We’ve already given customers’ personal

information to Kelni GVG – Vodafone

VODAFONE

GHANA has admitted

having already

given the

personal information

of its

over 10 million subscribers to

Kelni GVG.

The personal information includes

(but not limited to) subscribers’

names, mobile phone

numbers, call records, call locations

and addresses and mobile

money transaction details.

The admission came out at the

hearing of a case which was

brought by a private legal practitioner,

Mr Francis Kwarteng

Arthur, to challenge the constitutionality

of the President’s Executive

Instrument No. 63 (EI 63).

The President issued EI 63

which asked all telecommunication

companies to forward all subscribers’

personal information to

him for Covid-19 contact-tracing

purposes.

According to EI 63, the personal

information is to help “trace

all contacts of persons suspected

or actually affected by a public

health emergency and identify the

places visited by persons suspected

of or actually affected by a

public health emergency.”

However, the lawyers for Mr

Francis Arthur have argued in

their written address to the

Human Rights Court that “ per

the EI 63, the President’s directive

in it and its implementation by the

Respondents have violated, are violating

or are likely to violate my

fundamental human rights to administrative

justice, privacy; and

equality or non-discrimination.”

Meanwhile, MTN, which has

sternly refused to release the personal

information of their subscribers,

has argued in their

affidavit that the request for subscribers’

personal information

“constituted a disproportionate

invasion of privacy” and that “the

request had absolutely no nexus

with the purpose” of Covid-19

contact-tracing.

The Acting CEO of Kelni

GVG, Ms Rouba Habboushi, has

since denied ever making a request

for the personal details from

Vodafone or any other telecommunication

company.

“ Kelni GVG has made no

such demand on the 1st and 2nd

Respondent or any other communication

network operator or service

provider,” she deposed in her

Affidavit to the court.

The National Communication

Authority, the regulatory agency

charged with the mandate to supervise

the implementation of EI

63 and which is a defendant in the

suit, has failed to file a defence in

the matter.

The trial judge, Mr. Justice

Stephen Oppong, has fixed June

23, 2020 for his ruling on Mr

Francis Kwarteng’s application for

an order of interlocutory injunction.

Mr Justice Oppong was appointed

by the President earlier

this year.

The case was transferred from

the Human Rights Court division

to him in General Jurisdiction division

of the High Court.

Prof. Mills’s cousin dashes govt children’s ward

BY KWEKU GYASI ESSEL,

AJUMAKO/ ENYAN DENKYIRA

A BUSINESSMAN has handed over a children’s

ward to the management of Ajumako

District Hospital at Ajumako, the

capital of the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam

(AEE) District.

A short ceremony was held at Ajumako

on Friday, June 5, 2020, to open the ward

and subsequently hand it over to

the hospital management

and, for that matter, the

government.

Narrating what

motivated him to

build the children’s

ward,

Ebusuapanyin

Kwesi

Tweiku,

known in

private life

and the

Ghanaian

business circles

as Uncle

Siisi Crentsil,

said he once

learnt of water

problems at the

hospital and so provided

boreholes there.

The citizen of Enyan

Denkyira and cousin of Prof

John Evans Atta Mills, the late President

of Ghana, said during his visits to the hospital

while providing the boreholes, he

learnt again that the health facility did not

have a children’s ward and that “the situation

undermined healthcare for sick children

who needed to be detained for thorough

care.”

“I took it upon myself to build one for

the hospital because it may delay to come

even if the government would provide it

because the government had so much to

provide.

“My over-riding motivation to build the

ward is that my mother loved children such

that even though she herself gave birth to

15 children, she always sought opportunity

to care for other children and that spirit has

grown in me, hence my enthusiasm

to build this ultramodern

edifice,

which I dedicate

to

our

late

mother,

Efua

Crentsil,” Siisi

Crentsil said.

He added that, “My mother always

advised me that good name is better

than riches and so I should pursue good

name in all my endeavours. I am hopeful

she would be very glad today resting in the

and Ebusuapanyin Kwesi Tweiku (Sisi Crentsil) to open the Etsifi

Asona Palace at Enyan Denkyira

bosom of our father Abraham, witnessing

and admiring this special occasion on

which the a children’s ward is being dedicated

to her.”

Before he ended his speech, he appealed

to people with financial strength to

provide social amenities in their communities

to support the government’s efforts in

improving the lives of the people.

Siisi Crentsil said it cost him GHc600,

000 to build the ward and provide the facilities

in it, including beds, babies’ cots and

television sets, with the block itself having

such physical facilities as the main ward,

Paediatric Emergency Area, a Nurses’

Room, washrooms and an open space for

general but important routines.

Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, the Paramount

Chief of the Abeadze Traditional

Area in the Central Region and Vice President

of National House of Chiefs cut the

tape to mark the opening of the edifice, assisted

by Osabarima Otsibu VII, the Paramount

Chief of Enyan Denkyira

Traditional Area.

He also unveiled a plaque and a picture

of Siisi Crentsil’s mother , Efua Crentsil, to

whom the ward has been dedicated.

Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi appealed to

citizens of the various communities to contribute

to development in their traditional

areas to help develop the entire nation.

Other speakers at the ceremony were

Cassiel Ato Forson, Member of Parliament

for AEE Constituency; Rev Ransford

Kwesi Nyarkoh, the District Chief Executive

for the area; and Mr Emmanuel Taadi,

the Deputy Director (Administration) of

the Central Regional Directorate of the

Ghana Health Service.

All of them, as well as Daasebre

Kwebu Ewusi, commended Siisi Crentsil

for his love to see improved healthcare,

with Ato Forson making a commitment

that “I also will see what I can provide”

and Rev Nyarkoh saying, “I am operating

an open-door administration so far as development

is concerned. I don’t see party

colours once you are in to help develop our

district.”

Mr Taadi appealed to the management

of the Ajumako hospital to take good care

of the ward and also appealed to the people

in the area to take their children’s education

seriously so that “one day, we can get

some of these children trained as health

professionals to take care of health issues

of their own people.”

Dignitaries at the ceremony were Mr

Samuel Atta Mills, the MP for Komenda

Edina Eguafo Abrem constituency; the

hospital management, including Madam

Priscilla Darko-Yawson; the district police

commander; and traditional leaders such as

Adontsenhen Okumanyi Eduah I, Ebusuapanyin

Atta Dennison, Ebusuapanyin Yaw

Eduah, and Ebusuapanyin Kwame Aidoo,

all of Enyan Denkyira. Others included

Obahemaa Adwoa Beduwa Anaafua I,

Nana Danfo Anaful I, and Augustine

Arhinful, an ex-Black Stars player, as well as

Dr George Jojo Crentsil and David

Crentsil, both siblings of Siisi Crentsil and

retired top public servants.

After the Ajumako ceremony, the dignitaries

and others like the media personnel

left for another ceremony for the opening

of a palace built for the Etsifi Asona clan

of Enyan Denkyira by the same Uncle Siisi

Crentsil, who is the leader of the clan with

the name Ebusuapanyin Kwesi Tweiku.

The palace was also opened by Daasebre

Kwebu Ewusi.

Akufo-Addo fingered

in uniBank takeover

BY MUNTALLA INUSAH

muntalla.inusah@dailyheritage.com.gh

IT IS recalled that Dr Kwabena

Duffuor’s uniBank made an announcement

on March 7, 2018 to

the effect that a consortium of financial

institutions had pledged

their shares, proceeds, entitlements

and voting rights to uniBank to

make it the majority shareholder in

ADB.

These financial institutions included:

Belstar Capital, a turnkey project finance

implementation institution, Starmount

Development Company Limited,

EDC Investments Limited and SIC-Financial

Services.

Interestingly, in just a few hours, on

the same day, Wednesday 7, 2018, the

Bank of Ghana (BoG), in a rather swift

response to this announcement, denounced

as null and void the purported

takeover of ADB. The BoG further explained

that the decision by these shareholders

leading to the alleged takeover

was not sanctioned by the BoG. Therefore,

the takeover was null and void.

On March 20, 2018, the BoG, in a

press release, announced the takeover of

uniBank and immediately appointed

KPMG as the official administrator of

the bank. The regulator quoted sections

107 and 108 of the Banks and Specialized

Deposit-Taking Institutions Act,

2016 (Act 930) to back its decision.

In our June/July 2020 Edition, the

AfricaWatch Magazine has done a comprehensive

special report on uniBank and its

takeover by the BoG. We have found, among

other things, that uniBank was deliberately

destroyed on political grounds, knowing that

Congress member, needed to be

Below are details of the new

brought down.

Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s

Minister of Finance and

cousin of President Akufo-

Addo, Dr Ernest Addison,

Governor of BoG and Nii

Amanor Dodoo, the appointed

Administrator on behalf

of the receiver (KPMG),

colluded to collapse one of

Ghana’s successful indigenous

banks (uniBank).

The report also notes,

among other points, the coordinated

decisions from the

Ministry of Finance to BoG

and finally the Receiver,

KPMG, to get what it describes

as political deal executed

according to plan. All of

these decisions meant to frustrate

the board of directors

and shareholders of uniBank.

For instance, it says that

the BoG acted against the rule

of thumb in Ghana’s banking

industry by singling out uni-

Bank to carry out unannounced

and unplanned

monthly

audit. Meanwhile the

law allows the BoG to

carry out planned auditing

of banks once

every year, a duty the

central had a timetable

for and had judiciously

carried out for years.

The international

Magazine stumbled

upon audit reports

that revealed that between

May and October

2017, the BoG,

through its Banking

Supervision Department,

sent four audit

teams to uniBank,

three of these visits

unannounced.

They teams in

turns audited and

downgraded uniBank’s

loan books, making its

Capital Adequacy

Ratio worse.

Curiously, the

fourth audit team

downgraded even the

government and its

agencies indebtedness

to uniBank. This gave the impression

that the government

could not be trusted and not

solvent enough to pay its

debts to uniBank.

Ghana Government and

its allied agencies’ indebtedness

to uniBank amounted to

about GHc1 billion, an

amount, when paid to the

bank, will raise its Capital Adequacy

Ratio, to make it solvent

to escape the BoG

hunting.

uniBank needed to recapitalize.

So, if the government and

its quasi-bodies had paid their

indebtedness to uniBank, the

bank would not have needed

any capital injection from the

BoG to remain solvent, the

report said.

Africawatch notes that the

decision by the BoG to swiftly

announce the takeover of uni-

Bank due to its insolvency

when the BoG itself owes the

bank a whopping

GHc19,781,376.00 is curious,

if not ironical.

The magazine can claim

that this is why the BoG and

its appointing authorities

would not take the request

made by uniBank to pay its indebtedness

and make it

stronger because the decision

to bring Dr Duffuor down

was planned.

Lawyer petitions Vodafone Group UK

Over claims of privacy breaches by

Vodafone Ghana

MR FRANCIS

Kwarteng

Arthur, the

lawyer who has

dragged the

President, the

National Communication Authority,

Kelni GVG, Vodafone Ghana

and MTN to court over alleged privacy

right violations, has petitioned

Vodafone Ghana’s mother company

– the Vodafone Group UK –

over such violations.

According to Mr Arthur’s solicitors,

Archbridge Solicitors, the petition

was necessitated by the

“nonchalant posturing” of Vodafone

Ghana in the middle of the

most extensive threat to privacy

rights in Ghana’s history and one

of the most extensive in the world.

“While other telecommunication

networks or service providers,

like MTN, have vehemently contested

the request as overly disproportionate

or even irrelevant to the

stated purpose and, thereby, a

threat to subscribers’ right to privacy,

your Ghana office has, at

best, remained completely silent

and unconcerned about the issue,”

the petition states in its paragraph

2(e).

It may be recalled that the President

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-

Addo issued an Executive

Instrument (EI 63) in March 2020,

in which he directed all telecommunication

networks or service

providers (including Vodafone

Ghana) to supply the personal information

of subscribers to him

through Kelni GVG, a private

company.

will be used to “trace all contacts

of persons suspected or actually affected

and identify the places

visited by persons suspected of or

emergency”.

However, Mr Arthur has challenged

the President’s order in the

EI as a violation of the rights of

subscribers to privacy since “the

President’s choice of such a disproportionate

measure to address the

purpose of contact tracing is, with

the greatest respect, unreasonable.”

This was contained in the suit he

brought to the Human Rights

Court, Accra, in April, 2020.

Similarly, the telecommunication

giant, MTN, holds the view that

the request that was made on them

“constituted a disproportionate invasion

of privacy” as the request

has “absolutely no nexus with the

purpose” of Covid-19 contacttracing.

The lawyers have given an ultimatum

to Vodafone Group UK to

get Vodafone Ghana to not only

speak to the allegation or address

the issues.

“We wish to notify you (and notice

is hereby given) that should

you, within 14 days of receiving

this letter, fail to commit, unequivocally,

to meeting all the above demands,

we shall, without further

recourse to you, proceed and resort

to other lawful avenues for resolving

others, of remedying any injuries

that the conduct of Vodafone may

cause to our Client,” the lawyers

advised.

FEAR HAS gripped

nurses and other workers

at the Ogbojo Polyclinic

at East Legon in

Accra because some

senior staff members

who have tested positive for

Covid-19 at the facility are reportedly

still reporting for duty.

According to Starrfm.com.gh

sources, six senior staff members

who have contracted the virus

have not self-isolated or been directed

to do so by the hospital.

Multiple sources told

Starrfm.com.gh that a medical officer,

a midwife, the supply officer

and a nursing officer are among

those hit by the virus.

A management member at the

hospital who spoke to

Starrfm.com.gh on condition of

anonymity on Monday (yesterday)

confirmed the cases but said he

was unable to offer details.

Meanwhile, President Nana

Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has

confirmed that Ghana’s Health

Minister, Mr KwakuAgyeman-

Media reports on Saturday

noted the minister had contracted

the virus and was being treated at

the University of Ghana Medical

Centre in Accra.

Addressing Ghanaians in his

11th national address since the

Covid-19 pandemic, the President

said the minister was in a stable

condition.

“Let us also wish our hardworking

Pay attention to your health

• Prez tells Ghanaians

IN THE midst of exponential

increase in the number

of Covid-19 cases in the

country, President Nana

Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

has encouraged Ghanaians

to pay critical attention to their

health.

The President urged all and

sundry to seek immediate medical

attention if they start to experience

certain health conditions, including

cold, high temperature, as

well as sore throat.

In his 11th televised address to

the nation, Nana Akufo-Addo

said there is nothing shameful

about testing positive.

“We do not have to lose our

sense of community because of

this pandemic," he said.

Nana Akufo-Addo said,

“When you begin to experience

symptoms such as fever, persistent

cough, bodily pains, loss of taste

and smell, and difficulty in breathing,

seek immediate medical attention

at the nearest health facility."

He condemned those who

keep shunning people who have

recovered from Covid-19 because,

as he explained, their actions undermined

the country's effort to

fight Covid-19.

The President noted, "Government,

through the Ghana Health

Service, continues to monitor, on

a daily basis, the spread of the

virus, and has benchmarks of

health outcomes, which define

the mitigation measures that must

be pursued to curb the spread of

the disease, and enable us to reassess

the easing of restrictions."

He reminded residents of the

Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions,

where the majority of cases

have been recorded, and in the

Western and Central Regions,

where there are increasing infections,

"to continue to adhere

strictly to the social distancing

and enhanced hygiene protocols

announced”.

“Our survival is in our own

hands,” Akufo-Addo said.

We are still marrying Volta - Keta MCE

THE MUNICIPAL Chief Executive

(MCE) for Keta, Mr Godwin

Edudzi Yao Effah, has said the

New Patriotic Party (NPP) government

“is still marrying Volta

Region," with "development

reaching every corner," including

hard-to-reach areas.

He said the Assembly made

great strides in sectors such as education,

health, trade, agriculture

and roads with remote communities

having their fair share of the

projects, indicating the party's

'love' for the region.

Mr Effah, at a press soiree

held at the Keta Municipal Assembly

Hall, showcased the Assembly’s

performance in

implementing government’s policies

and programmes.

“We have as our $1 million per

Constituency, the District Performance

Assessment (DPAT)

and the District Assembly Common

Fund (DACF) targets for

2020 the rehabilitation at

Asadame Health Centre, construction

of a six-seater water

closet at Tsiame E.P. Basic

School, construction of 22m concrete

bridge at Agorvinu and construction

of a three-unit

classroom block each at Sasieme,

Aborlove-Nolopi and Lawoshime

among other projects,” he said.

The MCE said, “These are

some communities you must park

cars and walk for about two hours

to reach and that tells you our

government is committed to

reaching every part of the municipality

and the region with development

to impact people’s lives.”

classroom block at KETASCO,

construction of culvert at

Havedzi and rehabilitation of old

PWD yard at Keta to house some

departments in the Municipality

among other projects done within

the period.

Mr Effah touched on some social

intervention programmes,

saying, “a few weeks ago, we had

the privilege to distribute working

tools/items, including irrigation

machines, industrial, knitting and

hand sewing machines, wheelbarrows

and cash, all totalling over

GH 30,000.00 to a number of

persons with disabilities.”

On the Assembly’s management

of the Covid-19 pandemic,

the MCE said it undertook activities,

including mounting barriers

at Abor, Havedzi and

KETABUSCO Junction to check

travellers.

He said the Assembly was running

public education campaign

on radio and distribution of various

Covid-19 personal protective

equipment and hand-washing stations.

The MCE said some of the interventions

were financed from

the GH 50,000.00 released from

the Ministry of Local Government

and Rural Development and

said the Assembly was expecting

some GH 166,000.00 for Covid-

19-related infrastructure to contain

the spread of the disease.

Parliament sending

wrong signals — ACEPA

•Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye Junior,

Speaker of Parliament

THE AFRICA Centre for Parliamentary

Affairs (ACEPA) says Parliament

has failed to provide

leadership in the midst of the

COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

This comes on the back of the

revelation by Majority leader Osei

Kyei Mensah Bonsu that some MPs,

staff and journalists who have tested

positive for the virus are still reporting

to work. This is in defiance of

the safety protocols which require

them to self-isolate.

Speaker of Parliament, Professor

Aaron Mike Ocquaye, has consequently

ordered another round of

mandatory Covid-19 testing for

those who could not be captured by

the first two exercises. He stated that

whoever fails to get tested will not

be admitted to the premises of Parliament.

Speaking on Starr Today on Friday

June 12, 2020, Executive Director

of the Africa Centre for

Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr

Rasheed Draman said the latest development

in Parliament sent the

wrong communication to the populace.

“It sends all the wrong signals.

You tell us, citizens, ‘observe social

distancing; when you have the virus

self-isolate’. People are coming into

the country that are infected and are

quarantined, so on and so forth.

And then we have Members of Parliament

who have the virus and they

are not self-isolating, they are not

being quarantined just so as to avoid

the spread of the virus. I mean it’s

sad…”

Dr Draman reminded the legislators

of the havoc Covid-19 is wreaking

in Burundi, East Africa, where

its president Pierre Nkurunziza is

rumoured to have died after contracting

coronavirus but the rumours

have not been confirmed as

government officials there emphasize

that Mr. Nkurunziza died of

cardiac arrest.

“Look at what is happening in

Burundi right now. They were joking

with the virus and their president is

gone. We understand a lot of the

leadership (has been affected). There

are rumours and, of course, we are

going to know that very soon. This

is a very serious virus and I think if

our leaders think it’s something to

joke about, well…,” Dr Draman

told Starr News Naa Dedei Tettey.

He added that the house should

consider holding virtual meetings or

running shifts as it’s happening in

other parts of the world to contain

the spread, warning that an increase

in cases in the legislature could spell

doom for the country’s democracy.

A plethora of reactions from

various interest groups, including

the Ghana Medical Association,

have been pouring in since the Minister

for Parliamentary Affairs made

the disclosure.

Communal spirit brings development

COMMUNAL LIVING has been a

feature of the Ghanaian culture for

time immemorial.

In its true sense, communal living

is the situation where members of

the community are each other’s

keeper such that others, for example,

provide for relatives and other people,

including even strangers living

among the natives.

It could be recalled that in times

past some would build and everyone

having the opportunity to live in that

house called it “our house” without

any reference to the one who used

his or her money to put up the house

and without the builder getting hurt

at all.

By that practice, those who did

not have the financial muscle to put

up a house or take care of certain

things did not worry much because

nobody looked down upon them. In

situations where certain individuals

were sick, for example, relatives and

other members of the community

gave help in seeing to the persons’

healthcare or healing.

It was the time natives loved

going back home occasionally to see

their loved ones and share moments

of joy with them.

Those who grew up in the rural

areas, for instance, would recall moments

of relatives or mere community

members living in big towns and

elsewhere, upon their occasional visits,

going from home to home greeting

especially elderly members of

the community and giving them gifts

and money.

It was the time the community

practised the norm that only a

woman carries a pregnancy, but her

child, once born, was everyone’s

child and relative. Therefore, all adult

members must help to bring the

child up to be a good member of the

community.

The narrative can go on and on

but the truth is that the communal

spirit has almost died and given way

to individualism, which is why the

DAILY HERITAGE is impressed

that the cousin of Prof JEA Mills,

Uncle Siisi Crentsil, also known as

Ebusuapanyin Kwesi Tweiku, has

done the unexpected by building a

children’s ward for the Ajumako

District Hospital and also a whole

palace for his Etsifi Asona clan of

Enyan Denkyira (See story on front

page).

Uncle Siisi Crentsil and others like

him give us hope that the communal

spirit has not completely died and

that where it has even died, it can be

resurrected.

This is because since it is now

public knowledge and touted by

even the politicians, development

agents, that the government cannot

develop communities all alone, it

would take the communal spirit of

particularly those who hail from the

rural areas to assess and deliver

amenities that can improve the lives

of their compatriots.

Let us all be influenced by the

communal spirit of examplars like

Siisi Crentsil to bring some joy to

those who have lost hope because

they have no one in particular to

turn to when in need. Bravo,

Ebusuapanyin, for your selflessness!

BY PHILIP ANTOH

THE REGIS-

TRAR of Kumasi

Technical University,

Mr Ebenezer

Kofi Boakye, has

stated that his institution

sees Covid-19 as a war

and therefore is marshaling all arsenals

to fight the pandemic.

According to him, management

of the university has set up Covid-

19 Management Team to monitor

the situation when school reopens

for the final-year students, adding

that the institution was procuring

being temperature guns or infrared

thermometers to test the temperatures

of students before they can

enter the school.

Mr Boakye made this known

when Zoomlion Ghana Limited

last Thursday embarked on the

second phase of the exercise to

disinfect the educational institution,

including students’ hostels,

ahead of reopening of schools for

final students, starting June 15.

•Mr Ebenezer Kofi Boakye, Registrar, Kumasi Technical University,

speaking to newsmen at the entrance to the university

He said measures such as provision

of Veronica buckets, installation

of automatic sanitizers by

all doors, online programmes and

asking all final-year students

whose exams does not need practical

work to stay at home as some

of the safety protocols initiated by

the school.

The registrar said the first exercise

by Zoomlion cleared the

school of all rodents, reptiles and

insects “so this second one is

going to make the place safe for

living.”

“If we go by the safety protocols

instituted by the government,

we can now live normal in what

we call a new normal situation

with Covid-19 until we get vaccines

to fight it,” he stated.

Mr Boakye implored the students

to be disciplined, respect

each other and also follow all the

safety protocols because “we

know how the youth behave and

in this new normal situation, their

behaviour must change.”

He thanked Zoomlion Ghana

Limited for taking up the challenge

of fumigating and disinfecting

to protect the lives of Ghanaians

through the nationwide exercise.

The Relations Officer of the

university, Dr Charles Obeng Sarpong,

said the management was

expecting over 3000 final-year students

on reopening day, June 15,

2020.

He said measures were in place

to ensure that students would sit,

at least, one meter apart, adding

that the school would manufacture

a hand sanitizer for use by the

school and its immediate community;

education materials would be

manufactured and strict enforcement

of wearing of nose mask

without which no entry would be

granted anyone.

The General Manager of

Zoomlion, Ashanti East, Mr

Franklin Ofori Akuffo, said the

exercise was taking place in 20 tertiary

institutions in the Ashanti

Region.

Mr Akuffo said the exercise in

Kumasi Techincal University

would cover over 100 classrooms

at the main campus before extending

it to students hostels.

In related development, the

disinfection exercise was extended

to the campuses of the Kwame

Nkrumah University where facilities

such as Queen Elizabeth Hall,

Pharmacy, Law School and hostels

were all disinfected to ensure the

safety of the students.

The University Relations Officer,

Dr Daniel Morris Tetteh, said

the institution was expecting over

1500 final-year medical, nursing

and veterinary students while the

rest would continue using the online

platforms.

The Health and Safety Officer

of Zoomlion, Northern Sector,

Mr Wilson Appianti, said the objective

of the company was to disinfect

various halls of residency

for students, lecture halls, offices

and other facilities to pave the way

for the reopening of the school

for final-year students.

rumours that he has endorsed

Micheal Okyere Baafi,

Chief Executive Officer of Ghana

the ruling New Patriotic

Kasapa News has gathered that

some Chiefs in the traditional area

were influenced to convince some

by the Gyaasehene of New

Juaben, Nana Twumasi Darkwa,

on behalf of the Omanhene,

and without merit”.

“Firstly, it is against the tenet of

the constitution for Chiefs to

openly endorse, identify with political

parties, and by extension endorse

a candidate to an election on

the platform of political parties.

Second, the Omanhene’s Palace is

open to all and so by just entering

the palace cannot be construed as

an endorsement by the Omanhene.”

He added that “as a Paramount

Chief, it is my responsibility not

only to safeguard the dignity and

sanctity of the institution of

Chieftaincy, but also to ensure that

Chieftaincy become the rallying

Otumfuo’s ban on player recruitment will

bring out the best in Maxwell Konadu

•J.E Sarpong observes

FORMER KOTOKO

Coach, Josef Emmanuel

(JE) Sarpong, has applauded

Asantehene for

banning player transfer at

Kotoko, insisting it will

bring the best out of Coach Maxwell

Konadu.

“The good thing about this whole

decision too is that it will always

bring out the experience in Coach

Maxwell Konadu and it’s time for

him to show the world what he is

made of ”, he added.

The Asantehene, who is the

owner and life patron of the club, has

instructed the new board not to sign

new players for a year, a decision that

former coach of the club sees as a

good one, for which he has highly

•Coach J.E. Sarpong

commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“Kotoko registered more than

necessary players; I don’t know the

figure though, but I learnt it is

around 50 players or something and

how many are selected for a game?

“It’s only 18 and the rest from the

rest, what are they doing? That’s why

in Europe they register not more

than 25 players.

“Every year they buy so many

players and they are all on salary but

they won’t even use them, so it all

comes at a huge disadvantage to the

club financially. So, for me, I support

the call by Otumfuo to place a ban

on player recruitment for, at least,

one season,” Sarpong told Starr

Sports .

Meanwhile the former spokesperson

for Asante Kotoko, Kennedy

Boakye Ansah, has revealed that the

great work done by Dr. Kwame Kyei

at the club contributed to Otumfuo’s

decision to extend his mandate.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu this month

entrusted Asante Kotoko into the

hands of Dr Kwame Kyei for a second

time after retaining him as Executive

Chairman of the club.

Dr Kyei’s three-year mandate

ended in December 2019, but he has

been retained after a three-member

committee concluded their investigation

into the club’s affairs under his

tenure. Speaking on Extra Time over

the weekend, Boakye Ansah insisted

the man did a good job [for him] to

be retained.

“If I should review the past

three years, the mandate of Dr.

Kwame Kyei as the Executive Chairman

then, I will say that the man did

a great job.

“ At least, almost every trophy at

hand then that Kotoko competed for,

they won it -- that’s, the FA Cup [and]

the NC cup -- so I am saying that on

the field of play, Kotoko was extremely

competitive,” Boakye Ansah

told Starr Sports .

“Off the field, we are talking

about the corporate structure of the

club; yes, people had fault here and

there but if you have a huge brand

like MTN as your headline sponsor

and they felt the need to renew their

relationship with you, that means

you were doing something good,” he

added

US Open:

Serena Williams would 'love to play'

in New York-----Coach

SERENA WILLIAMS "would

love to play" at the US Open,

says her coach Patrick

Mouratoglou.

Williams, 38, had an injurystrewn

2019 but recovered to

reach the final of last year's

tournament in New York.

The 2020 US Open is due to

start on August 31 with strict

restrictions in place because of

coronavirus.

"She's definitely come back

to tennis to win Grand Slams,

that's her goal," Mouratoglou

told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme.

"For a player to be out of

competition is extremely difficult.

So, the US Open will be a

first opportunity to win one.

There'll be a lot of restrictions

and I have to speak with her to

see if she will be able to accept

and manage those expectations."

The former world number

one and six-time US Open

champion, who went out of the

Australian Open in the third

round in January, started the

year by winning the Auckland

Open -- her first singles title

since becoming a mother in

September 2017.

Players, including Novak

Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Nick

Kyrgios and Simona Halep,

•Serena Williams

have voiced their reservations

about staging this year's event at

Flushing Meadows, which could

run without supporters or the

media.

World number one

Djokovic called the proposed

protocols "extreme", while

Nadal said he had "little desire"

to travel to New York.

It is expected that players

will only be permitted to have

one person to accompany them

throughout the tournament,

which Mouratoglou says could

be an issue for Williams, who

prefers to travel with her

daughter, Alexis.

"I don't imagine her being

three weeks without her daughter,"

he said.

He jokingly added: "So, she

might have a new coach for the

US Open, a bit younger. Considering

our record in the last

seven finals, her daughter might

be more successful than me."

WTA and ATP Tour events

are suspended until the end of

July, at the earliest.

Naa Odofoley, Habiba Attah

appointed to re-brand

women's football

A MEMBER of the erstwhile

Normalisation Committee, Naa

Odofoley Nortey (Esq), and Executive

Council member, Madam

Habiba Attah Forson, have been

tasked to come up with a comprehensive

policy document on

women's football.

The decision was taken on Friday,

June 12, 2020, during a meeting

of the national teams

department led by Deputy General

Secretary Alex Asante; the

Black Queens Management Committee

member; and GFA President

Kurt E.S. Okraku.

They have two weeks to come

up with a draft that will be considered

and approved by the Executive

Council.

This is part of the GFA’s efforts

to put in place a detailed

plan to change the narrative on

women's football by making it attractive

to the corporate world

and to draw eyeballs to the brand.

The policy is to also focus on

improving visibility, packaging

and branding. The document,

when delivered, will go a long way

to change the existing narrative

and mindset about women’s football

in Ghana.

Okraku says he believes these

vital areas need to be looked at

holistically to serve as a policy

guideline for women’s football

when adopted. He opines its implementation

must start from the

grass-roots level, club level, and

transcend to the various women

national teams.
