WELCOME &
MEET THE TEAM
On behalf of myself, and all of the team at Newcastle Racecourse,
we would like to express our thanks to everyone involved in today’s
Betfair Northumberland Plate meeting.
With plenty of uncertainty over the past months, we have been delighted to have been closley involved in the
resumption of racing in Britain and to host what is a highlight of our summer flat programme this afternoon.
We once again welcome a fantastic partner in Betfair, in their second year of headline sponsorship of the
meeting, which for the first time sees the Northumberland Plate and Vase run alongside the Chipchase and
Hoppings Stakes as well as the Gosforth Park Cup all on the same day.
Equally, our thanks must go specifically to everyone at BHA, along with all of those associated with today’s race
meeting, including jockeys, trainers, racing staff and everyone else. Whilst we are still unable to welcome the
crowds we would be used to be seeing here for Betfair Northumberland Plate Day, we are delighted that the
action will be broadcast across the nation on both Sky Sports Racing and on terrestrial television via ITV Racing.
I would like to specifically thank all of the racehorse owners who have supported the racecourse both today
and at our meetings that have taken place throughout this month. I would like to wish all of those involved in
today’s meeting the best of luck, and we look forward to welcoming you back on course as soon as possible.
Since the return of racing at the beginning of June, a total of six horses went on from winning here at
Newcastle to win at Royal Ascot last week. These included Henry Ponsonby and Alan King’s 2019 Betfair
Northumberland Plate winner Who Dares Wins, once again ridden by Tom Marquand. We hope that the likes
of Palace Pier, Frankly Darling and Lord North may go on to some of the glories achieved by Stradivarius and
Enable who also ran here early in their careers. Hopefully, we might even see some more stars this afternoon.
Finally, thanks from everyone associated with the racecourse to all of the NHS and key workers who have been
doing such a tremendous job on behalf of us all at this difficult time. To you, and all of our loyal customers,
thank you and we look forward to welcoming you back as soon as we can.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
Br
Br
Br
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but
at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to
enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of
the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers
aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum
conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties
or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to
calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of
each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to
a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest
hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating.
Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY This should be one-way traffic, with TILSIT the clear pick on the strength of his
highly promising debut near miss over C&D earlier this month. He pulled a long way clear of the third that
day and this well-bred colt is open to plenty of improvement. Brazen Bolt and Summer Escape are taken to
fill the places, though Miracle Eagle’s debut was not devoid of promise and she also has each-way claims.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: FAYATHAAN trained by R Fahey, Malton, 90 miles.
RACE SUMMARY Mark Johnston’s 2-y-os have been typically fast off the blocks this season and
TOUSSAROK could be another winning juvenile for the yard. He ticks plenty of the right boxes on paper
and confidence behind him in the betting would be an ominous sign. Inhaler made a winning start at
Pontefract and has to be feared, despite the penalty, while Fayathaan is another noteworthy newcomer.

WEIGHTWATCHER: STAXTON won off a handicap mark of 95, his rating is now down 5lb to 90.
LONGEST TRAVELLER: TABDEED trained by Owen Burrows, Lambourn, 285 miles.
RACE SUMMARY It’s probably best to forgive TABDEED for a disappointing display in Group 3
company at Ascot when last seen in October, given that he has otherwise looked progressive during his
stop-start career. There’s an air of unfinished business about this 5-y-o and his record when fresh augurs well
ahead of this assignment. Staxton has slipped to an attractive mark and is feared most ahead of Gunmetal.

RACE SUMMARY The manner of MUBAKKER’s reappearance success in a C&D handicap strongly
suggested that he is ready for this step up in grade. Sir Michael Stoute’s charge can confirm that impression
by seeing off established pattern-class sprinters Brando, Judicial and Major Jumbo. Brando was below par in
the Abernant at Newmarket but he should be sharper now and may pose the greatest threat to Mubakker.

RACE SUMMARY There was much to like about the way MAGICAL SPIRIT did the job on return at
Beverley and, armed with scope for further improvement, this 8lb higher mark may not be enough to stop
him. El Hombre, who was a close third in this last year, and recent Haydock winner Venturous both look
dangerous. Lahore had a couple of these behind when striking at Doncaster and is another to consider.

RACE SUMMARY Preference in this trappy-looking contest is for AL KOUT, who shaped well when
third behind a couple of unexposed 4-y-os at Wolverhampton and is now 4lb below his last winning mark.
Mondain is a likely pace angle and it would be no surprise were he to make a bold bid from the front off his
reduced mark. Glan Y Gors completed the hat-trick in good style at Pontefract and also enters calculations.
