G LOBAL N EWSOver 3.5 billion masks,tons of pharmaprocessed via FrankfurtAirportAbout 50 airlines converted passenger planesto all-cargo flights as demand peaks butofficials say much needs to be done to makethe industry strongerFRANKFURT: Lufthansa Cargo and other airlines have so fartransported via Frankfurt Airport more than 3.5 billion masks,other protective and medical equipment as well as tons ofpharmaceuticals for Germany and the entire European marketsince the Coronavirus pandemic induced lockdowns cameabout in mid-March.Harald Gloy, the Chairman of the Board of the Air CargoCommunity Frankfurt e.V. and Board Member of LufthansaCargo AG, said the need for vital medical supplies andequipment kept the air cargo industry busy, especially thoseoperating at Frankfurt Airport, Europe's leading air cargo hub.“3.5 billion respiratory protection masks andother protective equipment in 22,000 shipmentsplus medical equipment and pharmaceuticalsas well as urgently required industrial goods,post, packages and food for the German andEuropean markets. That sums up air cargo inFrankfurt since the worldwide lockdown due tothe SARS-CoV19-pandemic in mid-March,” saidGloy whose group represents over 50 airlines,forwarding agents, ground handlingcompanies, airport operators and serviceproviders.Gloy said Frankfurt's central position, its good motorway links, inaddition to having Europe's largest handling capacity forperishables and chilled goods, a cutting-edge animal station, awide variety of forwarding agents and authorities on site as wellas industry and trade customers in the surrounding area, made itan ideal center to transport vital supplies during the pandemic.“When supply chains break down in times of crisis, only air cargohas the ability to link industry and trade on intercontinentalmarkets within hours. Air cargo is therefore of systemicrelevance to Germany as an exporting country, but also forEurope as a whole,” said Gloy.Michael Müller, Board member of the Air Cargo Community andExecutive Director Labor Relations and member of the ExecutiveBoard of Fraport AG, said the demand for air cargo remains highthat it prompted about 50 airlines operating at Frankfurt Airportto convert passenger aircraft to so-called “Preighter” planesthough they are more difficult to load and unload due to itslimited space and narrow doors.“Demand for cargo capacities remains high. With the slump inpassenger traffic, the option for loading additional cargo onthese aircraft has disappeared. That's why around 50 airlines inFrankfurt are now using passenger aircraft just for cargotransport,” he said.Challenges still aboundThough the air cargo industry is experiencing new highs amidthe world's ongoing fight against the pandemic, officials believemuch needs to be done to make it stronger and more efficient.This include intensifying on a wider scale digitalization and theuse of other technologies to speed-up the process.Patrik Tschirch, Managing Director of the cargo handlingcompany LUG and also a Board member of the Community, saidas a result of the shift towards an enormous import volume andthe almost complete elimination of transfer cargo, flexiblecooperation between the partners involved is essential."Another challenge is the 30 percent increase in the number ofpackages – on peak days five-fold – and the number ofrecipients in relation to tonnage (by weight),” said Tschirch.“Within the Community, we have spent years working ondigitized and automated processes – also in collaboration withthe authorities and forwarding agents. But right now, it isbecoming evident how indispensable digitization is.”“Customs officials will be aware of this if they know in advancewhich consignment is critical, as will HGV drivers, who will begiven a pick-up time and will not have to wait for hours at theairport or rest area. As a Community, we will work even harder topush this forward together with the authorities to makeFrankfurt even more competitive as a location,” he added.Air cargo still a tough businessEven if air cargo is currently the turbo powering the airlinebusiness, only half of normal transport capacity is available,explains Gloy, with the belly of passenger planes, still grounded.With high demand for air cargo services just in the interim, theindustry is still a long way from experiencing its hay days, headded, noting that it has been suffering from a sharp drop inglobal production and in demand for machine and vehicle partsand pharmaceutical products and is constantly adopting tochanging restrictions and regulations on a global basis.“We are, therefore, a long way from normal flight operations,”said Gloy.
