UNDERVALUED AND OVERWORKED:EDUCATORS DISCUSS THECONTINUING TEACHER SHORTAGEBy Emily HobrlaEducation is one of the most profitableindustries in the world right now, yet the fieldis struggling to fill positions on the front lines.While textbook companies excel and onlinelearning platforms thrive, the individuals whoare face-to-face with students every dayface a much bleaker outlook. The teachingoccupation is experiencing an increasingshortage so severe it’s becoming a crisis inpublic K-12 schools nationwide.The Economic Policy Institute (EPI), anonpartisan nonprofit research organization,defines the teacher shortage as “the inabilityto staff vacancies at current wages withindividuals qualified to teach in the fieldsneeded.” This means that schools are eitherunderstaffed or starting to fill vacancies withunderqualified teachers. In addition, theshortage is not equal in all school districts,as the nonprofit educational research groupthe Learning Policy Institute (LPI) found that“in 2017, two-thirds of principals in highpovertyschools left positions vacant or hiredless-qualified teachers. Less than half of theircounterparts in schools with fewer lowerincomestudents did so.” This inequality furtherdisadvantages kids from low-income schoolsvery early on in their lives.The EPI references multiple factors for theteacher shortage, the main one being lowpay. Teachers’ wages are not affected byinflation; instead, wages are determined bythe district’s salary schedule, which is outlinedevery few years in their contract and one ofthe main reasons for the disproportionatelylow salaries. Public schools are funded byincome and property taxes, so in wealthierareas schools receive more funding.Additionally, the pay schedule for teachers inmost districts is based on experience in years,which means that experienced teachers getpaid more. It also means that newer teachersare less expensive for the district to hire,which incentivizes them to hire newer andthus more inexperienced teachers. This oftenresults in lower-income school districts hiringinexperienced teachers because they cannotafford to hire more qualified ones — andagain, students in lower-income areas thenreceive lower-quality education compared totheir peers in higher-income areas.THECURRENTMSU.COM 17
