Many never fully recovered,either physically or emotionally,from their experiences. As theseveterans pass, it is our duty andsolemn promise to welcome themhome to the place that our nationhas set aside to remember ourVietnam veterans.”Only the names of soldiers whodied in Vietnam are on the wall.To honor those who died fromrelated injuries and diseases incurredin the war, the VVMF beganin 1993 to list on a plaque atthe Vietnam War Memorial, thenames of those who died.The VVMF has honored morethan 4,700 veterans. For more information,go to www.vvmf.org/inmemory.The plaque that honors theseveterans was dedicated as a part ofthe Vietnam Veterans Memorialsite in 2004. It reads: In Memoryof the men and women who servedin the Vietnam War and later diedas a result of their service. Dentistshave been allowed to see "emergentand likely to become emergent"patients since last week. Many of ushave struggled to understand whatthat means exactly, but I think we aregetting closer to "the new normal".Many people I have talked to havenoticed a change in their sleep patternsin the past couple of months.Staying up later and getting up laterhas been the trend. Your body needssleep and really needs consistentquality sleep. If you are going tobed later and getting up at the sametime, meaning your total sleep timeis less, has this impacted the way youfeel the next day?There are many reasons for poorquality sleep. Everything from apoor mattress, poor pillow, sleep position,medical issues, diet, alcoholconsumption, work schedule, or anoisy bed partner can have an impacton the quality of sleep that weget. Although some people can noticesubtle changes in sleep quality,many others do not realize that someof the issues they have routinely canbe caused by poor sleep quality.Sleep plays a vital role in goodhealth and well-being throughoutour lives. The way you feel whileyou're awake depends in part onwhat happens while you're sleeping.Sleep helps your brain work properly.Studies show that a good night'ssleep improves learning. Studies alsoshow that sleep deficiency may causeyou to have trouble making decisions,solving problems, controllingyour emotions and behavior, andcoping with change.Sleep plays an important role inyour physical health. For example,sleep is involved in healing and repairof your heart and blood vessels.Ongoing sleep deficiency is linkedto an increased risk of heart disease,kidney disease, high blood pressure,diabetes, stroke, sexual dysfunction,ADHD, obesity and depression.Sleep issues can affect the young,the old, and everyone in between.The many changes that take place inour bodies as we age can increase therisk of sleep disorders.Sleep apnea is one of many sleepdisorders. It is a serious, potentiallylife-threatening sleep disorder thataffects at least 18 million Americans.It comes from the Greek meaning ofapnea which means "want of breath".People with sleep apnea have episodesin which they stop breathingfor 10 seconds or more during sleep.People with sleep apnea usually donot remember waking up during thenight. Some of the potential problemsmay include morning headaches,excessive daytime sleepiness,irritability and impaired mental oremotional functioning, excessivesnoring, choking/gasping duringsleep, insomnia, or awakening witha dry mouth or throat.Have you been told that yousnore? Do you often feel tired, fatigued,or sleepy during the daytime?Has anyone ever witnessed you stopbreathing while you are asleep, orhave you ever awoken with a gasp?Do you have high blood pressure,or are you on medication to controlhigh blood pressure? Is your bodymass index greater than 28? Are youa male with a neck circumferencegreater than 17 inches or a femalegreater 16 inches? (Note: anyone ofany size can have sleep apnea)If you answered yes to more thantwo of these questions, or if thereis anything else in this column thatmakes you believe you may notbe getting the quality of sleep youwould like, maybe your new normalshould be better sleep.
