Michael Kosak — From Brooklyn to the Virgin IslandsA Brooklyn-born priest, who has beenserving in the Virgin Islands for 50 years,is marking the 50th anniversary of hisordination.Msgr. Michael F. Kosak, the pastor ofSt. Ann Church in St. Croix, Virgin Islands,was baptized in St. Brigid’s Church,Bushwick, and attended St. John’sSchool, Rockaway Park, and Boys H.S.,Brooklyn, before joining the U.S. MarineCorps.After four years with the Marines, hebegan working in public relations forThe Title Guarantee and Trust Co. andas a counselor at St. John’s Residence,Rockaway Park, while studying at St.John’s University. He received hisbachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s Collegein Kentucky, and entered St. Mary’sSeminary, Baltimore.He was ordained as the first priestfor the Prelature of the Virgin Islandson June 6, 1970, by Bishop Edward J.Harper, CSSR, at Our Lady of PerpetualHelp Basilica, Brooklyn.Following ordination, he served aspastor of St. Ann’s Church, BarrenspotHill, St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Healso directed the Vocations Office,Charismatic Renewal, Office ofthe Permanent Diaconate, andCommunications.From 1981 to 1987, he was EpiscopalVicar for St. Croix and then served asVicar General.In 1989, he was appointed as pastor ofSS. Peter and Paul Cathedral. St. Thomas,VI. He also was spiritual director of theRegional Seminary, St. John Vianney/Martyrs of Uganda Mt. St. Benedict,Trinidad, West Indies.In 1995, he became pastor of St.Ann’s, St. Croix, and began constructionof SS. Joachim and Ann Church whilerenovating an old sugar mill as the Shrineof Our Lady of Barrenspot.In 2005, he was appointed as VicarGeneral for the Diocese of St. Thomas.When St. Thomas Bishop George Murrybecame Bishop of Youngstown, Ohio,Msgr. Kosak was named ApostolicAdministrator for St. Thomas until theappointment of Bishop Herbert A. Bevard.Msgr. Kosak continued in his role asvicar general until 2013. He was nameda Monsignor in 1989, and in 2010, hereceived the papal honor of ProtonotaryApostolic.In 2014, he retired but continuedto serve as a diocesan consultorand advisor for health care, propertyinsurance, and pension issues.In 2019, he was reappointed as pastorof St. Ann, St. Croix.The Memoirs of Msgr.
