Side Trip:

I’d forgotten how miserable it can be to

sleep without air conditioning.

Growing up, hot muggy nights were normal

as our big white farm house never had

air conditioning. It was shaded by mature

elm trees, and we slept

with the windows

open. Most nights

there was a bit of a

breeze to cool things

down.

The last two weeks,

due to a construction

project, we’ve had no

air conditioning in

our place at the Lakes.

At first I tried keeping

the windows closed

and shades drawn,

running the ceiling

MYRNA

WAGNER

fan to circulate air, but we didn’t make it

through one night with that approach.

Next we opened windows to the north

and south, pulling cooler evening air in

from one end and trying to push the hot

air out the other side. That worked — it just

took a long time, and by about 4 a.m. the

house was cool enough for sound sleeping.

Our third approach was the one that

worked best — open every window you can

and run as many fans as you can find. It

only lowered the interior temperature to 79

degrees on the first night, but on night two,

when the wind changed direction to the

north, we woke to a chilly 67 degrees and

everyone feeling well rested.

The downfall was the noise. Fans running

at high speed for hours on end gets on

your nerves. Add the washer and dryer, dish

washer, microwave and television and I was

ready for a strong dose of Excedrin.

This morning the HVAC crew came to

reconnect, so all is back to normal. I have

renewed appreciation for modern conveniences

and admiration for our ancestors

who survived hot summers on the prairie.

Maybe that’s what first attracted them to

have summer homes at the Lakes — cooling

off in the clear Okoboji water.

JUNGLE

comes to Iowa

The

Treasure

Village

theater

show

opens

June 30

We have made a lot

of choices to make

sure everyone stays

safe and we hope we

can provide people

a chance to enjoy

some time to escape

and unwind.

Linnea Lambert

In Milford, a jungle adventure

awaits.

Treasure Village will be opening

their family theater with their first

show of the season on Tuesday, June

30, with “Jungle Book.” Performances

will begin at 10 a.m. and will run

from June 30-July 18 on Tuesday-

Saturday mornings. Doors will open

at 9:15 a.m.

They are excited to be able to offer

up their particular brand of entertainment

during this completely

abnormal summer due to the coronavirus

pandemic.

“The governor did extend her proclamation

to include our theater so it

will be open in addition to our flea

market and miniature golf,” said Linnea

Lambert, the managing director

at Treasure Village. “We usually have

over 330 seats but we have removed

over half our capacity to just have

150. We have it set up for groupings

of 4-6 that can sit together with the

next group being six feet from anyone

else.”

This year the actors will be wearing

microphones and the first row has

been pushed back to make it as safe

as possible for the actors and the customers.

They also won’t be hosting

their regular intermission activities

where kids in attendance can go up

on stage.

“Adhering to guidelines, there will

be no face painting this summer.

There will be photos with the cast but

set back six feet. Intermission will be

different as we dismiss sections but

play games from our seats,” according

to their news release. “We also have

generous businesses

that have

donated prizes that

will be hidden in

theater programs

for audience members

to win.”

The show that

will start things off

this year is adapted

from Rudyard

Kippling’s “Jungle

Book.”

“It’s the story

of Mowgli, the

man-cub, who

has been raised

in the jungle by

Baloo, the bear,

and Bagheera, the

panther,” said

Lambert. “Unfortunately,

a new

threat has arisen

as Shere Khan, the

tiger, has returned

to the jungle after many years away.

He does not like Mowgli and the animals,

with the help of the audience,

try to outwit Shere Khan.”

This show has been a fun one for

the company’s actors.

“We have actors who haven’t done

animals and they are enjoying it

but saying that it’s hard,” Lambert

said. ”We’ve spent a great deal of

time in rehearsals studying footage

of their animals and learning to create

animal sounds and discovering

how that animal would move when

played by a human.”

Concessions will be available and

have been adapted to comply with

safety guidelines.

“We are excited to be able to open.

We are family-owned and operated

and we value the healthy of our

people and the health of our audiences

more than anything,” Lambert

said. “We have made a lot of choices

to make sure everyone stays safe and

we hope we can provide people a

chance to enjoy some time to escape

and unwind.” F

Signature hole at Brooks Golf offers panoramic view

At a whopping 27 choices,

Brooks Golf has plenty of options

for a signature hole.

The course was originally constructed

as an 18-hole layout in 1932

and expanded to 27 in 1995, now

offering a mix of parkland and linksstyle

challenges.

They’ve hosted the Iowa PGA Section

Championship and Barb Thomas

Pro-Am and once upon a time

even attracted famous names such

as Sam Snead and Walter Hagan for

exhibition matches.

Both would probably cringe

watching me attempt to hit a golf

ball.

But that’s what I tried my best to

do on a beautiful, sunny day earlier

this week in Okoboji.

We had previously singled out various

holes on Iowa Great Lakes courses

in the July 2017 issue of OKOBOJI

magazine, so I immediately knew

what hole I would attempt to conquer.

Dubbed “Kame,” the seventh hole

on the white course is a par five with

an elevated tee box giving golfers

a commanding view of almost the

entire course.

With the right breeze at your back,

it’s easy to feel like you could smash

a drive all the way to Highway 71.

In reality, the hole plays 535 yards

from the farthest tee, or 505 yards

from the tee box for a regular schmo

like me.

In that issue of OKOBOJI magazine,

course superintendent Brett

Hetland said, “You can really bomb

a drive on this one, but with out of

bounds and sand on the left you

have to be careful. You can also go

for the green with a good second

shot, but it’s protected with a pot

bunker as well.”

Hetland also noted that wind plays

a big factor on this hole and often

determines whether someone goes

for the green in two or three shots.

Considering I probably average

one round of golf every couple years,

and it had been at least that long

since I’d last swung a club, I was just

hoping I’d make contact with the

ball.

With my expectations set appropriately

low, I stepped to the tee for

my drive, making a surprisingly solid

connection but pulling it left, exactly

where Hetland said to avoid, and I

could see the ball roll past the out-ofbounds

rope.

Buoyed by confidence from making

solid contact, I decided to take

a mulligan. Yeah, I hit a second tee

shot, and actually connected better

and managed to keep it straight

ahead landing inside the left edge of

the fairway.

With plenty of distance left to go

I just hoped to follow the fairway as

it curved to the left and give myself a

reasonable approach to the green for

my third shot.

Instead I sliced it low and into the

first cut of the rough. At least the ball

covered a fair amount of distance before

it came to rest atop a short hill.

A good shot from here would

make the green, but the bunker had

me worried. I avoided the sand, but

also the fairway, and left it short of

the flag by about 30 yards.

I left my pitch similarly short, leaving

a long putt for what I was going

to consider par, but instead I over

compensated and the ball sailed past

the hole.

Two-putting from there put me at

double-bogey, but I suppose I should

tack on a penalty stroke for that first

out-of-bounds drive.

Seems about right for the first time

out in quite some time. F

Part One: Fun historical

tidbits about life at the

Iowa Great Lakes

The Iowa Great Lakes has a long

history.

For over a hundred years,

people have flocked to the state’s

summer playground for fun and relaxation.

That’s a lot of history.

And you can learn all about that

history and more at the Iowa Great

Lakes Maritime Museum at Arnolds

Park Amusement Park.

The museum is curated by Mary

Kennedy and she shared with us

some historical tidbits about the

Iowa Great Lakes that you probably

don’t know about as well as some

topics she is asked about at the

museum. We will be sharing these

historical fun anecdotes in multiple

stories.

There were alligators in

the Majestic Roller Rink.

When C. P. Benit bought Stevens

Park in 1918, the first big thing he

added was the Majestic Roller Rink

in 1919. In the middle of the rink a

pond foundation was installed and a

gazebo type structure was added on

top of the floor to go over the pond.

You would skate around the pond.

About 1920, C.P. Benit returned

from Florida with a dozen alligators,

which were put in the pond. They

did not survive a long time, but some

were stuffed by Harry Tennant (taxidermist

at the Kurio Kastle) and one

of those remained in the Benit Family

for many years. It is not believed

that goldfish or fish were ever put in

the pond.

— As told by Gordy Benit, grandson of

C.P. Benit, to Mary Kennedy. 2017

Why is the steering

The steering wheel is on the right

side of power boats for mechanical

reasons. Boat propellers usually turn
