IOC Chef Rogge : 

Sicherheit Hauptproblem in Rio 

Im Bereich Sicherheit sieht Jacques Rogge die größte 

Herausforderung bei Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. "Das ist 

das wichtigste Thema bei den Spielen seit München 1972", 

erklärte der Präsident des Internationalen Olympischen 

Komitees (IOC) in einem Interview mit der brasilianischen 

Sport-Tageszeitung Lance. 

"Ich sage nicht, Rio sei nicht in der Lage, dieses Thema zu 

meistern. Aber wir sprechen über Menschenleben", machte 

Rogge angesichts der zunehmenden Gewalt in der 

brasilianischen Metropole klar. Er räumte allerdings ein, kein 

Land der Welt sei sicher vor möglichen Anschlägen.

Overall Crime and Safety Situation 

• In 2011, significant progress was made in reducing Rio de 

Janeiro’s legendary, critical crime rates. 

• The centerpiece of this effort is the Favela Pacification Program 

(FPP) whereby specially recruited and police officers trained in 

community policing enter Rio’s favelas (slums), expel drug gang 

members and other armed criminal elements, and establish a 

permanent presence, called a Unidade de Policia Pacificadora 

(UPP).
