlando, FL for our Heart of

America Show Choir Competition. We were able to go to

Universal Studios for day and have lots of fun as a team,

then the next day we got to perform and watch other groups

from around the country perform

Eli Smart - I’ve been to a lot of events and I’ve performed

at various venues as a horn player, but I have to say that,

through it all, nothing topped being the

mellophone section leader for the first

ever year that the Tupelo High School

Band made State Finals. It was absolutely

ecstatic! I still remember jumping up and

down on the fences and screaming my

head off. Fortunately for my pride, I don’t

have a picture of that one.

Erin Matthews - Winning state for cheerleading in 2018! We

worked so hard and it finally was recognized!

Destiny Pimentel - Every football game.

Camille Campbell - In 10th grade I

joined welding & Skills USA. For

some unknown reason I decided

that we should be extra and

have our chapter display be an

arcade game with a monitor and

controller that controls a Power

Point which we would present to

the judges. We ended up taking

first place at the state competition

and we were able to go to

nationals in Louisville Kentucky.

It now rests in I building standing with all its glory down the

hall from the attendance office. Is was the most stress I had

ever faced in my life but every time I pass it I can’t help but

feel proud and touch it.

Anna Caryl Justice - Going to lunch every day first semester

of Junior year. From the first day of the semester to

the last, I would sit with the same

group everyday. Some days new

people would join us, but not often.

It consisted of me and my two

good guy friends Rhett and Matt.

We would always share lunch, We

would always goof off and have

the best time. Even though it was

only 20 something minutes a day,

they never failed to put a smile on

my face.

Hannah Bradford - Freshman year, my geometry class was

obsessed with the song “living on a prayer” and my teacher,

Mr. Frazier, who is normally very kind and chill got kind

of stern with us and told us to stop singing that song. He

continued with the lesson and he got toward the end of the

power point and said “alright guys we are halfway there”

to which every person in the class simultaneously followed

with “ohhh living on a prayer”. It was magical and I will

never forget it.
