16 | SALUTING THE CLASS OF 2020 TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 2020Martinez, Travis stand at head of the GHS Class of 2020MARIO MARTINEZJULIA TRAVISGUSTINE - Two students with a numberof similar traits stand at the head ofthe Gustine High Class of 2020.Mario Martinez is the class valedictorian.Julia Travis is the salutatorian.Each started their schooling at OurLady of Miracles Catholic School beforemoving to Gustine Elementary in the upperelementary grade levels.Each plans to attend UC Berkeley.Each has long been driven to excel academically,with the goal of graduating atthe top of their class.Each has parents who instilled the valueof education in their children.Each envisions a career path in themedical field - although in different specialties.MARIO MARTINEZMartinez, the class valedictorian, saidhe was motivated in large part by thehard work and sacrifices of his parents,Leticia and Mario Martinez.“I am trying to make the most of theopportunity I am given to make themproud,” said the valedictorian.Throughout high school, Martinez reflected,he stayed focused on his academicgoals, often staying at home to studywhile his friends went out.Being valedictorian was a primarygoal, he told Mattos Newspapers.“The satisfaction of having straight A’skept me going,” said Martinez, who saidhe took all the AP courses he could. “Mysenior year I got to experience more sociallife, so it balanced out.”Through his years at Gustine High,Martinez was involved in track, band,ASB, Interact, Spanish Club and RegalReds - a movie club he and Travis wereinvolved in forming as juniors.Band was a favorite part of high school,said Martinez, who played trumpet. Hehopes to play in the UC Berkeley marchingband as well.In addition to his musical pursuits,Martinez enjoys drawing and painting.....all outlets for his creativity.Martinez plans to major in bio-engineering,with the goal of a career in theresearch and development of new medicines.The loss of a grandparent to cancerhelped influence the decision, he shared.“Science is making a difference in people’slives,” Martinez reflected.He said he enjoyed the small-schoolenvironment at Gustine High.“I think it makes for a very inclusivecommunity,” Martinez commented.And from the small, rural school, hesaid, students can chart whatever futurethey choose.“Where you come from doesn’t affecthow far you can go,” Martinez said.JULIA TRAVISTravis was equally motivated toachieve academically.“School was a big emphasis in myhousehold. It has been very importantto me,” said the salutatorian, who is thedaughter of Lisa and Jeremy Travis. “Ihave so much support from my family, Ifeel that it is my responsibility to use thatsupport and turn it into something great.”Travis said she gave up some activitiesto devote herself to her education, butsaid she was grateful for having done so.“It was all worth those sacrifices,” shereflected.Travis said she came to Gustine Highintent on being valedictorian or salutatorian- and understanding that to reachthat goal she must achieve from the outset.“You have to go in with that mindset,”she commented.Travis said one of her most valuableaccomplishments at Gustine High waslearning Spanish. She took Spanish coursesthroughout high school.Travis did not only flourish academicallyat Gustine High.She was active in student leadership atGustine High and involved in the school’sASB throughout her four years on campus.Her ASB involvement began as aneighth-grader, Travis noted, and furtherflourished at Gustine High.Those skills were further developed byher role as a cabin leader for sixth-gradecamp and summer camp groups at GreenMeadows Outdoor School and by participatingin a Rotary-sponsored leadershipprogram, she noted.“I grew those (leadership) skillsso much more in high school,” she remarked.Now, Travis looks to her future withplans to major in nutritional sciences andeventually become a doctor - possibly apediatrician.She finds the medical field fascinating.“I couldn’t see myself doing anythingelse,” Travis said.
