HORSE WELFARE
Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more tousthan looking after the horses that make
us the North East’s Premier Racecourse.Wedoeverythinginour powertoensurethat we providea
racing surfaceofthe highest qualityand we take everyconceivable caretominimise the chances of
horses incurring anyinjurywhilst here.
Regrettably, asinany highly competitivesport, there areoccasions when something goes wrong and
horses have to be giventhe very best veterinary care.
Thereare three Veterinary Surgeons heretodaytoensurethatshouldany horse needhelp they will be
attended to within seconds of anyincident occurring.Their first priorityistomake arapid diagnosis
and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs
attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will
transportthe horse back to thestables wherefurther treatmentand assessmentcan be undertaken.
Occasionally, itmay be thatthe natureofthe injuryissuch thatahorse is unable to make arecovery.
If this is the case the Veterinaryteam may take the decision to put thehorse down straightaway. In
these circumstances weshould remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option
is kindest forthe horse.
