June on Zoom
June was a memorable month on Zoom for Beit Luria. Besides regular Shabbat services, our Shavuot
celebrations kicked off with a short service led by Rabbi Julia. We were then presented with a talk on
Judaism and suicide by Maddie Hicklin, after which we took part in a fun cheesecake decorating
competition. The winners can be found in our Beit Luria Shavuot cookbook. We then joined the rest of the
South Africa Progressive shuls for a night of learning. Shavuot morning consisted of a National service.
Beit Luria was fortunate to host psychologist, Jenna Bayer. Jenna, a transgender member of our
community spoke on social stigma - from the workplace to in our own lives and that of children. Jenna
provided ample food for thought and helpful coping mechanisms. If you missed the talk, you can watch it
on the Beit Luria Facebook page.
