Catholic Schools

Places to Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed

by Dr. Thomas Chadzutko, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Brooklyn

Dear Parents and

Guardians of Catholic

Academy and Parish

School Students,

I truly hope you

and your children

found time this summer

to rest, connect,

pray, and prepare for

Dr. Chadzutko

what will be a very

different school year.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our

lives in immeasurable ways. While it is difficult

to predict what the future will look like, your

Catholic Academies and Parish Schools have

been hard at work and are ready to implement

plans to return to school with enhanced health

and safety measures, based on guidance from

local health and government authorities.

According to the Center for Disease Control

and Prevention (CDC), aside from a child’s

home, there is no other setting which has more

of an influence on a child’s health and well-being

than their Catholic Academy or Parish

School. The in-person school environment provides

academic instruction; supports the development

of social and emotional skills; creates

a safe environment for learning; addresses nutritional

needs; and facilitates physical activity.

School leaders have been working tirelessly

to develop plans for the safe return of as many

students as possible, to in-person school, in

order to best meet students’ academic, social-emotional

and faith-based needs. Teachers

have bee working on development of lesson

plans which will continue to use technology as

the basis for instruction. Both principals and

teachers have participated in professional development

programs.

The health and safety of the children and

adults in our Catholic Academies and Parish

Schools is paramount. Health and safety considerations

must always come first in every decision

made and every action taken by our Catholic

Academies and Parish Schools throughout

the Diocese of Brooklyn. In planning for the

re-opening, our goal is to establish best practices

for ensuring a healthy and safe return

to school. Students and staff in our Catholic

Academies and Parish Schools will receive

training to ensure the proper practice of the 4

basic tenants to support a healthy environment:

1. Stay home if sick

2. Keep social distance

3. Keep hands clean

4. Wear a face covering

We all share a goal to provide children the

best educational experience possible, and to

give parents the choice to send their children

back to school or keep them at home based on

personal decisions and health related circumstances.

Stay Home

if Sick

Only leave for essential

medical care and testing or

other essential errands.

To serve this goal, and support in partnership

with your home academies and parish schools,

we have established the St Thomas Aquinas

Distance Learning Program.

This 100% distance learning option is to ensure

instructional excellence by allowing teachers

to provide focused attention and differentiated

pedagogy to solely remote students. In

turn, this provides the in-class teachers to focus

completely on the needs and safety measures

for those that are in the classroom. The teaching

methods for in-class and distance learning

are different, and both need responsive awareness.

The formation of the dedicated distance

learning Catholic program allows the appointed

teachers to focus on the at-home students, utilize

expertise, best practices, tools, and pedagogy

for distance learning. This model is designed

to support the wellbeing and outcomes

for all students, and the teachers involved.

We are enormously proud and grateful for

the teachers and their commitment to distance

learning, and to their students that will be headed

back to the classrooms on September 9th.

We recognize the efforts of our Pastors to

support the re-opening plans of the Catholic

Academies and Parish by working collaboratively

to utilize every available space on the parish

footprint.

We appreciate the work of all our principals

who worked throughout the entire summer to

develop and now implement a re-opening plan

that ensures quality Catholic education in a

safe and healthy environment.

We applaud all of our teachers, as they have

not only implemented a distance learning model

in the spring of 2020 but no look to implementing

new teaching methodologies focusing

on continued health and safety measures in the

classrooms.

We thank our parents for your partnership

and patience, as we continue to navigate these

extraordinary times.

In preparation for a safe re-opening of our

Catholic Academies and Parish Schools, I offer

you the following prayer to share with your

family:

Christ be with me, Christ within me,

Christ behind me, Christ before me,

Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort and restore me.

Keep Hands

Clean

Wash your hands often with soap

and water. Use hand sanitizer if

soap and water are not available.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all that love me,

Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,

The strong Name of the Trinity;

By invocation of the same.

The Three in One, and One in Three,

Of Whom all nature hath creation,

Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:

Praise to the Lord of my salvation,

Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Loving Jesus, be with us,

as we prepare to open our

Catholic Academies and Parish Schools

in September. Amen

Wear a

Face Covering

You can be contagiious without

symptoms. Protect those around

you by wearing a face covering.

Let us all pray for a resolution to and decrease

of the COVID-19 virus.

May everyone be healthy, safe, and well.

Sincerely,

Thomas Chadzutko

Where seeing is believing!

Queens

St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Academy offers

all the many benefits and values that Catholic

education provides to our young students

and its contributions to our church, our communities

and our nation. One of the most important

facts about the Catholic education that

is offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic

Academy is not that it offers just the teaching

of academic subjects, but that it also includes

the formation of the whole child including their

spiritual, moral and social development. Most

importantly it forms and strengthens our students’

Catholic identity.

The three components of faith, knowledge

and service are inextricably linked to each

other and are part of the daily Catholic school

curriculum at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic

Academy. We are all learners, servants and

leaders at STACA. Our school has a long tradition

of Catholic education that began in 1909

when the first Dominican Sisters arrived at the

school to begin their mission in Woodhaven. It

has since continued in that same tradition for

St. Thomas the Apostle has grades K-8 and

offers a free PKA Program for children who will

be four years old in 2021. Families can apply

for financial assistance to help with the cost

of the tuition. We offer technology-based instruction

in all the NYS curriculum areas and

in religion. During the recent health crisis, our

faculty and staff managed to continue to offer

classes remotely without pause to provide our

students with continuity of instruction during

this unprecedented time. Our students receive

sacramental preparation as well as instruction

in music, Spanish, art and physical education.

Help a Child Stay in our Catholic Schools!

by John Notaro, Executive Director, Futures in Education

The natural excitement of a new school year

in our Brooklyn and Queens Catholic schools

and academies has been magnified this year by

the highly anticipated return after six months

of separation between our students and our

teachers. They all miss each other – they all

miss their school!

The value of a Catholic education in the Diocese

of Brooklyn was underscored by the success

of so many of our schools, their teachers,

principals and parents, who for the last three

months of schooling last year joined together,

while apart, to ensure that our students’ education

was not disrupted, but continued with the

same dedication shown in person.

That dedication to the children educated in

our schools continued this summer. Our principals,

teachers, staff and the Office of the Superintendent

have worked diligently to put together

a plan for both in-person and remote learning

for the new school year with special attention

to the safety of our schools, the health of our

school families, and continued focus on academic

excellence and faith-filled learning. On

September 9, all our schools will be ready to

open their doors!

This preparation, both at the schools and by

our ever patient and committed parents, has

come with a cost. Besides the social and emotional

toll, the financial burden our schools and

families face is substantial.

When Futures in Education began a COVID-19

relief fund, we received 2,000 new scholarship

applications seeking over $3 million in tuition

relief. Our committed donors stepped up and

helped provide $900,000 in support. Parents

made deeper sacrifices and schools drew from

already strapped budgeted funds to cover the

rest. Sadly, some of our schools could not overcome

the impact.

Now as we enter the new academic year, demand

for a Catholic education is strong, especially

as our public schools struggle with their

reopening plans, beholden to special interests

that do not consider the children as a top priority.

For our families and our schools, funding

remains the biggest obstacle. Schools have

Schools will Re-Open, Taking COVID Precautions

When the 66 Catholic academies and parish

• Hand and respiratory hygiene guidance and

gram created with

schools in Brooklyn and Queens reopen in Sep-

enforcement,

a faculty focused

tember, they will offer one of three plans to keep

their teachers, students and staffs safe in light

of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Diocese of Brooklyn announced each

school has submitted a reopening plan to the

New York State Department of Education. The

majority of proposals call for the reopening of

Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens with

five-day-a-week, 100% in-class instruction.

“We are pleased with the Governor’s recent

announcement regarding the re-opening of

schools,” said Thomas Chadzutko, Ed. D., Superintendent

of Schools. “This is a great first

step in the right direction to helping our children

safely return to the classroom.”

The plans presented one of the following

three options:

Plan A – 100% In-Person Model with the

following requirements:

• Social distancing in the classrooms and

throughout the school building,

• Mandatory face coverings while in school

with mask breaks,

• Signage throughout the building promoting

hygiene, illness, mask and distance requirement,

• Daily health screening of all who enter building

per NYS guidelines, including temperature

checks,

• Procedures in place if a positive COVID case

is detected,

• Testing and tracing policies in place per Department

of Health guidelines.

Plan B - Hybrid Model with the following requirements:

• Same requirements noted above for inschool

instruction,

• Could use a 3/2 schedule - three days in

school and two days of remote learning from

home. Hybrid models vary by school,

• Remote learning with a combination of instruction

sessions led by teachers of the students’

Catholic academy or parish school.

Plan C - 100% Distance Learning - St.

Thomas Aquinas Distance Learning Catholic

Program

• A new diocesan-wide distance learning pro-

exclusively on the

development of an

academically rigorous,

Christ-centered

remote learning

program. This is an

additional option to

ensure instructional

equity for those who

choose 100% remote

learning.

A majority of the

schools and academies

plan to open under Plan A, with the flexibility

to adopt Plan B or Plan C quickly if COVID-19

cases arise.

“Our Principals, teachers, Boards and administrators

have been hard at work to ensure all

the health and safety protocols will be met at

all our Catholic academies and parish schools,”

said Dr. Chadzutko. “We are prepared and excited

for a full reopening in September. This

may be slightly different school-by-school given

the building footprint and student population.

Some schools will need to use a hybrid

model if they cannot meet the social distancing

standards.”

The Superintendent said that the health of

the students, faculty and staff, remains the top

priority, so enhanced cleaning, disinfecting and

sanitizing protocols will be in place at all school

buildings.

Reopening plans for each school can be

found on the individual school website. Additionally,

parent meetings will take, via ZOOM, to

review and discuss the plans.

At St. Joan of Arc School in

Jackson Heights, each morning

students and faculty gather with Father

William Hoppe, the pastor, and Raffaele Corso,

principal, for morning prayers, the Pledge of Allegiance

and the Star-Spangled Banner. As Corso

dismisses each class, he reminds everyone

to be a good neighbor to each other.

This school year, St. Joan of Arc has adopted

the saying as one of its mottos. “One of the first

readings we shared as a school community this

school year was that Jesus teaches us to be a

good neighbor to each other. Each morning I remind

the students and faculty that we should

be good neighbors,” said Corso. Banners hang

throughout the school displaying the motto.

Students have embraced the motto as well.

Sofia M., Class of 2020, says “Being a good

neighbor means being respectful to others

around me. It means to love and care for others.”

The school has begun to be good neighbors

by collecting food for the parish food pantry.

In November and December, the students and

faculty collected over 500 items for the food

pantry. Seventh and eighth grade students have

also started volunteering in the after-school

program, where they help the younger students

with homework and play games with them.

Doryan Sciolino, the sixth grade homeroom

teacher, has been collecting money from the

middle school students to donate to research

for lung cancer. They have raised a little over

$200.

Being a good neighbor

means being respectful to

others around me.

Younger students actively take part in special

fundraisers to help support the eighth grade

as they raise money for graduation activities.

Sabrina C., Class of 2020, feels that, “SJA is a

school where each and every student will grow

and live to be a good neighbor.”

Part of the SJA Mission Statement is to serve

endlessly, and that is what the school is trying

to do as a community.

In a related

“Superintendent of Schools, Thomas Chadzutko

about its reopening plan. In

addition, the school will be

SMCA strongly recommends

that parents make

Glendale, Sacred Heart

Catholic Academy boasts

more than 75 years of

academic excellence.

With an education

mission centered on

Catholic values and studentfirst

philosophy, Sacred Heart

motivates students to become

lifelong learners.

Our students receive daily comprehensive

instruction in religion, reading, language

arts, writing, math, science, social studies,

penmanship, technology, Spanish, art, music,

library skills, physical education, health, and

public speaking. Additionally, in 2019 Sacred

Heart was awarded a grant which allowed us to

build a STEM Lab.

Despite the challenges we all faced during

the COVID-19 pandemic, Sacred Heart was able

to quickly and successfully pivot to distance

learning for all grades. Fortunately, during the

2019-2020 school year, all of our students were

equipped with either an iPad or a Chromebook,

which made for an easier transition once online

learning began.

Sacred Heart has proudly

been voted Best of the Boro’s

Best Catholic School for the

last two years in a row, and

we have been nominated

for a third year this summer.

Children’s Success

We acknowledge that each

child is unique and has the right

to succeed. We labor to provide an

environment that promotes the spiritual,

emotional, academic and physical development

of the child.

We challenge each youngster to realize his or

her fullest spiritual and academic potential, while

providing a safe environment in which they can do

so.

In 2021, we will be celebrating our 80th

anniversary. We are proud of all we have

accomplished in those years, and we look

forward to starting a new year with our students

in September.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy

Proudly Serves Astoria

Queens

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy, Astoria,

is proud to be opening its doors to Learn, Serve,

Lead, and Succeed during the 2020-2021 academic

year. SFACA is a caring community that

is firmly committed to developing a way of life

rooted in Christ and a Catholic vision. The academy

partners are committed to a future filled with

optimism and hope. Our goal is to bring students

back to in-school learning; however, if that is not

permitted due to NYS and Diocesan health and

safety guidelines, the school remains committed

to an engaging and effective blended learning environment.

SFACA will continue to strive to be an

academy of avid learners and socially conscious

individuals who have a personal commitment to

serve others through programs that encourage

faith in action.

The academy’s goal of Success For All has

developed a curriculum that supports students’

strengths to help them maximize their full potential,

by modeling and instilling commitment,

passion, and perseverance. Through progressive

practices and a solid work ethic, the school supports

Carol Dweck’s idea of a growth mindset that

suggests children’s basic intellectual abilities can

be developed through dedication and hard work.

Children need to believe that they can boost their

academic achievement level with a motivational

perspective and the resilience to follow through to

a set goal with determination and tenacity.

Students are actively engaged in a rapidly

changing world that requires them to be creative,

innovative, inventive, artistic, tech-savvy, and

resourceful. The academy educates the child

in academia, STEM, and the arts. The spiritual,

emotional, and social well-being of each child is

essential to his or her growth.

It is the mission of SFACA to model its patron

saint as each student is formed, informed, and

transformed in the image of our Creator and to

reach their hearts, so that their lives and the lives

of all those they touch will be better.

A Pilgrim’s Adventure

PERFECT FOR:

• Families with Children

• Catholic Schools

• Parish Faith Formation Classes

• Distance Learning

Loyola Press is expanding its multimedia

products with a groundbreaking new video game,

Wanderlight: A Pilgrim’s Adventure. Developed

for home and classroom use, Wanderlight

combines the beauty and truth of the Catholic

faith with an adventurous quest-filled journey.

“Wanderlight is transformative, reaching minds

and hearts unlike any other learning platform

that aims to teach Catholic faith formation.

Wanderlight immerses players in their learning—

they experience teachings of the Catholic faith in

self-motivating, active ways,” Joellyn Cicciarelli,

President and Publisher of Loyola Press, said.

Wanderlight, a highly immersive, fully narrated

game experience, encourages players to travel

through three quest-filled realms to explore, to

pray, to do good works, and to learn key aspects

of the Catholic faith.

Players, assuming the identity of “The

Pilgrim” and joined by a helpful dove, wander

three quest-filled realms and are presented

with different characters and situations that

offer opportunities to learn and pray. As the

Pilgrim encounters these opportunities, they

are challenged with completing quests such

as, making ethical choices, learning about

sacraments, and even meeting saints to provide

spiritual enlightenment.

Avid video gamers ages 5-12 can venture

through seven levels of play, which can be

purchased for at-home individual play or utilized

throughout grade levels in a classroom setting.

“Videos provide only passive learning;

textbook books can be engaging, but only when

illuminated through meaningful conversation

with learned catechists. Wanderlight is different.

Wanderlight is meaning yet self-guided—and

best of all, FUN,” Cicciarelli said.

Wanderlight can be played on desktops,

laptops, and tablets with an internet connection.

St. Stanislaus Kostka

Catholic Academy of Queens

Queens

Celebrating its 90th anniversary,

St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic

Academy of Queens welcomes

students from nursery

through eighth grade and offers

a Pre-K for All program that

welcomes four-year-olds.

The best descriptions of a school

do not come from its administration.

They come from the students and their families.

St. Stanislaus Kostka has been referred to

as “the happy school,” a second home, a truly

wonderful school, a place with a very dedicated

staff and a board that strives to ensure that the

children receive the best possible education

while having fun in a family environment!

St. Stan’s is not merely a school. It is a place

where students gain a differentiated, faithbased,

academic foundation on which to build

their education. They learn the value of family,

respect for all, self-control, student agency, and

form friendships that last forever.

The academic curriculum is delivered in concert

with a child’s ability. The instruction is differentiated

and works towards increasing each

child’s level of understanding, accomplished

by using a mix of blended learning, technology

and small group instruction. Time is devoted

for children to work at their own level of understanding,

whether remedial or enrichment. The

school offers SETTS teachers, speech therapy,

occupational therapy, and Title 1 funded math

and reading.

St. Stan’s is not merely

a school. It is a place

where students gain a

differentiated, faith-based,

academic foundation

on which to build their

education.

Coupled with educational experiences

gained from interacting with an inquiry-based

state of the art STREAM Lab, the students will

learn and be engaged. STREAM stands for

Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art,

and Mathematics. St. Stan’s STREAM Lab is

filled with devices that include Ozobots, Little

Bits, Cubelits, 3D printers and other materials

that stimulate creativity and inquiry skills to

solve problems.

St. Stan’s believes in educating

the whole child and offers a free

after-school Musical Theater

Program, open to students

from nursery through eighth

grade. Participants are taught

acting skills, singing and dancing.

Many past Oratorical Assembly

winners and finalists have taken the

poise and on-stage skills learned in the Musical

Theater Program and applied them to public

speaking. Much more than just a “school play,”

this program teaches everything from performing

to stage management, set design, operation

of light and sound boards, and production

management. Students have discovered talents

and interests that only became apparent

through their involvement in this program!

The St. Stan’s Performing Arts Players present

at least one musical theater production a

year, and perform at community and parish

events. As St. Stan’s begins its 12th year, it continues

to move with the times, developing virtual

and socially distant performances.

St. Stan’s also takes pride in being a 1:1

school - one device for the exclusive use of

each student. Students seamlessly made the

transition to distance learning due to their familiarity

with the use of technology and device

use in school. Homeroom teachers presented

at least two live instructional lessons daily, and

teachers of special subjects delivered a weekly

live lesson. Special subjects include art, music,

physical education, Spanish, STREAM, technology,

and writer’s workshop.

Catholic Identity is strong at St. Stan’s.

Weekly Masses, daily prayer, Advent and Lenten

gatherings, prayer services, remembrances,

observations of holy days, and service projects

are just a few of the ways students practice

their faith. Students are taught to engage with

each other in a caring and respectful way, always

reflecting on the feelings of others with

empathy and compassion.

Joining St. Stan’s means being embraced

by its academy family. Each child and family

is welcomed and provided with many opportunities

to engage in activities in and out of the

classroom!

• Some things at the dental office may look

example, your dentist may be using different

St. Rose of Lima CA

Teaching Love of God, Neighbor and Self

Queens

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy in Rockaway

Beach seeks to provide a quality Catholic

education for every child who walks through its

doors. The academy aims to educate the whole

child through programs encompassing the

spiritual, intellectual, social, psychological and

physical development of students.

Through its religious education program, educators

strive to develop a well-rounded Christian

personality that will be reflected by respect

toward self and others as exemplified by Jesus

in the Gospels. Worship builds and celebrates

the relationship between God and the community

of God’s people. It is the academy’s goal to

enrich the spiritual lives of students.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy teaches

love of God, love of neighbor and love of

self, and strives to encourage a respect for life

and a love of learning. The children are taught

to respect the rights of others, understanding

that each person is created in the image and

likeness of God. For this reason, students learn

that they must respect one another.

Teachers strive to create an environment in

which students are challenged through their

learning experiences. By fostering a positive

self-image in students, the school helps develop

their confidence in their ability to succeed.

The academy faculty strongly believes in fostering

a caring, nurturing and supportive community.

The relationship between the student

body and faculty is an essential aspect. In order

for education to take place, it is necessary to

create a secure learning environment. To this

end, the academy follows the guidelines and

standards put forth by the Office of Catholic

Schools Support Services of the Diocese of

Brooklyn, and those mandated by the State of

New York.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy empowers

its students to be directors of their own

learning, with the teacher serving as the guide

along each child’s academic and spiritual journey.

Moving forward in this technology age, the

academy provides its students with a current

and meaningful education with all of the services

needed for all children to succeed to their

highest personal potential.

Social and Emotional Planning for School Reopening – 2020

by Roxanna Elder, District Superintendent at the Diocese of Brooklyn

C29

In Thessalonians 5:18 Paul writes, “give

thanks in all circumstances; for this is the

will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Our faith

encourages us to be filled with this spirit of

gratitude during these challenging times. The

source of this gratitude lies in our relationship

with Christ. Our hope is to lean into these lessons

about gratitude as we prepare to return to

school in September.

As a Catholic community, preparing and

protecting the spiritual well-being of our children,

staff and families are our top priority.

This year, the transition from the summer back

to the classroom will be different, and we are

here to support everyone through this. We are

working diligently to ensure that we create an

uplifting community, where we connect with

our students, faculty and families in these new

school configurations, while adhering to CDC

guidelines.

During the months of April through June

2020, counselors from the Program for the Development

of Human Potential, (PDHP) provided

support to children who were experiencing

crisis during the height of the pandemic. PDHP

also supported teachers’ efforts to ensure that

students experienced a safe environment to

learn by way of phone and video check-ins. In

addition, our staff was provided with A Wellness

Program from April through June 2020, to

support principals and teachers in dealing with

the stress of working in a virtual world. These

sessions included five dimensions: Emotional,

Social, Spiritual, Physical and Intellectual. This

support will continue through the September

2020-July 2021 academic year.

To ensure emotional needs are addressed

with urgency, PDHP and the Mother Cabrini

Counselors will be available to provide social

and emotional support to students and teachers

upon returning to school. The counselors

will work closely with the administrators and

teachers to identify students who have been

exposed to trauma. The counselors will facilitate

programs that will help students process

their experiences during the pandemic, as well

as allow opportunities for students to check-in

to discuss their feelings.

The counselors will implement the Support

for Students Exposed to Trauma Program or

SSET, where students will receive support on

how to deal with anxiety or nervousness, withdrawal

or isolation, depressed moods, acting

out in school and impulsive or risky behaviors.

The counselors will provide appropriate referrals

for post-traumatic stress conditions, health

emergencies, grief and bereavement, anxiety,

depression and health challenges as needed

for students and teachers. PDHP will also work

closely with administrators to customize parent

learning programs for grades K-3 and Evidence

Based Program EBP Guiding Good Choices

grades 4-8 in the virtual world.

“Let the children come to me, and do not prevent

them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs

to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

A Message from the Vicar for Catholic Schools

by Rev. Msgr. David Cassato, Vicar for Catholic Schools

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the

Vicar for Catholic Schools during this unprecedented

moment in history. As many of us experience

elements of uncertainty in our parishes,

our professional lives and at home, our schools

have remained grounded in their mission to

educate and form the hearts and minds of our

children. Many are seeking the academic excellence,

values, security, and support that prepare

our students for a lifetime of success. This

spiritual foundation and academic excellence,

offered at our schools, is what motivates me to

fulfill my duties as your newly appointed Vicar

for Catholic schools.

It is a sincere joy to invite our young people

to embrace their Catholic faith and learn of the

values of Jesus which will continue to guide

them at school and beyond. Our educators are

committed to providing thoughtful instruction

which continues to yield superior academic

results. Our extraordinary graduation rates and

test results are only part of why Catholic education

remains at the forefront of academic

excellence. Our schools are also the epicenter

of community life and allow for lifelong friendships

to form.

This pandemic has brought to light the importance

of community. It was astounding

to see students, educators, staff, and parents

work together to maintain a strong network of

support. On day one of the quarantine, we were

prepared and ready for distance learning. The

safety of our children and educators remains

at the forefront of our planning initiatives. Our

schools have been working tirelessly to ensure

we can safely gather and educate our students.

I am grateful to those who have made this possible

as we focus our attention on preparing our

schools to be ready to welcome students to fulltime,

five days a week, classroom instruction!

If your child is currently not enrolled in our

Catholic schools and you seek to invest in their

future, our schools welcome you with open

arms. If your children are enrolled, share the

achievements and thoughtful instruction provided

to you by our committed educators with

friends and family. If your children are grown

and it is now time for your grandchildren to attend

school, please consider sharing the same

foundation you were blessed to receive many

years ago.

As I begin this new role in the Diocesan

Church, I pray for each one of our students,

parents, educators, and staff. May the Holy

Spirit share with you His gifts and remain with

you always. I also ask that you pray for me and

the mission of our Catholic schools which are

the jewels in the crowns of Kings and Queens

counties.

St. Francis of Assisi CA

Building Students’ Capacity to Learn

Brooklyn

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy (SFA-

CA) located in the Prospect/Lefferts Gardens

area of Flatbush has been an educational beacon

for more than 100 years. Following in the footsteps

of St. Francis of Assisi, this gem steeped

in the Catholic tradition of excellence enables

students through its faith formation program to

develop a deeper understanding of the teachings

of Jesus while cultivating a deeper relationship

with Him.

Utilizing the NYS Next Generation standards

for its core subjects (ELA, Mathematics, Science

and Social Studies) and believing that children

are not born with all the intelligence that they will

ever have, SFACA has been committed to enhancing

its educational curriculum by incorporating

some of these intelligences through music, art,

and physical education. In this same vein, the

Academy participates in “Stages on the Sound”

performing arts residence every year. Through

this residency, students in various grades gain enriching

experiences working with artists in playwriting,

filmmaking and dramatization. Additionally,

the students, faculty and staff of St. Francis

are known for their phenomenal Christmas and

Sponsored | midwoodcatholicacademy.org

Spring Show productions.

In this era of COVID-19, SFACA was extremely

fortunate to have had technology classes as part

of its regular curriculum throughout the school

year. These technology classes became the

spring board for launching a successful distance

learning program for all our students, Pre-K - 8,

from March through June of this year.

Every student graduating from St. Francis

leaves equipped with strong study skills,

time-management and note-taking techniques

that prepares them for high school, college and

a career. To this end, it is important to note that

many of our students who opt to continue on to

Catholic high schools often receive scholarships.

St. Francis of Assisi Academy has dedicated

educators who along with the continual presence

and influence of the Sisters of St. Joseph since its

inception in 1909 has sought to instruct students

in the Catholic faith tradition. Recently the Academy

has also been blessed with the presence of

the Emmanuel Sisters.

Tuition is comparable to other Catholic schools

in the area and tuition assistance is available.

St. Peter Catholic Academy

The Foundational Rock for Catholic education in Bensonhurst

Brooklyn

The Academy family beginning in March was

certainly challenged as we switched to distance

learning in less than 24 hours time. As Jesus

once said, “You are Peter and on this rock I will

build my community. And the gates of the underworld

can never overpower it.” Although the

Academy was faced with challenges, both the

teachers and students were able to overcome

them and succeed. Our faculty took teaching to

a new level.

Fast-forward six months later we are now

ready for our nets to be full again. The symbol

of Saint Peter Catholic Academy is a key. Although

we have experienced some of our most

difficult times we are ready to open our doors

so that young followers may continue to be

strong leaders.

In a few short weeks, our students will return

to their classrooms. While the rooms may be

set up a little differently, and schedules altered,

they now have the key to return home.

To not only our students and their families,

but also our faculty and staff, Saint Peter Catholic

Academy is not just a brick and mortar

building, it is their home…

“Over the years, Saint Peter Catholic Academy

has become a second home to me. This

institution challenged me to work hard and

pursue what I found important while having

supportive teachers that guided me and taught

valuable life lessons.” - Samantha Chan, Valedictorian

of the Class of 2020.

As Peter followed Jesus his life was changed

forever. Much in the same the Academy family

has worked together to overcome all obstacles

so that we may continue to change the lives of

our students.

Welcome back!

How to Borrow for College

It’s no secret college can be expensive, and

families are often faced with finding creative

ways to cover the costs. Whether borrowing

student loans or parent loans has always been

part of your family’s plan or it is suddenly being

considered due to new financial circumstances,

there is good news: several smart strategies

can help you save money.

• Automate payments: Automating payments

not only gives you the peace of mind that

comes with knowing that your bills will be

paid on time, every time, but some lenders

even offer interest rate reductions alongside

this option.

• Choose a shorter repayment term: Some

private lenders allow you to customize the

length of your repayment term. If it’s in your

monthly budget to do so, select a shorter

term.

• Start early: Consider making monthly payments

on the loan while the student is still

in school. Payments may be deferred during

this time, but the loan may still be accruing

interest that will be added to your loan balance.

• Go above and beyond: When possible, make

additional payments on your loan. Whether

you choose to do this monthly or in lump

Sponsored | stpeteracademy-brooklyn.org

sums after special occasions. Just be sure

your lender doesn’t charge a fee for doing so.

• Borrow federal first: Borrow federal student

loans in the student’s name first. They offer

low fixed interest rates to all borrowers, not

just those with excellent credit scores.

• Shop around: If federal student loans don’t

adequately cover college costs, private student

loans can fill the gap.

There are a number of private student and

private parent loan options available at great

rates from College Ave Student Loans, which

offers streamlined customer service features

and cost-saving perks, such as an interest rate

reduction when you automate payments and no

penalties for additional payments made. More

tips, resources, guides and financial expert advice

to help you navigate the financial road to

college can be found by visiting, collegeave.

com.

“The pandemic has created some uncertainty

for many families,” says Joe DePaulo,

co-founder and CEO of College Ave Student

Loans. “However, there are steps you can take

now to create a solid plan to cover your upcoming

college costs.”

TACHS 2020: The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools

for Grade 8 Students Administered Online, At-Home Test

by Diane Phelan, Associate Superintendent for Evaluation of Programs and Students at the Diocese of Brooklyn

C41

There is no question that COVID-19 has

changed the way students learn and testing

students has been greatly impacted as well. It

is still unclear what fall will look like. The safety

and health of students, teachers and administrators,

is, and will always be, our main concern.

Keeping that as our main priority, we will be administering

the TACHS exam as an online, athome

remote test in fall 2020.

The Test for Admission into Catholic High

Schools (TACHS) will test eighth grade students

who are interested in attending a Catholic

High School beginning in September 2021.

In order to be admitted into the Catholic High

Schools, students must take the TACHS in November

2020.

All three Dioceses: The Diocese of Brooklyn/

Queens, The Archdiocese of New York and the

Diocese of Rockville Centre are all part of the

TACHS 2020 program. This means students

will take the TACHS test given within their Diocese

and will be able to choose any of the

high schools from the three dioceses that has a

TACHS code in the Student Handbook for their

three high school choices.

The TACHS test date within the Diocese of

Brooklyn/Queens is on Saturday, November 7,

2020. If a student has a testing conflict, they

should check with their elementary school principal

or guidance counselor for information or

check the FAQs on the TACHS website, however,

students must register for the November 7th

TACHS test date by the 5 PM, October 23rd, due

date, should they wish a TACHS make-up session

(TBD). If a student does not have a TACHS

ID, they are not eligible for the TACHS make-up

test.

Here are helpful guidelines for TACHS 2020:

• Prior to registration, Review online remote

testing system and device requirements and

understand and be able to consent to the use

of Proctorio; the Artificial Intelligence system

that will monitor and record your student’s

test session.

• Register for the exam via internet or telephone

beginning at 9:00 AM EST on August

24, 2020. Register before the deadline on October

23,2020, at 5:00 PM EST. No late registration

or walk-in students will be allowed

this year.

• When registration is completed, you will

receive an email. Read the email thoroughly

for other important information and “next

steps”.

• The deadline for submitting an extended

testing time accommodation form and

supporting documentation to your Diocese

is October 9, 2020. The form can be

found online at: www.tachsinfo.com

• After you register, (you will require your assigned

TACHS ID) but prior to 5:00 PM EST

on November 5, 2020, enter your three (3)

2 TWINS Digital Printing

and Graphic Design

The foundation of 2TwinsPrinting began with

two twins Gina and Joanne. As business began,

the strength of COVID-19 struck and impacted

lives worldwide. As the severity of the virus

continued to grow, the focus of our business

shifted to supporting small businesses and using

our printing to benefit businesses that began

to financially plummet. In this, the creation of

our “Thank You First Responders and Essential

Workers” lawn sign spread rapidly to unite all

during this heartbreaking time as numerous

businesses and families displayed these signs.

Our lawn sign designs increased our business

throughout COVID, where we chose to use this

blessing to help smaller businesses suffering

as we printed many of these signs during this

time. Furthermore, all signs purchased by small

businesses sold our work and received a donation

for every sign they sold to support their business.

As graduation approached, our business further

gained attention as both catholic and public

schools sought our help to show appreciation for

the graduating class of 2020. With the passion

from school representatives to show a token

of pride for their students and our goal to uplift

those confined to the restrictions of COVID-19,

we worked with all schools and adjusted

prices, supplying every gradating student with

a lawn sign as a proper graduation ceremony

was not plausible. In this, the primary focus of

2TwinsPrinting is to work with all schools and

businesses to provide the best flexible price in

receiving the best quality work for a low cost. We

are a full-service printing company that can work

with all types of printing to support and care for

all, “We treat you like family, and family always

gets good pricing” so give us a call and become a

Tips to Help Erase Bullying

this Back-to-School Season

This back-to-school

season may look a

little different, but no

matter what learning

environment kids find

themselves in this fall,

bullying is a real cause

for concern.

One in five kids

aged 12 to 18 has

encountered bullying,

according to StopBullying.gov.

It can happen

in person, online

or even by text. In an

effort to combat the

problem, Pilot Pen

launched the Erase

Bullying for Good

campaign in 2015 to help support bullying prevention

programs in schools nationwide. For a

smooth start to the school year, they are offering

parents these back-to-school tips for facing

the issue:

• Sometimes kids hesitate to share negative

situations they’re encountering. That

doesn’t mean they aren’t showing signs that

something is wrong. Pay attention to sudden

changes in mood, sleep patterns, study

habits or other signs of stress. Let kids know

that if they’re bullied or witness bullying, it’s

okay to come to you or another trusted adult,

like a teacher, counselor or coach. A strong

trust network helps kids feel safe and empowered.

• If your child is being bullied, reassure them

that they’re not alone and have done nothing

wrong. Let them know you’ll work through

this together. Follow up with school officials

to ensure the negative behavior is being

addressed, especially if your child is being

physically bullied or feels like they’re in

danger.

• The presence of digital devices and broad

reach of social media means more avenues

for bullies to reach their targets. Maintain an

open dialogue with your child regarding online

activity, and don’t be shy about keeping

an eye on profiles and posts.

• Being the target of bullying can feel isolating

and overwhelming. If your child witnesses

bullying, encourage them to be an “upstander,”

not just a bystander. This involves being

an ally who stands up to bullies, and it can

be as simple as seeking help from an adult,

or as ambitious as starting an anti-bullying

program at school.

• It can be disheartening to learn that your own

child has engaged in bullying. Remember,

bullying is a behavior, and behaviors can be

changed. Help your child identify underlying

feelings that may be causing them to act out

in this way and encourage them to find positive

outlets such as sports, art or journaling.

• It’s important for kids to understand that

the goal of bullying is to make the victim

feel scared or powerless. Parents can equip

children with the knowledge, resources and

confidence they need to feel empowered in

the face of bullying, as well as with tools that

align with this cause.

By the end of 2020, the Erase Bullying for

Good campaign, through purchases of Pilot’s

FriXion Erasable pens, will have contributed

more than $450,000 to organizations committed

to bringing bullying prevention and education

programs to US schools. FriXion’s unique,

thermosensitive erasable ink writes smoothly

and erases cleanly, so students, teachers and

parents can write, create and express themselves

fearlessly without the stress of written

mistakes, empowering them to be upstanders

through the written word. To learn more, visit

HelpEraseBullying.com.

Bullying is all too common. However, parents

can play an active role in helping put a stop to it

this back-to-school season and beyond.

Conveniently located in College Point, St. Agnes

Academic High School was founded over

a century ago by the Sisters of St. Dominic of

Amityville. The Sisters believed then, as they

believe today, that if you educate a woman you

educate a nation.

Small and Safe Environment

St. Agnes offers a strong academic and values-based

curriculum in a safe environment.

Our small size makes it possible to provide

face-to face-instruction in every classroom on

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The

School will be closed on Wednesdays for deep

cleaning. St. Agnes is fully prepared to welcome

students back safely in September.

Academics

State-of-the-art technology and a rapidly expanding

STEM Program prepare students to

be leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering,

Math. With the program linked to academic

and research universities, St. Agnes also offers

unique hands-on experiences for young women

in this growing field.

In fall 2020, St. Agnes will introduce the new

Business and Finance Lab. As world financial

markets grow more complex, it is essential to

develop leaders with knowledge and integrity.

St. Agnes does both successfully.

Why Choose an all-girls school?

Statistics prove the overwhelming value of

an all-girls educational environment. The National

Coalition of Girls Schools analyzes the

responses to the High School Survey of Student

Engagement, which was taken by 13,000 girls

attending all-girls schools, co-ed independent

schools and co-ed public schools. The girls’ responses

provide overwhelming support for the

value of an all-girls educational environment.

Students attending all-girls schools:

1. Have higher aspirations and greater motivation.

2. Feel more comfortable being themselves

and expressing their ideas.

3. Show greater gains on core academic and

life skills.

St. Edmund Prep

St. Edmund Prep to Return with Hybrid Learning Model

Brooklyn

St. Edmund Preparatory High School will return

to the halls of 2474 Ocean Avenue when the

2020-2021 school year begins for all students on

September 14th. St. Edmund Prep has created a

plan to open this September with a hybrid model.

Each day, some students will be in the building

face to face while other students are at home.

This plan was created first and foremost

with the health and safety of all members of the

school community in mind, while responding to

the feedback of its families. The physical limitations

of the school building presented some interesting

challenges to the twenty-five member

re-opening task force. The hybrid model allows

students to socially distance and responsibly return

to in-person learning. During the COVID-19

shut down of schools, St. Edmund Prep leveraged

the integration of the Google G-Suite and

its 1:1 Chromebook program to seamlessly

move to complete remote learning. Additional

technology upgrades in the classrooms will

allow for all lessons to be synchronous, which

means that the students at home will be taking

part in the same live lesson happening with their

class in the school building.

In a letter to the school community, Principal

Allison McGinnis said “The SEP Re-Opening Plan

is very thorough and detailed. Our students will

be receiving an education that fosters bold learning

and uncommon leaders. Resuming extracurricular

activities will allow students to express

themselves in a way that has been lacking these

past five months. Combining responsible health

and safety precautions with rigorous academics

will allow us to continue to provide opportunities

for our students to grow academically, socially,

and religiously as it remains our priority to live

out our mission.”

We are confident that this plan will enable St.

Edmund Prep to continue to form the innovative,

compassionate, moral leaders our world needs

in the face of the ever changing educational

landscape of the 21st Century.

Fordham Preparatory School is a Catholic Jesuit

all-boys high school located on the historic

mission is to form leaders in faith, scholarship,

and service through a college preparatory education.

The Fordham Prep experience includes a

faith formation program which allows all students,

regardless of religious background, to

learn more about themselves and their place

in this world. It includes opportunities to celebrate

the Mass daily, individual prayer and reflection,

retreats, and religious studies classes.

Each Fordham Prep student, by virtue of their

acceptance, is placed into the school’s “Individualized

Honors Program”. This program allows

students to choose classes that are challenging

and meet their individual needs. It includes

honors, advanced honors, and 20 Advanced

Placement (AP) classes. Students also have

access to the school’s new iSTEAM program,

a cross-curricular program that gives students

the opportunity to work with new technologies

including aviation, engineering, gaming,

medical research, and robotics. The program

includes both academic classes and co-curricular

clubs and activities.

As a Catholic Jesuit institution, Fordham

Prep is committed to forming “men for others”.

All students must complete a four year service

requirement in order to graduate. This includes ships sinc2 2010. In the past year, the school
