Reaching Out, Touching Lives
“Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life,
and not something you do in your spare time.”
I’m a fourth-year Ph.D. student studying
international reproductive health, and I would not be where
I am this very minute were it not for the Diamond Jubilee
Scholarship and the freedom that it has afforded me. I needed
to collect my dissertation data abroad, and I was always
uncertain of how I would make that happen financially.
With the help of Alpha Omicron
Pi and others, I am now working
in West Africa to gain a better
understanding of how Ghanaian
women use family planning to
determine the size of their families.
Not only was this experience
necessary to help fulfill my degree
requirements, but it has also
—Marian Wright Edelman
In early May our house was completely destroyed
by flooding in Nashville, TN. I turned to the Ruby Fund after
numerous AOII sisters reminded me about the fund. The Ruby
Fund covered our mortgage payments while we got everything
else in order. We were in way over our heads with trying to
figure out how to get our home rebuilt and also continuing to pay
all the bills that we were previously obligated to. The Ruby Fund
was truly a lifesaver.
continued to open my eyes to the plight of women worldwide.
I think there’s something very powerful about the fact that
my affiliation with one women’s organization that I hold very
dear to my heart—Alpha Omicron Pi—is allowing me to
do research that will one day help other women to achieve
their goals. The desire to have healthy, well-spaced, and welleducated
families is a desire shared by women
across the globe. In addition to making me a
better woman, I also see this Diamond Jubilee
Scholarship as one small step in making that
desire a reality for others. For all of this, I’m very
grateful.
