Q/Ans

Lesson 4

Q 1 What are heat zones? Explain the three heat zones

with the help of diagram.

Ans

Heat Zones

The earth is divided into three parts according to the heat received

from sun. These divisions are known as heat zones.

1 Torrid Zone: The climate here is extremely hot. It is the hottest zone on

the Earth.

2 Temperate Zone: The climate here is moderate i.e. neither too hot nor

too cold.

3 Frigid Zone: The climate here is extremely cold. It is the coldest zone

on the Earth.

Q2 Distinguish between weather and climate.

Ans

WEATHER

1.Weather is the condition of

atmosphere at a given time and

place.

2. It keeps changing suddenly or

gradually.

3.Changes in weather give rise to

seasons.

CLIMATE

1. Climate is the average weather

condition of a place.

2. It remains same for many years.

3. Climate is defined by the

constant changes in seasons.

Q3 How does latitude affect the climate of a place?

Ans

Latitudes affect the climate of a place very much. Latitudes near

equator receive direct sunrays and the areas are hot. As we move

to the higher latitudes towards the poles, the sunrays become

slanting and the areas are cooler.

Q 4 What effect do winds have on the climate of an

area?

Ans Winds have a great effect on the climate of an area. Winds blowing

from hot areas increase the temperature and the winds blowing

from cold areas decrease the temperature.

Q5 What is global warming? What are its causes?

Ans Due to pollution, greenhouse gases are increasing in the

atmosphere. These gases trap the heat of the sun and increase the

temperature. The average increase in the temperature is known as

global warming.

The main causes of global warming are:

Deforestation

Burning of fossil fuels

Smoke from industries

Smoke from vehicles

Extra Question

Q1 Name the main types of weather conditions.

Ans Main types of weather conditions are:

Sunny • Rainy • Cloudy • Snowy • Windy

Q2 Explain the following types of climate: a) moderate

b) extreme

Ans

Moderate climate:

The climate when there is neither too hot nor too cold, it is known

as moderate climate.

Extreme climate:

The climate when there is very cold in winter and very hot in

summer, it is called extreme climate.

Q 3 Define a) Sea breeze b) Land breeze

Ans a) Sea breeze:

During the day, the land heats up more quickly than sea.The warm

air above land rises up and the cool air from sea takes its place.

This is known as sea breeze.

b) Land breeze :

During the night, the land cools down more quickly than sea. The

warm air above sea rises up and the cool air from land takes its

place. This is known as land breeze.
