extremely close, like father 

and son. As I say in the book’s 

introduction, he was the best 

man I’ve ever known. 

As the years rolled by, I 

began toying with the idea of 

writing something about my 

time as the Harrison area’s 

news guy. I knew some stories 

needed telling and people well 

worth remembering. 

I thought seriously about 

doing a book of fictional short 

stories based on true events 

and even tried to write one. 

But it took me forever and I 

realized that wasn’t the way 

to go. 

I tossed around some other 

ideas before it finally hit me. 

Maybe I could try telling a 

story through my From Here 

columns. 

There was a large body of 

work I could mine. I wrote 

upwards of 1,000 columns, 

some of them state and 

national award winners. If I 

could find the right ones and 

develop some sort of thread, 

maybe there could be a book. 

And maybe my body of work 

wouldn’t be forever confined 

in those big black books at the 

Harrison library. 

On March 2, 2022, I went 

to the library for the first 

of 24 trips over about six 

weeks. And it was a hell of a 

journey. I read every column 

I wrote and often got sidetracked 

by stories and photos 

that brought back a flood of 

memories. 

There were prideful moments 

mixed in with a lot of 

cringe-inducing ones. There 

were tears, chuckles, belly 

laughs, groans, and I’m sure 

times when the library ladies 

thought they might have a 

crazy guy on their hands. But 

I finally managed to come up 

with close to 100 columns I 

could live with and I’m pretty 

sure the library ladies were

Josh Ringer was the runaway 

choice among voters for 

Indiana’s Mr. Football Award. 

Ringer received over 66% of 

the votes of Indiana Football 

Coaches’ Association voters 

with the next vote getter 

receiving just 10%. Ringer is 

a humble By player who truly enjoyed

His career total of 6,640

touchdowns are both school 

records, and the rushing total 

puts him at 14th on the state 

list of career rushing yards. 

He had a streak of 28 games 

with over 100 yards rushing 

and 27 straight games scoring 

a touchdown. 

The four-year starter in the 

EC backfield for Jake Meiners 

becomes the second Mr. 

Football from the perennial 

state-contending program. 

Running back Josh Martini 

led the EC offense in the 

1990s as EC was state runnerup 

in 1993 and state champion 

in 1994. Josh Martini won 

Mr. Football after his remarkable 

senior season. 

The EIAC now claims three 

Mr. Football award winners. 

The first Mr. Football in 

Indiana was awarded in 1992 

and was placed in the hands 

of Franklin County’s Alex 

Smith. 

Ringer will take his abilities 

and talents to the Miami 

Redhawks in Oxford, Ohio. 

He will seek to add to a 

 

 

honors- Jack Dirkhising, Jack 

Seals, Carter Dozier, and Ben 

Becker. 

The 3A IFCA All-State 

team included one area player 

in Batesville senior Bobby 

Weiler, who was named to the 

team as a tight end. The 6’2” 

240-pound senior recently decided 

to continue his playing 

career at the University of St. 

Francis and plans to pursue 

a career in education at the 

NAIA school in Fort Wayne. 

Like the Trojans, the Batesville 

Bulldogs claimed both 

MVPs in the EIAC Leaders 

Division (smallest four 

schools in the conference). 

Gage Pohlman garnered 

EIAC Leaders Division Offensive 

MVP and Weiler was 

awarded EIAC Leaders Division 

Defensive MVP. 

The conference and sectional 

champion Bulldogs 

added these others to the 

all-conference team- Cade 

Kaiser, Will Jaisle, Max 

Amberger, Carson Meyer, 

Deacon Hamilton, Carter 

Bohman, Alex Krekeler, Zach 

Davidson, and Collin Wells. 

South Dearborn also had 

players earn all-conference 

honors- Adam Kunkel, Mahlon 

Bressert, Ryan Richard, Blake 

Pruss, Brady Ballart, Brayden 

Johnson, Oli Babcock, and 

Caiden Thompson. 

Coach Ryan Langferman’s 

Milan Indians placed a trio 

of players on the 1A IFCA 

All-State Team. Senior Ethan 

Pierce was named to the team 

as a tight end. The other two 

Indians were named Junior 

All-State. Landon Stanley 

was named as an offensive 

lineman and Dylan Offill was 

named as a defensive back. 

Area coaches enjoyed some 

accolades at the conclusion 

of the season. East Central 

Quarterbacks Coach and Pass 

Game Coordinator Lou Sipe 

was honored as the 4A Assistant 

Coach of the Year by 

the IFCA. 

The coaches of the EIAC 

champions are also awarded 

the title of EIAC Coach of 

the Year. East Central’s Jake 

Meiners and Batesville’s 

Evan Ulery received these 

honors for their respective 

division conference titles. 

Batesville’s Bobby Weiler 

was named 3A All-State 

and EIAC Defensive MVP 

while also being honored to 

receive the coveted Robert 

Raver Award at the team’s 

banquet. Weiler played both 

linebacker and tight end for 

the sectional champion Bulldogs.

to a strong start on the mat 

this season. Adrian Wilburn’s 

team is currently 12-0 dual 

competition and headed to 

the Battle in the Bear Den at 

Monroe Central in hopes of 

further success. 

The team hosted a 7-way 

meet and claimed the team 

title by going 6-0 on the day.

nice to know we’ve turned the 

corner to spring even though 

we have months to go! 

I’ve written in the past 

about the Turnover for Hunger 

project organized by the 

Ripley County Community 

Foundation (RCCF) and the 

final tally is in for the 2023 

fund raiser. The Milan Indians 

varsity football team along 

with the Batesville Bulldogs 

forced a total of fifty-three 

combined turnovers this past 

season to raise $32,825. 

Through the generosity of 

supporters this enabled RCCF 

to give $5000 each to the 

five participating elementary 

schools. These funds are put 

to good use with the Weekend 

Backsack program which currently 

has about six hundred 

students participating. 

If Santa left a new pair of 

shoes under your tree, you 

are in good company as many

a national non-profit whose 

mission is to provide children 

in need with new athletic 

shoes, something that gives 

kids confidence and self-esteem. 

American Legion Post 

235 donated to purchase the 

discounted shoes that were 

given to one hundred twenty 

students. 

For the second year in a 

row, students participated in 

Wreaths Across America by 

helping to place wreaths on 

veterans’ graves. This national 

day of recognition honors 

those who have served to preserve 

our freedoms. Members 

of the football teams and their 

families and coaches joined 

together to deliver over two 

hundred thirty wreaths to four 

local cemeteries on Dec. 16. 

Congratulations to local 

singer and songwriter, Rachel 

Holt, who recently signed a 

contract with Baste Records 

in Nashville. Rachel has been 

in the recording studio and 

her Missin’ Home is due to be 

released this month. The Holt 

family has a long tradition of 

musical success and Rachel is 

sure to continue the trend.

Winners of the prestigious 


Scholarship (LECS) 

were recently announced for 

Dearborn, Franklin, Ohio, 

and Ripley Counties. Recipients 

receive a four-year, 

full-tuition scholarship to the 

Indiana college of their choice 

along with a $900 yearly 

stipend for required books and 

equipment. 

The scholarships are the 

result of a statewide Lilly 

Endowment initiative to help 

Hoosier students reach higher 

levels of education. One hundred 

forty-three scholarships 

were awarded statewide. 

Dearborn County 

Two Dearborn County high 

school seniors are the 2024 

recipients of a prestigious 


Scholarship. The Dearborn 

Community Foundation 

(DCF) staff made surprise 

visits to award the full-tuition 

scholarships to East Central 

High School’s Alexandra 

Seubert and Oldenburg Academy’s 

Lily Dennis. 

“Alexandra and Lily epitomize 

what the Lilly Endowment 

Community Scholarship 

is all about community involvement, 

academic achievement, 

character, and leadership,” 

said Fred McCarter, 

Executive Director of DCF. 

“They were selected from 

among a competitive group of 

applicants for this high honor 

and our community should be 

very proud of Alexandra, Lily, 

and the other four finalists.” 

Ms. Seubert of Hubbel’s 

Corner is the daughter of 

John and 

Maureen 

Seubert. 

She plans to 

study 

Marketing at 

Butler 

University 

Alexandra Seubert or Indiana 

University. 

Ms. Seubert shared, “I’m so 

happy and proud that all of 

my hard work and dedication 

paid off this way.” 

At East Central, Ms. Seubert 

has been active in many 

clubs and groups: National 

Honor Society; Family, Career 

and Community Leaders 

of America (FCCLA); Student 

Council; Community Advocating 

for Substance-Abuse 

Awareness (CASA); Trojan 

Exchange; Trojan Young Life 

(Leader); Girl Scouts (Silver 

Award); Fellowship of Christian 

Athletes (FCA); and All 

Saints Catholic Youth Ministry. 

As a member of FCCLA, 

Seubert was Vice President of 

the ECHS chapter and a state 

officer/Vice President of the 

State Project. As a member of 

FCCLA, she also earned Gold 

Medals for the State Chapter 

Service Project Portfolio and 

a third place for the FCCLA 

Nationals Gold Medal Chapter 

Service Project Portfolio. 

She’s also received the 

FCCLA Ultimate Leadership 

Award, and Indiana State FC- 

CLA Gold and Silver Medal 

Job Interviews. Seubert also 

participated in softball and 

track at ECHS. She also completed 

a significant number 

of volunteer service hours 

and was employed during the 

summer and the school year. 

Lily Dennis of Manchester 

Township is the daughter of 

Sara and 

Randy 

Dennis. She 

plans to 

major in 

Criminal 

Justice with 

a minor in 

Lily Dennis Political 

Science at 

Indiana University. Concerning 

being a new Lilly Scholar, 

Ms. Dennis shared, “I’m 

really grateful. I’m thankful. I 

was grateful just for the 

opportunity to apply. This is
