LILA*
LIVERPOOL
Bespoke Alternative
Provision with an EAL
Specialism
THE BACKGROUND
The Directors, Leanne Linacre and
Victoria Bligh, established LILA* in
2004 as an independent English
language school welcoming over
2000 international students each
year to study English.
LILA* was very
accommodating
to my 16
year old. The
course really
helped both his
English and his
confidence and
he very much
enjoyed his time
there.
- Linda
THE PURPOSE
LILA* provides bespoke alternative
provision from its inspiring school
in Liverpool city centre, meeting
a growing need for high quality
alternative provision with an
English as an Additional Language
(EAL) specialism in the Liverpool
city region.
We work with an experienced
practitioner to instill a restorative
practice philosophy throughout
the school where our primary
motivators are those of
cooperation, collaboration,
taking responsibility and being
accountable. We
believe that a school
environment built on
a restorative practice
ethos allows pupils
and staff alike to feel
valued, listened to and
engaged.
It is our vision that
all of our pupils ‘love
to learn’ regardless
of background or
previous experiences in
education settings.
LILA* is accredited by the British
Council, AQA and Cambridge
English Assessment to deliver
a wide range of courses. LILA*
has won several awards for
quality and customer service
and the Directors were awarded
Merseyside Women of the Year
2013 in the education category for
their contribution to education in
the city.
The team at LILA* has been
delivering support for pupils with
English as an Additional Language
and training for teachers and TAs
in schools across Sefton for 15
years. Originally contracted by
Sefton Complimentary Education
the provision has since evolved
and support and training is
funded directly by schools.

THE LEADERSHIP TEAM
The LILA* team works hard to keep students motivated
and ensure they have the best possible experience while
studying with us.
THE PROVISION
We put the individual needs
of the children and young
people accessing our provision
at the heart of everything
we do by providing flexible
timetables and social learning
opportunities outside of
the traditional classroom
environment. Support classes
during school holidays are
also available for students
requiring additional or ‘catchup’
support.
We also support our pupils’
self-development through
yoga classes and guided
meditation sessions and by
providing positive social
experiences through our
regular activity and excursion
programme.

Pupils are referred by commissioners: schools
or local authorities. We accept referrals from
the whole of Merseyside.
When they join us, each student receives a
personalised induction to enable them to
follow a tailored learning programme that is
right for them.
We consult closely with students, their
commissioning school and their family or
carers to draw up Personal Learning Plan.
When students are ready to leave us they
might be returning to a mainstream school
or academy, moving to college or university
or entering the world of work.
They will have gained formal qualifications
and a strong understanding of themselves.
Each student takes away a full record of
their achievements gained at LILA*
PROGRESSION OPTION
We’re excited to provide a range
of courses to develop students
academic, professional and
personal development.
For example, our Cooking
Course including a Food Hygiene
Certificate gives students
essential skills and qualifications
to take their first steps towards
a career or higher education in
catering and hospitality.
China: Dim Sum
3 This week we will visit China and make
our own dim sum and dips to take away.
4
England: Apple Pie
This week will stay close to home
and make our own pastry and build a
lattice top apple pie to take home.
Travelling the world with food: 6 week course
1
Introduction to cooking and food hygiene
In the introduction week students are given a
clear outline of what to expect, the layout, equipment
and kitchen rules and safety. We will work together on
a poster with the health and safety rules ready to put
up in the space. We will talk about how we will set up
and clean down as a team. At the end of the session
the group should feel like a team ready for cooking up
a storm in the weeks upcoming.
5
India: Curry and Flatbread
This week we will work in groups
to make a paste to be created into their
own curry (using veg/meat or both) and
flatbreads to take away with them.
2
Italy: Lasagne
This week we will visit Italy and
make our own lasagne sheets and build
individual lasagnes to take away with them.
6
Graduation Buffet
This week the students will put
their new skills to test and work as
a team to create their own buffet
for them to share with their tutors,
parents/carers and themselves.
