Welcome to the 5th edition of the UWC East Africa Student

Magazine. I’m very excited to share that the 4th edition is

about to reach 1,000 reads!

As you already know, June was an eventful month, with the

protests against George Floyd’s outraging murder supporting

the Black Lives Matter movement being the highlight. The

UWCEA community has shown strong sympathy towards

the protests, spreading awareness on social media about the

events, and hosting important discussions regarding this

topic.

Read this issue to learn more about racism and its impact, a

brief recap of our first year as students at UWC East Africa,

World Environment Day, the complicated situation in Iraq,

and much more!

As always, if you have any feedback, or you would like to

contribute with an article, be featured on the photography

section, or advertise, don’t hesitate to send me an email.

Black lives matter is a movement

that’s been going on since 2013 to

protest police brutality after George

Zimmerman was acquitted of all his

crimes involving the murder of

seventeen year old Travon Martin.

Ever since, the movement has shed

light to the brutality and suffering

that African Americans have been

enduring with little to no justice.

From harassment and unfair

treatment from police, to murder in

broad daylight. Names such as

Sandra Bland, Oscar Grant, Tamir

Rice, Philando Castile and so many

others have gone from living citizens

to headlines and hashtags. For the

longest time Black people have tried

every form of protest, all of which

have either been futile or resulted in

negative effects, affecting their jobs

and general livelihood. Malcom X,

MLK, Kaepernick, Tupac and other

influencers have all been punished

for speaking up and standing up for

themselves and others in the face of

human race is at right now. All

protests are a reaction to years of

unfairness and injustice. Coupled

with the dissatisfaction with the way

the government dealt with the

r e p e r c u s s i o n s o f C O V I D - 1 9

Nationwide and the recent murders

of Ahmaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor

and George Floyd, many American

citizens realized their strength in

numbers and took to the streets to

protests the violent nature in which

police have constantly treated Black

Americans and People of color.

Although there has been progress

with the complete defunding of

police departments in Universities

and the Minnesota State Police,

passing of the Breonna Law and

reviewing of many wrongfully

sentenced individuals, many of

these cases would not go to court

and get the justice they deserve

without public outrage which

shouldn’t be the case. In the past

week alone, five Black Americans

of the Klu Klux Klan in several parts

of America and Black girls continue

to go missing from protests. Similar

conversations and protests have

been ignited in other parts of the

world that are either showing

solidarity with black people or

fighting the same injustices in their

country. In Brazil where Black youths

are killed every 23 minutes or in

Kenya where police abuse their

to the point of death after they

disobey the COVID-19 curfew.

Examples like these bring up the

issue of colorism in a country like

Brazil that is highly diverse and it is

almost impossible to tell who is

Black and who isn’t or classism and

elitism in East Africa where the rich

and elite aren’t affected by the

curfew as they depend on lower

class citizens to work for their profit

who are in return risking and losing

their lives.

Police brutality is a very small part of

a crooked system that’s built on

oppressing, lynching and profiting

off of the backs of Black people and

people of color the same way it did

400 years ago during slavery.

Racism and capitalism work

together and can not exist without

the other. Businesses and essentially

the world are run on the underpaid

and overworked laborers who gain

virtually nothing and the police are

an organization kept in place to

defend the interests of the rich, elite

and upper class. It’s a system that

ensures generational wealth from

colonizer to Klan member while the

countries that were/are stolen from

in Africa and the Middle East remain

impoverished and in the dark where

sentence than it would a white

person facing the same charges, so

they can use them in modern day

slavery for companies like KFC and

Starbucks while paying them less

than a dollar. It’s the police patrolling

predominantly Black neighborhoods

more often than predominantly

white neighborhoods so they can

ensure this industry thrives, it’s the

right to proper healthcare being

compromised by gender critical

laws, its judges, people in the

healthcare systems, your very own

It’s a system that floods guns and

drugs to our neighborhoods so the

youth are busy earning off of the

very things that’ll kill them, so your

only chance at greatness is either

making music or sports because

that’s all you’re good for, standing

ovations and entertainment. It’s

64,000-75000 missing Black

women and girls and no one bats an

eye while over eleven million

pounds has gone into searching for

Madeleine McCann, it’s over 1,400

Mexicans previously held in the

inhumane condition of ICE going

missing overnight with no follow up.

It’s insufficient funds in your

underprivileged school where you

learn a version of history that’s white

washed and not your own, it’s being

denied the work you’re qualified for

because of your hair, your walk, your

slang, your size, your trauma. It’s

getting the minimal position with

the minimal paycheck just to be

discriminated against for your hair,

your walk, your slang, your size, your

trauma. It’s the most powerful man

in the world calling you thugs, your

classmates calling you ghetto, your

teacher calling you loud. It’s white

privilege and you profiting from it

and refusing to acknowledge it for a

better tomorrow. it’s your silence

worldwide problem. Now is the time

more than ever to listen, read,

research and learn, check your

privilege whether it's from a place of

race, gender, class etc. Stop

d e p e n d i n g o n m a r g i n a l i z e d

individuals to teach you things you

should have been taught, things that

those around you have been forced

to learn and live with. Know that not

being racist is not enough, if

everyone you surround yourself with

is racist and will continue to pass on

their racism and you remain implicit

then the problem will never be

solved and you are just as bad as the

perpetrator. Change is now and the

future because there is no way

anyone is nor should accept any

less.

RACISM: MY PERSONAL

It is difficult to talk about the subject

of my experience with racism. Not

because I find racism hard to talk

about, but I am simply getting tired

of talking about it - it feels

exhausting and unfruitful at times. I

will say that racism isn’t something

you experience once or multiple

times in separate events, racism is

something that can and is affecting

b l a c k p e o p l e’s l i v e s i n a l l

communities (including ours in

Moshi, Tanzania) every single day.

While sometimes we might think

that this issue only impacts some

unfortunate people in historicallyracist

places, this couldn’t be farther

from the truth. I experienced racism

in my own country, a country where

99% of people are Black. Let me

share one of my first experiences of

racism with you. When I was in

primary, one of my black friends and

I were in a club called Rock Painting

club. At that time, the club (for some

popular, everyone wanted to join it,

but there were limited spaces.

When my friend and I got in the

club, the first thing that I noticed

was that there were only three

Black kids in the club. Now, some

people might claim that this may be

because not a lot of Black kids

wanted to join the club; however,

that was not the case, for literally

everyone wanted to join it at the

time, and many, many Black kids

applied.

But discrimination didn’t stop there.

The worst and most enraging

moment of all was when the

teacher in charge told the three

black kids to go outside and finish

painting everyone else’s rocks while

the white kids stayed inside, eating

snacks and watching a movie. My

friend and I had to complete the

work that others should have been

doing with us. On top of that, the

teacher also forced us to apply a

thick layer of some chemical liquid

to the rocks that had an extremely

strong smell, to polish them and

make them look shiny. I think two

out of three of us got terribly sick

the next day because of the

chemicals that the liquid contained.

I now know that at the time we

encountered discrimination and

racism; however, that was only one

of countless examples of racism

that I encountered. There were also

many traditions in primary boarding

h o u s e s t h a t w e r e c l e a r l y

discriminatory; for instance, the

shaving of black male kids' heads

because our hair looked “untidy and

unclean.” I would have known then

that what we faced at the hands of

our teachers was racism… but

unfortunately, we were never

taught these things because racism

is not something that people like to

talk about. I get it, it might

sometimes not be very pleasant to

talk about racism, but this is

definitely not an excuse. My

experience with racism clearly

shows how important it is to start

informing young children about

these issues - because if we really

want a change, it needs to start

from the very beginning. If we fail

to do this, everyone gets used to

The leaders of the UWC East

Africa must join forces with the

staff and the students to ensure

that racism and discrimination is

being constantly and thoroughly

addressed to every single person

of the community - otherwise,

we risk ending up being a

generation that is ignorant, and

that allows ethnicity get in the

way of equality.

Hold on a second… Earth day was in

April, right? Sure was, but June 5th

was World Environment Day. World

Environment Day was created by

the United Nations to stimulate

awareness and motivate political

action. The primary goal is to

promote ways in which all of us

earthlings can help better the

environment.

How it began

Way back in the year 1972, World

Environment Day was created to

commemorate the opening of the

Stockholm Conference on the

H u m a n E n v i r o n m e n t . T h e

Stockholm Conference on the

Human Environment was the

Un i t e d N a t i o n s’ f i r s t m a j o r

conference on the topic of

international environmental issues.

It marked a pivotal shift in the

international approach to the global

environment and got the ball rolling

for many more conferences.

How we celebrate

Countries from Kenya to the US to

New Zealand celebrate World

Environment Day, typically there

are rallies or parades sometimes

even concerts, tree planting

initiatives, and clean-up campaigns.

These events are geared towards

raising social awareness bringing

crowds of people together to

rethink our approach towards the

environment. However, some of

these events reach beyond just

social awareness and direct their

efforts towards political change.

This political change can be in the

form of lobbying for environmental

regulations or the signing of

petitions.

What you can do

Things are a bit different now

though and I would encourage fewer

rallies and parades for the time

being, but you can still have an

impact. For one, take a step back

and look at what you are doing that

is positive for the environment (go

ahead pat yourself on the back) and

look at what you are doing that is

detrimental to the environment.

There may be a few things that you

could change to reduce your

environmental impact. Take, for

example, if you drink primarily from

plastic water bottles but have access

to clean water, you can shift to a

reusable bottle. It may seem simple,

but if we all craft our lifestyles to be

more environmentally friendly it can

have a big impact.

Likewise, look up what petitions or

campaigns you wish to support,

many you can donate to if you

would like to. Here is a link to a few

But of course, if you find an

awesome one that grabs your

interest go ahead and support that

too, the environment can use all the

love it can get!

PT. 1: GLOBAL ISSUES

There are a lot of events that are

happening in the world and each of

them has the same importance, so

we always need to always pay close

attention to what is going on around

us. This article would be discussing

some issues that had a great impact

on some countries and not everyone

knows about it.

In Venezuela, on May 22, the Iranian

flag was raised in the city of Caracas

as a gesture of gratitude towards the

act of solidarity that the Persians

showed towards Venezuelans. This

act consisted of the shipment of 5

ships loaded with gasoline, to supply

the shortage that Venezuela has been

suffering, due to sanctions by the

United States.

Salvador have been affected by

nacional de Kenia, acciones que se

volvieron peores con el inicio del toque

de queda, que los llevó a disparar,

golpear y extorsionar a personas por

dinero…

PT. 2: IRAQ

…On the other hand, here is a story of

Iraq: it all started when the US

invaded Iraq in 2003 and caused a

lot of problems. Starting from the

dismantling of the Iraqi army to the

government institutions becoming

disorganized and inefficient. I was a

little kid when it all happened, but

now, I have a better understanding of

how the situation was back then.

After Saddam Hussain was removed

from power, Iraq entered a state of

chaos, making the country unstable

because the US didn’t build a strong

foundation for the country after they

came to Iraq in 2003. Moreover,

because of that, Iran, Turkey and

Saudi Arabia had their eyes on Iraq

and for them it was a golden ticket to

expand their power in the region. The

situation in the country kept

continuously deteriorating.

In 2007 a civil war started between

the two sects of Islam causing the

people to flee out of the country to

save their lives. After all, it was not

safe for Sunni to live in Shia

districts and for Shia to live in

Sunni districts because of the

corruption of the political parties

and them not caring about the

interests of the Iraqi people so

they could show their loyalty to

neighboring countries. Life was

hard for the people living in Iraq

because corruption was under

every stone in the government’s

institutions. Plus, the fact that

there were a lot of militias

supported by neighbor countries

(especially Iran) made the situation

difficult to deal with, after the

withdrawal of the US troops from

Iraq in 2011.

After a couple of years, in 2014,

ISIS started advancing towards

Iraqi territories and they controlled

a large part of Iraq, so a lot of

people had to leave their homes to

find a safe place to shelter in. We

lost a lot of soldiers in a very

devastating attack in Tikrit, where

more than 1700 soldiers were

massacred in camp Speicher

because ISIS was heading towards

Baghdad. ISIS was defeated and

the reign of terror was put to an

end in 2017 due to the great

Iraq lost their loved ones throughout

the years because every time the

situation begins to stabilize, we get

surprised by an event that alters the

balance of the country. This caused

tension in the daily lives of the

people, and one incident that

happened on the last days of

Ramadan in 2016 made the people

anxious about the current situation in

the country, it was the Karada

incident where more than 300

people died and hundreds were

injured.

After years of oppression, people

came together against the corrupted

government to take back their rights

and freedom, because they made

Iraq a war zone for neighboring

countries to solve their conflicts

without paying any attention to

the needs of the people. The

protest started in October 2019

and a lot of people went to the

streets, demanding change in the

corrupted policies which are

supported by Iran to push their

agendas in Iraq. What happened is

that the government started to

oppress the protest by using tear

gas and live ammunition against

the protesters, killing more than

800 protesters and thousands

more got injured because of these

inhumane acts. Meanwhile, some

Irani militias lead by Soleimani

started to kidnap activists and

torture them to silence their

voices, but in the end, the will of

the people was stronger than any

bullet . More people started going

into the streets, supporting their

brothers and sisters with all they

could because this generation

started to wake up and realize the

wrong that was being done to

them. They wanted to change the

situation for the better and they

w e r e n o t w i l l i n g t o m a k e

compromises and lose the fight for

the sake of our future and the

As a conclusion, the situation in Iraq

was caused by many reasons but

mostly it was because a lot of

countries had their eye on Iraq,

especially Iran, which had the biggest

role in the deteriorating political

climate in Iraq for the last decade.

The only solution to this problem is

the formation of a government only

loyal to Iraq and the people to build

strong independent policies to

ensure a prosperous future to the

people of the country. There are two

sides for every story, and I am telling

you my side of the story.

students we are citizens of the world

and we need to care not just for one

event at the time but for every single

one of them if possible.

Ten minutes ago (when the article

was written), I turned in my last

assignment, and then I realized:

D1’s over. Ten minutes ago, the

ten months I spent here studying

finished. So now, it’s time for ten

highlights of this totally crazy year

in very not-chronological order:

10. In every group there are

always people that don’t believe

in obvious things. Like the fact

that the raining season got its

name for a reason. That’s

probably why one day we ended

up on a walk to Woodlands

despite very obvious clouds over

our heads. We tried to run, we

tried to hide - for nothing. But

UWCEA students are not that

easy to defeat, so instead of

panicking we woke the inside

dryads inside of us and started

dancing. Right there, on the

flooded, school lawn, and for a

quick moment, the IB demons

disappeared.

9. Screams, cries and people

jumping out of nowhere. Then I

was usually asked to come with a

newspaper and a container to

capture the monster that brought

as the UWCEA hero and the most

agents and amateurs of class

skipping should all learn from him

zawsze pozostanie w sercach

pierwszej generacji jako bohater

UWCEA i najbardziej tajemniczy

człowiek na świecie. Agenci

specjalni i miłośnicy pomijania

lekcji powinni się uczyć od niego i

j e g o p o n a d p r z e c i ę t n e j

umiejętności rozmywania się w

powietrzu. Matt, gdziekolwiek

jesteś, mamy nadzieję, że masz

się dobrze, bo dla nas na zawsze

pozostaniesz legendą.

clearly remember my answer:

międzykulturalnego zrozumienia,

grupa odważnych ochotników

spotkała się w kuchni by podjąć

się w y z w a n i a u g o t o w a n i a

PRAWDZIWEGO WŁOSKIEGO

MAKARONU, rzeczy nieznanej

poza granicami kraju w kształcie

buta. Nie udało się. Nie zmieniło

4. Hair in general is a big topic

while boarding. Especially when a

presence of some small, slightly

annoying friends are discovered.

Yes, I’m talking lice. Disgusting for

you, great integration opportunity

for us. Because what brings

people more together than

constant scratching, soaking

scalps in vinegar and hours of

brushing each others hair?

Nothing.

3. For ages art tried to portray the

most important characters in the

history of humanity. And despite

modern art being said to be

eccentric and simple, UWC

students like to go back to more

znanym tematem gdy mieszka

się na kampusie. Zwłaszcza gdy

odkryje się obecność pewnych

mały c h , l e k k o i r y t u jąc y c h

przyjaciół. Tak mówię o wszach.

Obrzydliwe dla ciebie, świetna

możliwość integracji dla nas.

2. I personally believe that great

a c h i e v e m e n t s n e e d t o b e

properly celebrated. The UWCEA

version of ‘The Wave’ was

definitely such an achievement

and deserved all the singingdancing-running

situation that

happened after most of the

audience left. Craziness could be

spotted in the eyes of all DPs,

MYPs and PYPs present as we

threw frisbees, shouted and

jumped all over the place,

obviously to praise our amazing

actors and actresses. The theatre

survived and that’s what truly

matters.

Adaptacja ‘Trzeciej Fali’ w

wykonaniu uczniów UWCEA

zdecydowanie była jednym z

takich osiągnięć i zasłużyła na

śpiewająco-tańcząco-biegający

chaos jaki nastąpił po tym jak

publiczność opuściła budynek.

Szaleństwo można było dostrzec

w oczach wszystkich obecnych

uczniów DP, MYP i PYP, gdy

krzyczeliśmy, rzucaliśmy frisbee i

skakaliśmy po scenie, ku chwale

wspaniałych aktorów i aktorek.

Budynek teatru przetrwał i to się

liczy.

exceptional maturity visible in

every corner of UWCEA it’s time

to give our poor, hard-working

students a break and talk about

what we do in our more casual

moments, when we’re out of

school, or even out of Moshi. I’m

obviously talking about a

magnificent time some of us

had during the October break in

the Pamoja Maasai school, when

in a breaks between hard work

we gathered together to play

with LEGO and puzzles. Quality

time.

5 LESSONS I LEARNED IN MY

FIRST YEAR AT UWCEA

It’s been about 6 months since I left

Tanzania and a few days that D1

ended. I remember as it were

yesterday, the hot summer day

when I arrived at Kilimanjaro

International Airport along with five

co-years of mine from Indonesia,

Israel, and Palestine. We all met in

Ethiopia as we flew from very

different places around the world

Athens, Jakarta, Tel Aviv. We all had

the same goal, looking forward to be

part of something unknown at the

moment, but also exciting: UWC.

“I remember it as if it

were yesterday…”

We got out of the aircraft and were

immediately consumed by the

afternoon heat. The first thing we

did is to wait in a long endless line

for our visas where we spent so

much time talking about our

τότε που έφυγα από την Τανζανία και

λίγες μέρες τελείωσε το D1. Θυμάμαι

σαν χθες, την καυτή καλοκαιρινή μέρα

όταν έφτασα στο Διεθνές Αεροδρόμιο

του Κιλιμάντζαρο μαζί με πέντε

συμμαθητές μου από την Ινδονησία,

το Ισραήλ και την Παλαιστίνη. Όλοι

συναντηθήκαμε στην Αιθιοπία καθώς

πετάμε από πολύ διαφορετικά μέρη

σε όλο τον κόσμο Αθήνα, Τζακάρτα,

Τελ Αβίβ. Όλοι είχαμε τον ίδιο στόχο,

ανυπομονούσαμε να γίνουμε μέρος σε

κάτι άγνωστο εκείνη τη στιγμή, αλλά

συναρπαστικό που είναι το UWC.

Βγήκαμε από το αεροσκάφος και

αισθανθήκαμε αμέσως την

μεσημεριανή ζέστη . Το πρώτο

πράγμα που κάναμε ήταν να

περιμένουμε σε μια ατέλειωτη γραμμή

για τις βίζες μας, όπου περάσαμε

τόσο πολύ χρόνο μιλώντας για τις

εμπειρίες μας, ταξίδια σε όλο τον

κόσμο και τις προσδοκίες μας για το

πώς θα είναι το UWC.

Βγαίνοντας από το αεροδρόμιο

εντόπισα τον πάγκο του UWC East

Africa. Φιλικοί άνθρωποι ήταν εκεί για

experiences, trips around the world,

and expectations of how UWC is

going to be.

The first thing I encountered was

the UWC East Africa stand. Friendly

people were there to help us after

our long journey. But the journey

had not ended… It had just started.

Every time I go back to Greece

everyone is asking me what do you

miss the most? What did you learn?

Why does Africa get you hooked?

The truth is whenever I get asked

these questions , I have searched

within myself and have tried to

offer the most honest answer

Κάθε φορά που επιστρέφω στην

Ελλάδα όλοι με ρωτούν τι σου λείπει

περισσότερο; Τι έμαθες; Γιατί η

Αφρική σε γοητεύει; Η αλήθεια είναι

όποτε μου κάνουν αυτές οι ερωτήσεις

έψαχνα μέσα μου και έχω προσφέρει

μια αλήθεια, το βαθύτερο που

μπορούσα να βρω εκείνη τη στιγμή.

Όμως, παρόλα αυτά, έχω πάντα την

αίσθηση ότι δεν ήταν η σωστή

απάντηση, ότι δεν έχω εκφράσει

πραγματικά τον λόγο για τον οποίο

τα συναισθήματά μου δεν

αντικατοπτρίζονται σε αυτές τις

λέξεις. Έχω μάθει πολλά πράγματα

στο UWC και γενικά μένοντας στην

Αφρική. Πράγματα που με άλλαξαν,

possible; in spite of this, I am always

left with the feeling that it wasn't

the correct answer, but I don't

understand why my feelings are not

reflected in those words. I have

learned many things in UWC and

by living in Africa. Things that

c h a n g e d m e , s h a p e d m y

personality, and made me who I am

now.

1 - To appreciate

Moving to Tanzania made me see

situations that I was not familiar

with and that I had been ignoring or

considering as non-existent just

because they did not exist in my

country. Getting out of my comfort

zone made me appreciate what I

have instead of constantly ask for

more and useless things. I also

learned to appreciate bigger things

such as the sense of community

and UWC in general rather than

material things.

2 - Sense of community

UWC East Africa really grew the

sense of community inside me. I

didn’t just create friendships, I

created a family and I know that no

matter the distance, these people

are always going to be there for me.

Το να εκτιμώ. Μετακομίζοντας στην

Τανζανία ήρθα σε επαφή με

καταστάσεις με τις οποίες δεν ήμουν

εξοικειωμένος , που αγνοούσα ή

θεωρούσα ανύπαρκτες μόνο και μόνο

επειδή δεν υπάρχουν στη χώρα μου. Η

έξοδος από τη ζώνη άνεσής μου με

έκανε να εκτιμώ πάντα αυτό που έχω

και να μην ζητώ συνεχώς για

περισσότερα και άχρηστα πράγματα.

Έμαθα επίσης να εκτιμώ μεγαλύτερα

πράγματα, όπως η αίσθηση της

κοινότητας και γενικότερα του UWC

παρά των υλικών.

Αίσθηση κοινότητας. Το UWC East

Africa δημιούργησε πραγματικά την

αίσθηση της κοινότητας μέσα μου.

Δεν δημιούργησα μόνο φιλίες ,

3 - Things aren’t always as they

seem or as we learned about them

Staying and cohabitating with

people from different countries

changed everything I used to

believe that I knew about their

countries and cultures through

media. Our daily conversations

m a d e m e r e a l i z e t h a t t h e

information that the media shows

us is usually fake or misrepresented,

d eveloping s tere otypes a n d

perceptions that are not in any case

true. I learned that you have to

search for the truth and to find it

through real experiences of people,

πολιτισμούς τους μέσω των μέσων

ενημέρωσης. Οι καθημερινές μας

συζητήσεις με έκαναν να

συνειδητοποιήσω ότι η εικόνα και οι

πληροφορίες που μας δείχνουν τα

μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης είναι

συνήθως ψεύτικες ή

παραπλανητικές , αναπτύσσοντας

στερεότυπα και αντιλήψεις που σε

καμία περίπτωση δεν είναι αληθινά.

Έμαθα ότι πρέπει να αναζητήσεις

την αλήθεια και να την βρεις μέσα

από πραγματικές εμπειρίες

ανθρώπων, αλλά το πιο σημαντικό

είναι να είσαι πάντα έτοιμος να

αλλάξεις τη γνώμη σας για κάτι.

but most importantly to always be

ready to change your opinion,

staying open-minded.

4 - Better emotion management

The change of environment at the

age of 16 is something fascinating,

and the expectation that every

single day will be a day with new

experiences and discoveries made

me think that there is nothing that

can affect me and make me feel

negative emotions. Quickly though,

I realized that no matter how

beautiful the experience is and how

days are activity-filled, there are

times when you face nostalgia for

everything you left behind.

Remembering moments with my

family and friends such as dinners,

walks, and trips made me feel lowspirited.

This was something new to

me and I had to figure out the way

to manage my emotions in order to

not feel sad and overcome every

negative feeling so that I stay

focused on my goals.

περιβάλλοντος στην ηλικία των 16

είναι κάτι συναρπαστικό και η

προσδοκία ότι κάθε μέρα θα είναι μια

μέρα με νέες εμπειρίες και

ανακαλύψεις με έκανε να σκεφτώ ότι

δεν υπάρχει τίποτα που να μπορεί να

με επηρεάσει και να με κάνει να

αισθανθώ αρνητικά συναισθήματα.

Γρήγορα όμως, συνειδητοποίησα ότι

ανεξάρτητα από το πόσο όμορφη

είναι η εμπειρία και το πώς οι μέρες

γεμίζουν με δραστηριότητες ,

υπάρχουν στιγμές που

αντιμετωπίζεις νοσταλγία για ό,τι

αφήσες πίσω . Στιγμές με την

οικογένειά μου και τους φίλους μου,

όπως δείπνα, περίπατοι και ταξίδια

με έκαναν να αισθανθώ

συναισθηματικά πεσμένος . Αυτό

ήταν κάτι νέο για μένα και έπρεπε να

βρω τον τρόπο να διαχειριστώ τα

συναισθήματά μου για να μην

αισθάνομαι λυπημένος και να

ξεπεράσω κάθε αρνητικό

συναίσθημα, ώστε να παραμείνω

επικεντρωμένος στους στόχους μου.

Pole-Pole. Pole-pole σημαίνει αργά,

αργά και είναι μια φράση που

άκουσα πολύ στην Τανζανία .

Χρειάστηκε πολύς χρόνος για να την

συνηθίσω λόγω των γρήγορων

ρυθμών της ζωής που είχα συνηθίσει

προηγουμένως. Έμαθα να παίρνω το

χρόνο μου και να μην βιάζομαι για

τίποτα. Για να απολαύσω κάθε

στιγμή και εμπειρία.

5 - Pole-pole

Pole-pole means slowly, slowly and

it is a phrase that I listened to a lot

in Tanzania by local people. It took

much time to get used to it due to

the fast paces of life that I was

previously used to. I learned to take

my time and not to rush about

anything. To enjoy every single

moment and experience.

A f t e r s o m a n y a d v e n t u r e s ,

experiences, and self-exploration,

when you return to your country

after long flights, you start feeling

the nostalgia of your new home.

You feel that you have to share all

Μετά από τόσες πολλές περιπέτειες,

εμπειρίες και αυτο-εξερεύνηση, όταν

επιστρέφεις στη χώρα σου μετά από

μεγάλες πτήσεις , αρχίζεις να

αισθάνεσαι τη νοσταλγία του νέου

σου σπιτιού. Πιστεύεις ότι πρέπει να

μοιραστείς όλες αυτές τις εμπειρίες

και στιγμές με τους πλησιέστερους

ανθρώπους σου , αλλά το πιο

σημαντικό είναι ότι δεν μπορείς να

περιμένεις να μπεις σε ένα

αεροπλάνο για να δείτε τη νέα σου

οικογένεια. Το UWC East Africa με έχει

σίγουρα διδάξει πολλά μαθήματα

που έχουν βαθιά ριζώσει μέσα μου

και θα συνεχίσει να με διδάσκει

ακόμη περισσότερα με το πέρασμα

του χρόνου.

THE STRENGTH OF UWCEA

One thing I learnt during this quarantine is we have each other no matter what. I have

made extraordinarily strong relationships with people I met at the beginning of this

school year. I have learnt valuable lessons in life, I have found friends to confide in,

people to share good news and sorrow, and most importantly I have found family.

My initial speculation of this quarantine was that the distance was going to break

whatever bond we had, but I was proven wrong. We are closer than ever. There are lots

of calls and video chats involved, we check up on each other and mostly just to have a

conversation that could have been had on the common space or on the swings on

Campus. Looking at it closely I realized that the distance did not change anything, and

as this school year ends, I want to tell you all that I love you so much. Be it staff or

student, you made the UWC experience worthwhile.

Now, I am simply waiting for the next zoom birthday we are going to celebrate!

Jambo moja nililojifunza wakati huu karantini ni kwamba kila mmoja wetu bila kujali

matatizo yanayokumba jamii yetu, tuko pamoja. Nimejenga uhusiano mkubwa na watu

ambao nilikutana nao mwanzoni mwa mwaka huu wa shule. Nimejifunza maadili ya

thamani katika maisha, nimepata marafiki wa kuuri, watu kushiriki habari njema na

huzuni na muhimu zaidi nimepata familia.

Uvumi wangu wa awali wa karantini hii ulikuwa umbali ulikuwa kati yetu ungevunja

dhamana yoyote ambayo tulikuwa nayo lakini ilikuwa ni si ya kweli. Tumekuwa karibu

kuliko hapo awali. Ingawa kuna simu nyingi na mazungumzo ya video zilizofanyika,

tujuliana hali na kuwa na mazungumzo ambayo yangeweza kufanyika kwenye nafasi

ya kawaida tukiwa shuleni. Kuangalia kwa karibu niligundua kwamba umbali

haujabadilisha chochote. Na tunavyohitimisha mwaka huu wa masomo, nataka

“The Tomato”

A story by Luanga Kasanga

Pierre drummed his thick

fingers impatiently, as he

waited for his weekly report

to upload.

“Four hundred thousand

francs a month for ‘special’

corporate speeds and we get

service like this!” he

grumbled to himself. He

turned his attention away

from his desktop and cast his

gaze through the tall, clean

window and let it rest there

for a while.

It was a drab day, and a grey

blanket lay over the modern

Kinshasa skyline, casting a

moody shadow of colours

across the city. Far down

below the office building of

KinKonnect, the roads were

filled with commuters and

cars, hustling their way past

each other for their lunch

hour. They moved with an

automatic and frantic energy

that contrasted with the

slow, unbothered

atmosphere. Opposite

Pierre’s window, a set of

skyscrapers dominated the

north view of the city, their

lifeless windows blurring the

activity inside.

Turning his attention back

down to the streets below, he

observed mundanely as

coat-wearing office workers

held coffee cups and jostled

their way about the crowded

pavement, some with a

phone in the other hand.

Their lives seemed so far

away from his 25th floor

office, so irrelevant. Pierre

was glad that he never had

to set a foot out of the

comfort of his warm, snug

office just to grab his lunch.

Instead, lunch came to him.

Ah, satisfying. He turned his

head back to take a

momentary look at his office.

The gorgeous benefits of his

position as Deputy Head of

Marketing for KinKonnect

were endless. The five digit

monthly pay was one thing,

the perks were another. He

was responsible to Felicia

Katumbi, his superior, but 57

people in this office were

responsible to him. And

amongst them were his

personal assistant, Lumu.

Young, naïve and yearning to

impress, the Bukavu-born

bachelor attended to Pierre’s

every need. Lumu knew what

he liked, what he disliked,

and especially what he

disliked. Pierre never failed to

express his displeasure if one

task was done wrong. Even if

it was in front of the rest of

the workplace. It gave him

power, it gave him pleasure

and it made him feel

untouchable. Most

importantly, it made him

strong.

Because Pierre was paranoid

of this fact that he wasn’t.

A knock at the door nearly

startled Pierre. He sat up,

arranged the collar of his

black shirt and called out

gruffly.

“Come in!”

A feeble Lumu awkwardly

shuffled in sideways,

carrying a white ceramic

tray covered with a black

tablecloth. Yet another

benefit of an obedient

personal assistant: room

service.

“Here’s your lunch sir,” Lumu

announced. Pierre pushed

his monitor backwards,

removed his black pen from

the desk and inserted it into

a blue cup holder, a silent

invitation for his personal

assistant to place his meal

down on the sleek, black

table top.

As Lumu shuffled closer to

the desk and bent to place

the tray down, arching his

long spindly arms over the

monitor, he spoke.

“Today I thought I would

pick something special for

ya, Mr Kyaviro,” Pierre raised

his bushy black eyebrows.

“What is it? It better not

have any of those damn

green vegetables, Lumu.

How many times do I have

to tell you this!” he asserted,

raising his voice.

Among the many rules and

regulations that Pierre

imposed on Lumu, the

oddest was his ‘no

vegetables in my food” rule

that he drilled into him from

the very first day. An

explanation was never

offered, but one of many

emotional rants from Pierre

might’ve offered an insight

into why.

“Vegans are sores on our

society! I can’t believe

someone would willingly

choose to have…Vegetables

in their food. Disgusting,

that. Have you ever tasted

vegetables, Lumu? Mushy,

wet and horrible. They don’t

have taste. When I eat, I

want to taste. I can’t do that

with v-vegetables, Lumu.

Never. They’re evil. That’s

why I can never understand

how someone can willingly

insert that into their food.

Can you imagine, Lumu,

doing that? Can you?

Nonsense. ”

The manner in which Pierre

said “vegetables” was like a

snake spitting venom.

Nevertheless, Lumu followed

this rule obediently, like all

the others. Even the ‘no ties

in my office rule’.

“Ties choke me up, Lumu.

Ties are uncomfortable. I

never want to see it on

anyone while they’re in my

office, including you, Lumu!”

Leaning back straight after

gently setting down the

train, Lumu answered.

“Take a look, sir. I promise it

doesn’t have any vegetables

in it, sir. I just thought I

would give you something

special today, sir. You’re a

great boss.” Pierre

momentarily stared his

assistant straight in his dark

brown eyes, and then

stretched out his right arm

to lift the black cloth to

reveal the fare that laid

awaiting in the tray.

In the left partition was the

usual ham and cheese

sandwich, with extra ham.

Good.

In the middle partition,

chocolate yoghurt gleamed

back at him.

Good. Where’s the surprise?

In the right partition, a

small, circular mini pizza

was squeezed in. And in the

corner was…

No.

No. Pierre froze.

“Do you like it, sir?” said

Lumu, apprehensively.

Pierre’s mouth popped half

open, muttering an

inaudible word over and

over.

No. With a sudden start, he

pushed his chair back from

the desk with a single,

violent movement, his

mouth muttering over and

over. The colour on his face

was starting to drain. Whiter

and whiter. Lumu panicked,

as he also froze, bracing

himself for another berating

session. He bowed his head,

waiting for the powerful

voice to break out. Waiting.

Waiting.

But the only sound that

came was of his muttering

boss.

No.

No. Pierre was still staring

directly at the tray. His eyes

were wide open, gripped

with horror. His face was

now snow-white. His fists

were clenched, his arms

tight. His torso seemed to

tense away from the tray, in

disgust…Or in fear?

Hearing no response, Lumu

hurriedly tried to excuse

himself.

“I-I’m sorry sir. Really sorry. I

just thought you would want

to try out the tomato slices. I

usually put it on m-my

pizzas. It’s b-better with

than without, sir, I thought.

After all, it’s a fruit, not a v-

ve-vegetable. I’m sorry sir. I’ll

take it back and get you a

new tray of lunch, sir. Sir?

Sir?”

Pierre began to visibly

shake. His mouth was

opening and shutting

rapidly, now.

“Please…T-t…Take…It…Aaway…”

he muttered, still

frozen in the same stance.

“I’ll get right on it, sir” Lumu

said, quickly reaching out

over to pick up the tray. As

he was lifting it up, Pierre

recoiled further in his chair,

shutting his eyes and looking

away from it.

“Please…Get it away…I’ll do

anything…Lumu…Take it

away…Please,” whispered

Pierre, now. His voice

seemed to be getting

weaker. He now raised his

arms, defensively, like an

infant shielding itself against

a sinister being.

“It’s just a tomato, sir…”

Lumu smiled, carrying the

tray at his chest. Oddly, he

was starting to enjoy this.

Seeing his boss, so weak…

He snapped out of his

thoughts, however, and

turned to begin walking out

of the office. Pierre

continued to mutter, his face

white and vacant of colour,

body trembling pathetically.

Lumu calmly walked out of

blind accusations page after page,

made from stereotypical beliefs that

are used to profile criminals so we

can view them from a harsh

perspective. Martina Cole places her

readers in the mind-set of ordinary

individuals turned criminals through

standoff circumstances procreated

by extreme poverty that makes

people scramble to put food on the

table.

not exactly inspirational but her

c h a r a c t e r a n d p e r s o n a l i t y

nonetheless were what I found

young women alike. She is a wellcrafted

character that poses

admirable traits that show how

young women are not a force to be

reckoned with.

In this book I learned that, there is

no adversity large enough to quash

the scarlet flame that is within us to

succeed. Life shall be filled with

heartaches and setbacks, but it is

our perseverance through such

difficult roots that makes the fruit

more candid.

On June 21st I should have

travelled back to Chile after

several months without seeing my

family. However, a few weeks ago

I received an email saying that my

flights had been canceled. In Chile,

t h e n u m b e r o f c a s e s h a s

continued to grow exponentially,

also, in the last month, our health

minister resigned, and Chile is

currently among the ten countries

with the highest number of cases.

That is why due to these times of

doubt and uncertainty that we are

all facing, I’m going to stay in

Tanzania probably until December

or until next year.

It has been a difficult year for most

of us, a year of many decisions and

plans put on hold. Little by little, we

have found a way to get ahead and

see the light within this long period

of recess. Also, we have been able

to create even stronger bonds with

those around us despite the

distance. Now we know that

support and understanding are key,

today more than ever.

We’ve also had to adapt to an

online educational system, the only

option we had left. Although

studying online is not the same as

listening directly to our teachers

and the diverse opinions of our

classmates, it has been an essential

learning tool in the last months. I

have thought a lot about this topic

in the last few weeks, education. It

respecto a este tema en las últimas

semanas, la educación. Me hace

p e n s a r e n m i f a m i l i a , y

especialmente en mi papá, ya que

no lo podré ver por un largo tiempo.

Mi papá es una de las personas que

más me ha apoyado e inspirado a lo

largo de mi vida. Nació en Chillán,

Chile junto a una familia de otros

dos hermanos, por ahí por los años

70. Con una infancia muy distinta a

la mía, lamentablemente no tuvo

makes me think of my family, and

especially my dad since I won't be

able to see him for a long time.

My dad is one of the people who

has supported and inspired me the

most throughout my life. He was

born in Chillan, Chile with a family

of two other siblings around the

70s. With a very different childhood

from mine, unfortunately, he did

not have the best educational

opportunities due to the context

and the economic situation of the

family. However, he got ahead due

t o h i s e f f o r t a n d a m a z i n g

perseverance.

I always remember his words of

encouragement very fondly,

especially at this time. Within these

circumstances, I feel that in some

way we’ve had to redefine our

concept of education. A sort of

education that goes beyond

traditional learning in classrooms.

During these months, we’ve also

learned to get to know ourselves

and those around us better. We

have developed tools that will

después en nuestras vidas, y creo

que este periodo de receso es el

mejor momento para detenerse a

reflexionar sobre esto. En mi caso,

mi papá es una de esas personas

que más me ha inspirado y me ha

dado las fuerzas para seguir

adelante.

Many times, certain moments or

certain people mark a before and

after in our lives, and I think that this

period of lockdown is the best time

to stop and reflect on this. In my

case, my dad is one of those people

who has inspired me the most and

has given me the strength to keep

going.

I never thought this is how we

would end our first year studying in

Tanzania. These will definitely be

months that we will always

remember. I think of all my

classmates who are also on the

Moshi campus since they will not be

able to return to their home

countries. These wonderful people

have become a second family to

me, and I feel that the campus has

become my second home as well.

A few days ago, we realized that

two months had already passed

since we arrived on campus after

the school closed, so fast that we

didn’t even notice. That’s why I think

of my family from a distance, my

roots. I think of the big hug that we

will give each other when we see

I MISS THE OCEAN…

I had the chance to grow up in the

“paradise island” of Mauritius,

which is located on the east coast

of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.

To give you an idea, Mauritius is

about the size of Tarangire National

Park here in Tanzania, which means

that you can see the turquoise

water at the horizon from almost

everywhere! I never realized, until I

moved in Tanzania with my

parents 10 months ago, how much

I love the ocean, and I’malways

time hoping to see it at the

boundary of any landscape. It’s

actually been six months since I’ve

been to the beach (December

holidays) and it’s the longest time

I’ve ever spent without it! For a girl

who used to spend every single

week-end at the beach with my

family and friends as I lived 10

minutes away from it, 6 months is

a very long time! And as I’m stuck

here in Tanzania because of the

current Corona situation, I don’t

know when will be the next time I’ll

super long! Et comme je suis coincé

ici en Tanzanie à cause de la situation

Feeling and smelling the salty air,

sunset with the sun disappearing

behind the reef, scuba diving and

admiring the small fishes living their

peaceful lives, swimming, kite surfing,

wakeboarding, fishing… I seriously

could go on with that list of things I

“A better dream than happiness doesn’t exist”

Hello Emma, tell me about you. Where are

you from? What are your hobbies? What’s

something interesting about you?

My name is Emma van Engelen, I am 17

years old and live with my parents and

sister Sarah in Apeldoorn, a provincial

town in the centre of The Netherlands. I

am extremely excited to go to UWCEA.

What are your hobbies?

Cycling (racing or mountain biking) is

one of my biggest hobbies. In the

corona-time I went on various cycling

trips with my friends, it is really lovely.

In the Netherlands, we are allowed to

go out of our houses to do sports, but

we must stay 1,5 meters apart.

Furthermore, I enjoy debating (MUN

and MEP), hanging out with my friends

and spending time with my family.

What is your biggest dream?

I personally love giving presentations,

teaching and helping people. This is

why one of my biggest dreams is to

become a professor at a University (in

History). However, I am not completely

sure were life will take me. I’m actually

quite satisfied with the idea that

everything is very unpredictable, but

teaching is definitely something that I

would like to be doing when I’m older.

Whether that’s on a school, in a

museum, in organisations, I will see.

One other big dream is to eventually be

working for the UN. But in the end, I just

hope to become happy. A better dream

than happiness does not exist.

How did you discover UWC, and why did

you apply?

About two years ago, a UWC alumni

from Atlantic College in Wales came to

give a presentation at my present

school in the Netherlands. Before that, I

had never heard about UWC. After the

presentation, I immediately got

extremely excited and decided to do

more research about UWC and its

values. After the doing the research, I

knew that I wanted to apply. Now,

almost two years later, I got into

UWCEA, which is just amazing.

Which was your dream UWC school?

UWC Atlantic, because that’s the first

college I got really excited about, after

hearing the presentation from the UWC

alumni of Atlantic College. But now that

I’m selected to go to UWCEA, I’m

probably even more excited about going

to Tanzania.

I think that going to live in a country with

a totally different culture compared to

the one I’m used to, is just going to be a

big adventure.

Could you briefly describe the selection

process you went through?

Our selection process consisted of two

rounds. The first one was a digital

application, where I needed to answer

loads of questions and fill in some

general documents (passport, grades,

recommendations, etc.). In the second

round we needed to do assignments in

groups, a bit of acting and at the end we

had two interviews.

Do you have a role model?

I don’t really have a role model. Of

course, there are people whom I admire

for what they have achieved. But in the

end, I just want to stay close to who I am.

Will this be your first time in a boarding

school?

Yes, this will be my first time at a

boarding school. At the moment I’m

studying at my local grammar school.

What excites you the most about coming

to UWC East Africa?

Making friends with people from all over

the world. Studying alongside people

with different nationalities and views

seems like a very valuable experience,

from which I hope to learn a lot. On top of

that, I would love to get to know more

about the African culture(s), since I have

never been to any country in Africa

before, so I honestly do not know what to

expect.

What scares you the most about UWC

East Africa?

Spiders and scorpions ;)

What will you miss the most when you

are away from home?

My Dutch friends, my parents, my little

sister and of course Hagelslag and

Stroopwafels (Dutch snacks).

What do you expect from the D2s?

I hope they can help me to find my way

around things at UWCEA in the first

months. But in the end, I just hope we all

get along well.

What will be your biggest contribution to

the UWCEA community?

Helping people, whether by tutoring or

doing charity work.

After UWC, I would like to continue

helping people, preferably on a much

bigger scale. I would like to help UWC

bring their ideas into practice by teaching

people about the UWC values; peace and

sustainability. I believe that together with

UWC I can make a positive impact on the

world, because changing the world is not

something you do on your own, but

throughout good cooperation and unity.

Do you have any projects you’d like to

carry out during your years at UWCEA?

At the moment I am not sure what kind

of CAS projects I’d like to pursue. They all

seem very nice though. One thing I would

rather like to take part in is a MUN

conference with the UWC people. (As

long as COVID-19 doesn’t prevent it)

How is the current COVID-19 situation

going to affect your UWC experience?

One of my biggest concerns at this

moment is actually being able to get to

Tanzania. Due to flight restrictions,

there are still no airplanes flying to

Tanzania from the Netherlands. I just

hope all people will eventually be able

to reach the college, so that we can

have an amazing UWC experience

together.

Do you have any comment on the BLM

movement?

At this moment, history is being written

all around the world. I think it is really

inspiring to see so many people coming

together on the streets to protest

against racism. Racism and

discrimination are not only an issue in

the USA, but also in many other

countries in the world, including the

Netherlands. But in the end protesting

against racism will not solve the

problem. I think education is the tool

that should be used to make an actual

change.
