A FORCE
OF GOOD
DESIGN
Scottish Design Awards 2009
It could be argued that now, more than ever
before, design is important. Good design
gives those that commission it a competitive
advantage.
However, it is also times like these that
show the importance of good practice and high
standards.
The Scottish design industry has always
fought hard to champion its high standards, and
these awards are in place to offer a platform to
the talent and dedication shown by those that
are responsible for setting the bar high in both
graphic design and architecture.
You will see from the diverse spread of work
over the following 52 pages that the quality
underpinned by the work of Scotland’s leading
designers remains, despite the challenging
conditions.
In fact, some of the outstanding work on show
may well be because of the current climate as
design fi rms look to raise the bar higher still.
What’s more, the work touches every
area of life, from charities to multi-national
corporations and from corporate identity right
through to the design of the group headquarters
themselves.
Design gets under the nails of business. It
dissects the subject and fi nds out what makes it
tick before creating a solution – be it an identity,
an annual report or even a building – that best
communicates its values to a defi ned target.
But not only does good design help create and
protect businesses across the country, it also
creates a better environment in which we can
grow and prosper.
For that we should all be thankful.
The Scottish Design Awards supplement
showcases the work that has been nominated,
commended and awarded by the assembled
panel of judges.
Of course, not everyone will agree on the fi nal
results. But what we can all agree on is that
Scotland’s designers continue to produce work
that allows clients to punch above their weight.
And the work on display here can only help to
reinforce Scotland as a true force in design.
Welcome to the 2009 Scottish Design
Awards nominations exhibition. This
annual gathering offers you the opportunity
to get together, celebrate and enjoy the best
graphic design and architecture work to
come out of Scotland this year.
DOMENIC LIPPA, PENTAGRAM
CHAIRMAN OF THE JUDGES
“Even though I have been
judging awards for around
20 years now, I never quite
know how I’m going to feel
after the process. Normally,
I must admit to being hugely
disappointed. However,
on this occasion it was
incredibly enjoyable. The mixture of judges was
good and there was hardly any disagreement
between us. In fact it was almost too easy to
agree with everyone!
The work was interesting and generally
with the usual mixture of quality and rubbish.
But on the whole we all felt that the standard
was high. Sometimes regional competitions
can feel second class next to some of the big
global awards schemes. However, the work
was really really good. So congratulations
to Scotland, all the companies with work
chosen and also the Scottish Design Awards
themselves for helping to set the standard
for future years.”
The Scottish Design Awards offers a forum
for debate on the challenges and issues facing
the industry as well as an opportunity to
promote Scotland as a key player in producing
excellence in design.
Gareth Hoskins Architects
Gareth Hoskins Architects have enjoyed a rollercoaster year at
the forefront of a new breed of young and dynamic practices
that are pushing local design talent into the international arena.
A mere decades work has seen the practice scale enviable
heights of success from their lofty eyrie above Queen Street,
proving their versatility with commissions in a diverse range of
work in the public and private sectors.
Hot on the heels of “A Gathering Space” which drew
international acclaim at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the
practice has followed through with a string of eye catching
commissions from Scotland and beyond. Hoskins himself has
been at the forefront of this, nabbing the top slot in Prospect’s
Power 100 and becoming the first architect to win a
Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award.
This raised profile has lent the practice truly global ambition
and created a genuine Scottish export with work proceeding
on a competition proposal for a visitor centre at Fort York,
Toronto, cultural centres being something of a practice
speciality following acclaim for the Culloden Battlefield Visitor
Centre. It is at home though that the practice enjoys greatest
success, from a music and cinema venue in Lerwick, to a villa
in Pollokshields, and an eyebrow raising collaboration with
“The Donald” in Menie, the practice continues its stratospheric
ascent of the architectural firmament.
Robert R Steedman,
Morris and Steedman
Robert Steedman formed renowned architectural practice
Morris and Steedman in 1958, following a creative
partnership with lifelong friend and colleague James
Morris.
A half century in the trade across the full gamut of
architectural commissions has left a lasting legacy upon
Scotland’s built environment and landscapes. It is their
litany of bespoke modern houses though that now fuels
increasing appreciation of the practice as pioneers in the
post war architectural scene.
Notable among these works is Steedman’s own
countryside retreat, winner of a RIBA award in 1989 and
an unusual home in East Kilbride, which features five
sided wedge shaped rooms.
Their work is cited as a major source of inspiration for
today’s architects amongst them Alan Dunlop of gm+ad
who said: “The achievement of the practice and the work
of Bob Steedman is exceptional and an inspiration to
Scottish Architects, I can think of no better candidate.”
To this day Steedman continues to play an instrumental
role for the practice as a consultant, with day to day
management carried out by Raymond Muszynski and
Philip Flockhart.
Studio LR
The past 12 months has been a benchmark year for StudioLR,
which has seen the design agency challenge its clients
creatively, positioning the consultancy as an ‘ideas led’ studio.
2009 was also earmarked by StudioLR as a year of
ambitious plans to lead the company into new markets at
home and abroad - this saw it increasing its staff numbers
(to nine) with the addition of two completely new roles,
including a new design director, while also increasing its
design turnover.
The agency, which was established in 2004, has
undertaken a number of major projects, including: the
interpretation, design and branding for the Ferrycroft
Visitor Experience; interpretation and branding of Falls of
Foyers Nature Trail; the design of Forth Ports’ Edinburgh
Harbour Planning Application; implementing Scottish and
Southern Energy’s 10th Birthday Internal Communications;
and the interpretation and design of National Trust for
Scotland’s Crarae Gardens in Argyll.
Other recent wins also include Apollo Capital Projects,
Advocates for Animals, De Vere and Forestry Commission
Scotland.
The 2009 Scottish Design Awards saw StudioLR win
the Chairman’s Award for its Self Promotional work, as
well as an award for its British Red Cross Annual Report,
while it’s Publication for Alec Finlay (Mesostic Remedy)
was Commended.

proud to support the Scottish
Design Awards in celebrating the
best examples in working with
listed buildings.
Each year the shortlisted entries show what can
be achieved with vision, excellent design and an
appreciation of our heritage. They consistently
prove that the history of a building is an asset to
development and deserve this recognition.”
