The waste is usuallydumped to avoid disposalcosts.” Those who havebeen the target or victim ofthese despicable acts areoften left considerably out ofpocket and frustrated withCouncils.During the Covidlockdown, most of thecommercial and householdtips around the county havebeen closed at the sametime as many of us haveundertaken maintenancearound the home andgarden, leaving us indesperate need of licensedwaste carriers to dispose ofour rubbish.At one location in thecounty, residents witnessedtwo males dispose of a vanload of builder’s waste inbroad daylight; they dulyreported the individuals,backed up with CCTV andphotos, to the Council, onlyto be told that “The Councildo not investigate fly-tippingon private land”. However,after further calls from theresidents the Council didtake up the investigationalongside colleagues fromDurham Constabulary andthe investigation is on-going.In response to callsfrom the WCNG, Ian Hoult,Durham County Council’sCredit: Crook Policeneighbourhood protectionmanager, said: “We do notwant to see our beautifulcounty marred by selfishacts of fly-tipping so takeany reports of it extremelyseriously.“Whenever we receive areport, be it about a fly-tipon public or private land, wewill look to investigate with aview to taking action againstthose responsible. In thiscase, we visited the locationas part of our enquiries anddiscovered the fly-tip to beon private property.“As with any incidenton private property theresponsibility for clearingthe waste lies with thelandowner although we didleave stickers on it to makethem aware that we wereinvestigating.“We will be contactingthose responsible for theproperty as part of ourefforts to get the wasteremoved, and asking forsight of CCTV footage whichhas been mentioned to us.We have been successfulat bringing down theamount of fly-tipping inCounty Durham overalland will continue with ourwork on this. Residentscan help by ensuring theydispose of their wasteresponsibly and we wouldwelcome information aboutthose that tarnish theenvironment by dumpingtheir waste.”Financial support duringthe Covid-19 outbreakTHE Covid-19 pandemicand lockdown is having anunprecedented effect ofthe finances of individualsand families throughout thearea.In order to support peoplethrough the crisis, DurhamCounty Council have puttogether a list of the supportthat is currently availableduring this fast changingsituation.The list includes a numberof key areas such as counciltax, housing benefit andother benefits.To find out more visit:http://www.durham.gov.uk/covid19moneyWeardale Community News, June 2020Page 7‘Kind Kids’ praised during theCovid-19 pandemicTHE Weardale CommunityNews invited readers tonominate children whohave been helping theircommunities during thelockdown.We’ve been runningthe campaign through ourFacebook page and have sofar awarded three childrena ‘Kind Kids’ certificate andgift pack.Grace Clark, the elevenyear old daughter of localbusinesswoman Kim Clarkfrom Evenwood, undertooka 5 mile sponsored run toraise money for NHS staff.“My little princess took itupon herself to set this up onher Instagram.” Kim said tothe WCNG, “It’s a mammoth5 mile run. Up to now, shehas raised £95 and it’s all offof her own back. It’s her ownidea and is completely out ofher comfort zone. We are soproud of her.“Grace is autistic so weare making arrangementsfor the run to be in hergrandparents’ garden atBolam. We’ve measured afull circle at 1.1 miles. Gracewill attempt to run 5 fullcircles at noon - so she caneat lunch afterwards”.Kim herself set aboutcooking and providing mealsto vulnerable people andfront line workers shortlyafter lockdown. As of May4th, she had provided nearly8000 meals out of her10,000 target. With the kindsupport of her family, friendsand volunteers, ‘Team Kim’have never stopped. Thesecreations are inspired by allof the rainbows appearing inthe windows of neighbours,friends, and family.Her proud parents havebeen overwhelmed bythe interest and supportthat people are showingin Kristina’s handmadecreations. “It’s been sopopular that we havehad to order more beadsand keychains” said Jane.“Kristina has been hard atwork making these keyringsand popularity is growing bythe day.
