Disseminating Medical Knowledge and Skills Globally

International Medical Summer School
Manchester, 13 th - 17 th August 2012
Event Overview
Recent changes in the training structure for junior doctors coupled with a reduction in the
duration of training have necessitated doctors to choose their ‘lifetime’ careers within 1-2 years
of leaving medical school. To decide on a speciality at such an early stage can clearly be an
arduous task since exposure to the competitive surgical and medical specialities during
medical school is limited. This has resulted in junior doctors (foundation years) reaching the
‘cross roads’ of choosing a career without a clear understanding of the merits and demerits,
pressures and challenges, and long-term prospects and future of different specialities.
This can be prevailed if medical students decide on a speciality whilst at university and
channel their efforts in developing a sound understanding during hospital placements, and
diligently construct a tailored portfolio. In addition, they will clearly hold an advantage during
job application and, later, in interviews. Tailoring the portfolio will involve choosing appropriate
clinical placements and electives, undertaking clinical audits and/or basic science research,
presentations and publications, and demonstrating a clear and purposeful interest in that
speciality.
Consultants, Registrars and junior doctors from each speciality will give the students the
essential knowledge and information about that speciality, offer them advice and guidance,
and provide them with the opportunities to develop their portfolio.
In addition to learning, students will also get the chance to interact with their peers from other
medical schools in the UK and beyond during the various social activities and programmes
that will be arranged for the long summer evenings!
2012
International Medical Summer School
Manchester, 13 th - 17 th August 2012
Event Overview
This week-long event is aimed at helping medical undergraduates develop a strong clinical,
academic and research portfolio that will help them to pursue a career in a competitive surgical or
medical speciality on completion of medical school. It will also help students obtain essential
knowledge about their chosen speciality and develop the confidence to interact with consultants
whilst undertaking clinical placements. Last year, the event was officially supported by Manchester
University Medical School, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, North West Postgraduate
Deanery, UG department of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Medical Protection Society
and Manchester Medics Surgical Society and their support is anticipated this year as well.
On day 1 of the course, Consultants from various specialities will provide the students with an
overview (‘taster’) of different specialities. This will be particularly beneficial for students who wish
to get a better understanding of the various career options and are yet to decide on a particular
speciality.
On days 2 and 3, in addition to essential theoretical information about individual specialities, there
will be sessions on basic surgical and suturing skills, basic life support, advanced life support,
advanced trauma life support, basic orthopaedic skills, laparoscopic skills, performing an ECG,
undertaking ultrasound examination and certain medical procedures such as inserting a central
line.
The fourth day of the course will provide the student with pertinent information on various
academic/research aspects such as intercalating and carrying out clinical and basic science
research (leading to MSc/MRes/MPhil/PhD). This day will also cover aspects related to undertaking
clinical audits, oral and poster presentations, and publications, as well as discuss the pertinent
aspects of academic training/academic career.
On the morning of the final day of the course, the students will be given necessary information on
developing and nurturing a portfolio, recent advances and future of their chosen speciality, and
tips on entering a specialist training programme. In the afternoon, there will be talks from appropriate
leaders who will provide information on careers in Conflict Medicine, International Medicine
and Public Health.
Mentorship by Consultants and Specialists will be offered for interested students.
Lively social events will be available every day after the course and will take advantage of the long
summer evenings!
Manchester, 13 th - 17 th August 2012
Choosing Speciality
On day 1, you will be divided into two broad groupings – ‘Medicine’ and ‘Surgery’ and will be
provided with a broad overview of all the individual sub-specialities.
From day 2, you will be placed in the group that comprises your speciality (e.g., neurosurgery,
cardiology, plastic surgery) and will be given an in-depth knowledge and information regarding
the speciality of your choice. During the registration process, you will be asked to choose your
broad career choice (i.e., medicine or surgery) and then you will be asked to choose from one of the
seven programmes (speciality grouping) that comprise the different specialities. There are only 30
places available in each speciality grouping.
Monday 13 th August 2012
Meeting Place: University Place, University of Manchester
Time: 19:30 h
Subsidised cost: £7.50
International Medical Summer School
Manchester, 13 th - 17 th August 2012
On Monday night, we will head down Wilmslow Road to a restaurant in
Manchester’s famous “Curry Mile”. No surprise it will be an Indian Restaurant
and the choice will be either Chicken, Lamb or Vegetarian curry
dishes served with either rice or naan bread (all food served here will be
Halal). We will meet at University Place at 7:15pm and take a 15 minute
walk together to the restaurant. The cost for this event will be £7.50 and
we can take our own drinks.
After the meal, you have the choice of either –
Going to a Shisha bar in “Curry Mile” or taking a 10 minute walk to the
Vodka Revolution bar (located in Fallowfield - one of Manchester’s best
student areas).
Thursday 16 th August 2012
Meeting Place: Missoula
Time: 20:30 hrs
Cost: Paid by organisers
For the last social event we’ve hired out a floor in the club Missoula. We’ll
have our own DJ and the floor lead onto its own terrace overlooking the
canal. This event will be starting from 8:30pm and ending around 1-2 am.
This event is paid for by the summer school organisers. The club is
situated in Deansgate Locks and you will have to again make your own
way there (map will be provided).
SOCIAL PROGRAMME
Tuesday 14 th August 2012
Meeting Place: Grosvenor Accommodation
Time: 18:30 h
Subsidised cost: £5.00
Tuesday night we will be going to the Parrs Wood Entertainment Centre
for Bowling and Laser Quest. We will leave University Place at 6:30pm and
take a hired bus to the Entertainment Centre. Two games will be on offer:
you can either play one game of bowling and one game of Laser Quest or
two games of bowling. A coach will leave the entertainment centre at
11:00pm and take us back to the accommodation.
The games of bowling/Laser Quest will start from 8:00pm until 10:00pm,
giving you the chance to get some food if you wish or just have a look
around. There are a few restaurants in the centre - some of which use Halal
meat (make sure to ask before you order though).
This complex also offers pool tables, arcades and a cinema if you would
prefer something different but these activities are not included in the
deals we have made.
The cost for this event (the games + bus journeys) is £5.
Wednesday 15 th August 2012
Meeting Place 1: Grosvenor Casino
Time: 19:45 h
Subsidised cost £5.00
Meeting Place 2: Baa Bar in Deansgate Locks
Time: 23:00 h
Cost: Paid by organisers
This night we will be heading to the Grosvenor Casino on George Street.
The night will start from 7:45pm onwards but please feel free to come
later if you wish.
This venue has generously offered £5 free gambling chips, a free drink,
complementary hotdogs and free tuition for games such as Blackjack,
Poker and Roulette. This is great for just a £5 entry. The casino itself offers
low-risk slot machines or more high stakes games such as roulette, poker,
blackjack, etc, so don’t worry about it being able to cater for your
preferences.
You will be making your own way to the Casino (map will be provided).
When most people have finished with the Casino, anyone who still wants
to stay out should come to Baa Bar (in Deansgate Locks). There will be a
good number of us going there and it will be a fun way to end the night
in a new, trendy bar in one of Manchester’s best party districts.
