Q. How did you learn to shoot fashion/

beauty photography?

I was a conceptual photographer for about

a year until a friend of mine wanted some

fashion shots, I fell in love with the styling

and editing part of it. I liked the idea of

having a full team on set and collaborating

with different individuals to create a certain

look, so I wanted to try it more. Pass forward

two years, and I met this amazing MUA,

Ahood, who wanted some beauty shots and I

just knew this is my new favorite genre.

Q. Any tips for those looking to get

outside of their comfort zone and try new

photography tactics?

I think it’s important to step outside of our

comfort zones, try new tactics and let our

creativity take over. Always remember that

even the masters of photography were once

beginners. Ask questions and don’t be afraid

of failure. Learn to pick yourself back up and

practice again and again.

Q. How did you make the switch to from

TFP to getting paid for your passion?

I can literally write a book about this topic.

Often times, people tend to forget or ignore

the fact that artists have to pay bills and

upgrade equipment. After I built a solid

portfolio, I learned to value my work and

approach clients that respect what I do.

Building my packages and putting a price on

my work was one of the hardest things I had

to do as a photographer

Q. What does your editing process look

like?

First, I retouch the photos, then adjust the

colors based on the mood or the theme I’m

aiming for. Beauty shots usually take me

two-to-three hours of retouching. Whereas

fashion shots take anywhere between 20 to 45

minutes. I enjoy every second of it.

Q. Where and how do you scout your

models?

In the beginning, I used to work with

Instagram models. But now I mainly shoot

agency models. Agencies reach out and send

me their modeling packages, then select

models with my team based on the look

we’re aiming for. We always search for unique

models that can add to our work.

Q. What do you love most about being a

fashion photographer?

I feel like I’m completely myself when I

shoot. When I hold the camera, I forget about

everything and focus on getting the shot. I

also really love meeting amazing people. I

met the most amazing and inspiring people

from fashion photography.

Q. What is the Best advice you ever received

while pursuing your dream

Two advices actually. First one is to invest in

yourself. Educating ourselves is priceless. The

second advice is to understand the difference

between following the money and following

your passion. Following the money will only

get you so far, but following your passion will

take you to new places.

recommend to shake things up for yourself and shoot in a new

I location. I tend to be more of a studio photographer but I love the

challenge of a new place to photograph! For me, this is shooting

outdoors! Even though I’ve done plenty of shoots outside, its much

harder to control the light like I can in the studio. Also, playing

around with editing can give a new perspective on your images to

add to portfolios.

make clothes. I don’t know

I if you would say I set trends

or make fantastic works of

art. My brain doesn’t think

that way. I make clothes that

women love to wear. There is

absolutely nothing better then

when you’ve been working

on a garment and when the

client tries it on and she starts

dancing and twirling. The smile

on her face is what I make and

I think that’s pretty cool.

@Rowes_fashion

@Styled.by.brandi

Los Angeles, California

spent my entire life building my career the “American” way - going to college

I and getting a 9-5 job upon graduation. Although I was blessed to be making

over $50k with full benefits at age 21, something in me was discontent with my

life. I knew in my heart I was meant to serve a greater purpose. The women at my

job noticed my fashion forward style and would literally bring clothes into my

office to ask me how they should style them. I then realized I had a gift. What was

common sense to me could be a mental breakdown for others. So I decided to

learn more about the fashion styling industry. Although nothing was promised, I

figured it was time I take a leap of faith. I stacked up my money, quit my job and

moved back home to Los Angeles to pursue styling full time.

Within my first month I was flown out to New York to style a photoshoot for

an upcoming artist. I had always dreamed of traveling and making money

independently, rather than being chained to a desk all day. Landing in New York

reminded me that dreams are for real. Since then, one opportunity continued

to lead to the next. I began to help style more upcoming artists, magazine photo

shoots, music videos, and commercials, which pushed me into costume design

(wardrobe styling for television and film). Within less than a year, that one leap of faith lead me to be the lead costume

designer two operas and now an independent film that is set to release in 2020. Don’t ever let any one tell you it’s too

soon to jump. And don’t ever let yourself get too comfortable. There will never be a “right” time. Have faith in yourself, be

patient, and remain consistent. The world is yours!

Q. What do you love about fashion photography? And why did

you pursue this passion?

Fashion photography kind of snuck up on me. I got into

photography because I had an interest in fine art photography

and that is what I was focused on. It wasn’t until a few years

ago when a friend who was starting their own fashion brand

reached out to me to shoot her collection that I was introduced

to fashion photography. I was drawn to it more because of the

social aspect. You get to constantly work with other creative

people and collaborate to create something beautiful. Plus its a

lot of fun so I decided to focus on trying to create a future for

myself in fashion photography and the passion just grew from

there.

Q. We see that your launching your own label, Tell us what got

you into creating your own brand, and what will it consist of?

I live in Brisbane QLD right between the CBD and the Gold

Coast. So naturally the majority of the clothing here is targeted

to a very laid back coastal vibe, A lot of fashion boutiques

offering floral dresses and swimwear etc. As beautiful as these

clothes can be, they just aren’t my style, and I have a found a lot

of other people in the same boat. So I decide to do something

about it. My brand ELAINE is made to seamlessly intergrade

into any modern women’s wardrobe who is looking to add a

little bit of an edgy flare to their everyday essentials. I’m really

excited about this new adventure and cant wait to launch later in

the year. You can visit the brand on Instagram @elainethelabel

Q. What makes an exceptional editorial in

your opinion?

I am drawn to editorials that tell a story or that

have a point of difference.

If there is interesting styling where the clothing

just draws you in, or if the model looks like she

is engaged and telling a story with her posing

and expressions. These are the most important

part in making any editorial exceptional in my

opinion and its these aspects I try and focus my

attention on when creating my own work.

Q. Where does most of your inspiration come

from for you shoots.

9 times out of 10 my inspiration comes from

clothing. If I find an interesting garment that

draws me in and sparks creative thinking then I

try and build a shoot around that piece, and let

things evolve from there. I love creating images

where the clothing is really unique and edgy,

something that people haven’t seen 1000 times

over. This is definitely my main passion in my

work. The other form of inspiration comes from

faces. if I find a model or am approached by

someone who I just LOVE then I do everything

in my power to work with them. I love getting

to know them and then trying to capture their

personality in the images. This was the case in

this editorial ‘Castaway’. Zoe approached me

and I fell in love with her look and her easy

going personality and I really think this comes

through in the images.

SILTED

Alaskan beaches are formed from glacier sediments known as SILT. The silt

leaves the beaches rocky and gray. The fine silt near and under the ocean reacts

Olga Mordanova

I am Olga Mordanova, a simple girl from Russia, Moscow, who loves taking photographs in fashion

and beauty. Moreover, I work as an English teacher in Moscow State University of Physics and

Technology. At first photography was just a hobby, I photographed everything I saw, then I was

offered to be published in one of the magazines. Nowadays, I have more than 30 publications in

different magazines which are focused on fashion. I am happy to spend a good amount of time on

personal projects, traveling and collaborating with a team of talented, creative people.

Q. Where do you find

the perfect model

for your upcoming

editorial?

Usually I find models

in model agencies.

Moreover, some

freelance-models write

me directly on the

Instagram.

Q. What is your editing

process like?

In past I used to retouch

by myself , but now

I have a professional

retoucher and I can rely

on myself.

Q. Tell us about one

of your favorite shoots

you’ve worked on?

I can definitely say, that

one of my most favorite

shoots was “back to

space”, where I showed

the cosmic beauty of the

model.

Q. How did you get into

Fashion and Beauty

Photography?

In my childhood I was

interested in well-known

photographers such

as Irving Penn, Steve

McCurry, Richard

Avedon , Mario Testino,

Man Ray, Leibovitz.

They inspired me to

start my own career as

a photographer . At first

it was a hobby ,and only

after 2 years I realized

I would like to be a

professional.

Q. What advice do

you have for beginner

photographers?

Here are some advice for

beginners:

1. Don’t be afraid of

shooting whatever you

want, enjoy your process.

2. Be creative, don’t

do the stuff, other

photographers had

already done.

3. Don’t be afraid to try

some experiments, finally

find your team, shooting

is a collaborative effort of

the whole team.

CREATORS

@Emmapearlphoto

Provo, Utah

recently had the opportunity

I to travel south to the desert

with a group of creatives from

Utah. The best part of the trip

was being able to experience

the energy of pure joy radiating

from @simplyb.me as we bathed

in the sunlight and took in the

incredible world around us,

trying our hardest to stop time

and dwell in the desert forever.

@Angiediam Reykjavik, Iceland

There is nothing quite like having the raw landscapes of

Iceland as the setting for your wedding shoot. Towering cliffs,

mighty waterfalls, and dramatic black sand beaches make for the perfect backdrop for

any photoshoot. The only problem? The weather! Locals claim that the weather here

in Iceland changes every five minutes, and from what I have seen, they are right! One

instance has really stayed with me, though, when the weather just would not be nice to

us.

Back when I was starting out, I was assisting an amazing wedding photographer. One

day, we went up to the Snæfellsnes peninsula to shoot a wedding...in the middle of

a storm. Icelandic storms are notorious for their intensity, but you can’t reschedule a

wedding shoot! So, we persevered, carrying endless bags of equipment through relentless

winds, toughing out the cold on top of a cliff, and accepting the fact that we would just

be drenched by waterfalls and ocean water by the end of the shoot. At some point, I went

from being an assistant to becoming a sand bag, as only my full weight could hold down

the light! I suppose, though, the poor bride had it the worst; her dress was sleeveless!

STORIES

Leaping into a void is frightening but,

who doesn’t love a rush of adrenaline

pumping through their veins? I worked

several years for a bank, arriving and

leaving at the same time from Monday to

Friday. Everytime I sat in my desk, I felt

my creative soul slowly fading. Everyday I

wondered what would happen if I kissed

my job goodbye.

People who identify themselves as

creative will get it: you have so

many ideas and plans that they start to

overwhelm you. Do you know how to

lift that tremendous weight off of your

shoulders turning all those ideas into

goals? Well, that’s how I decided to

start my career as a makeup artist.

I wrote down my ideas, set a due

date and pushed myself to reach

them. There are times when my

creative instinct and I hate each

other; sometimes we’re best friends.

In the end, I’d rather be overcome

with that sensation of overpowering

creativity that I can later transform

into lines and colors on somebody

else’s face everyday, than be a person

who can only feel those sensations on the

weekends.

HOW TO BECOME

A SUPERSTAR AT

NETWORKING.

Written by: MATHIEU ROY

Head of Marketing at Creators Magazine

“Here’s our unofficial guide on how to become a

networking superstar and grow your client base! ”

As creatives, our strongest ability is our creativity

and unique personality. Often times we like to rely

on our creative skill and hope it does the job of

finding new clients and growing our network for

us. If you are the type of person who can’t go and

meet new people unless you have prepared in front

of the mirror several times, this guide may give you

some relief.

PREPARATIONS

Once you have decided that going to your next

event will be in your best interest, you need to

know how you are going to start conversations

and have ideas worth sharing and talking about.

It sounds intimidating but honestly, as long as

you present yourself as the expert on your subject

(whatever that may be) you will be drawing in

others around the event who will be engaged with

your conversation.

Here is what you will want to have prepared.

A topic you think would benefit the people

you converse with and an idea to pitch to your

audience. All while remaining genuine and actually

being interested in their work and asking questions.

For example, if I were a photographer looking to get

into the fashion industry and I wanted to get more

clients or referrals, I would talk to every designer I

could find a fashion show or fashion-related event

and chat with them about having outstanding

editorials and product shots would increase their

conversions on their custom designs. Then if they

are interested I can let them know I actually have

a great idea for an editorial I have been dying to

try out and leave them with my business card if

they were interested in getting in touch or learning

more.

WHERE TO FIND EVENTS

Now that you have a general gameplan for the

event, you’ll need to find one to actually attend.

Doing this is as easy as pulling out your phone and

opening up your browser. We don’t make excuses

like, “there’s no events in my area” around here.

Here is a list of the best places to score yourself

new clients, friends or both.

- Meetup.com is a website built for finding likeminded

people hosting events.

-Facebook has a tab that allows you to see all

the events in your area and search them within a

certain radius of where you are or where you are

going to be.

- Local Chamber of Commerce, If you are looking

for more business clients this would be the place to

be.

There are so many other ways to find events but

doing a little bit of research online goes a long way.

We suggest you plan out all the events happening

in your area for the next few months and get them

pencilled into your calendar so you don’t forget!

CLOSING NOTES

Finally, after you make it to the event and begin

meeting everyone don’t forget to really be a genuine

person, it’s easy to tell when someone is just in it

to get something out of the other person. Make

sure everyone enjoys themselves and ask questions,

give opinions and offer ideas when occupying

someone’s time at these events. Always touch base

if people were kind enough to exchange business

cards unless they do it first, then let them know

how much you appreciated their time.

Happy Networking, Superstar.

Q. What was the transformation like going from amateur to

Professional photographer?

I have to say that was a fairly fast transformation. I used to

work as a make up artist and used to own a photo studio . I

was always on the set watching how people used lighting and

then one day I just picked up a camera and used my hair stylist

as a model. My models at that time were my own colleagues:

make up artist, stylists, people I have met through the make up

jobs. It was about a year until I felt confident to charge people

money for my job.

I remember my first job was published in Maltese magazine

and that felt absolutely awesome. Then came a publication in

Haya magazine (one of the biggest magazines in the Middle

East) and since then, I always strive to improve. This job never

drains me and there’s always something to learn to get better

....

Q. Where did you learn all of your skills in the industry?

I’m self taught. I used to work in an advertising company so I

had knowledge of photoshop and illustrator, so it helped me

a lot when I decided to become a photographer. I have to say

my route to the leading lighting was magazines ... I used to

buy vogue, bazaar and other leading magazines and look at the

images. It was mainly the advertising photos that I would spend

time studying. I would look how the light would hit the clothes,

face, hair and, step by step, I would try to put my own signature

on photos. Until now, I’ve always looked at the eyes of the

model on the photo.. the eyes tell a story of what light has been

used, reflectors they used, etc

Q. We love ALL of your work, How do you come up with

such incredibly unique photoshoots?

I’m really passionate about my work and I’m also lucky I

was able to shoot in the middle east for two years in a row. I

definitely fell in love with the locations, weather and I love

what nature it has to offer. Plus, I have built a fantastic network

out there and it helps to create strong imagery.

Now I’m back in London and I can’t wait to shoot new work

here! :)

Q. What would you tell other inspiring creatives looking to

get started in the industry?

It’s important to have a team. It’s best to find like minded

creatives. It’s really important to NOT give up. Rejections

will happen but continuously do research and find your

signature in photography. Remember that you need to be able

to be versatile. Challenge yourself and set yourself goals. Be

personable and, yes, treat your equipment with love and get

insurance. :)

STORIES

ver Easter, I traveled with my family to Spain on holiday. Spending quite some time laying

“Oon the beach reading a book. Inspired by the scenario and the young Spanish crowd

spending their time on the beach, I decided to do a Spanish fashion shoot in the summer when I

was coming back. I contacted my favorite local model that I photographed for another project while

I was there over Easter. Finding a local makeup artist was quite challenging. After multiple replies in

Spanish, I finally found someone who could reply to me in English.

122

CREATORSMAG.COM

After a few messages back and forth I realized that everything she was sending me went through

Google translate. And you might know, Google translate is not always as accurate as we want it to

be. In the end, we figured everything out and I booked her for the shoot. We met at my place to do

makeup. Having the model translate for me when I had requests or questions for the make up artist

was quite challenging but worth it in the end. When the makeup was done I went over the clothes

the model brought and picked my favorites. We drove to the beach and started shooting. We did

multiple looks around the beach, in the ocean, and by the cliffs. In the end, my favorite ones are the

ones with the orange cliff as a background. I had a wonderful time working with these two amazing

girls and shooting for the 3rd time in Spain. I cannot wait to travel and shoot in more countries in

the future! When shooting with people from a different place and different coulture you learn so

much more than shooting where you live. you get new challenges you didn’t even think of and get a

lesson for a lifetime!”-Annsy

Q. What got you interested in Modeling and how did you master the art?

I was always fascinated by Models growing up for some reason. But it wasn’t until I

got scouted multiple times by different agencies that I started to consider it for a job.

I definitely wouldn’t say I’ve mastered the art, although if I’m feeling comfortable

with the photographer the end result will always turn out better. I actually used to

be so camera shy and hated having my photo taken. So it took me a little while to

get used to it. Also it doesn’t hurt to take some acting courses. This is really good tip!

Your connection to the camera, facial expressions and body language will definitely

benefit from this.

Q. What is your favorite style of modeling? Beauty, Fashion, conceptual, etc?

I’d have to say my favourite style of modelling is conceptual. It’s just so much fun to

have all these aspect like styling, lighting, setting and mood all play together to create

a moment. It’s almost like acting at times too. Just mute.

Q.How has your experience been in the industry so far? Have you been able to

travel abroad?

One of my favourite parts of modelling is that I get the opportunity to see so many

different parts of the world. All of 2018 I travelled abroad with work. I’d recommend

doing the overseas work trips to anyone who has the opportunity to, because I’ve

met so many incredible people whom I’m still in contact with and consider best

friends of mine. I’ve been very lucky to have had some really cool roommates from

all over the world.

Q. How did you get represented by so many agencies?

Throughout the past two years of modelling my mother agency has been placing me

with agencies overseas. Whenever I have time to travel abroad, they contact agencies

in the city I want to travel to. Usually the on-stay trips I’ve been doing have involved

2 months in one place, doing castings on a daily basis. So far I have agencies in

Milan, Miami, Athens, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Cape Town. All

so culturally different and beautiful in their own way.

Q. What tips do you have for beginner models

trying to build connections in the industry?

I think the rule every model should stick to

no matter a beginner or if you’ve been in the

industry for a while, is to genuinely be nice to

everyone on set. Any one of them could have you

in mind for an upcoming job. Plus you’ll enjoy

working on another level if you get to know the

people around you.

Q. What has been one of your favorite projects

to work on?

I recently did a really fun shoot with one of my

favourite makeup artists, where he transformed

me into a completely different person with huge

Afro type of hair with a lot of green and glitter

involved for the eye shadow. I really enjoy those

type of jobs when you’re playing around a bit

and dressing up. I also had the opportunity to

shoot with the coolest photographer in Cape

Town. As it was a test shoot, it was just him and

I joking ideas for the concept. I did my own

makeup and hair, and we both brought outfits

along. We drove along the coast and shot it the

most incredible locations. It is definitely one of

my favourite shoots to date.

Q. Are you pursuing modeling full time? and

How often are booked for jobs?

I’ve currently decided to stay in my home

country for a while. There’s isn’t enough work

available in Copenhagen to call it full time. So

I’m also working at a restaurant on the side, and

hope to study again later this year.

Q. Do you attend lot’s of castings and for those

that have never been to one, describe what a

casting is like? Is it very competitive?

I only attend castings when I’m working

overseas. In Denmark clients usually select the

models through direct bookings. Which makes

life a lot easier for everyone. I remember my

first casting was in Istanbul when I was 19. It

was one of the most nerve wracking experiences

ever. Every casting is different. But usually you’ll

be lining up. this can take anywhere between

1 minute to 5 hours. then once it’s your turn

you hand over a comp/set card to the casting

director. If they’re interested in your look your

photo will be placed in the “yes” pile along with

a bunch of others, and sometimes they’ll get you

to try some of their clothes or products on to see

how you suit their brand. If you’re lucky enough

to score the job they’ll book you through your

agency where all the details are sent over. The

casting process becomes less joyable if you view

it competitively in my opinion. The key is not to

take the “no’s” personally. Of course that’s easier

said than done at times.

Q. Describe your personality in three words!

Ahhh.. this is always such a difficult one to

answer. But if I asked someone close to me

to describe me in 3 words, I believed they’d

describe me as loyal, smiling and a little weird

haha
