The Text in the Painting
Cultural identity is nothing fixed, nothing
static, no "state of being", but a process.
While the mathematical identity A = A
speaks of eternal self-equality, cultural
identity is an ongoing process in which precisely
the non-equals take on a single form.
It is not the sum of the identical, but the
integration of the heterogeneous. This is
what Pythagoras called "friendship": the
union of the heterogeneous. For him a hu‐

The Text in the Painting
The method of palimpsest, as I apply
it, is not an archaeological process
that makes the past visible as the
past.
Rather, it is a visualization that brings
the deeper, previous, contradictory
and inner Other into a present.
