richer than it otherwise would be.

We provide a 24 hour service with a wide

range of presenter-led and other prerecorded

programmes, details of which

are available on our website as well as

further on within this magazine.

which isn’t catered for elsewhere in our

so we can include this within one of our

Dear Reader,

Hello and thank you for reading our

Hospital Radio magazine which we hope

tells you a little more about the service we

provide to the patients.

Hospital Radio has been a part of the

life of the hospital here in Milton Keynes

since 1984 with the aim of providing

entertainment and helping the recovery of

patients over the years.

Various studies have proved how music

is fundamental to developing well-being

to people and this is particularly the case

with those who are recovering from illness.

Our service continues to be run by a loyal

and hardworking band of volunteers who

not only produce and deliver programmes

over the radio but also take part in

fundraising events, plan and undertake

outside broadcasts, carry out ward visiting

and maintain our studios & broadcasting

equipment.

I take my hat off to all the members for

their dedication and devotion in making

your stay here in the hospital just a little

We would like to thank all those other

individuals and organisations who

support us by providing content for our

programmes, additional funding or simply

support us in our wider charitable aims.

Finally, if you feel you can bring something

new to our service or support the great

work already being provided then please

complete the application form on our

website so we can begin the process to

get you on board.

Making a Lasting Power of Attorney puts you in control

There is no specific age when you should consider

making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) as

anyone can lose capacity at any time through

illness or if injured in an accident.

What is important to note is that you can only set

up an LPA when you have mental capacity. Once

you’ve lost capacity, it’s too late!

So, what is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?

An LPA is a legal document in which you can

appoint someone you trust to act on your behalf as

your attorney if there comes a time when you

cannot make decisions for yourself in connection

with your property, financial affairs, health &

welfare matters.

What happens if you don’t have an LPA?

Without a formal LPA your relatives or those you

trust cannot manage your affairs even if it is to help

you. If you do not have an LPA and you lose the

ability to manage your own affairs then your assets

will be frozen until a Court order can be obtained.

It is therefore best to plan ahead and set up an LPA

while you are still in good mental health, removing

any future burden from your family.

At Geoffrey Leaver Solicitors the team will take the

time to guide you through the process from start to

finish from initial consultation right through to

storing the registered documents.

We also believe that being a successful law firm is

more than just about delivering a quality service to

our clients but also supporting the wider

community, that’s why we will make a £50

donation to the Milton Keynes Hospital Charity*

for every Lasting Power of Attorney completed.

So, if you have been considering setting up a

Lasting Power of Attorney and would also like to

help the Milton Keynes Hospital Charity, call our

legal experts on 01908 689317

quoting MK Hospital Charity.

*Terms & Conditions apply - *£50 donation to MK Hospital Charity for every LPA completed by Geoffrey Leaver

Solicitors and on payment of fees in full. Offer cannot be used in conjuction with any other offer. Promotion Valid until 31st March 2020.

matters so you

Three years ago, Vice Chairman Martin

Thorpe came to the committee with a

‘wild’ idea – he wanted to build a second

studio within the same space we currently

occupied.

His proposal involved raising

approximately thirty thousand through

sponsors, donations and fundraising. It

seemed like an impossible feat – however

nothing is too much for MKHR.

The following three years were full of

challenges and obstacles as we worked

hard to entirely redesign the layout of our

studio and offi ces.

Our main wall was knocked down and

moved to give us approximately a foot

more room. This was the only part of Studio

2 that was outsourced to a contractor.

Our volunteers built an internal wall,

painted and wallpapered, installed

windows, sourced the mod cons needed

for the studio and even built computers

from scratch in order to keep the quality

high but the cost low. The second studio

has truly been a labour of love.

On October 6th (2019), we held a Grand

STUDIO 2 IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!

Opening for our second studio. Our

massive celebration was attended by some

of our wonderful donors; including Asda’s

community champion Suzanne, HBA

treasurer Mike Sarre and Senior Members

Andrew Hough and Phil Blacklaw.

As our Grand Opening was happening

alongside Live30, our guests were able to

watch Martin present the fi nale live from

our second studio.

The opening was a monumental occasion

for the volunteers who have given their

time to the studio; none more than Vice

Chairman Martin Thorpe who has been

the driving force behind the project.

Many evenings and weekends have been

spent in the studio; building, decorating,

creating and tidying the studio to make it

look fantastic.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of all

volunteers who helped make Studio 2 –

now to update Studio1.

Positivity - Soul Strivin’, Good Vibin’

A negative and a negative make a

negative. A negative and a positive make

a negative. But a positive and a positive

make a positive.

We all know this about simple maths

calculations, right? Well, this whole “only

positives alone will make positives” thing is

not just applicable in your maths GCSEs,

A Levels or O Levels. No - it’s applicable

in life entirely!

A quick search on the “benefi ts of positive

thinking” will infi nitely tell you of research

into how being optimistic and thinking

generally good thoughts improves your

recovery in both physical and mental

health matters.

It’s hard though to fi nd any statistics on

fi ndings as it’s such a subjective study

topic. Something that I did read though,

that I feel gives a good measure of how

our thoughts and outlook can have an

impact on our overall being, is this:

“When we know someone who is always

smiling, happy, and who we think ‘has

everything’, we immediately think they’ve

fallen into fortune or have simply been

lucky in life. But what we never see is

that, perhaps, they have ‘everything’, good

fortune and wellbeing BECAUSE they’re

always smiling and happy”.

That’s why Hospital Radio is so important.

It takes listeners minds off whatever

By Dean Carroll

situation they’re in and therefore rid them of

any boredom or worry-induced emotions,

feelings and thoughts. With those aside,

recovery can only be improved and that

wellbeing restored to maximum levels.

“But any radio can do that!” I hear you

cry. Well yes, you would be right, but the

difference with us at Hospital Radio is

that we’re close to you. We’re in the same

building, maybe our studio’s even under

or above your bed (you would never know

unless I’m in and cranking up the volume

to Bruce Springsteen, Fat Freddy’s Drop

or Years & Years!).

We’re from your community and we’ve

all been treated in this hospital. This

closeness means means that that we get we the get vibes the in

the vibes building; in the building; we can bring we can you bring relatable you

chat relatable and are chat not and only are in your not ears...but only in your are

in ears...but your company! are in your company!

Now then, this ladies and gentleman, leads

me delightfully from the very foundations

upon which the Good Vibes on Saturday

Morning show was established, and the

very reason I give reverence to Hospital

Radio and, particularly, your MK Hospital

Radio!

I want to send out those positive vibrations

to your quivering ear drums that’ll fl ick that

switch - you know, where you suddenly

sit back, smile to yourself, and think

“everything’s going to be alright!” Go

wild on the dials, tune in, big up your bad

selves, stay bright and stay right!

Deep in the dusty archives, behind the CDs

and vinyl, is our old broadcast equipment.

This consists of dual CD players, faders and

an outlet for the microphone. That’s it.

It has sat collecting dust for a little while,

replaced by the modern broadcast equipment

that Vice Chairman Martin Thorpe uses for

This is not a bad thing, the updated equipment

allows us to broadcast back to the studio and

Everything had to be meticulously planned;

there was no laptop to hide behind or jingles if

I became stuck. Tina and I created a show full

of songs designed to cheer up anyone who

heard it. Once the songs were picked, they

had to be sourced from our CD once they had

all been collected, it was time to go live. I was

so nervous looking at the equipment on the

desk. There were no jingles or messages to

hide behind, it was just me and the CD’s. The

two hours flew by with very little problems

and everyone was dancing – a family of four

walking past and even our Chairman Phil

who never dances.

The best part of the show was the end, a

colleague from the PALS office came up to

Tina and said “Thank you. You’ve made my

afternoon a lot brighter”. You can’t ask for

more than that, can you?

30 Hours of LIVE Broadcasting

Helping Keep MKHR On-Air

At 10am on Saturday 5th October 2019;

Tina, Dean and Sarah-Jayne launched

Live30. The annual marathon, started

by the late Bob Pring six years ago,

consists of thirty continuous hours of live

broadcasting.

Our presenters are not allowed off air at

any point until 4pm the following afternoon,

even through the night.

During the 30 hours, listeners were treated

to a whole variety of shows. Love songs,

breakfast shows, disco, funk, soul and

even audiobooks (read live) were featured

over the thirty hours.

Throughout the shows, we accepted

requests from patients within the hospital

and online listeners – even as far as

America. In addition to our presenters in

the studio, Vice Chairman Martin Thorpe

brought you all the action from StadiumMK,

as the MK Don’s took on Burton.

Unfortunately, the magic of Live30 didn’t

transfer to the match and the Don’s lost 3

– 0.

The marathon is not just fun, but helps us

to raise crucial funds for the station. Each

of our volunteers asked their friends, family

and work colleagues to sponsor their time

slot, each trying to raise the most and outdo

their previous years fundraising total.

As we receive no outside funding, it is the

generosity of donors which keeps us able

to broadcast daily.

We finished our thirty hour marathon

broadcast with two hours in the foyer of the

hospital. Armed with magazines, yellow

buckets and tins of chocolate, we spoke to

all the visitors who came to the hospital.

Along with the fantastic sponsorship each

volunteer collected for their hard work,

generous visitors dropped £78 worth of

change into the buckets. Every single penny

raised goes towards the improvement and

continuation of our station – a huge THANK

YOU to all who donated.

ROCKING OUT TO RAISE MONEY!

For the past few years, we have

collaborated with the MK Rock Choir to

bring you a night of fantastic live music.

This is broadcast to you live and then

repeated throughout the year so you don’t

miss out. We always set the bar high,

wanting you to have such a good time that

you forget you are in the hospital even

momentarily, but this year the MK Rock

Choir outdid themselves.

We moved from the All Saints Church in

Bletchley to Kents Hill Secondary School

auditorium and, as the show started we

could see why. There was not an empty

seat in the room, friends and family of the

rock choir coming to see this amazing

show.

Lizzie Deane and her incredible singers

treated us to thirty minutes of upbeat

music, each song met with a round of

applause so loud that we had to turn the

microphones down.

who had an incredible surprise. A member

of the Rock Choir named Linda had been

talking to HSBC who agreed to double the

money raised taking our title to £1210.

Clearly it is the season of giving as

another member, who would like to remain

nameless, donated another £200 to the

cause.

We were overwhelmed with the generous

nature of each and every person who has

donated. Every single penny of the £1,410

will go towards keeping the station on air

and creating content that makes you forget

where you are – even if for a little while.

All the Volunteers from Milton Keynes

Hospital Radio would like to say a BIG

THANK YOU to the Milton Keynes Rock Choir

for all of your support and generosity!

On top of providing the patients at the

hospital with an incredible live show,

members of the Rock Choir and Hospital

Radio Volunteers each donated a prize to

So much was donated that it took over

four different tables and over six hundred

pound was raised on the door.

40 Years of Hospital Radio

Alan Clarke

from the Manchester clubs of City and United.

I was also record librarian and treasurer.

Also at Radio Cavell I would spend most of

my Saturday nights doing mobile disco’s for

the Station raising necessary funds. Over

the year’s I have done Weddings, 18th and

21st Birthdays along with Doctors, Police and

Councillors balls.

I started Hospital Radio in Oldham at Radio

Cavell in 1979, initially I went along as a

Venture Scout with a friend and we were

working towards our Community Badge.

I assisted on a Friday Night visiting the

wards and handing out Bingo tickets so that

the patients could take part in Radio Bingo.

Eventually I left the Scouts but continued

with the Hospital Radio. In time I took over

the Friday Night Bingo show, and became a

Radio Bingo caller, legs 11 and clickety click

and all that!!

During my time at Radio Cavell I presented the

Saturday afternoon Sports programme for 5

years which featured the home Commentary

from Oldham Athletic and half time reports

In 1985 I moved to Slough due to a change

in job and initially joined Radio Wexham in

Slough but could not commit the time due

to study requirements and in 1986 moved

to Leighton Buzzard and then joined Milton

Keynes Hospital Radio.

I started at Milton Keynes Hospital Radio

on a Tuesday evening and then moved to a

Wednesday night and for the last few years

have been presenting between 6pm and

7pm on a Thursday Night. In 2000 I became

a Trustee and Secretary of the organisation.

Hospital Radio gives me the opportunity to

enjoy listening to music and hopefully the

music I play (which is generally for the 70’s

and 80’s) make somebody who is not in the

best place smile.

Best Wishes,

A Blast from the Past...

By Tina Collins

I have been presenting the Retro Show,

currently on a Thursday evening, for

almost a decade. It’s more than just a

show for me, it’s something I genuinely

love doing.

I like to bring some of the older tunes to

the listening audience because, for me,

it’s like inviting my friends around to listen

to some good music and having a bit of a

chat. The only thing missing is the drink

and nibbles.

The show fl ies by, with some fun trivia

questions along the way and a bit of a

discussion around past events thrown

in too. I hope the hour of nostalgia puts

a smile on the patients faces and has

hopefully provided some respite from

focusing on their recovery.

I have been a Milton Keynes Hospital

Radio presenter for over 8 years and enjoy

meeting the patients, whether over the

phone or in person.

As a regular participant at the Outside

Broadcast events, which are normally

lively and interactive, it is great to see the

pleasure we bring to the families visiting

as well, the smile on their faces when we

tell them we will happily surprise their sick

relative with a song and a shout out makes

it so worth it.

So if you fi nd yourself an in-patient, or are

visiting a loved one, keep your eyes on the

MKHRS website www.mkhrs.org.uk for a

list of events and I look forward to seeing

you there!

What Did You Say You Do?

By Rose-Marie

When I was a young child and I was asked

‘what do you want to do when you grow

up?’ My answer changed daily. However

my Sunday morning show, ‘Rose Marieon-Sundays’

has given me the opportunity

to indulge in my childhood fantasy.

So what connection does being a volunteer

for Milton Keynes Hospital Radio have to

do with my childhood dreams?

My husband has been in and out of the

MKUH as a patient for the last 8 years.

If he was in the hospital on Saturdays,

I could count on him listening to the MK

Don’s game via the Hospital Radio.

My fi rst thought was ‘Milton Keynes has

a radio station?’ Several weeks later, I

was networking at a speakers’ conference

and met a woman who had just won the

Presenter of the Year Award at the Hospital

Broadcasting Association Awards. We

chatted about the organizations and her

role.

The next time I visited my husband at the

hospital. Milton Keynes Hospital Radio’s

Chairperson, Phil Yates and several

volunteers were in the MKUH lobby

soliciting for donations and explaining their

organization. When fate hits you for the

third time, you know you better answer!

I applied to be part of MKHRS. Tina and

Sarah-Jayne took me under their wing and

instructed me, not only on how to manage

the technical aspect of the job, but the

interaction with patients.

Most people do do not not wish wish to be to in be the in

hospital. the hospital. Nor do they Nor wish do to they be separated wish to

from be separated their family and from friends. their The family Monday and

th friends. Friday Monday MKHRS through Presenters Friday visit MKHRS the

wards, Presenters giving visit the patients the wards, the opportunity giving the

to patients think of the other opportunity things besides to think medicines of other

and things being besides alone. They medicines discuss songs and being and

artists alone. and They who discuss patients songs wish to and dedicate artists

their and song who for patients our weeknight wish to request dedicate show. their

song for our weeknight request show.

After working several months on MKHRS

with my husband being a patient on a

regular basis, I noticed that early Sunday’s

was when there were fewest visitors.

From this observation, the concept for

‘Rose Marie-on-Sundays’ was born.

Once I thought about presenting a Sunday

show, what should I do as a show topic?

From the fi rst time I mentioned that I was a

radio presenter, I had people tell me... ‘You

should talk to this person’ or ‘You should

talk to that person’. So I did AND I found

them all interesting – and Rose Marie on

Sundays was born.

The common factor amongst my guests is

that they are passionate about their fi eld of

interests. Whether it be how to write books

and get them published, the passion of ice

cream and baking cakes, photography,

poetry and so many more.

This is ‘Rose Marie on-Sundays’ third year

and there are so many more people to

be interviewed. I may not be a singer or

photographer or politician, but I can learn

what it would be like if I was one!

From years of talking to patients, both a

mix of long term and short term, we know

that being in the hospital can be a time

Impressive changes have happened

around the hospital over the last few years;

Costa, Subway and a shop were built in

the brand new reception amongst others.

Our teams started to notice more and more

of you were walking around the hospital

Porter by day, Presenter by night!

other times we might be

thinking about the overtime

willingly stay behind and give

our time for free. However,

that’s what volunteering is all about, spending your free time

fi nish off that one final task.

Phil doesn’t just volunteer at MKHR, he works here at the hospital

too! When he’s not ferrying patients back and forth between the X-

Ray department, setting up ultrasounds and other treatments,

you’ll find him spinning the decks with the Friday Night Request

team or presenting his own show, aptly titled ‘The Phil Thexton

Show’.

Many people are surprised that Hospital Radio still exists and that’s

no surprise really. With the technology and entertainment that’s

now available at our finger tips, who needs a radio station based in

the hospital? That’s certainly the case for Phil who worked here for

seven years before finally joining the ranks of our amazing

volunteer after seeing the posters outside our studio door.

Not many of us though would willingly

or national radio stations? We know

EXACTLY where our audience is. You

are minutes away from our studio door,

just along the corridor. We don’t have to

go far to talk to you, learn more about you

and grab your attention. However, with a

constantly revolving audience, keeping

our visibility up is hard work.

That’s why volunteers like Phil are so vital

to MKHR. Not only does he play fantastic

music, tell local stories and host guests

on the Phil Thexton Show but, perhaps

more importantly, he is also out on the

wards every week. He likes chatting to

patients, to play them tracks which invoke

memories that put a smile on your faces

throughout your stay and just ensuring

– for the duration of their request – their

worries go away. When you ask Phil

what he likes most about volunteering for

MKHR, he says:

“Community”. It is hardly surprising to

know Phil’s not just talking about the

volunteers; but the patients, doctors

and nurses too. We all have the same

goal: to help you feel better.

You get so much back from your time and

commitment to the station; not just the

instant fi xes such as the smiles on patients

faces, but personal too. For Phil, MKHR

has given him more confi dence than he

has had before. When he fi rst started,

he was happy to take the back seat and

simply assist at a request show. Now he

presents his own shows, approaching

NHS employees to come and share their

top 10 songs, and runs a Friday night

request show too.

Anything Minestrone Soup

The inevitable cold and fl u season has arrived

once more, sending us rushing out for over-thecounter

remedies.

While some products may ease uncomfortable

symptoms, a healthy immune system is key to

help defend against these invading viruses.

Along with hydration, plenty of exercise, and

restful sleep, we need to consume a healthy

balanced mix of nutrients to fully support our

Immune system.

Therefore, this aptly named soup is a perfect

winter warmer to help deliver those vital nutrients

in an easy to make, deeply fl avoursome meal.

Delicious and versatile, this low-cost recipe

makes a very fi lling soup which is low in fat and

very nutritious.

This soup will give a comforting healthy hug if

you are feeling under the weather, and what

could be better on a cold soggy day, than

the heavenly warming aroma of a big pot of

goodness simmering on the stove top!

Healthy is our passion.

year battle with Cancer and especially

towards the end as much as he was

surrounded by his loving family he still

felt very lonely and lost at times and he

often discussed having a ‘buddy’ to

support him and help him where he

felt things were missing.

What our Client’s Say

“Navdip ....was excellent, professional and

extremely helpful throughout the whole process...”

Ms Suchorab

to secure your own, and your loved ones’ future, it

could mean that loved ones are left with additional

expense, stress and worry, should the worst happen

to you.

At Franklins we treat each client individually and

make writing your Will as straightforward as

possible, ensuring your particular needs are met.

We can also assist with the preparation of Lasting

Powers of Attorney (LPA). These allow you to

appoint people you trust to manage your affairs

should age, a serious accident or sudden change in

health affect your ability to make these decisions.

You can only create an LPA when you have capacity

and as no-one knows what tomorrow may bring,

having this in place now will help put your mind at

ease.
