With great pride our extraordinary efforts continue to serve all our communities, providing an essential service needed
now more than ever.We have and will continue to make our employment conditions as safe as possible for all of us.
Yes, we are serving our customers, but we also serve the needs of each other, our families, and our loved ones financially
and emotionally. Our jobs are essential and allow everyone to provide for our families, while many others will go without
this week and, potentially, weeks to come.
WHAT does this mean?
It means we must follow all the directions and advice provided by our President, our Governor, the medical experts, as
well as the guidance provided by the Company specifically for our workplace.
∙ Limit your contact with others, do not go to areas where people congregate
∙ Wash your hands frequently
∙ Clean and Disinfect frequently touched surface in your work and home area
(doorknobs, light switches, countertops, cell/phones, keyboard, bathrooms, sinks)
∙ Keep at least 6 feet away from other people
∙ Avoid “going out” for eating, social occasions etc.
∙ If you are sick, do not come to work and call your supervisor immediately
∙ Drivers - Minimize the amount of time you spend in or around offices and/ or facilities
∙ Limit any travel, stay home as much as possible
If one infected employee appears at work, many others could be affected, and the result may require many to stay home
for a minimum of 2 weeks. Please avoid the temptations of congregating or venturing out into any potentially higher risk
environments. Please stay home! We will continue to implement changes in operations rapidly and use available
technologies to further the social distancing advantages we have in our company. These efforts will only continue to be
successful if our movements outside of work are totally limited.
We all must focus on everyone’s safety and health so we can continue to work and provide for our families. This is the
time for our team to shine, as it always does! We will get through this together.
Thank you and God bless,
Frank M. Antonacci and the Antonacci Family
Telemedicine Now Included in Health Plan

19 Wheeler Street: A Historic Site with a New Purpose
The first thing you may notice at 19 Wheeler Street
in New Haven is the interesting architecture such
as brick arches and wooden beams throughout the
building. These unique features offer a glimpse of
the expansive and varied history of the site.
In the early 1800's this site, which sits along the
Quinnipiac River, was used as a fertilizer and acid
manufacturing facility. In 1860, two shipbuilding
companies, Pook and Bushnell and Warren C
Nettleton, built gunboats for the Civil War on the
site. Both firms sold their land in 1878 to ES
Wheeler, for whom the street is now named.
Wheeler, who established a small wire company
on Temple Street in New Haven, created the New
Haven Wire Company on these new sites in 1890.
This company was sold and renamed half a dozen
times before becoming the National Wire
Company. Overwhelmed by demand for steel wire
at the turn of the century, the building was
destroyed by a fire in 1901. It was immediately
rebuilt on a larger scale including the brick arches
and Douglas fir beams still on site today, but
inflation and bankruptcy burdened the company
until it was sold to the US Steel Corporation and
renamed American Steel and Wire Company in
1907.
By 1929, newspapers heralded the facility as
“ranking with the most important industrial
establishments in New Haven.” The company
boasted modern benefits such as an onsite
surgeon for employees and their families, a
summer outing for families, a Christmas party,
home purchasing program and pensions. The
company also offered instructions on hygiene
sanitation, infant care and general domestic
welfare.
In the 1940s, the War Production Board honored
American Steel in New Haven for breaking 6
different production records in 5 months. Wartime
demands for steel, however, left the company
struggling to keep up, even at its peak employment
of 1100 people. An excerpt from a 1945 paper
read:
"Bombs Away. Tons of destruction releases by slim
steel cables- hardly thicker than a tiny baby’s little
finger- go hurtling earthward from the open bomb
bays of huge planes to destroy vital enemy
installations or disrupt military movements with
devasting force…the American Steel and Wire
company at 238 Fairmont Avenue is faced with the
problem of supplying the increasing demand
without sufficient help to man the machines.”
Continued on Page 4
NEWSLETTER PAGE 4
Eventually war time demand slowed and in the
1950's the company revamped its image, offering
family friendly tours of the facility and being
"earnest in its effort to be a good neighbor." One of
the common messages offered by the company to
the community was “members of the management
team have consistently demonstrated an active
interest in the support of worthy community
programs, thereby perpetuating the high principles
of industrial citizenship.”
American Wire and Steel was once one of the
largest mills of its kind in the country,
manufacturing steel wires and cables for industries
ranging from fishing, lumber, construction and
mining industries as well as for ships, airplanes,
elevators, bridges, and automobiles. It is credited
as an important contributor to the industrial
development to New Haven, until its doors
shuttered in 1979 due to the recession.
Several decades of steel production left the land
the site sits on a brownfield, so the city purchased
it and sold it to the New Haven Terminal for the
storage of steel products in 1984. In 1997, Harbor
Holdings began operating a solid waste facility on
site which changed hands many times before
being operated by Murphy Road Recycling and All
American Waste in 2007.
While supporting its community at home, American
Steel was also supporting the rebuilding of Europe.
An important tramway used to bring gravel, cement
and sand throughout France during construction of
the Chastang Dam was designed and built at this
New Haven facility.

Meet our
Interns
Gabrielle Williams: GreatHorse
My name is Gabrielle Williams and I am a senior at Minnechaug Regional High School. My
plans after high school are to go to my top school Roger Williams and major in English.
English is my first choice, but my experience here may possibly sway me to pursue a career
in marketing. On my first day as an intern at Greathorse, I arrived not knowing what to
expect. As soon I walked through the door, everyone was so kind and supportive. They
asked me questions about myself and instantly made me feel welcome. I am so excited to
have the opportunity to intern at Greathorse. I have only been here for a short time, but I
always look forward to what the day holds and what I will be doing. During my time here I
have found myself learning something new every day, and I am very excited to see where I
go from here and what the future holds!
Ben Murphy: USA Enfield
My name is Ben Murphy and I am a Junior Accounting Major at Western New
England University in Springfield, Massachusetts. What I liked most about my
time here at USA Hauling has been expanding my knowledge on certain software
programs such as Tower and Excel. The people here are very welcoming and
answer any questions I have. They help me understand certain tasks I have
worked on, whether it is working the copier or changing filters in the Tower
software. My plans for the future are to acquire my master’s degree from Western
New England, pass the CPA exam, and to work in an accounting firm in the
Hartford area.
Hannah Stertzel: USA Enfield
My name is Hannah Stertzel and I am currently at Springfield College working on my M.S. in
Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I started off as a Human Resources Intern and then
got the opportunity to stay as a Human Resources Assistant. Within these roles I was able
to work on updating the employee handbooks, data entry, filing, conducting onboarding and
termination processes, and assisting with the transition into our new Human Resources
Information System (HRIS) Paychex Flex. I really enjoyed the working environment, my
fellow employees, the opportunities for growth, and of course Pizza Fridays. I learned a lot
about Human Resources from my supervisor Michelle and the rest of the Human Resources
team. I also got to learn a little about marketing from working with April and Jon on a variety
of tasks. Unfortunately, I will be leaving USA Hauling & Recycling in late May 2020. I will be
conducting my master’s degree research remotely in Austin, TX where I hope to obtain an
entry level position within Human Resources.
Myles Murren: USA Enfield
I am currently a senior attending Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. My major is in Business
Administration which means that I have the ability to grow my knowledge in multiple fields such as finance,
operations, marketing, human resources, and general management. I am looking forward to learning about the
technology that USA Hauling and Recycling uses in their daily operations in order to categorize and review inventory.
By learning this, I will be able to help with research and development of pricing proposals as well as formulate
competitive analyses. My future plans are to continue learning and growing within a professional environment to find
out which field of business I most enjoy and excel in.

What we're reading . . .
This quarter’s book recommendation comes from Anna Malaquias!
Sutton by J.R. Moehringer is about Willie Sutton who was born in the squalid Irish
slums of Brooklyn and came of age at a time when banks were out of control.
Trapped in a cycle of bank panics, depressions and soaring unemployment,
Sutton saw only one way out, only one way to win the girl of his dreams. So
began the career of America's most successful bank robber.
“Growing up, I have always been fascinated with stories from history, so when I
find a book that is based on a true person or set of events I am sold. This book
had me captivated from the moment Sutton started telling his story. I wanted to
know more and more as he told his life of crime, fell in love, and explained his life.
An entire world exists in the pages of this book.”

Coaching Workshop Rundown
By Kelley Burgess
On Thursday, February 6, 2020, we had a workshop
at Greathorse with Teamalytics. All managers from
all departments/companies were invited. The goal
for the workshop was Teambuilding. We watched
an interview with Bill Belichick at the start of the
workshop and discussed what we heard from him.
We reviewed the 5 universal fears and needs of
people, our Company Promise, and our principles.
We also learned what the makeup of most teams
looks like and how we can communicate better and
hold our teams accountable. After all of this we
watched the Bill Belichick interview again and
discussed what we heard this time from him.
The difference in what stood out to me at the
beginning versus the second time around of
watching the video was amazing. I heard what I
thought were negative comments from Bill when I
first watched the interview. After our coaching
session, I realized it wasn’t negative at all and that I
really need to watch what I focus on. I walked out of
there with a great feeling and a plan to make a
change.
Since the coaching session, I have applied what I
have learned with my team as well as my 5 year old
daughter. I have also found a couple more “truth
tellers” to hold me accountable when I am not
holding up to the Company Promise. I am excited
that the plan is to have more of these coaching
sessions; as I feel they call me out on my
constraints and teach me how to change my ways. I
also really appreciate the investment that this
company puts into its managers and employees.
We wouldn’t have these sessions if they didn’t want
us to succeed.
New Tool Allowance Program
The Company has created a new tool allowance to
supplement the cost of hand tools and specialty
tools required by an equipment mechanic, a

the end of the 12-month period.
Proposed deadline for receipt submission to

reimbursed by July 31, 2020. A list of employees
eligible to receive the reimbursements will be

Getting to Know …
John Thompson
Customer Service Representative, Enfield, CT
Can you tell us about your career here and the changes you’ve seen?
I’ve been here for 30 plus years and have had a few different jobs. I started
out as a roll-off driver and did that for over 20 years. I spent a few years in
customer service before starting up the wire shop with John Pizzimenti then went back to customer service
where I am now. I’m often asked to help with trainings so I can share my experience as a roll-off driver and
give a unique perspective on what a driver would see. I’ve also been here for a while, so I’m able to help
navigate the complexity of the companies.
One of the bigger changes in the trash industry I’ve seen from the 80’s and 90’s is how volume reduction of
trash is handled. When I drove, we just dumped our load in a mud hole and the sorters would take out what
could be salvaged. Now, we have state of the art volume reducing facilities that sort everything. It’s a big
change and exciting to see the transition.
What is your favorite part of working here?
It feels like home. For over 30 years I’ve been able to create a good life for myself by working here. They
are employers that want you to succeed as an employee and offer you whatever you need to do your job. I
don’t think there’s many employers around like that anymore.
What’s your most memorable facepalm moment?
I got a call from a lady who couldn’t find her cat and thought she might have put it out in a garbage bag. I
immediately called dispatch that contacted the driver who stopped and checked for the cat. She called
back later to say she had found the cat safe in her house.
Do you have any words of advice for new employees?
Word hard, work safe and take pride in what you do. Don’t ever minimize your job – everyone has an
important role!
What would we most likely find
you doing on the weekend?
Working on projects (I have a long
honey-do list), a little fishing and
spending time with my grandson,
Wesley. He has my heart.
