Last year, writer Tom Taylor (DCeased) and artist Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan) teamed for DCeased: A Good Day to Die,

a one-shot detailing how the events of DCeased affected several DC characters—including fan-favorite antihero John Constantine.

Between Taylor’s obvious fondness for Constantine and how well-suited Robertson seemed for a Hellblazer story, it was hard not to want

more—and here it is. Taylor and Robertson are teaming for Hellblazer: Rise and Fall, a three-issue, Prestige Plus DC Black Label miniseries

starting in September. Rise and Fall starts with a billionaire inexplicably falling out of the sky only to be gruesomely skewered on a church

spire—and then it keeps happening, with the mysterious murders somehow tied to Constantine’s youth.

DC Connect talked with Taylor to find out what he finds so compelling about Hellblazer, teaming with future “quintessential Constantine artist”

Robertson, and the “good, old-fashioned violence and gore” they’ve got planned for the bimonthly series.

DC Connect: From Injustice to DCeased, your

affection for John Constantine is clear. What is

it about the character that you love writing?

Tom Taylor: I’ve been a fan of John forever.

The Golden Age of Vertigo Hellblazer is easily

in my top 10 series, from Jamie Delano’s

spectacular beginning, and especially the

work of [Garth] Ennis and [Steve] Dillon.

I love writing characters who speak truth to

power, and John doesn’t just speak truth to

power, he tears power a new one any chance

he gets. He’s also not your standard, perfect

hero. He makes a lot of mistakes and people

in his orbit get hurt. But there’s a beautiful

heart beating in the bastard.

He never forgets his less than humble

beginnings. He uses that chip on his

shoulder to fight against those who think

they’re above him and his, and there’s

something very cathartic about class

warfare where the upper class doesn’t win

every damn battle.

DCC: What are you looking to do in this story

that readers haven’t seen from Constantine

before?

TT: This is a story I’ve had in my head for

about 10 years, certainly when it comes

to the inciting incidents and some of the

twists and turns. This is a very twisted

book, but I actually want to give people

exactly the John they’ve seen before. I want

to write the bloke who steps out of the

shadows with the smirk, the lit cigarette,

and all the answers. I want a story of shocks

and sadness, and triumph in the face of

utter horror.

DCC: It’s extremely exciting to see you

back with Darick Robertson, following the

Constantine-centric DCeased: A Good Day

to Die (and to see Robertson drawing the

Hellblazer story it feels like he was destined

to do). What’s it been like teaming together

on Rise and Fall?

TT: It’s funny. I’ve often heard talk of Darick

Robertson being one of the quintessential

Constantine artists…and he’s never drawn

Hellblazer in his career. People just assume

he has because he’s so perfectly suited.

I’m a huge Darick Robertson fan and

have been since the opening pages of

Transmetropolitan. His art puts a huge smile

on my face when it appears in my inbox,

especially his gorgeous inks. Darick brings

the cheek, the grit, the horror, the humor,

and the heart to John in a way only he can.

By the time this story is told, the myth of

Darick Robertson being a quintessential

Constantine artist will definitely be a

reality.

DCC: Rise and Fall puts a focus on

Constantine’s youth. How do you describe the

adolescent Constantine?

TT: He’s almost exactly the same, but

shorter, and with more to prove. He’s

reckless, and eager to show off and to

escape a pretty awful home life by getting

into trouble.

DCC: The solicitation text mentions a

character connected to John’s youth, Aisha

Bukhari—what can you share about her, and

the role she plays?

TT: Aisha is a friend from John’s childhood.

She’s there the day it all goes wrong. And

what they experienced on that dark day

has big ramifications in their future for

Detective Aisha and John the magician.

DCC: While DCeased isn’t necessarily family

friendly, Rise and Fall is a mature readers

title—how are you taking advantage of the

looser restrictions that come with that?

TT: Picture all those stars covering half

of John’s words. Now picture them all

removed. That’s the main part. That said,

Darick and I aren’t holding back with some

good, old-fashioned violence and gore,

when appropriate.
