PHOTOS BY RYLANHOWEAt a Glance:WHAT: Brooks GolfWHERE: 1201 Brooks Park Dr.,Okoboji, IAWHEN: Tee times start at 7 a.m.Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m.Friday-SundayCOST: Rates range from $30-$75depending on day, time, seasonand number of holesCONTACT: 712-332-5011ONLINE: www.brooksgolfclub.comLAUNCHPAD I N T H ESKYSignature hole at Brooks Golf offers panoramic viewAt a whopping 27 choices,Brooks Golf has plenty of optionsfor a signature hole.The course was originally constructedas an 18-hole layout in 1932and expanded to 27 in 1995, nowoffering a mix of parkland and linksstylechallenges.They’ve hosted the Iowa PGA SectionChampionship and Barb ThomasPro-Am and once upon a timeeven attracted famous names suchas Sam Snead and Walter Hagan forexhibition matches.Both would probably cringewatching me attempt to hit a golfball.But that’s what I tried my best todo on a beautiful, sunny day earlierthis week in Okoboji.We had previously singled out variousholes on Iowa Great Lakes coursesin the July 2017 issue of OKOBOJImagazine, so I immediately knewwhat hole I would attempt to conquer.Dubbed “Kame,” the seventh holeon the white course is a par five withan elevated tee box giving golfersa commanding view of almost theentire course.With the right breeze at your back,it’s easy to feel like you could smasha drive all the way to Highway 71.In reality, the hole plays 535 yardsfrom the farthest tee, or 505 yardsfrom the tee box for a regular schmolike me.In that issue of OKOBOJI magazine,course superintendent BrettHetland said, “You can really bomba drive on this one, but with out ofbounds and sand on the left youhave to be careful. You can also gofor the green with a good secondshot, but it’s protected with a potbunker as well.”Hetland also noted that wind playsa big factor on this hole and oftendetermines whether someone goesfor the green in two or three shots.Considering I probably averageone round of golf every couple years,and it had been at least that longsince I’d last swung a club, I was justhoping I’d make contact with theball.With my expectations set appropriatelylow, I stepped to the tee formy drive, making a surprisingly solidconnection but pulling it left, exactlywhere Hetland said to avoid, and Icould see the ball roll past the out-ofboundsrope.Buoyed by confidence from makingsolid contact, I decided to takea mulligan. Yeah, I hit a second teeshot, and actually connected betterand managed to keep it straightahead landing inside the left edge ofthe fairway.With plenty of distance left to goI just hoped to follow the fairway asit curved to the left and give myself areasonable approach to the green formy third shot.Instead I sliced it low and into thefirst cut of the rough. At least the ballcovered a fair amount of distance beforeit came to rest atop a short hill.A good shot from here wouldmake the green, but the bunker hadme worried. I avoided the sand, butalso the fairway, and left it short ofthe flag by about 30 yards.I left my pitch similarly short, leavinga long putt for what I was goingto consider par, but instead I overcompensated and the ball sailed pastthe hole.Two-putting from there put me atdouble-bogey, but I suppose I shouldtack on a penalty stroke for that firstout-of-bounds drive.Seems about right for the first timeout in quite some time.
