MAYOR & PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Just as in many communities worldwide,
Portland’s resilience and strength have shined the
past few months as our residents have worked
together to deal with the devastating effects of
the COVID-19 health crisis. Almost overnight our
lives changed, and our health and well-being
became dependent on our ability to adapt and
adjust our lifestyles, something I’m proud to say
Portlanders were more than willing to do.
Normally I would use this message to extol
the vibrancy of Portland’s many amenities, our great restaurants and food carts,
nightclubs, galleries, theaters and parks. I would urge Rose Festival visitors to sample
from Portland’s diverse menu of offerings and encourage residents to widen their
experiences and search out new things to enjoy.
Instead I feel the need to counsel patience and perseverance as we continue our
journey through the unknowns of this pandemic. I believe we will emerge from this
crisis even stronger than we were before, because Portland is a city of leaders, a
place populated with strong minds and hearts.
Portland’s Official Festival has shown a high caliber of leadership during this crisis.
I am thankful that the Rose Festival has found ways to celebrate our city safely,
even under these unprecedented and challenging circumstances. Events like the
Portland Rose Festival are essential to building community, and during times of crisis,
maintaining and strengthening community is key to our recovery.
Please continue to take care of yourselves and your community,
When we chose the theme ‘2020 Rose Vision’
for this year’s festival, we could never have
anticipated that by the end of March our planning
would be more fittingly called our ‘2020 Evolving
Vision.’ When we started announcing this year’s
Rose Festival Court, we were visiting their high
schools as normal; the final four princesses were
introduced on a social networking platform, with
a television camera pointing at a computer.
When we announced we were postponing our
big outdoor events, we put our creative minds into planning for community-building
activities that could take place at a safe distance. Our ‘Parading in Place’ concept was
born, and the enthusiastic participation of the public reminded us that even in the
middle of a pandemic, it’s important to celebrate.
In last year’s souvenir program, I referred back to the 1919 Victory Rose Festival, an
event that had to be re-branded and re-funded after the challenges of World War I
and the pandemic of 1918. I reflected on the ultimate victory of having sustained the
Rose Festival for more than a hundred years—through world-changing events like
war, economic downturns and natural disasters.
And now, while focused on sustaining our nonprofit foundation through yet another
crisis, we have set aside our normal event planning to showcase the ceremonial side
of Rose Festival. While we continue to stay safe, we look forward to the time when
we can celebrate together again.
Be well,
Ted Wheeler

VISIONS OF WINDMILLS
by Marilyn Clint, Rose Festival’s ‘Parade Queen’
On March 11, 2020, I made
a speaking presentation at
the Museum of the Oregon
Territory in Oregon City with
the quirky title, “The Quixotic
Business of Celebration.”
The talk focused on the
“impracticality and idealism
of festival stewardship” and
outlined how the Rose Festival
had somehow managed to
survive—and thrive—despite
the many external forces
working against it.
I talked about 1918 and the cancellation of the festival during World
War I. I talked about the influenza pandemic that shut down Portland
in the fall of that same year. And I talked about reinventing the festival
in 1919 as the ‘Victory Rose Festival,’ with new branding and new
funding. I talked about all this knowing that much of the planning for
the 2020 festival was already in place; the Rose Festival Court was
nearly complete; much of the sponsorship money was already in the
bank, most of the Grand Floral Parade entries were already booked
and we were on the verge of starting to build parade floats.
When I was packing up my car to leave the museum, I learned that
the NBA was postponing its season. Later that night came the news
that schools would close the following Monday. Wait...there were
still four Princesses to announce!
That was just the beginning of the pandemonium precipitated
by the COVID-19 pandemic. The world changed overnight, and
the festival industry—the business I had identified as requiring
leadership both courageous and idealistic—was facing perhaps
its most significant crisis.
I’ve been telling stories like these for much of my Rose Festival career,
stories with happy endings that prove the resilience of the rose and
the dedication of its acolytes. But on March 11, just minutes after
telling another story of disaster staved off by determination, I was
living the story. And as of the publication date of this program, that
story has no ending.
The irony of the Rose Festival theme, ‘2020 Rose Vision,’ is not lost on
any of the festival’s leaders. Immediately that theme was morphed
into ‘2020 Evolving Vision,’ as the festival’s 15-some committees
were sidelined, the staff was sent home to work remotely, the primary
focus turned to sustaining financial resources, even while plans were
put into place to find ways to celebrate at a safe distance with virtual
events and inside-out parades—or as we called it, Parading in Place.
My role as Director of Communication suddenly outranked my role as
Director of Events. Finding platforms to tell the Rose Festival story—
finding the right words, finding the right way—took over much of
my time, along with learning new vocabulary and new technology.
Early in 2020 we identified three words we felt described the festival:
Inspiring, Tradition and Evolving. The Rose Festival has always been
all three. At its heart, any tenured celebration is all of these things,
or it doesn’t survive to become a heritage festival in the first place. It
takes the lofty enthusiasm of a Don Quixote to steward a festival like
that. People with courage and idealism, people with vision. And the
Rose Festival is blessed with people exactly like that.
The windmills don’t stand a chance.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Portland Rose Festival Foundation Board of
Directors is the governing body of Portland’s Official
Festival, made up of local leaders who make a yearround
commitment to implement the Foundation’s
mission, work on committees for Rose Festival
events, and fulfill assigned roles at these events.
The Board of Directors’ role took a different turn in
2020, as traditional event planning was put on hold
in March. The Officers and Executive Committee
worked in tandem with staff on important decisions
to evolve the Festival’s plans and operations,
with the ultimate goal of protecting Rose Festival
traditions for many years to come. The Festival’s
future is dependent on these extraordinarily
dedicated volunteers, and we are truly grateful for
their commitment and leadership!

LEADING THROUGH CRISIS
Most people have no idea the level of responsibility assumed by
volunteer board members of nonprofit organizations. Since its
beginning in 1907, the Rose Festival has attracted passionate,
committed individuals who give freely of their time and treasure
to steward the festival and its events and programs. Three
organizations have worked for more than a hundred years to
help preserve the festival: The Portland Rose Society, established
in 1889, the most tenured of the three; the Royal Rosarians,
Portland’s Official Greeters and ambassadors in white since
1912; and the Portland Rose Festival Foundation, originally
incorporated in 1907.
Before making the initial announcement to postpone the
2020 Rose Festival, CEO Jeff Curtis needed to have important
conversations with the leaders of these organizations, leaders
who would be called upon to step up in new ways to sustain the
113-year-old festival.
Needless to say, they all stepped up, and they are continuing to
step up.
Leadership skills have been positively tested during this
pandemic. Early on President Teri Bowles-Atherton assigned the
oversight of festival planning to the Major Incident Management
Team, suspending the normal committee structure of the
festival. She and President-Elect Dave Todd led the hand-picked
team of board and staff. In addition, Dave took on the analysis
of new funding sources, becoming inordinately familiar with the
CARES Act and advising staff on the application for the Paycheck
Protection Plan loan.
The festival’s 18-member Executive Committee continued to
meet, albeit in a virtual setting. The Finance Committee under
the leadership of Treasurer John O’Hanlon played a vital role in
planning as revenue sources quickly dried up. Parade chairs and
the Rose Festival Court team were called upon to find new ways
to serve up celebration to a community starving for positivity.
Kimberly Bown, Prime Minister of the Royal Rosarians and Emily
Hastings, President of the Portland Rose Society became familiar
faces on the screen of Zoom calls. Both participated in the Rose
Festival’s Porch Parade processional; Kimberly masterminded
the inclusion of local gardens in the Parading in Place festivities,
adding ‘Roses for Hope’ to the lexicon. As planning turned to the
ceremonial side of Rose Festival, Kimberly and her team fittingly
assumed responsibility for creating pageantry in the midst of
pandemic, dealing admirably with the continually shifting
landscape of expectations and venue restrictions.
Volunteerism continues to be one of Rose Festival’s most
enduring values and one of its most important resources,
especially in light of an uncharted future. When volunteers
become leaders, they bring their hearts along with their heads;
and that combination has helped make the Rose Festival one of
the world’s most cherished legacy events.

2020 ROSE FESTIVAL COURT - A JOURNEY
March at the Rose Festival means
it is time to announce members of
the Rose Festival Court presented
by Unitus Community Credit
Union. However in 2020 things
looked a bit different.
On February 28, we announced
our first Princess at David Douglas
High School. We continued to announce a Princess each day, until
March 11. At this time, things started to change. Corona virus or
COVID-19 became a household word, and a daily topic of discussion.
On the evening of March 11 Governor Brown placed a ban on
gatherings of 50 people or more. On March 12, we announced our
Princess at Lincoln High School in a modified assembly with just
the candidates, and close family and friends. Schools started to talk
about canceling classes, and two schools — St. Mary’s Academy
and Central Catholic — were planning to move to remote learning
for the next few weeks. On March 13, Central Catholic’s doors were
closed, but their announcement was successfully held at Lloyd
Center, and one of the last activities to take place at St. Mary’s that
Friday afternoon was their announcement ceremony, both limited
to the families and teachers of each school’s court members.
The weekend of March 14-15 saw some major changes in
public policy. Governor Brown closed all schools through the
end of March. We had to work quickly and creatively to come
up with a plan to announce the final 4 Princesses, scheduled for
March 16-19. The ultimate goal in determining how to proceed was
making this experience transformational for each young woman
involved. Our solution was to announce the Princess online using
Google Hangouts. A TV news camera came to the Rose Festival
office to film the announcement, candidates dressed up in their
formal gowns, the previous year’s Princess tuned in to offer words
of advice, and the new Princess was able to give a speech on
Instagram stories.
We are grateful to the high school administrators, Court candidates,
the news media, and everyone involved who helped us to swiftly
evolve our traditions and provide a memorable experience to all
the students involved. We are proud of how it all turned out!
However announcing the Princesses is just the start of the Rose
Festival Court Program. On April 9 Governor Brown directed that
schools would stay closed for the remainder of the academic year.
Students are learning to do distance learning, and the Princesses
are having their training on Zoom.
The Court’s Outreach will look different this year. Activities so far
have included doing a live reading on Instagram to children, and
making a video to cheer for essential healthcare workers, which
was shared on social media.
As plans for a phased re-opening continue, the festival continues
to create flexible plans to get members of the 2020 Rose Festival
Court together in person, with hopes of providing an experience
that includes additional training and community outreach.

TELLING THE SPONSORSHIP STORY
Southwest put its name on two of Rose Festival’s parades, and
over the next ten years made a multi-million dollar investment,
managed from their corporate headquarters in Texas. “Once they
felt they had a great foothold in the market, they moved on,” Curtis
says. “The good news for the festival was we were able to help
them achieve their marketing goals. After a few years without an
official airline deal, Alaska stepped up in 2012 and has taken it to
the next level when it comes to organizational integration.”
Sponsors are a big part of the Rose Festival’s story, with fascinating
stories of their own about their connections to Portland’s Official
Festival. “Most people only think of the money,” says longtime
staffer Marilyn Clint. “But our premier partners represent so
much more than that.” Key sponsors contribute corporate
clout, community connections, creative inspiration along with
constructive checks and balances, not to mention organizational
leadership. These Sponsor Stories have been crafted by Clint, the
festival’s resident historian, to highlight the intricate connection
between Rose Festival and its premier sponsors.
Corporate sponsorship grew in the 1980s as one of the most
important financial components for perpetually-struggling nonprofit
events. “Funding a festival is a tricky business,” says Clint. “From
the very beginning, companies like Meier & Frank kept the festival
going. And Gerry Frank has been part of the Rose Festival board of
directors for as long as I’ve been alive, which is a long time.”
But even longtime sponsors can be vulnerable to change.
“Sometimes companies go away or their marketing goals change,”
says CEO Jeff Curtis, whose Rose Festival career started in
sponsorship sales. “Meier & Frank, for instance, was acquired by
Macy’s in 2006. Macy’s didn’t have that personal connection to
Rose Festival.”
A company’s decision to sponsor an event or a festival comes
from a variety of places. Decisions can be based in good corporate
citizenship, community spirit or strong, targeted marketing goals.
“Southwest Airlines is a great example of the latter,” says
Curtis. “In the early 1990s they waited for the festival’s official
airline to opt out, then they called us. They wanted to be aligned
with the biggest event in Portland which was a new market for
them at the time.”
When corporate names started appearing in the title of events in
the 1980s, it was initially a controversial step. While the general
public seemed to accept it, media outlets were more skeptical.
Portland’s daily newspaper went through several iterations of
policy in regard to acknowledging sponsors in editorial coverage of
events. Later it became commonplace.
“We had to make some hard calls to local media in the early days
of title sponsorship,” says Clint. “We had to advocate for our
sponsors. There’s a formula for the level of investment, whether
a name appears before or after the name of an event, as in a
title or presenting sponsor. You’re always trying to be sure your
sponsors are getting a good return on their investment.” Rose
Festival follows the guidelines of the International Events Group,
the industry leader in sponsorship trends and valuations.
Curtis’ background in sponsorship sales is a plus for dealing with
the twists and turns of the festival business. “I have my own sales
formula I use every year to forecast sponsorship dollars. The money
is what makes us able to meet our mission, to accomplish our
programming goals. Rose Festival is one of the best in the events
world at sponsor recruitment and retention. We concentrate on the
big picture. And as highly as we value our premier sponsors, we
recognize the importance of every relationship, no matter the size
or scope. We have fully embraced a core philosophy of customized
relationships with all of our sponsors.”
“If you look over the long history of the festival,” says Clint, “it’s
hard to quantify the investment of longtime sponsors like PGE
and Wells Fargo. Sponsoring a float in the Grand Floral Parade
is extremely important to us, because floats are the cornerstone
of our programming. And PGE and Wells (in its former corporate
identities of First National Bank and First Interstate Bank) have
provided parade content for decades. That can’t really be assigned
a dollar value, and neither can their contribution to our leadership.
More Rose Festival presidents have come out of Wells than any
other company. And PGE’s Rose Festival leadership is legendary.
There’s more than money to the sponsorship story.”

ROSE FESTIVAL STORIES:
UNITUS COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION
Unitus Community Credit Union is the newest member to the
ranks of Rose Festival premier sponsorship. After ten years of
working with Pacific Power as the presenting sponsor of the
Rose Festival’s most traditional and treasured program—the
Rose Festival Court—Unitus was the clear front-runner to take
over stewardship of the Court. 2019 Grand Marshal and Rose
Festival Honors recipient Sheila Holden of Pacific Power sat down
with executives at Unitus herself to extol the opportunities of
partnering with Rose Festival on this tenured program.
One of Oregon’s most admired companies according to the
Portland Business Journal and one well known for its nonprofit
collaborations, Unitus Community Credit Union also models
the values of female empowerment and mentorship that go
hand-in-hand with the Rose Festival Court program. The Court’s
mentorship program was started by Sheila at Pacific Power,
but the team at Unitus was determined to take on the awardwinning
initiative and expand it even more. The team at Unitus
takes a hands-on approach to working with Rose Festival Court
leadership in the annual planning for the Court experience.
“For Unitus, partnering with the
Rose Festival means showing up
for our community, which extends
far beyond monetary support,” says
Steve Stapp, the CEO/President of
Unitus Community Credit Union.
“For example, each member of the
Court is paired with a mentor from
Unitus who guides them on their
journey through the program. This
type of support is so important to Unitus that it’s in our name:
You Us Unitus.”
Since Unitus became the presenting sponsor of the Rose Festival
Court and the Queen’s Coronation in 2015, the women on the
Court have had even more opportunities to prepare for their
future studies, careers and earning power. 15 female Unitus
executives provide personal mentorship to the 15 princesses,
including helping each young woman learn more about a future
career in her chosen field. Unitus conducts a financial workshop
for the princesses each year to teach them about managing
their money. Even during the unprecedented 2020 season, these
activities are being held in virtual settings so this year’s Court
can benefit from the expertise of the Unitus execs.
Michaell Lachenmeier, Unitus Loan Center Manager, has served
as a Court mentor. She says, “Without a doubt, our favorite
thing about the Rose Festival experience is the Court Program.
It provides such a unique learning experience for these young
women. Sharing knowledge, investing our time, and showing
up for people in our community like these incredible young
individuals is just one of the ways we can make a meaningful
difference.”
Well known in the community for corporate philanthropy, Unitus
Community Credit Union was the perfect partner to pair with
the Rose Festival Court, with a corporate culture that reflects the
values of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation.

QUEEN’S CORONATION
Presented by Unitus Community Credit Union
The Crowning Moment
The Rose Festival Queen has been crowned at many different
locations over 105 years of selecting a royal representative.
Laurelhurst Park was a popular spot in the early years. When
Multnomah Stadium—now Providence Park—was built in
1926, it became the venue of choice. In 1961 the new Memorial
Coliseum served as the site, until late in the 1980s when the
festival began to rotate between the Keller Auditorium and
the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall to stage televised events.
In 2005, the ceremony moved back into Veterans Memorial
Coliseum and for 15 years it took place on the morning of the
Grand Floral Parade, prior to step-off.
The 2020 Queen will be announced and will receive her
crown on Thursday, July 30 in an undisclosed location, kept
private due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The
investiture will be videotaped for inclusion in an hour-long
television special. The Queen’s Coronation presented by Unitus
Community Credit Union is scheduled to air on KPDX Fox 12+
on Saturday, August 1.
will wear this crown, and she’ll be presented with the same
scepter used since the early 1990s, a 22-inch rosewood staff
topped with a 3 1/2 inch gold-plated spun copper and brass
orb. That scepter has seen a lot of good use over the past three
decades, ceremoniously doffing hundreds of deserving people
with honorary knighthood bestowed by the Royal Rosarians
in the hands of thirty-some queens. The orb has collected a
few dents, no doubt due to mishaps like the year the Queen
accidently dropped it into the tank of water holding the
bumper boats at Waterfront Park!
The manner of choosing the 2020 queen is heralding back to
1930, the very first year the Princesses were selected from
Portland high schools. That year the method was kept secret
until the evening of the Queen Selection, when the young
women were asked to fill out a ballot with three names: their
first, second and third choices for queen. The 2020 Rose Festival
Court will elect its own queen, just as the 1930 Court did!
Since 1922, the Queen
has been invested with
the ‘Crown of Rosaria,’
the delicate 14-carat gold
filigree diadem adorned
with 650 white sapphires,
seven pigeon blood
rubies and a blue zicon
at its tip. The 2020 Queen

ROSE FESTIVAL STORIES: REGENCE
One of the first health care companies to partner with Rose
Festival, Regence got started with their first Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Oregon float in 1987. That float depicted the Olympic
torch and celebrated Blue Cross’ affiliation with the upcoming
summer Olympics. It also presented aspiring athletes, including
the Rose Festival’s 1980 Queen, track & field star Robin Marks.
A decade later CEO Jeff Curtis would receive a call from
Regence asking whether Rose Festival would be interested
in creating an entirely new event, one that would highlight
fitness and healthy living. In 2008, Regence became the
sponsor of the Grand Floral Walk, the four-mile march that
precedes the Grand Floral Parade along the same route. A
team from Regence worked with Rose Festival staff to plan
and promote the event from the ground up; Regence continued
their support of the Walk for six years, helping solidify its place
in the festival’s schedule. This style of innovation is inherent in
the Regence corporate culture, a company leading its industry
to provide transformative tools for its members.
Regence has carefully concentrated on utilizing their Rose
Festival support to promote mission-driven themes and
initiatives, serving both their own brand and that of the
festival. For two years Regence and Rose Festival staff worked
with Portland’s nine sister city associations to provide a
vehicle to promote the work of these small nonprofits, helping
to create the first real alliance in five decades. The Tribute Tree
in 2014 was a salute to those in military service; the tree itself
was not only a feature of the Regence float, it lived on the
grounds of Rose Festival CityFair for two weekends, where
people were able to write and affix their personal tributes to
the tree’s branches.
Furthering their support of those in service, Regence has
become an important contributor to the Rose Festival’s
Fleet Week, one of the most popular parts of each year’s
celebration. In 2008, Darci Hansen joined the Rose Festival’s
board of directors, part of Regence’ commitment to providing
leadership to its nonprofit partners. Darci is now a member of
the festival’s Executive Committee and in 2020 became the
first woman to chair the Rose Festival’s Fleet Committee.
“It’s rewarding to work for a
company that prioritizes Portland’s
iconic events, like the Rose Festival.
As someone raised in a U.S. Navy
family, my passion for Fleet Week
fits perfectly with the culture of a
company that encourages me to
exercise personal leadership to make
a positive impact for both Regence
and the Rose Festival,” says Darci, Director of B2B Strategy &
Integrated Marketing.
In 2017, Regence celebrated a century of service to the
Northwest with a memorable horse-drawn float in the Grand
Floral Parade, a re-creation of the two-wheeled rigs that were
used to transport logs in turn-of-the-century camps around
the state. Regence BlueCross BlueShield had its birth in these
logging camps, bringing health care to the workers who
helped create today’s Oregon. From traditional float entries to
inspiring innovative new events and programs, Regence has
helped shape today’s evolving Rose Festival.

ROSE FESTIVAL PORCH PARADE
Presented by Pacific Power
May 16 - 30, 2020
The Rose Festival Porch Parade presented by Pacific Power let
Portlanders come together and celebrate at a safe distance. The
public was invited to decorate a front porch, window or sidewalk
in support of the Rose Festival. Hundreds of residents from
across the metro area participated. Every entry was listed on
the official Porch Parade map, and people were invited to drive,
walk, or bike by to view the porches. The first 150 participants
received a Porch Parade yard sign. Highlights included NE 52nd
Avenue, where the entire street joined in on the fun with a
theme of “Supporting Local Businesses,” a Tiger King-themed
porch, and a house with vintage Rose Festival posters.
The Royal Rosarians also joined in by organizing Roses
for Hope. Private rose gardens visible from the street or
sidewalk were identified with special Roses for Hope signs,
and remained on the Parading in Place map all summer so
community members could seek them out for the entire
blooming season.
On Saturday, May 23, select houses were honored with a
VIP Processional where Rose Festival dignitaries thanked
participants by parading by in their cars. Participants included
Rose Festival Queen Mya Brazile, President Teri Bowles-
Atherton, parade chairs, the Clown Prince, Royal Rosarians,
and more!

ROSE FESTIVAL STORIES:
SPIRIT MOUNTAIN CASINO
Just eight months after opening,
Spirit Mountain Casino sponsored
its first Grand Floral Parade
float, ‘Nature’s Spirit,’ featuring
a mother coyote and her cubs.
The float won the Sweepstakes
Award and began a tradition
of spectacular Spirit Mountain
floats depicting scenes of nature
or native culture.
The name of the casino is on
Spirit Mountain’s sponsorships,
but the spirit of the Tribes of
Grand Ronde shines through the
partnership with Rose Festival.
Truly great partnerships elevate both parties, and the relationship
between Spirit Mountain and Rose Festival is a perfect example.
Sponsorship Manager and Tribal member Jocelyn Huffman says: “I
have always looked at our sponsorship as more of a partnership, a
friendship if you will. Sharing our stories and continuing our tradition
of giving with the festival is a blessing to our tribe and something we
look forward to continuing for many years to come.”
Spirit Mountain’s Rose Festival relationship stretches over many
different events and programs, from the festival’s adventuresome
annual Treasure Hunt to the title sponsorship of the festival’s
cornerstone event, the Grand Floral Parade. In January of 2011,
when Spirit Mountain Casino and Rose Festival made the joint
announcement of this significant sponsorship, tribal member Steve
Bobb called the opportunity to work with the festival a “rainbow in
our lives.” Bobb said it was not about “putting our logos and banners
on the street. It’s a connection to our past, recognizing that today’s
Grand Ronde people and our ancestors are the indigenous people
of not only this area, but of the Willamette Valley. This gives us the
opportunity to do what we have so
longed to do, to welcome people to
the homelands of the Confederated
Tribes of the Grand Ronde.”
The Spirit Mountain Community Fund, which has given more than $80
million to nonprofits since it was founded in 1997, has often played
a role in the tribe’s festival partnership. In 2014, the Community
Fund gave $100,000 to the Rose Festival’s Official Charity, the Knight
Cancer Challenge—the two-year successful initiative to raise $1
billion to continue OHSU’s groundbreaking work to fight cancer.
Over its 25-year affiliation, the Rose Festival and Spirit Mountain have
been able to share countless
stories, reflections and images
of native culture to increase the
general public’s understanding
and appreciation for the history
of its indigenous people. Last
year’s float entry depicted
the fishing platform built
at Willamette Falls in 2018,
an image that illuminates
the Grand Ronde people’s
connection with the river as
well as their tireless ongoing work to preserve their most important
traditions.
One of the most important things that have always magnified the
relationship between Rose Festival and Spirit Mountain has been
the unselfish spirit of the Grand Ronde people, the generosity and
gratitude that permeates their traditional potlatch celebration where
good fortune is shared. That spirit is inherent in the Spirit Mountain
Casino sponsorship.

GRAND PETITE PARADE
June 6, 2020
As the third and final program of the 2020 Rose Festival’s
Parading in Place celebration, The Grand Petite Parade
combined the idea of traditional entries like floats, marching
bands, drill teams, equestrians, and more, and transported
them into the digital world to celebrate the Portland Rose
Festival’s iconic parades from home.
Members of the community were invited to design and
build shoebox floats with materials they already had at
home. Throughout the month of May community members,
organizations, companies and clubs uploaded pictures of
their creations. Entries covered a wide variety of subjects and
construction materials, ranging from paper mâché manatees
and flowers made from quarantine supplies, to repurposed
competitive robots and all floral covered miniature versions
of iconic Portland Rose Festival moments.
Parade favorites like The One More Time Around Again
Marching Band, and the Last Regiment of Syncopated
Drummers compiled member videos in locations from
Portland to Paris in order to provide the soundtrack for the
virtual festivities. The centennial celebration of the end to
women’s suffrage was celebrated with an appearance from
Oregon’s own historical suffragist, Abigail Scott Duniway,
and the Rose Festival’s own Clown Prince provided a “street
level” view of the action throughout the broadcast.
Rose Festival sponsors found unique ways to share in the
celebration as well! The Alaska Airlines drill team performed
on the tarmac at PDX, Unitus Community Credit Union
celebrated the young women of the 2020 Rose Festival Court,
Portland General Electric celebrated their long-standing
support of the festival and Spirit Mountain Casino reminded
the community to embrace and celebrate our traditions, even
in these exceptional times.
All in all, over 170 community floats were combined with
video conferenced group entries, messages of hope from the
Mayor and other community leaders, miniature equestrian
scenes, a non-traditional color guard, and much more to
create a 1-hour livestream event. The first ever Grand Petite
Parade premiered on the Portland Rose Festival’s Facebook
page on Saturday, June 6, 2020, and has been seen by almost
19,000 viewers to date!

ROSE FESTIVAL STORIES:
PORTLAND GENERL ELECTRIC
It seems fitting that Rose Festival’s most tenured corporate
partner is also the company that literally brought Portland
into the light. Portland General Electric’s role in the success
and growth of the City is a story in itself, one too detailed for
this publication.
But just as Rose Festival has its roots in Portland’s 1905 world’s
fair—the Lewis & Clark Exposition—PGE’s involvement with
the festival started with that very event. Henry C. Goode,
president of PGE during the planning and production of the
very successful exposition, was also the president and general
manager of the fair itself. Under Goode’s leadership, PGE’s
mission became aligned with corporate citizenship and civic
betterment, and the Lewis & Clark Exposition became one of
the most financially successful world’s fairs ever.
It followed that PGE would embrace the festival that inherited
the fair’s mantle, the Portland Rose Festival. “For 113 years,
PGE has supported the Portland Rose Festival. From the first
horse drawn float in 1907 to PGE and TriMet’s all electric bus
entry in 2019, this festival has been a showcase of the beauty
and evolution of our wonderful City of Roses,” says Kregg
Arntson, PGE’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Illuminated floats were one of the magnificent spectacles
of early festivals, built on the chassis of the trolley cars that
serviced the electrified city. In 1994 PGE fittingly became
the title sponsor of the modern version of those early
electrical parades, the Starlight Parade, a sponsorship that
continues today.
In the 1990s, environmental sustainability became a major
focus of the relationship between Rose Festival and Portland
General Electric. Working together with
leaders from the City of Portland and
SOLVE, the partners started one of the
festival’s most successful initiatives, the Cleanest and Greenest
Festival program. For 25 years this program has received
international accolades for its
multiple elements, including its
famous volunteer parade cleanup
and PGE’s offset of parade entry
emissions with renewable energy
credits, plus the powering of Rose
Festival CityFair with renewable
energy sources.
Volunteerism is one of the keys
to the Cleanest Festival program.
Edgar Martinez, a senior customer
service advisor at PGE says, “My
family and I look forward to the Rose Festival each year! We
love representing PGE by volunteering, enjoying the festivities
and helping our community. While this year is different, we’re
still excited to join the fun virtually from home.”
One of the festival’s legendary volunteer board leaders, Hillman
Lueddemann, Jr.—who served as Rose Festival President in
1974 and continued to serve on its Executive Committee for
three more decades—retired from PGE as Vice President and
Assistant to the Chairman in 1989. Just as he continued to serve
Rose Festival, the man fondly known as ‘Lueddie’ kept an office
at PGE until just a few years before his death in 2017. Ultimately,
it’s PGE’s legacy of leadership that has made Portland and the
surrounding community a brighter place to live.

HOPE SHINES
The neon rose atop the Rose Festival headquarters had a timely
addition of something we all need: hope. Joe and Wendy Gibson,
owners of Ramsay Signs, came up with the idea after a conversation
with Rose Festival CEO Jeff Curtis about the postponement of the
2020 Festival. The sign is not only a shining beacon of hope for the
community as it glows over downtown, it is a testament to the
power of partnership.

ROSE FESTIVAL CLOWNS
The Rose Festival Clowns bring joy and humor to Rose
Festival events all season long. This volunteer corps of
clowns go through an audition and a rigorous training
process. During the training they develop a unique clown
personality, which they use to delight individuals on the
parade routes and beyond. The new class of nine Rose
Festival Clowns “graduated” on March 8, 2020.
Founded in 2008, the program is in its twelfth year, and
has graduated over 150 clowns. Most clowns are working
professionals ranging from the owner of a marketing firm
to executive director of a school. What they all have in
common is their desire to bring joy and smiles to others.
See the Clowns in Action:
This year the Rose Festival Clowns helped out by providing
content for the Rose Festival YouTube channel. You can see

Rose Festival’s official mascot, the Clown Prince,
typically rides in all three Rose Festival parades
on his throne! This year he played an important
role in the Virtual Opening Night presented by
Xfinity and the Grand Petite Parade, both on our
YouTube channel.

ROSE FESTIVAL STORIES: ALASKA AIRLINES
In the mid-1960s airline companies made their first Rose Festival
appearance, with float entries in the Grand Floral Parade. But
one of the festival’s very first title sponsors—a relationship
where the level of commitment incorporates the sponsor into
the actual name of the event—was Alaska Airlines. In 1986,
the year the Rose Festival logo turned teal and Shirley Jones
of the Partridge Family appeared with the Oregon Symphony,
Alaska became the title sponsor of the Starlight Parade. While
that event affiliation was short-lived, Alaska’s relationship with
the festival would make a big comeback decades later, all due
to one woman’s passion for both her Rose Festival volunteer
role and for the company she serves.
Contesa Diaz-Nicolaidis is
proof that Alaska Airlines
values the input of its team.
Contesa’s wardrobe work
on the Rose Festival’s Court
Committee was accomplished
between Alaska flights; the
young mother was—and still
is—an Alaska Airlines flight
attendant. But she was also
convinced that Alaska could
support Rose Festival in a big
way and reap the benefits of the relationship, the classic winwin
scenario. She helped sell the idea to the big bosses, and
later she became the project manager for one of the festival’s
most intricately integrated partnerships. In 2013, Alaska
became the Rose Festival’s Official Airline and Grand Floral
Parade telecast sponsor.
Even parade committee members are surprised to learn Alaska’s
depth of involvement. Alaska employees are organized into
teams that touch many parts of Rose Festival, from the Dragon
Boat Races to Rose Festival CityFair, where Alaska volunteers
work the gates and scan concert tickets. Alaska’s Grand Floral
Parade float is always a labor of love, representing the input of
a passionate creative team that oversees everything from the
float design to the floral arrangements, with hundreds of Alaska
affiliates putting their hands on the actual intricate seedwork of
the float itself. Alaska floats have depicted desirable destinations
and colorful creatures from around the world, like sled dogs and
koala bears! Alaska has also connected nonprofit affiliations
like Make-a-Wish Foundation with their festival involvement,
hosting several ‘wish kids’ as part of their float program.
By the time the premier sponsorship solidified, Contesa was
already a valued festival leader, joining the Rose Festival’s
board of directors in 2009. “The relationship between Alaska
Airlines, its employees and the Rose Festival bring a richness
and authenticity to the sponsorship,” Contesa says. “And it has
provided many opportunities to find new, creative ways to do
great things in our community. We always walk away from each
year’s work feeling good about what we have done together as
a team!”
People and passion are not the only assets Alaska provides:
Alaska’s generous contribution of airline tickets to the festival is
evident in many events, including the festival’s annual Dinner &
Auction. Overall, Alaska is one of the best examples anywhere of
a true partnership between a festival and a corporate supporter,
one where the value cannot be quantified by a dollar amount.

ROSE FESTIVAL STORIES: KPTV
Oregon’s first television station, KPTV was the first local
station to telecast a Rose Festival event. Just nine months after
signing on the air in September of 1952, KPTV broadcast the
Grand Floral Parade. Since that time, KPTV Fox 12 Oregon has
consistently broadcast and advertised festival events, as well
as covering decades of Rose Festivals editorially.
At first KPTV was the local affiliate for all the major networks;
as other stations came on line, KPTV’s affiliation shifted. For
many years, KPTV was one of the most well known independent
stations in the nation, but for the past two decades, KPTV
has been a FOX affiliate. In January of 2012, after a proposal
process among local
stations for TV rights,
the festival announced
KPTV Fox 12 Oregon
had been chosen as the
Rose Festival’s Official
Television Partner.
Since then KPTV has
broadcast all three
Rose Festival parades
and various other
festival specials.
In 2018 Adrienne Roark,
Vice President / General
Manager of FOX 12 and
FOX 12 PLUS, joined
the Rose Festival board;
in 2019, she became a
member of the festival’s
governing body, the
Executive Committee.
“We at FOX 12 Oregon and FOX 12 PLUS value the partnership
with the Rose Festival because its impact on the local spirit
of our community is so inspiring,” she says. “While we won’t
be gathering this year to celebrate the best of the Rose City,
when know that when the festival resumes, we will have every
reason to celebrate and show our love and support for the
community we call home.”
HISTORIC RECREATIONS
Some Grand Petite Parade participants took
the time to recreate historic Rose Festival
moments with their shoebox float entries.

ROSE FESTIVAL STORIES: FRED MEYER
The company famous for one-stop-shopping began its
affiliation with Rose Festival in 1981, the same way many
other companies got started, with a float in the Grand Floral
Parade. That year’s Fred Meyer float featured dancing pink
hippos, of all things, but didn’t include longtime mascot Fred
Bear, who has made countless Rose Festival appearances and
ridden on many festival floats since.
Fred Meyer’s Executive Vice President, C. Dale Warman joined
the Rose Festival’s board of directors in the 1980s and became
actively involved with parade leadership, boosting corporate
involvement in float entries. In the meantime, Fred Meyer
branched out its Rose Festival affiliations, becoming the first
title sponsor of the festival’s field marching competition, the
Festival of Bands, a sponsorship that lasted into the 1990s.
Successful festival sponsors are often looking for innovation
in the programs they support, and Fred Meyer is a great
example. In the late 1990s, Rose Festival and Fred Meyer
worked together to develop a kids program in affiliation
with the Grand Floral Parade: For six years the ‘Fred Bear
Junior Judges’ chose their own sweepstakes winning float.
The judges were selected through an essay contest, and the
winning kids were dressed in Fred Meyer outfits and actually
got to ride the Fred Meyer float along with their namesake,
Fred Bear himself!
In 2004 Fred Meyer became title sponsor of one of the festival’s
most popular events, the Junior Parade. The Junior Parade’s
unique footprint in the Hollywood District aligned perfectly
with Fred Meyer’s commitment to that neighborhood. The
original Hollywood Fred Meyer, with its distinctive rooftop
parking lot, opened in 1931; it’s now one of Fred Meyer’s
most popular shopping centers.
The primary retail location for the Rose Festival souvenir pin,
Fred Meyer remains integrated into several Rose Festival
events, helping to provide the wardrobe for the Rose Festival
Court and populating the Grand Floral Walk with employees
and family members. And their Grand Floral Parade float
continues to be a highlight. From those first dancing hippos
to the ginormous gnome in 2019, Fred Meyer floats are
always fun.
