involved in sperm whaling off<br />

Stewart Island, he entered the<br />

Marine Dept and became first officer<br />

on the lighthouse ship Hinemoa.<br />

He was an officer of The Knight<br />

Commander when she was captured<br />

and sunk by the Russian Fleet off<br />

Yokohama in 1904, He was later<br />

Superintendent of Mercantile Marine<br />

In Wellington The collection includes<br />

his sextant, a personal diary/sketch<br />

book of lighthouses, landings and<br />

anchorages in NZ an early album of<br />

sepia photographs showing whaling<br />

on the Hananui II in and around<br />

Whangamumu and Campbell Island,<br />

catching albatross, and numerous<br />

others, various personal letters and<br />

documents, clippings, whale tooth,<br />

booklet on Maori Whaling, etc.<br />
