8 HEART Christian newspaper June / July 2020 adverts@heartpublications.co.uk August / September 2020 ADVERTS DEADLINE: 9 July 2020A PROPAGANDA WARSan Remo trumps all subsequent Middle East peace effortsWith the Covid-19 pandemicin danger of blinding usto every other significantdevelopment in the world,we have been jolted back toreality by another crisis thathas lingered unresolved fordecades.The Middle East conflict hascontinued unabated amidst aglobal plague that has struckfear among Israelis and Arabsalike, with Jews even gettingblamed for it by some of theirenemies.Here in Britain, more than 130British politicians have calledfor Israel to be sanctioned ifthey go ahead with proposalsto annex Jewish settlementsin Judea and Samaria – the socalledWest Bank – that is presentlyunder Palestinian Authoritycontrol.The problem is that Westerngovernments have for decadesfollowed the mantra of a ‘twostatesolution’ which would seean Arab nation living peacefullyalongside the Jews. But thisplan, based on the assumptionthat Israel is illegally occupyingthe disputed land, is completelyfake.The idea that ‘Palestinians’were entitled to this land hasevolved over several decadesfrom an anti-Semitic propagandacampaign aimed at delegitimisingthe modern Jewish state,now 72 years old.Jewish connection to theland goes back over 3,000yearsAfter a series of wars designedto destroy Israel failedto achieve that purpose, YasserArafat and others came up withthe idea of resorting to lies andmake-believe to try to convincethe world that the Jews had stolentheir land.This treaty still stands ininternational lawIn truth, Jewish connectionto the land goes back over 3,000years, which was among the keyreasons that world leaders gottogether at San Remo in 1920 toensure they did the right thingby the Jewish people, to whomthey granted all of what was thencalled ‘Palestine’ from the Mediterraneanto the River Jordan.This treaty still stands in internationallaw and Israel has aperfect right to all of Judea, Samaria,East Jerusalem and Gaza– none of which belongs to thePalestinians.It is only because the majorityof Israelis desperately desirepeace that they are repeatedlyprepared to compromise bygiving up land that is rightfullytheirs. Sadly there is clear evidencethat Mahmoud Abbas,Arafat’s successor, will never behappy with any ‘peace plan’ thatinvolves recognition of Israel.Meanwhile President Trumphas drafted his ‘Deal of the Century’– yet he has not includedSan Remo in his equation. Isthis because it had been longforgotten in British governmentarchives?by Charles GardnerShechem (now known as Nablus) in Samaria, is in the Bible and is home to Jacob’s Well and Joseph’sTomb, yet its ownership is disputed today. In fact, the mountains of Samaria represent the heart ofthe land promised to the Jews – both by God himself and the San Remo treatyBritish Prime Minister LloydGeorge fronts the assembledinternational leaders at theSan Remo conference, Italy,in 1920In fact, San Remo – signed acentury ago – trumps all subsequentpeace plans, and if it hadbeen adhered to throughoutthe 1920s, 30s and 40s, the Israeli-Palestinianconflict mightnot have been given sufficientbreath to ignite.For it was never meant tocome to this, with bits of ‘Palestinian’territory here and therewhile politicians are forced tospar over rights to build. Yes,there was Arab opposition 100Charles Gardneryears ago, but an attempt tosolve this problem was madeby Winston Churchill when, in1922, he effected what I wouldcall the original ‘two-state solution’by handing over a swatheof land to one of Britain’s wartimeArab allies. Although somehad hoped the Jews could havethe entire territory, Churchill’saim, as set out in a previousissue of this paper (Feb/Mar 2020), was to fulfil wartimepromises made to the Arabs andto create a buffer state betweenthe Jews and their neighbours,who were already sending overraiding parties.This land became known asTrans-Jordan (now simply Jordan).It was no doubt well intended,for Churchill was always afriend of Israel, but the Arabswere still not happy, which iswhy the United Nations offereda ‘Partition Plan’ in 1947, dividingand reducing Israeli territoryin clear breach both of God’sWord and the San Remo Treaty,also seen as Israel’s ‘earthlydeed’ to the land.And yet even this generousoffer was rejected by the Arabs,who subsequently went to waragainst the new Jewish state,during which conflict Jordan illegallyannexed Judea, Samariaand East Jerusalem.But when Israel’s enemieseventually realised that theJewish state could not be defeatedby military means, a propagandawar was launched for thepurpose of creating a non-existent‘Palestinian’ people andstate. The rest is history – muchof it re-written, airbrushed oreven invented.Jordan’s annexation of muchof Israel’s biblical heartland(which was renamed ‘the WestBank’) was recognised by onlytwo countries in the world – Pakistanand (shamefully) Britain– whereas Israel’s proposed annexationonly of parts of theseterritories elicits a cacophony ofabuse from many quarters.Those who divide the land ofGod’s “treasured possession”(Psalm 135:4) will reap the judgmentof the Lord.
