The“Peculiar Children” of the title possessspecial abilities, like the power to reanimatedead creatures or shoot fire fromtheir fingers. For this story of a teenageboy (Asa Butterfield) who uncovers afamily mystery that involves a handfulof those children, invisible monstersknown as Hollows, and time travel, Mr.Riggs built his narrative around vintagephotographs he collected.“I liked Ransom’s approach with thepictures,” Mr. Burton said in a phoneinterview from Los Angeles. “It was aninteresting kind of way to create a story.It made it feel like a weird old fable.”For the production, Mr. Burton sketchedcharacters, props and more. Here,he explains why he decided to put clotheson evil creatures and how he cameto storyboard a feast of human eyeballs.Conceiving the PeculiarsThis is Hugh (Milo Parker), a Peculiarwho has a wild hive of bees living insideof him. Mr. Burton’s simple sketchshows the intensity of the characterusing only dots to illustrate the bees.“I didn’t do too many sketches of thekids because I didn’t want to do threedrawings and try to cast the kids to looklike that,” he said. “This was just a littlemore my process, my doodles really,”Mr. Burton said. “Doodling these littlethings helps me to get thoughts from theinside out.”Barron’s ExperimentThis scene is from an experiment conductedby the creepy villain, Barron(Samuel L. Jackson), who has evolvedfrom a Hollow and is trying to achieveimmortality. The helmet has a sinister,torturous medieval yet industrial lookthat Mr. Burton came up with after earlierdesigns left him dissatisfied.“I had a lot of artists working onthings, and the helmets were lookingoverly elaborate, overly cartoonish, likefrom an old Disney movie,” Mr. Burton
