In this guide, you will get a first overview of <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes, of responsibilities and application<br />

deadlines, which have to be considered, if you intend to start a Master course of studies at <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Mannheim in <strong>the</strong> spring term 2013.<br />

Please note: All <strong>information</strong> correspond to <strong>the</strong> current level of <strong>information</strong>. Changes are possible<br />

both in respect of <strong>the</strong> application process and <strong>the</strong> Selection Statutes. Therefore, please check our<br />

website bewerbung.uni-mannheim.de regularly.<br />

Please apply as early as possible!!!<br />

Only if you apply early, we have <strong>the</strong> chance to check your application documents<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are complete and are able to request for important missing<br />

documents per email if necessary.<br />

You have to apply for all of <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes and each one has a restriction on admission. In<br />

this guide, you find <strong>information</strong> <strong>about</strong> <strong>the</strong> application process and requirements for an application to <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Mannheim. Please read this guide carefully. Certainly, many of your questions will be<br />

answered afterwards.<br />

Please refer to <strong>the</strong> German brochure “Infos für das Masterstudium” if you are interested in a German<br />

Master Programme as this guide focuses on <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes taught in English.<br />

The University of Mannheim offers <strong>the</strong> applicants a two-stage application procedure. Firstly, you<br />

need to apply online; secondly, you send your Application Form for Admission toge<strong>the</strong>r with all<br />

required documents <strong>by</strong> post to <strong>the</strong> Admissions Office.<br />

The application is obligatory for any Master Programme.<br />

1. General Information <strong>about</strong> <strong>the</strong> Admissions Process<br />

1.1 General Application Requirements<br />

The University of Mannheim operates its own selection processes for <strong>the</strong> graduate courses of study. In<br />

principle, <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes are consecutive, which means <strong>the</strong>y require a corresponding<br />

Bachelor course of study as defined <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Statutes of Selection. The Bachelor’s degree could be<br />

passed ei<strong>the</strong>r at a <strong>university</strong> in Germany or at a <strong>university</strong> abroad as well as at a “Berufsakademie” ( a<br />

state-certified <strong>university</strong> of cooperative education) or at a University of Applied Sciences.<br />

1.2 Restriction on Admission<br />

All <strong>university</strong> places in <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes <strong>offered</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of Mannheim are allocated to<br />

<strong>the</strong> applicants <strong>by</strong> a selection process and are restricted on admission. The online application is<br />

obligatory.<br />

1.3 Application Form for Admission<br />

In <strong>the</strong> application process for <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes, you are allowed to submit up to three<br />

Application Forms for Admission each containing one main request for <strong>the</strong> spring term 2013. All<br />

Application Forms are treated equally. Please consider <strong>the</strong> different Requirements for Admission and<br />

Selection Criteria of <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes.<br />

1.4 Master Programmes and Deadlines for <strong>the</strong> Application<br />

In <strong>the</strong> following, you will get a first overview of <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes <strong>offered</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Mannheim. In case you are or were enrolled in a similar Master Programme, please apply for a higher<br />

subject-related semester.<br />

• have got a Bachelor’s degree acquired in Germany (even if you do not get your degree until <strong>the</strong><br />

2. Requirements for Admission and Selection Criteria for each Master Programme<br />

2.1 General Information <strong>about</strong> <strong>the</strong> Requirements for Admission and Selection Criteria<br />

Requirements for Admission of each of <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes can be found in <strong>the</strong> Selection Statutes<br />

(German only) which can be downloaded on <strong>the</strong> following website:<br />

You need to apply for each of <strong>the</strong> <strong>offered</strong> Master Programmes in due time and form.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> appendix of <strong>the</strong> printed Application Form for Admission, you will find a checklist which will list all<br />

necessary documents clearly structured. Please read this checklist carefully, since incomplete<br />

applications have to be excluded from <strong>the</strong> admissions process.<br />

2.2 Bachelor’s degree not yet completed<br />

If you have not yet completed your Bachelor’s degree within <strong>the</strong> application deadline, you may still<br />

apply for a Master Programme. However, you need to have successfully completed a certain amount of<br />

ECTS as stated in <strong>the</strong> Selection Statute. To prove <strong>the</strong> number of ECTS, please send in a current<br />

Transcript of Records. This document (original, bearing <strong>the</strong> official stamp and a signature of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>university</strong>) has to arrive at <strong>the</strong> Admissions Office before <strong>the</strong> deadline of <strong>the</strong> application.<br />

Please note: Transcripts of Records containing a verification link or code can only be accepted if this<br />

document can be downloaded completely.<br />

Please note: If <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s degree has not been completed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> end of application period, <strong>the</strong><br />

admission to a Master Programme is preliminary as you have to hand in your Bachelor’s degree to <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Mannheim until <strong>the</strong> first registration for an exam. If you do not send in this document in<br />

due time, your acceptance to <strong>the</strong> Master Programme expires.<br />

2.3 Information <strong>about</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual Master Programmes<br />

In <strong>the</strong> following, you will get an overview of <strong>the</strong> important criteria which are essential for <strong>the</strong> application<br />

(Requirements for Admission) and those which are not obligatory but may enhance your chances in<br />

getting a <strong>university</strong> place (Selection Criteria). Please note: Many of <strong>the</strong> <strong>offered</strong> Master Programmes<br />

require <strong>the</strong> proof of good German language skills. These <strong>programmes</strong> are highlighted in yellow.<br />

The University of Mannheim offers several courses in English within <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes in order to<br />

prepare <strong>the</strong> graduates for an internationally oriented career. Programmes that are completely taught in<br />

English are <strong>the</strong> following: M.A. Political Science, M.Sc. Economics as well as <strong>the</strong> Master of<br />

Comparative Law. The Mannheim Master in Management (M.Sc.) as well as <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. in Business<br />

Informatics also offer an all-English track.<br />

2.3.1 Master of Arts – History<br />

Requirements for Admission Selection Criteria<br />

• A Bachelor’s Degree in History or a subject-related<br />

degree which was completed with a grade of at<br />

least „good“ (German Grade equivalent 2,5) or<br />

better at a <strong>university</strong> in Germany or abroad (also<br />

“Berufsakademie”); Standard period of study: at<br />

least 3 years<br />

• Proof of good German language skills 1<br />

• In case that an applicant does not satisfy individual<br />

requirements, <strong>the</strong> Selection Board may decide<br />

individually.<br />

• The final grade or - for students still completing<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir degree - <strong>the</strong> average grade of <strong>the</strong> marks so far<br />

• Relevant essay in German of up to 5 pages <strong>about</strong> a<br />

historical issue<br />

• Relevant publications<br />

• Stays abroad lasting several months<br />

• Relevant awards<br />

• There may be selection interviews.


2.3.2 Master of Arts – Intercultural German Studies<br />

Requirements for Admission Selection Criteria<br />

• A completed Bachelor’s degree in German studies<br />

or an equivalent recognized degree in humanities<br />

or cultural studies which was completed with a<br />

grade of at least „good“ (German Grade equivalent<br />

2,5) or better at a <strong>university</strong> in Germany or abroad<br />

(also “Berufsakademie”); Standard period of study:<br />

at least 3 years<br />

• Proof of good German language skills 1<br />

• Proof of good English language skills (Level B2 2 )<br />

• In case that an applicant does not satisfy individual<br />

requirements, <strong>the</strong> Selection Board may decide<br />

individually.<br />

• The final grade or - for students still completing<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir degree - <strong>the</strong> average grade of <strong>the</strong> marks so far<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s degree<br />

• Letter of Motivation in English with a maximum of<br />

500 words containing:<br />

• Motivation for <strong>the</strong> Master Programme in German<br />

Studies<br />

• Reasons for <strong>the</strong> selection of <strong>the</strong> binational Master<br />

Programme <strong>offered</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of Mannheim<br />

and <strong>the</strong> University of Waterloo<br />

• Planned focal point during <strong>the</strong> Master study<br />

• Professional aims<br />

• Relevance of <strong>the</strong> completed Bachelor’s degree<br />

• Relevant professional activities (professional<br />

training, internships 3 , working experience)<br />

• Stays abroad (High School Year, Au-Pair, civilian<br />

service/ internship abroad, semester abroad)<br />

• Scientific presentations and publications<br />

• Relevant awards and voluntary work<br />

• There may be selection interviews.<br />

The Joint Master Programme in Intercultural German Studies is <strong>offered</strong> <strong>by</strong> both universities – <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Mannheim as well as <strong>the</strong> University of Waterloo (Canada). Two terms are to be spent at <strong>the</strong> corresponding partner<br />

<strong>university</strong>.<br />

2.3.3 Master of Arts – Culture in <strong>the</strong> Process of <strong>the</strong> Modern Age<br />

Requirements for Admission Selection Criteria<br />

• A completed Bachelor’s degree in Literature or a<br />

Philology or an equivalent recognized degree in<br />

humanities containing at least one basic module in<br />

literature or equivalent performances which was<br />

completed with a grade of at least „good“ (German<br />

Grade equivalent 2,5) or better at a <strong>university</strong> in<br />

Germany or abroad (also “Berufsakademie”);<br />

Standard period of study: at least 3 years<br />

• If one of <strong>the</strong> following languages is selected as<br />

focal point, proofs of <strong>the</strong> language of at least level<br />

C1 2 are required: English, French, Spanish<br />

• If <strong>the</strong> focal point is to be German: language skills<br />

(level B2 2 ) in English, French or Spanish are<br />

required<br />

• Proof of good German language skills 1<br />

• In case that an applicant does not satisfy individual<br />

requirements, <strong>the</strong> Selection Board may decide<br />

individually.<br />

• The final grade or - for students still completing<br />

The new Selection Statute of <strong>the</strong> Mannheim Master in Management provides two tracks: a German-English track as well as an<br />

3.1 Documents to hand in<br />

The online application is obligatory for each Master Programme. After entering all data online, please<br />

print <strong>the</strong> Application Form for Admission. We would ask you not to change any data <strong>by</strong> hand on <strong>the</strong><br />

printed form without contacting <strong>the</strong> Admissions Office. Please send in amongst o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong> following<br />

documents <strong>by</strong> post to <strong>the</strong> Admissions Office (Postal Address see point 3.2)<br />

1) Printed and signed Application Form for Admission<br />

2) University Entrance Qualification (e.g. “High School Diploma”, “Attestat”, etc.) or a subjectrestricted<br />

Higher Entrance Qualification acquired in Germany or abroad. Please note: A degree<br />

which has been obtained at a German University is also a University Entrance Qualification<br />

3) Proof of <strong>the</strong> requirements of your chosen Master Programme (e.g. au<strong>the</strong>nticated Transcript of<br />

In <strong>the</strong> appendix of <strong>the</strong> Application Form for Admission, you will find a list which will help you to compile<br />

all documents. Please read this list attentively since application forms not handed in in due time<br />

and form have to be excluded from <strong>the</strong> admissions process.<br />

All documents which prove <strong>the</strong> requirements for admission (see point 2.3) have to be handed in as<br />

au<strong>the</strong>nticated copies.<br />

Please note: foreign documents could only be accepted ei<strong>the</strong>r in German or English. If your documents<br />

are written in ano<strong>the</strong>r language, a translation into German or English is necessary, additionally. All<br />

records and Transcripts of Records need to be translated <strong>by</strong> a sworn translator. The module catalogue,<br />

plan of studies and <strong>the</strong> examination regulations (especially relevant for <strong>the</strong> Mannheim Master in<br />

Management as well as for <strong>the</strong> Master in Business Informatics) can be translated <strong>by</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r person if<br />

your <strong>university</strong> testifies <strong>the</strong> correctness <strong>by</strong> an official stamp and signature.<br />

Please note: Transcripts of Records bearing a verification link or code may only be accepted if <strong>the</strong><br />

document can be downloaded completely.<br />

3.2 Important <strong>information</strong> concerning <strong>the</strong> Application Form for Admission<br />

After you have filled in all data in <strong>the</strong> online Application Form for Admission, please print <strong>the</strong> document.<br />

Afterwards, you have to sign it and send <strong>the</strong> form toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> requested records and proofs to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Admissions Office. In <strong>the</strong> appendix of <strong>the</strong> Application Form for Admission, you will find a checklist<br />

that will help you to check whe<strong>the</strong>r your documents are complete.<br />

Only Application Forms for Admission which have been filled in completely, which are signed and which<br />

contain all <strong>the</strong> relevant documents can participate in <strong>the</strong> admissions process. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong><br />

application has to arrive until <strong>the</strong> according application deadline at <strong>the</strong> Admissions Office.<br />

3.2.1 Confirmation of Receipt<br />

The use of <strong>the</strong> online application portal offers you <strong>the</strong> opportunity to log into your personal applicant<br />

portal. In <strong>the</strong> application portal, you are able to check <strong>the</strong> status of your application. In order to do so,<br />

please log into <strong>the</strong> application portal, go to “Application Management” and click on “status” next to <strong>the</strong><br />

application number.<br />

3.2.2 Subsequent documents<br />

Ideally, you send us all <strong>the</strong> requested documents and do not have to send in subsequent documents.<br />

However, if you have already sent your documents in support of an application and want to hand in<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r documents (e.g. your Bachelor’s Degree), you can use <strong>the</strong> form for subsequent documents that<br />

can be downloaded in <strong>the</strong> application portal. Please use this form also if we request for any documents.<br />

You will find <strong>the</strong> form after you have finished your online application if you click on “Application<br />

Management”. Please note: Subsequent documents have to arrive at <strong>the</strong> Admissions Office <strong>by</strong> post<br />

until <strong>the</strong> application deadline, too.<br />

3.2.3 Proof of knowledge of foreign languages<br />

For some of <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes, applicants have to prove a minimum of English language skills.<br />

If you intend to apply for <strong>the</strong> Master Programme “Business Informatics” this requirement is fulfilled if<br />

� you have completed a first degree in English.<br />

� you have acquired a University Entrance Qualification at a school with English as language of<br />

instruction.<br />

If this is not <strong>the</strong> case, students must present one of <strong>the</strong> following test results as proof of language<br />

3.2.4 Proof of German language skills<br />

For some of <strong>the</strong> Master Programmes, applicants have to prove a minimum of German language skills.<br />

The following proofs can be accepted:<br />

a. All-German University Entrance Qualification<br />

b. Completed Degree in a German study programme<br />

If a. or b. are not <strong>the</strong> case, applicants need to pass one of <strong>the</strong> following tests:<br />

� Test DaF, with an average of at least 4 points<br />

� „Deutsche Sprachprüfung zum Hochschulzugang (DSH)“ passed with at least grade 2<br />

(DSH 2)<br />

� German „Sprachdiplom“ of <strong>the</strong> „Kultusministerkonferenz“ (DSD II)<br />

� passed „Feststellungsprüfung“ at a „Studienkolleg“ of a German University or <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Applied Sciences Konstanz<br />

Applicants who can prove one of <strong>the</strong> following qualifications <strong>by</strong> sending in according certificates do not<br />

have to pass one of <strong>the</strong> above-mentioned tests in addition:<br />

� All-German University Entrance Qualification acquired in a state or region having German<br />

as official language<br />

� Completed Degree in a German study programme acquired in a state or region having<br />

German as official language<br />

� „Hochschulreifeprüfung nach der Ordnung der Prüfung zur Erlangung eines Zeugnisses der<br />

Goe<strong>the</strong>-Institute in Germany or abroad before January, 1 st 2012<br />

� „Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom“ or „Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom“ awarded <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

„Goe<strong>the</strong>-Institute“ <strong>by</strong> order of <strong>the</strong> “L.-Maximilians-University Munich passed before January,<br />

1 st 2012<br />

3.2.5 GMAT<br />

If you want to pass a GMAT and you want <strong>the</strong> institution to send <strong>the</strong> result to <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Mannheim please select <strong>the</strong> relevant study programme (e.g. Mannheim Master in Management) and<br />

<strong>the</strong> name of our <strong>university</strong>.<br />

Important: You need to pass <strong>the</strong> GMAT with at least 550 credits. Only <strong>the</strong> „Official Score Report/<br />

School Copy” can be accepted as proof. Please keep in mind that <strong>the</strong> delivery may take several<br />

weeks. The electronic transmission may take up to one week, too.<br />

3.2.6 Proof of extra-curricular qualifications<br />

If you want to prove extra-curricular qualifications in your application, you have to hand in documents<br />

which state your activities and qualifications. You may use <strong>the</strong> form “Certificate of Extracurricular<br />

Qualifications”, which can be found on <strong>the</strong> website www.bewerbung.uni-mannheim.de for download. Of<br />

course, you may also send in records or proofs that you already have obtained <strong>by</strong> e.g. companies.<br />

3.2.7 Letter of Acceptance<br />

Usually, <strong>the</strong> applicants for Master Programmes receive <strong>the</strong>ir decision shortly after <strong>the</strong> close of <strong>the</strong><br />

deadline.<br />

If you expect not to be at home when <strong>the</strong> notifications are delivered, we advise you to have ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

person authorized who may open your post and inform you. Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>information</strong> <strong>about</strong> <strong>the</strong> process of<br />

enrolment could be found in <strong>the</strong> admissions documents.<br />

In general, notifications are sent <strong>by</strong> post. However, applicants may choose to have <strong>the</strong> notification sent<br />

electronically, too.


3.2.8 Exclusion from <strong>the</strong> process<br />

Please note: An Application Form for Admission has to be excluded from <strong>the</strong> admissions process, if<br />

you did not respect <strong>the</strong> deadlines, or if you did not send in all (!) <strong>the</strong> required documents (Section 5<br />

Paragraph 1 University Allocation Regulation). Therefore, please use <strong>the</strong> checklist in <strong>the</strong> appendix of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Application Form to check <strong>the</strong> completeness of your documents! In case of trials concerning<br />

restricted study <strong>programmes</strong>, <strong>the</strong> University of Mannheim reserves <strong>the</strong> right to be represented <strong>by</strong> a<br />

lawyer.<br />

3.2.9 Admission <strong>by</strong> drawing lots<br />

If <strong>the</strong>re are still <strong>university</strong> places left free or have become vacant again at <strong>the</strong> time of completion of <strong>the</strong><br />

allocation process, <strong>the</strong>se places will be allocated <strong>by</strong> drawing lots.<br />

In order to take part in this procedure, you are required to apply separately (detailed <strong>information</strong> on due<br />

time and form are to be found below).<br />

Important: Prospect students who have already applied regularly have to apply separately in<br />

order to be considered! You do not automatically take part in <strong>the</strong> allocation <strong>by</strong> drawing lots!<br />

Applications for this procedure for postgraduate degrees (Master) have to be filed until 15 th August for<br />

<strong>the</strong> fall term and until 1 st February for <strong>the</strong> spring/summer term (provided that <strong>the</strong>re are admissions for<br />

<strong>the</strong> spring/summer term).<br />

1. Form: The application needs to be handed in in written form. For each study programme a separate<br />

application is required. Informal style is sufficient.<br />

2. Necessary documents: The following documents need to be enclosed:<br />

o University Entrance Qualification<br />

o If you have studied in Germany before: certificate disclosing <strong>the</strong> following <strong>information</strong>: amount of<br />

subject-related semesters, academic achievements acquired so far and whe<strong>the</strong>r you are still<br />

entitled to take examinations.<br />

o Certificates proving that <strong>the</strong> relevant requirements for admission are fulfilled according to <strong>the</strong><br />

respective statute of selection of <strong>the</strong> Master Programme.<br />

o Applicants for a higher subject-related semester need to include a certificate of <strong>the</strong> examination<br />

board concerning <strong>the</strong> transfer of credits as well as <strong>the</strong> specific grading into a subject-related<br />

semester for <strong>the</strong> relevant Master Programme. Without this grading, your application cannot be<br />

considered.<br />

3.2.10 Hardship<br />

If you are ei<strong>the</strong>r bound to <strong>the</strong> city of Mannheim or if a fur<strong>the</strong>r delay in beginning your studies cannot be<br />

accepted (e.g. due to health problems, family circumstances or economic reasons) you may apply for<br />

hardship. Please send a letter as well as official proof like medical reports or official certificates.<br />

Supporting documents for a hardship application need to have arrived at <strong>the</strong> Admissions Office <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

end of <strong>the</strong> application period.<br />

4. Fur<strong>the</strong>r Information<br />

4.1 Semester Contribution<br />

If you wish to enrol at <strong>the</strong> University of Mannheim you have to pay <strong>the</strong> semester contribution amounting<br />

to Euro 106.50 (40 Euro administration costs plus 66.50 Euro for <strong>the</strong> Studentenwerk).<br />

More <strong>information</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Semester contribution can be found in <strong>the</strong> matriculation documents.<br />

Please note: For <strong>the</strong> Master of Comparative Law additional costs will arise. For more <strong>information</strong>,<br />

please contact <strong>the</strong> departmental advisory service (see point: 1.5).


4.2 Course Catalogues<br />

The University of Mannheim course catalogue is published a few weeks before <strong>the</strong> start of lectures on<br />

our homepage www.uni-mannheim.de.<br />

Annotated course directories (kommentierte Vorlesungsverzeichnisse) are <strong>offered</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> respective<br />

faculties.<br />

4.4 Studentenwerk (responsible for housing, catering, counselling)<br />

Before you enrol, you have to pay <strong>the</strong> semester contribution. It covers <strong>the</strong> costs of <strong>the</strong><br />

“Studentenwerk”, so that e.g. <strong>the</strong> meals in <strong>the</strong> cafeteria remain affordable. The contribution currently<br />

amounts to 66.50 Euro per semester.<br />

For <strong>information</strong> <strong>about</strong> accomodation, please contact <strong>the</strong> „Wohnraumverwaltung des Studentenwerks<br />

Mannheim“. There are 2.400 places in student residence halls owned <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> „Studentenwerk“.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> „Mensa“, you get good value for your money: <strong>the</strong> subsidised meals are priced from 2.60 Euro<br />

and above; vegetarian options are also available.<br />
