This month’s salute to a veteran
goes out posthumously
as follows:
Salute to my dad, Joe Waples,
who would have been
100 on July 23 this year. Dad
served in the U.S. Navy from
around 1943 and was honorably
discharged in December
1945. Dad served on the USS
Yosemite in the Philippines.
Salute to PFC Dorothy
Emma (Hess) Jacob. Ms.
Jacob would have been
PFC Jacob
ninety-nine
in September
this year.
She served
in the U.S.
Army Air
Corps from
January
1945 thru
December
1945. She
sewed parachutes as well as
serving as a driver for high
ranking officials. Dorothy just
passed in June 2020.
I would also like to recognize
2020 East Central grad
Joe Buescher
Joe Buescher.
Joe
leaves for
basic
training on
July 20 at
Fort Benning,
Georgia. He
will be
training for
Airborne Infantry with his
goal of becoming an Army
Ranger. Best of luck, and I
salute you, Joe.

If you attended the Memorial
Day services led by
the North Dearborn American
Legion Post 452, you
were treated to a trumpet
solo at the conclusion of
the services. Traditionally,
a trumpeter performs taps
to conclude the ceremony.
After John Klosterman
played taps, the crowd was
pleasantly surprised to hear
an echo of taps and service
songs performed by Jim
Carter. Jim surprised the
legion members and crowd
by playing at all four cemeteries-
East Fork in Guilford,
St. John’s in Dover, St.
Martin’s in Yorkville, and
St. Paul’s in New Alsace.
Thank you, Jim, for sharing
your talent!
New Alsace gained two
new residents in May. Matt
and Missy Fox and big
sister Mia welcomed twins
Luke Matthew and William
Michael Fox, born on May
11. Proud grandparents are
Irvin and Rosemary Fox.

Retirement Planning During Changing Times.
According to the United Nations, across the globe, people older
than 65 now outnumber children under five for the first time in
history. In 1960, the average woman gave birth to five children
in her lifetime; by 2017, that ratio had dropped to 2.4 children
per woman. Meanwhile, our life expectancy has increased
around the world. In 1960, the average lifespan was just over
52 years of age; in 2017 the life expectancy was 72.
Today, more than 60 percent of married households with
children have two income earners. Yet many still struggle
to make ends meet. That makes it difficult to save for both
the exponentially rising cost of college and retirement. With
fewer children in subsequent generations to contribute to the
economy and bolster Social Security and Medicare programs,
there may be fewer resources available to support the number
of older adults in the future.
It’s worth remembering that 2019 began with the longest U.S.
government shutdown in history. On top of that challenging
start to the year, some economists and media pundits have
been suggesting we may be headed for a recession in the
