Who are we?
We’re glad you asked!
The Happy Materialist Collective is Ottawa’s newest creative group. We’re
a diverse group of young individuals that strive to bring our talents to
light through our many projects. As a family, we’re held together with our
strong principles of Stoic philosophy, academic engagement, and creative
expression. We believe that the material world is defined as much by its
emotional meaning as it is with its physical representation.
This Zine is one of many publications we have underway. We hope you
will take the time to enjoy them!
Expect our Zine every month starting with this issue!
Sincerely,
The Front Porch Team
A word from
Hinako:
I’m Hinako Okawa, a member of the Happy Materialist Collective and a
part of the Front Porch team!
Art has always been a part of me throughout my life in different forms. I
attended 2 different art high schools and was given the chance to experiment
with many components of art. I am now focusing on photography,
non-traditional art, and drawing.
During university, I had lost touch with making art and being creative,
but thanks to this opportunity I am able to be creative, express other peoples
thoughts and feelings and even my own. These pieces are part of my
journey as an artistist and as a person.
I hope to make more artwork and continue to grow!

Phantasmagoria
Harmonious disarray.
Unbearable silence.
Alone in the dark
With carnivorous apathy.
Before I go to work
Tending the overgrown wilds
Sprouting from the ruins of my mind.
You tore down walls
Opened fault lines in the cement.
With cheap perfume
And eyes like glistening emeralds.
You rampaged across my mind
And I loved every minute.
They grew in silence
A graveyard of silent petals.
I wish you could see them bloom
But they are mine to maintain.
And so I continue to work.
A distant dream.
The sweetest memory and deepest pain.

The next day? Who knows?
I looked up to the writhing
skyline. It moved, curled, slithered,
and twisted into heaven as the tentacles
incessantly waved back and forth.
Sometimes, they would block
out the light and I would
become scared. In time I
realized, however, that
there really never
was a need to be
scared in the
first place. It
was just a
drawing,
dude.
The Fit Examined
She’s got style
She’s got grace
Her Doc Marten boots
Are tightly laced
Here we have Hana with a whole bunch of clothes that really seem to
be united under one theme: the colour red. You see, the colour red is
quite an interesting colour as the ‘R’ on ROYGBIV stands for precisely
that colour! Yes, I’m talking about red. It’s also the first colour on the
rainbow, so I’m going to have to say with absolute certainty that her fit is
very good. One of the best I’ve seen, personally. The only critique I have
is that there isn’t more red! Maybe if the flowers on her boots were also
red she could have attained a higher score...

Thank you so much for reading all the way
to the end! We hope it was enjoyable and
relaxing. Days like these can get busy eh?
Hope to see you next month!
Sincerely,
The Front Porch team
