Glaucoma
the sneak-thief of sight
Imagine an eye disease that causes
no symptoms, permits people
to have 20/20 vision, and has
nothing to do with whether you wear
eyeglasses or not
That’s glaucoma. Because it
causes a slow and imperceptible
loss of side vision, it’s often referred
to as the “sneak thief of sight.”
And sadly, what often brings
people with glaucoma to the eye
doctor is when they’ve lost 60%,
70%, and even 80% of their vision,
and figured the difficulty they’ve
been having is that they merely need
a new pair of glasses.
By then it’s too late.
Glaucoma eats away at the side
vision, little by little. And it doesn’t
cause any black or dark areas that
you would notice. No, instead, the
vision seems fine, you just have to
6 important
steps for using
Amsler Grid
for macular degeneration
simple, special diagnostic tool known as the
A Amsler grid can be of huge benefit to patients
with the dry form of AMD. And the best part is
that it is a free tool and can be used at home. Daily
use of the Amsler grid can help the patient detect
vision changes and then be able to follow-up with
his or her eye care provider.
People with the dry form of AMD usually
experience a gradual loss of vision and may
not recognize the loss of vision that they have
experienced. By using the Amsler grid on a daily
basis, patients can detect vision changes.
To see how easy it is to use the Amsler grid,
follow the instructions below using the Amsler
grid here:
1. If you wear glasses, be sure to have those on and
make sure the grid is 12 to 15 inches away from
your face in good reading light.
2. Cover one eye.
3. With your uncovered eye, look directly at the
center dot and stay focused on that.
4. Note in your side vision if there are any blurry,
wavy, dark or blank lines.
5. Repeat these steps with your other eye.
6. If you note any changes, make an appointment
with your eye care provider.
GLAUCOMA from page 1
turn your neck a little more to see a car approaching
from your left side, because your peripheral vision
is reduced. The effect can be like looking through a
keyhole and not being able to see the sides of the
room.
There are many types of “glaucoma,” but they all
share these two facts:
• There is damage to the optic nerve, which
is in the back of the eye and provides visual
information to the brain, and ...
• There is vision loss - first from the side, but
late in the disease, it can affect straight ahead
gaze as well.
How do you know if you have glaucoma? There is
only one way:
See your eye doctor - ophthalmologist (M.D.) or
optometrist (O.D.) - for regular eye exams. If you’re
over the age of 35, you should see your eye doctor no
less frequently than every two years, and some experts
recommend every year. This is because the likelihood
of developing glaucoma worsens with each year you
get older.
Potent Antioxidants
for Eye Health
By Paul Krawitz, M.D.
For your family members without macular
degeneration who want the most powerful
nutritional support for vision and eye
health, there is no better eye vitamin than VisiVite
Balanced Ocular Support.
Select Premium Ingredients provide Advanced
Nutritional Support for crisp, clear vision in Healthy
Eyes. Vegetarian Capsules. Especially beneficial for
people with family histories of eye problems.
VisiVite Balanced Ocular Support is designed to
maintain sharp vision and eye health for a lifetime.
The foundation ingredients for VisiVite Balanced
Ocular Support are the premium, natural molecules
known as carotenoids, including FloraGLO Lutein,
OmniXan Zeaxanthin and AstaREAL Astaxanthin,
These compounds provide the yellows and reds
found in flowers, vegetables and egg yolks. More
importantly, the critical macular segment of the eye
preferentially absorbs these colored molecules –
which are visible not only in https://blog.visivite.
retinal photographs, but also measurements
of macular pigment optical density (MPOD).
Carotenoids not only act as powerful antioxidants,
they also absorb blue light, thereby improving
contrast and promoting eye health.
European Black Currant Extract, with Cyanidin-
3-Glucosides, improve dark adaptation following
bright light exposure. This not only speeds visual
recovery when coming indoors, for example,
following being outside at the beach. It also
improves visual recovery when entering a tunnel
when driving. Slowed dark adaptation is one of the
hallmark findings in patients who have macular
degeneration.
Finally, VisiVite Balanced Ocular Support
adds microcirculation-boosting ginkgo biloba,
inflammation-modulating turmeric and a range of
protective super-antioxidants, including Grapeseed
Extract, N-Acetyl Cysteine, Quercetin, Rutin, and
Taurine, providing maximum support for eye health.
Requires 2 capsules daily.
Beta carotene
in eye
vitamins?
The AREDS2 study found that people who took
beta carotene had LOWER plasma levels of
lutein and zeaxanthin than people who didn’t take beta
carotene.
Why? Because these 3 “carotenoids” compete for
absorption.
Plus, beta carotene raised the risk of lung cancer.
And not just in smokers.
That’s why you won’t find any beta carotene in any
of Dr. Krawitz’s AREDS 2 Eye Vitamins.
