NICK BARNETT CHESS
WHAT IS THE CHESS headline you least expect?
‘Magnus Carlsen loses after 4 moves!’ And yet that
is what happened. Of course there is a back story:
Magnus was well on his way to winning the $150,000
Chessable Masters but in the semi-final against China’s
Ding Liren with a minute left, Ding was disconnected
and awarded a zero under the rules. The comments
page went ballistic.
But then Game two, with Ding as White: 1 c4 e6 2 g3
Qg5? 3 Bg2 Qxd2+?? 4 Qxd2 and Carlsen resigns with
this comment: ‘I have immense respect for Ding as a
chess player and as a human being, and … I think it was
the right thing to do.’
It was in the best sporting traditions of chess.
The final result: Magnus Carlsen won the Chessable
Masters.
Notable was the second set against Anish Giri in which
he used a strong pawn sacrifice in the opening which
prompted Yasser Seirawan to suggest it for a best game
collection and who described Carlsen’s play as ‘poetry
when he’s on his game’.
The fourth event of the Magnus Carlsen Tour, dubbed
“Legends of Chess” begins on July 21st.
* * *
ARKADY DVORKOVICH was elected FIDE president in
2018, and proclaimed that ‘women’s chess would be
women’s chess’. In many countries only 5%-10% of
adult chess players are women, although participation
is stronger in Russia, Eastern Europe, China, and India.
Among primary school children numbers are more
balanced.
True to his word an online Olympiad starting 22 July has
been announced. where the teams of six players must
include at least three women, at least one of them aged
under 20. The event lasts a month.
* * *
SLOWLY BUT surely, Chess South Africa is springing to
life. Documents on the www.chessa.com.za website:
• FIDE has recently announced the 'FIDE Online
Olympiad'. Entry to the tournament is by invitation only.
The tournament will be hosted on the LiChess online
platform on the 11 and 12th July. Unfortunately, too late
for my deadline
• Election of Commissions and Technical Committees.
The Chess SA EXBO, in line with the Chess SA
Constitution, announces the formation of the Chess
SA Online Committee. The committee members will be
appointed by the Chess SA Executive Board. In addition,
to find skilled individuals to serve on the committee
itself ExBo will accept recommendations from the
community as well. Nomination for positions on the
various Committees and Commissions is also now open.
Closing date for all nominations is 12 July 2020.
• Remember that ad hoc online tournaments can be
found on their Facebook page.
PUZZLE BY C Planck
If today is your birthday:
This new year take things your stride, you have
the strength to carry on no matter what. Might
as well face your in for a ride, but you were
prepared. So carry on regardless, you will be
fabulous!
Aries (21 March-20 April)
A week of new experiences awaits you. So time
to be prepared for anything, fate favours the
prepared. Somehow what you couldn’t get before,
is on the agenda. So take the good with the bad.
It’s all a learning curve.
Taurus (21 April-21 May)
It’s all about believing in yourself. This week you
are expressing yourself effectively, leaving nothing
to chance. You are always sure of yourself, so take
that confidence and make it work for you. It’s all in
what you feel.
Gemini (22 May-21 June)
No reason you can’t get what you want. No reason
you should stop trying. Change the game , change
the plan and see yourself trending. So keep the
pressure, and change all that wasn’t working for
you and see what is.
Cancer (22 June-23 July)
Time for a new attitude, but you knew that. New
times require new directions. So change the goal
posts. It wasn’t going, now you can turn things
around. Perhaps to see yourself getting what you
set out for.
Leo (24 July-23 August)
A week of new plans, new desires. You’ve
changed the game plan and turned things to your
favour. Time to cash in. So see to it that you get
all you want and more. it’s simply a case of you
being you.
Virgo (24 August-23 September)
In these times discard anything that’s been
FASTRACK
HAGAR
YOUR STARS
Barbara Kiselev
holding you back, and you can say I gave it my
all. Leave nothing to chance, and plot the way
forward. You are on your way, even if it doesn’t
seem that way.
Libra (24 September-23 October)
This week you have a brand new attitude. You
have changed the way you do things. All this in
the pursuit of a new dream, a new way of doing
things. Much can be achieved, all you need is the
necessary vision.
Scorpio (24 October-22 November)
You were almost there. Time to try again. Renew
those efforts to realise that dream. It’s not
impossible. Times are hard but so are you. You
can go all the way and get all you were hoping
for. Simply put, stick to it.
Sagittarius (23 November-21 December)
In these times it’s a good idea to follow your
heart. Perhaps you’ll stumble onto a good thing.
It’s not a matter of what you want, but who you
want. Yes, even now you can find love. So keep
an eye out.
Capricorn (22 December-20 January)
Before all this started you were on your way. Time
for a reset and try again, and see where you go. So
follow those plans, they are achievable, don’t throw
them away. And yes you can say “I am who I am”.
Aquarius (21 January-19 February)
You had an idea of how to approach things, now
run with it and see what happens. All you need to
know there’s room for innovation. So try something
new and maybe you can get what you want.
Pisces (20 February-20 March)
You can see clearly now, you need that selfconfidence.
The way you approach problems
reveals who you are. Time to take a difficult
situation and turn it to your advantage. You can be
all that you can be, and don’t forget it.
Contract: 4♥ by South
Opening Lead: ♦K. What is your plan?
Recommended Line: The key is this: if
East holds the ♣K, a spade lead through
your ♠K could mean you lose three
spades and a club. You could claim that
was unlucky, but you are after success,
not sympathy. This is the way: let West
win the first trick. If West now switches
to a club, win with the ace, and cash the
♦A, discarding your ♣J. Then play the
♣Q. If East plays low, discard a spade.
If West wins, your ♠K is not vulnerable
for the time being. In reality, East covers,
and you ruff. Later, when drawing their
last trump, using the ♥K, you will cash
an established club. You score seven
heart tricks, one diamond, and two clubs.
Luck doesn’t come into it. Good play
overcomes the bad lie of the cards.
