Side Trip:
We spent many hours in our boat
over the Fourth of July weekend.
Many of you made the same decision,
and with temperatures in the 90s, little
wind and plenty of humidity, it was the best
place to be.
After watching the
West Okoboji fireworks
display on Saturday
evening from
the “front row” with
our boat parked just
outside the restricted
area, I declared it the
best show ever.
And then I realized
I say that every year.
And each year that’s
how I feel. I can’t
imagine Fourth of July
without Okoboji.
MYRNA
WAGNER
What I can do without are people budging
the line while boats are waiting to get
under the east-west bridge. I realize at the
top of the “funnel” it’s a little iffy as to who
was there first, but when you get close to the
bridge, you know who’s ahead of you. Stop
pretending you don’t see all those other
boats waiting their turn!
Another thing that concerns me is people
ignoring DNR rules regarding life jackets
and number of passengers on personal
watercraft. I see the need for transporting to
and from docks — we’ve done it ourselves
many times, especially with guests who had
a work shift for part of the day — but please
be safe.
Even after mentioning the rules to some
folks we saw last weekend, they completely
ignored us and towed two floaties with
eight passengers behind one jet ski.
That’s the type of scene that could end
badly on so many levels, and not what any
of us want for our wonderful Okoboji vacation
destination.
Here’s to enjoying the month of July —
safely and responsibly.

SUMMER BASH
Round Lake Vineyards hosts celebration of summer
Summer 2020 is very different in
a lot of ways, but there are still
reasons to celebrate what’s left
of the season.
And the organizers at Round Lake
Vineyards & Winery are giving everyone
a chance to do just that.
They will once again be hosting
their Summer Bash from 11 a.m.-8
p.m. Saturday, July 18.
The party gets rolling in the morning
with a few different options for
fun.
“We have hosted Summer Bash
for the last few years. It’s a great way
to ring in the second half of the year
with beer sampling, crafts and vendors
and live music to keep you fully
entertained,” said Vanessa Moore,
the marketing & brand manager at
Round Lake Vineyards & Winery.
Beer sampling and the vendor
sales takes place from noon-4 p.m.
Live music kicks off at 12:30 p.m.
The entire day is geared toward offering
something up for everyone in
the family.
“This party is open to families,
young single people and those of
us more seasoned in life! It’s a wellrounded
lively event for all ages —
with plenty of good food and great
fun,” Moore said.
The event got its start as a way to
fill a Saturday that was open on the
calendar and has grown from there.
“Funny enough, we didn’t have a
wedding planned on a Saturday a
couple years ago, and thought we’d
open up The Cellar and lakeside
patio for a public party to use the
space! It turned into something we
host year after year and the vendors
and live music keeps getting better,”
Moore said.
“It’s an opportunity for an outdoor
activity and to enjoy the warm
summer days under the shade of the
trees. We’ve had people park their
pontoons at the U-shaped dock and
hop out for a fun afternoon of food
and friends!”
While they are still ready to have
fun, things will be a little different
thing year at the Summer Bash.
“We started out with a fair-like
atmosphere with bands and vendors
all day. This year, because of
COVID-19 we are scaling back.
There will still be vendors and music
through the afternoon. Beer tasting
with social distancing available. The
idea is to have a safe place to be on a
summer afternoon,” Moore said.
“If you want to get food and beverages
from the winery and picnic
with the family, this is the place to
do it. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs
if you want to get away from the
building. There are acres of space
here to kick back and hear the music.”
F
Round Lake Vineyards &
Winery will once again be
hosting their Summer Bash.
The event will take place
from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday,

live music and more. SUB-

Farewell
Angelina
Pearson Lakes Art Center sets stage for country concert on July 14
At a Glance:
WHAT: Farewell Angelina
WHERE: Pearson Lakes Art Center,
2201 Highway 71, Okoboji, IA
WHEN: 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, July 14
COST: $25/members, $35/nonmembers
CONTACT: 712-332-7013
ONLINE: www.lakesart.org
There won’t be actually doors
to open, but the Pearson Lakes
Art Center is ready to welcome
everyone back for the their first big
concert of the summer.
Farewell Angelina, an all-female
foursome from Nashville, will perform
at the art center’s outdoor amphitheater
at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July
14.
Tickets are $25 for members and
$35 for nonmembers.
Performing arts director Rachelle
Fratzke encourages anyone interested
to purchase tickets in advance.
She also expects a fabulous show
will be in store for those who attend.
“Their harmonies, their energy,
they have great violins and guitars —
they have everything,” Fratzke said.
“They do some covers but they’re also
songwriters and have a lot of their
own music.”
In fact, each member of the
group — Nicole Witt, Andrea Young,
Lisa Torres and Ashley Gearing —
enjoyed successful solo careers in
Nashville before forming the group,
Farewell Angelina, so named for a
Bob Dylan tune.
That success continued as a group
as they’ve enjoyed singing the national
anthem for Thursday Night
Football, and performing at The
Unbridled Eve Gala for the Kentucky
Derby, the ACM All-Star Jam and festivals
in Switzerland, Norway, Spain,
France, Indonesia and Malaysia.
They’ve also been named among
Rolling Stone’s “New Artists You
Need To Know,” and Roughstock’s
“Ones to Watch.” They have opened
shows for Kenny Chesney, Old Dominion,
Frankie Ballard, Jake Owen,
Billy Currington, Maroon 5 and
Trace Adkins, among many other
major musical acts.
Fratzke thinks they’ll be a perfect
fit and is excited to see them perform
outside particularly.
“The fact that we’re doing this outside
is going to be awesome — they
can really crank their music up!”
Fratzke said.
There will be a cash bar available.
Guests can bring their own lawn
chairs or use those provided by the
art center.
“It’s beautiful outside right now
and there is plenty of room to spread
out. Everyone should feel comfortable
coming by,” Fratzke said.
So stop on by and say hello to Farewell
Angelina. F

Its beauty belies its difficulty.
That could possibly be said about
the course overall, but it especially
applies to the fifth hole at Emerald
Hills Golf Club in Arnolds Park.
The course offers a wide variety of
distances on a superbly scenic, treelined
and hilly terrain with each hole
presenting its own unique challenge.
“What differentiates our course
is that there are no two holes alike,”
said golf pro Randy Rohlfsen. “It’s
varied enough with par threes, fours
and fives that you have to use most
of the clubs in your bag in a round of
golf.”
Doglegs are a big factor across the
course that emphasize and amplify
hazards such as trees, bunkers and
water.
The fifth hole makes use of all of
them.
“It’s a beautiful hole off the tee,
which is elevated so you’re hitting
down to the fairway. Then once
you’re down there you’re hitting
back up to the elevated green,”
Rohlfsen said.
Don’t let the beauty distract you
from the challenge that lies ahead.
“It’s the longest par four on the
course with a dogleg left and the last
50-60 yards is straight uphill to a
tough, two-tiered green. The last 40-
50 yards up to the green is striped as
rough so you can get hung up in that.
It’s just a good, hard hole,” Rohlfsen
said. “It’s tough to get on in regulation
and once you’re there it’s a difficult
putting green, that’s why it’s
rated number one. You’ll walk away
thinking it sure felt like a par five.”
I’ll vouch for that.
Stepping to the tee box (I chose the
white) it was 408 yards to my target.
So of course I promptly sliced my
drive into the small pond just ahead.
Splash!
My next attempt looked much
more like what’s supposed to happen.
Long, straight and landing in
the middle of the fairway. If I can
ever figure out how to do this the
first time around I might be on to
something.
I could already tell, however, that
there would be zero chance I’d be
getting to the green in regulation,
even if I disregarded the fact that I
had hit into the water.
The view was picturesque indeed,
but it also made that little flag sitting
on top of the hill seem like miles
away.
It took me two more shots just to
get close. One where I just clipped
the top of the ball, but was lucky
that it rolled a decent distance, and
one low, line drive that covered a fair
amount of ground. It was the latter
that ended up in the rough at the
base of the hill that Rohlfsen had
talked about leading to the green.
With that in mind I ended up putting
a bit too much behind my next
shot, which put me in the unenviable
position of having to chip back
toward the green. Go long this time
and I’d be back where I started.
Luckily I managed to kee from doing
that, but the ball still rolled into
thicker grass just beyond the fringe
of the green.
Despite all the trouble getting
there, it’s the next shot that I’ll remember.
I elected to stick with the wedge
and somehow struck the ball just
right. It followed the line I’d imagined
perfectly stopping just a few
inches short of the cup, allowing me
to tap in for a large number on the
scorecard.
Would it have been better if it’d
rolled a little further and dropped in?
Sure.
But the fact that I’d executed a shot
that played out nearly exactly as I’d
imagined was more than enough for
me.
It was the kind of shot that keeps
me coming back, however infrequently,
to the game of golf. Sometimes
I even manage to string together
enough shots for a good hole.
As far as tying it all together across
a full round? I’m still waiting for the
chance to tell that story. F

Part Two: Mary Kennedy shares
history of Iowa Great Lakes
History is a subject that we all
study in school, but sometimes
our own history can be lost.
Mary Kennedy, the curator of the
Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum,
works hard to make sure that the
history of the Iowa Great Lakes is
remembered.
Here is another installation of
historical tidbits that she thought
people might find of interest.
There were serious
discussions about
building a lock
between Spirit Lake
and East Okoboji Lake.
In 1911 plans and specifications
were looking feasible for a lock between
Spirit Lake And East Okoboji.
Plans before 1911 had failed because
it would entail tremendous
expense.
In 1920 plans were made for a
spillway and engineers were working
on plans for a lock. The lock would
pass under the railroad and the highway.
In the end a lock was never built.

The Queen II’s maiden
voyage had some
hiccups.
On June 21, 1986, the Queen II
made her maiden voyage with Captain
Steve Kennedy at the helm. It
wasn’t a totally auspicious beginning
as excerpts from Mary Kennedy’s
own journal entry from that day reflects.
Saturday, June 21, 1986
Dear Diary,
Today was the day of the maiden
voyage, however it did not get off to a
good start. At 3
a.m. a violent
storm came up
and Steve went to
see if the Queen II
was OK. She had
pulled up the dock
and mangled it,
but was still hanging
on.
Steve had one
quarter and called
his friend Tom for
help. Finally Steve came home at 7:30
a.m., exhausted, but with the big day
still ahead. … Backing the Queen II out
was not easy for Captain Steve as hundreds
of boats circled around her, but he
did it and we were under way on our trip
around West Okoboji.
All the boats followed along honking
and cheering. There were hors d’oeuvres
and Champagne and great fun was had
by all. It was truly wonderful and Captain
Steve was an excellent pilot. People
lined up to visit him in the pilothouse
and they took his picture and asked for
his autograph. Our radio station even
broadcast the whole event.
Then we had a problem and that was
that we ran out of ice. So an announcement
was made by the radio station and
pretty soon a pontoon came with more
ice and everyone was glad. But, then we
ran out again and when they brought
more, one of the passengers, who tried to
catch a bag of ice that was being tossed
up and missed, jumped overboard to
retrieve it. Luckily he was not hurt. F
