HOW TO GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D
MOST people can make enough vitamin
D from sun exposure during the summer,
but for many, it’s much harder in the
winter because people bundle up indoors
during the cold weather. Here’s how we
can make sure we get enough of it. Go to:
CASTRATION is the fitting punishment
for the alleged rapist of a
Ga-Rankuwa toddler, social activists
say, as demands for urgent action by
the hospital where she was in care and
the police continue.
The call was made by a group of
young people who gathered outside
the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital
where the 2-year old had been
admitted.
She was admitted when she showed
signs of respiratory distress and was
apparently in isolation. Yesterday’s
action was led by #NotInMyName
who, together with others, descended
on the hospital just a day after the EFF
held a demonstration.
#NotInMyName general secretary
Themba Masango told the protesters
it was heartbreaking that an innocent
child was subjected to such disgusting
behaviour at a time when South Africa
was fighting the Covid-19 pandemic
and rampant gender-based violence.
Masango expressed outrage that it
took the police more than a week to
get a case number after the case had
been reported on June 25.
“It cannot be. We need to lift our
levels of service. We need to lift our
EYE IN THE SKY
levels of care, especially when it comes
to our children.
“We cannot afford for children’s
lives to be messed up just because we
allow paedophiles to go in and out of
our institutions.”
He said there was only security at
the hospital because of the protests.
“This should be an everyday situation.
People should be monitored… even
the staff that work here should be vetted
every single time,” Masango said.
He and Siyabulela Jentile, the president
of the movement, took a moment to
thank staff members who risked their
lives to help the country to fight the
coronavirus pandemic, and who did
not deserve such disturbing news.
“Castration is what a person of this
kind needs,” Masango said, adding
that a prison sentence was not good
enough for the perpetrator of such
violence against a child.
The hospital’s chief executive, Richard
Lethebe, told the group that the
matter was being investigated by the
Department of Health and the SAPS.
The Pretoria News reported on the
incident on Monday.
Lethebe said the 2-year-old girl’s
aunt told him they were referred to
the hospital on June 15. He said the
mother was told to go home as the
child needed to be placed in isolation.
After the child returned home,
signs of abuse emerged, and a case was
opened with the police and reported
to the hospital.
Lethebe said the matter was being
taken very seriously.
The child and her family were
receiving support from outside the
hospital as the alleged perpetrator
might still be inside the facility, he
said.
Malebo Nkese and Naledi Nkoana,
who were among the protesters, said
they were disappointed that such an
incident could happen in their local
hospital. They wanted justice to prevail
to ensure it never happened again.
in SA soon. | Staff Reporter
ASTRONAUT Colonel Douglas Hurley shared images of Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria at night from the International Space Station (above is Pretoria).
Hurley, along with Robert Behnken, who had been flying to the ISS on Soyuz rockets since the US ended its Shuttle programme in 2011, become the first two American citizens to
return to Space from the US on the Dragon capsule which launched on May 27. The ISS orbits 400km above Earth, is the third-brightest object in the sky and completes multiple
orbits every day. It can be seen from the ground using a new, interactive map called Spot the Station. According to this, it will be visible from Pretoria this weekend: today,7.14pm,
3 minutes, 19°,19° above WNW, 10° above N; tomorrow, 6.23pm, 6 minutes, 40°, 10° above WSW, 10° above NNE.
• GET TESTED
City drive to prevent spreading disease
RAPULA MOATSHE
rapula.moatshe@inl.co.za
DON’T take your symptoms lightly
because you may be a Covid-19 carrier
and end up infecting other people
unknowingly.
This was the primary message
conveyed to scores of people, who
came through for Covid-19 screening
and testing conducted by the
City of Tshwane’s health services at
Ga-Rankuwa shopping centre yesterday.
Johan Human, municipal health
services’ acting deputy director in
Region 1, said the City targeted shopping
malls because they had a bigger
concentration of people.
Ga-Rankuwa was part of region 1,
which accounted for the third highest
cases of coronavirus in Tshwane.
The region with the highest number
of cases was region 3, which
included the CBD and parts of the
Pretoria West.
Human said that every Friday the
City embarked on a screening and
testing campaign in different regions
and wards.
“We usually screen about 300 to
350 people a day, and test between 50
and 100 a day.”
Agency (ANA)
Human pleaded with people not to
ignore the symptoms.
“You might have flu as a symptom
and you dismiss it as a minor problem
or as just a sinus, while in the meantime
you are positive and you are likely
to infect your whole family.”
He advised people to see a physician
if they had symptoms like coughing,
itching eyes, sore throats and flu.
“Go to your pharmacy or go to
your clinic. Let them assess you and
if it is necessary get tested. Tests are
free,” he said.
He was particularly pleased with
the response of the community to
the blitz. “We haven’t heard any negative
comments and people expressed
appreciation because it was the first
time seeing people working on the
ground since Covid started.”
Rachel Magano, 58, had symptoms
of flu, coughing and a sore throat and
was screened. “We appreciate the fact
they are screening people en masse,
but we would like them to test all of
us irrespective of the fact that one
displays the symptoms or not.”
She said there were people who
were asymptomatic who could potentially
pose a danger to their families
because they would be spreading the
virus unknowingly.
SANPARKS is waiting for provincial
borders to reopen before it will open
its accommodation in the Kruger
National Park to visitors, but work
continues on the latest addition to the
park, the Kruger Shalati: Train on the
Bridge hotel and Kruger Station.
The boutique hotel, which will
open post-lockdown, is built out of
old train carriages and sits high on
Selati Bridge, above the Sabie River in
the Selati concession of Skukuza.
It has 31 rooms; 24 in glass-walled
carriages and seven “bridge house”
rooms next to the tracks.
Some may remember the Kruger
Station, site of the old Selati Train
Grill house which operated until 2014,
and which is being transformed into a
lifestyle space that will appeal to train
fanatics, history buffs, families and
foodies and visitors to the park.
Just announced is the addition to
the staff of Andrew Atkinson as group
executive chef.
He has headed many top operations
at venues such as the Michelangelo,
Hyatt Rosebank and Hilton
Sandton. Atkinson has gained popular
appeal through his involvement in the
TV series MasterChef South Africa.
He said the Kruger Station menu
would incorporate the best dishes from
across the world, with a distinct South
African touch.
Kruger Station will cater for overnight
and day visitors to the park,
offering everything from dining in
3638 Restaurant to deli grab-and-go.
The station will have a stateof-the-art
virtual reality venue which
will run 15-minute movies depicting
the history of the park, starting
with the historic elements of the
train line, further enhanced with
virtual fireside talks with esteemed
storytellers.
In addition to job opportunities
for communities, the concession has
taken part in its first incubation project:
a partnership with bakers, Sipho
Mavundla and Believe Mavundhla
who owned the Eagle Dough Buddies,
a small bakery near Skukuza.
The Kruger Station is set to open
first, with an anticipated phased opening
of the hotel in line with the post-
Covid-19 lockdown period.
● The Kruger Shalati Concession,
which manages the Kruger Station as
well as the Kruger Shalati Train on a
